I'm not sure who I feel more sorry for: the 1.1 million souls who bought the Nier Automata PC port, or the 0.9 million who willingly subjected themselves to the pain that is Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy.
I'm one of the latter, lol.

While I don't doubt the problems some had with NieR: Automata, it's not the case for everyone. I installed FAR from the start, and didn't encounter any problems whatsoever.

Trails in the Sky SC: 37,625
Trails in the Sky the 3rd: 14,844
Trails of Cold Steel: 47,881
Trails of Cold Steel II: 17,349

Ys VIII: 8,874
Tokyo Xanadu eX+: 10,220

goddamn these are depressingly low numbers. SC is a god-tier JRPG, and both Cold Steel games deserve better than this. FC is great of course but man, how could anyone get to the end of that game and not immediately jump into the sequel is beyond me.

So these are numbers tracked just by which accounts have at least 1 achievement unlocked from a game, right? If so, I wonder if it factors steam family sharing or if that's an insignificant enough number of users.

It should be counting everybody who has the game on their profile, whether they earned an achievement or not.

I say that because To The Moon is listed as having 1,086,773 players. The only achievement it has is rarity 24.2%. If it's only counting people with at least one achievement then there'd be 4.3m people who own the game, which is wildly outside Steamspy's old estimate of 1-2m. Plus, I'm able to view my achievement list for any game I own, even if I've never installed or played them. Attempting for a game I don't own just gives me an error message.

The list also includes numbers from games that haven't been released yet, such as Dragon Quest XI and Team Sonic Racing. Presumably preorders.

CoD WII sitting at 891,000 lmao. Won't stop people posting that MWII boycott image though.

Because mosts CoD are two entries, seprate for single player and multiplayer and for Black Ops 2, Zombies too is separate.

So these are just single player only and I think some challenge stuff in MW2. Black Ops 3, and Infinite Warfare are only one's that can be considered accurate.

These are numbers of players. It would include everyone that has played (I think 8 minutes). Including family shared copies.

Witcher 2 being within a million of Witcher 3 is surprising, I expected 3 to be twice as big.

TW3 sold pretty good on GoG too.. many people brought the game from there, because for example the price at release for TW3 on Steam for me was somewhere around 40 - 50 Euros, whereis on GoG they even had lower price for those who had previous Witcher games on GoG, so then the price atleast for me was 30 Euros

BTW why there isn't any Call of Juarez game in the list?

There's only one CoD WWII listed in there.

Also perhaps because GoG and The Witcher series are from the same company.

That 3rd dropoff... ugh, I hate seeing it every time.

Even better:

Bear in mind that these numbers reflect player count, not owner count, and that some games have more of a difference between playership and ownership. Many Falcom game players have bought but set aside games like Zwei to focus on Trails or Ys first.

That is true, I need to focus that it's players and not owners. Thus the number of owners for everything listed could be a lot higher.

I'm gonna guess the problem is the majority didn't finish it. I love Trails as well, but direct sequels to long, niche games get brutalized. Shame.

Pffft. Mobius Final Fantasy has more players than the rest of the series, outside of VII. Though how many are actually playing is a different story, obvs.

There is no way The 25th Ward has only been bought by ~800 people. The original sold over 11k! This data must be old.

How did Fortnite not crack the top 20?

I know you've already been corrected on this, but just a reminder to other people not really familiar with the pc marketplace landscape, there are numerous popular games not on Steam, such as:

Any Blizzard game -
Overwatch
Diablo
WoW (obviously)
Heroes of the Storm

Destiny
Minecraft
any EA game since 2013
most Microsoft games

and I'm sure there are a few others.

Looking at these numbers, I can see why Activision is pulling CoD from Steam. It's been on decline ever since MW2 and the player population numbers are usually abysmal. Might as well try Battlenet instead. I mean why not?

Also of note: MW2 was the first COD game sold only through Steam on PC. COD1, COD2, and COD4 had non-Steam physical versions.

Huh, Mankind Divided did a lot better than I thought. Actually not too far off Human Revolution (I'm pretty sure the Director's Cut was a free upgrade so all HR owners should have that version).

The upgrade wasn't free. It was $5 for a limited time.

Devil Halton's Trap
Yes, that's what I meant.

Blame Falcom. :)
They could have called it Tachikawa Something and that'd mean more. I have to work twice as hard to sell Falcom fans on actual Xanadu now.

That is true, I need to focus that it's players and not owners. Thus the number of owners for everything listed could be a lot higher.
The old SteamSpy algorithm definitely had higher numbers for all these gamers, calculating ownership based on slices, which makes me optimistic.

No Man's Sky - 1,396,577 - 275850

This is about 400k Higher than what I last saw on SteamSpy. Does this include refunds? Either way this is a mind blowing number to me.

Torchlight 2 sold really well. I know it was discounted a bunch over the years, but close to 5 million.
I wish Runic didnt shut down, i would of enjoyed another Torchlight game or future ports.
