To be honest, while I don't think they'll actually do it... is there really anything to stop them from changing Rey's background? Yeah, so Kylo says that they were nobodies and Rey believes him. So what? He might not know, he could be lying to fuck with & manipulate her - he's a dick. That's established. JJ can basically write what he wants, and he could totally revert to his Ep 9 original plan for Rey if he wants her to be a Kenobi or whatever. Nothing in TLJ sets that in stone, and if TLJ is anything it's a demonstration that you don't have to take everything from the previous movie as gospel. Like, what happened with Luke is not something you can change, but Rey's parentage is just a couple of lines and nothing firm at all.

Since folks are talking about it anyway, I will say that if Episode IX retcons literally my favorite plot beat in the franchise then even I might not be able to forgive it -- and I'm three-and-a-half for four on these new movies. (Solo was middling IMO.)

Oh no man, it's set it stone. Rey said so.

It's probably in LF's best interest not to stomp all over Johnson's story while he's still working for them. And also to not discourage other filmmakers from ever bothering with a fickle company who will cave on their story choices as soon as the Internet pissbabies start crying.

Opening scene is everything up until Finn wakes up from his comma. Turns out 8 was just a comma dream.

You need to give this up. Her parents are dead. In TFA, Maz tells Rey that her parents are never coming back. In TLJ, it's Rey who says they were nobody before Kylo confirms this. For some odd reason, there is this common misconception that Kylo says they are nobodies first. That didn't happen. The two movies clearly establish that Rey has always known about her parents but lied to herself to keep her from facing the truth. NOTHING in the two movies indicates that her parents are anything special. I wish this would just stop being a thing.

Will Amy Jo Johnson be in this? So she could play her best friend before Keri's character leaves for Jakku?

I'm ready for the casting announcement for Shriv and Iden's daughter from Battlefront 2. They were tasked to find the allies in the outer rim:

She's the best, but both mainline directors have had a problem with hiring incredible talent, and giving them nothing to do

I'm still mad

I remember this shot looking incredible in the trailer. Couldn't wait to see these guys pop up. God damn it JJ.

They better be the final boss

Then why the fuck is the connection between her and Kylo so damn strong that they can have force Skype sessions?

Johnson completely tossed out JJ's ideas for 8 and he was perfectly happy to return for 9. I don't think you take on & make a franchise movie like this without knowing exactly how much control you actually have when push comes to shove, which is why you get things like Trevorrow departing 9 or Wright leaving Ant-Man. I'm sure JJ will have just as much carte blanche to do what he wants as Johnson had on 8, even if it means retconning or going against bits of 8. I don't really care what the piss babies say though, so I hope (for instance) JJ finds a big role for Rose that's more than just Lando levels of involvement in ROTJ, etc.

Probably one of resistance leaders who didn't answer Leia's call. I expect them to appear at the climax of the movie and go like "sorry for being such wimps, but all that matters is were here now so let's destroy the evil".

Man, how I want this trilogy to end with a darker conclusion.

I'll say it again, if JJ backtracks on Rey's lineage it will expose him as the biggest hack fraud in the industry. As to this casting, I'm indifferent. Though I am tired of every major female in the franchise being a white brunette, Rose being the one exception. Stop talking about diversity and show some receipts you frauds.
Luke: "How did my father die?"
Ben: "A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father."

Can't wait for that three minute fight scene where all the knights are introduced and then immediately jobbed out to Rey and Finn.

Way to introduce a cool concept and do absolutely nothing with it. Which I suppose is Star Wars tradition at this point but still.

Bastila Shan. Totally calling it. She was brought from the unknown past by Rey and Maz through some force time mechanic and she's going to help Rey defeat Kylo Ren. She'll also help teach the new students at the end of IX.

Oh yeah and Luke is alive and stuck on a nudist planet.

I'm not campaigning for it, fwiw - so I don't need to give it up, as such, but I'm saying narratively if that's a path JJ wants to take they absolutely could take it, that's all.

I will say that in the films there is a definitive tonal difference, though, where her being 'nobody' and from 'nowhere' in TFA is played more as an ooo spooky mystery, whereas in TLJ it's played straight as the truth. I think that's just also a difference in film makers too though, where JJ loves mysteries (those Lost instincts, ey) and Johnson likes to challenge expectations rather than provoke speculation.

I do think Star Wars desperately needs to move away from being the story/saga of one family, though. As far as I'm concerned I hope 9 kills Ben and then we're rid of the whole Skywalker clan (and any connection to Obi-Wan, too) for whatever they choose to do next.

Rey:who are you?
Keri:I'm your mother Rey.
Rey:where have you been?
Keri:nothing, I'm a nobody. Got some spare change?

John Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran, Donald Glover, Lupita Nyong'o (a bit of a cheat), Oscar Isaac, Bencio Del Toro, Donnie Yen, Diego Luna, Forest Whitaker, Wen Jiang, Riz Ahmed, Thandie Newton.

There has been diversity in the casts of the new movies so far, especially when compared to the OT and PT. You can talk about diversity, cast diverse actors and still hire white actors. The fact that the lead of the entire trilogy is a female was also a big step.

First, I said female. But, let's run through.

Males
Boyega, actual diverse character and a co-lead in TFA. Is subsequently sidelined in TLJ.
Donald Glover, he's playing Lando. That's not new. He's also only in about a quarter of the movie.
Oscar Isaac, approved.
Benecio Del Toro, also approved but is also a bit character that shows up at the back half of the film and then disappears.
Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, Diego Luna, Wen Jiang, Riz Ahmed, most boring set of characters ever but sure they meet the standard. They also all died.
Forest Whitaker, shows up for two seconds and then dies stupidly.

Females
Lupita Nyong'o, doesn't even count.
Kelly Marie Tran, already noted,
Thandie Newton, died after showing up for about two seconds.

When it comes to actual leads, you're either a white brunette lady or a white dude. If you manage to eek your way into a co-lead spot, then prepare to be knocked down by other white actors.

If you want to go back and watch the OT it still exists. This is supposed to be a sequel trilogy not remake trilogy.

Rey says it, not Kylo.
Yeah, this isn't that hard. She knows who they are, the whole time.

I think it's worth noting that his line about them dying and being buried in the Jakku desert may not be literal, but may be speculation or simply meant to illustrate how worthless they are. I don't think it's established that Rey knew they were dead, otherwise it'd be harder to accept where she started, but she definitely knew who and what they were (nobodies who sold her off).

There's no real reason for Kylo to lie about it, Rey acknowledges it's something she already felt herself but did not want to accept, it's implied in the cave mirror scene on Ach-To, and it's foreshadowed by Maz in TFA. Plus the whole larger part of the movie's message about how the Force doesn't just belong to an exclusive club of religious orders and famous bloodlines.

But it is fiction so no there's nothing stopping them from changing it, or anything else.

"They were nobody."

"They were filthy junk traders!"

Rey said it. Kylo affirmed it.
