That was really good? Like I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it? Do we know how much was Ron Howard and how much was Lord & Miller?

Fuck, I want a solo 2!

Anyways what did you guys think?

I loved it, really awesome heist movie with a Star Wars backdrop

Reviews and critics are for reference but not to inform, this movie is a perfect example of that

Boring and disposable, "origin" moments are universally embarrassing, would have been better with original characters rather than saddled with brand recognizable ones. Can't see myself ever wanting to watch it again.

Still better than Attack of the Clones.

It unfortunately for many came with a shit load of expectation, the weight of the SW franchise, mixed thoughts on TLJ and a lot of armchair critics thinking they could do better than the entire management of Lucasfilm just because they've watched Empire 200 times and were aware that their was some directorial issues

As a film in itself, it's pretty damn good. I enjoyed it at least. For me the original SW films were very enjoyable throwaway romps that grew and people gave them a weight that I don't think was initially there.

Take the current MCU. Some are huge fucking end of the world Infinity Wars. Some are Ant Man, light and breezy. Solo to me was Ant Man like, and I enjoyed strolling through their universe as opposed to being beaten over the head with ultimate good Vs Evil galactic stake pieces

Its not a bad movie. I kinda liked it, but it has some flaws.
Especially the "Solo" naming scene. That one's total bs.

Howard reshot about 70% of the whole movie, so there's a lot of Ron Howard in there.

If they had cast a guy as Solo who you took a look at and were like, "Man, I've GOT to see his take on the character!" it could have been a lot more successful; essentially they needed someone to do for Han Solo what Donald Glover was able to do for Lando Calrissian.

As it is, Alden Ehrenreich is just kind of there, and being the title character and everything, that hurts.

By the end I was feeling it with him. Definitely some questionable lines but I dunno, this was his first real time as an outlaw we learned.

Also, that pirate woman was beckett's daughter right? That was what was hinted at with him and Val being her parents?

Probably last week at the theater. It had like... 2 showtimes today at my theater

I loved it aswell,in fact I've enjoyed Rogue and Solo more than the last two mainline films
I enjoyed Rogue One a lot the first time I saw it but the second and third times I liked it less and less. It's really good once Jynn's dad
dies
but before then it's pretty bad imo

Force Awakens I was meh on not a fan of Rey. The Last Jedi I really enjoyed though both times I watched it. And now Solo was surprisingly good too. I do wish they would slow down though, I feel over saturated.

Thought it was fun in the moment, but ultimately hollow and safe. The heist is a roller coaster through a variety of locations but it isn't clever nor surprising, which is a downer for a heist. The characters are fun and seeing Ehrenreich channeling Ford's "oh crap, they called my bluff" moments was a delight. The cast definitely had enough pull to make you want to follow more of their adventures but their character arcs in Solo were not infrequently headscratchers, likely because of reshoots. The sequel tease with the cameo character was a non-event that only pissed me off because nothing cool happened and it was only setting up loose ends without the guarantee of a resolution. Almost as jarring as the much maligned BvS's "let's watch some JL trailers" scene stopper. The ineffectual social justice robot was probably supposed to be funny but I found the type of comedy they were going for in bad taste. Like, if these sentient droids want freedom then why roll your eyes and make it a joke.

... The more I think about it, the less I like it.

I also really liked it, strong cast, good action, and simple story can go a long way. I also appreciate that it felt like the old school EU at times(the good kind of old school EU at least), I also liked pretty much every character which was a big plus.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

And this might be the only time that a geek property has whipped out an Easter Egg and I legitimately felt giddy.
Qi'ra being trained in Teras Kasi is wonderful but Lando dictating his prior adventures and talking about The Mindharp of Sharu is next level greatness.

It was better than Rogue One because at least it had characters to care about, and the new additions to the lore were great. Explaining every single bit of Han's lore was a fucking mess though. So everything that defined his character ten years later happened within a brief period, check. Nothing happened to him after that.

The Negative Zone
I saw it a few days ago and it's one of my least favorite Star Wars movies. I thought it felt like an EU book that had been made into a movie. It was far too fixated on answering questions about Han Solo that nobody has ever asked, which diminished the reveals of things people were actually curious about. By the end of the movie it felt like they were just crossing items off a list. It had a solid cast and some good performances, but the characters they inhabited were, by and large, visually interesting cardboard with little development and shallow arcs. I went in with low expectations for Ehrenreich and still came out disappointed.

Things I liked: Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian...phenomenal, easily the best part of the movie. He elevates every scene he is in. Chewbacca. The use of practical effects. Cinematography was very good. Spending a whole film in the "scum and villainy" side of the universe was cool and I wish they would do more of that (but I guess they probably won't now). That's it. I didn't hate it but I have no desire to see it again.

I like it a lot.

As for the question on how much of it was Howard... I think 70% seems to be around correct. He also has restructured the movie quite a lot. I know that Paul Betanny (Dryden Voss, the bad guy) came on board with Howard. I don't know if that part of the story was completely introduced by Howard or if he just replaced a different actor...

It's an ok film. But I really didn't like how Han's character is created in this small time frame. It's similar to the beginning of The Last Crusade where we learn where Indiana got his scar, his whip, his hat and his fear of snakes and all that in a SINGLE DAY.

So here they need to shoehorn how Han got his last name, how he got his blaster, how he met Chewie, how he won the Falcon and did the Kessel Run. It's too much. They should have just kept it simple.

Interesting, I wonder what the story was before then? Dryden was great I thought

I'm with you OP, I want to see more with the same team and cast.

I was expected the film to drop as low as 200m in the US but I can't wrap my head around that overseas number, it's like a conspiracy where the BO numbers weren't update.

I think people are feeling star wars fatigue. Last Jedi came out what like 4 or 5 months before solo? It's not like marvel they need to space them out

The character was in it before (or a similar version) and was played by Michael K Williams (Omar from the Wire) but he wasn't able to return to film the re-shoots, because he was already filming another movie at the time.
I liked Rogue One more. Fight me.

As a pretty big Star Wars fan, I found it fun but nothing more. It was very episodic in structure, which resulted in a pretty flat third act. The big spoiler was very tacked on too.

I had a lot of fun with it, but it was like a reverse Rogue One for me. The first part excited, the second didn't. Still, I wouldn't mind getting sequels though.

I went in with low expectations and thoroughly enjoyed it other than a few awkward origin buliding moments.

Much better than that brooding and jumbled mess of Rogue One.

He's called Han Solo cos he's on his own and some random dude calls him that.

He liked that name so much he gave it to his son.

I really enjoyed it too, expected it to be poor due to production issues

Good pacing and liked all the characters. Some minor bits where the comedy missed its mark but it was fun, visually good looking too. If a little too dark in certain areas.

It was the best modern SW movie so far. I absolutely hated TFA, disliked Rogue One and found TLJ a bore. I went in expecting nothing good but I actually liked Solo.

It was an ok movie, though I prefer Rogue One over it. Also I liked the robot, again not as good as the one in Rogue One but I thought some of the jokes she said was funny.

The sad/awesome thing was when my friend and I went to watch it we were the only ones in the cinema so that was cool.

He is trying to identify as someone he is not. He does not want to be the 'good guy' he wanted to forge a new identity and be the galactic outlaw, right up to the end of the characters life that's what he was trying to be.

It was as good a name as any for his new life, he clearly ran away from his real family and had no good connection with them (he spoke of having no good relationship with his father).

Solo naming scene was dumb, but otherwise the film was a blast. Enjoyed it way more than TLJ, which was a boring slog. Really baffling to me how this was met with such disdain.
More proof that Star Wars fans are the worst - this was the most "Star Wars" film yet out of Disney.
