I was completely surprised by it. Ditko is one of the legends that should be much more recognized than Stan Lee (hell, this should be true for most of Marvel creators since people think that Stan Lee created everything). His work on Spider-man was pretty good and his design was iconic but his art on Doctor Strange is where he had more creativity. Just amazing what he created in such time.

He and a few others made my childhood. I just hope he thought his creations were done justice when brought to film.

Marvel still hasn't acknowledge his passing.

Dan Slott did. As far as Marvel Comics goes to me, this is bigger than an official RIP on their official account.

Saddened to hear that Steve Ditko has passed away.
There are few people in this world that have had more of a positive effect on my life than this man.

I got to meet him once, back in the 90's when I was on staff at Marvel as their Art Returnist. I had the art for the first Squirrel Girl story, one of his last jobs for Marvel, and had to send him an art release form for it before I was allowed to send the originals back.

I'd never sent anything to him before-- and to my surprise, when I looked for his address in my giant rolodex, there was just a phone number and nothing more. It was the only card like that.

With a deep breath, I started calling the number. I was freaking out. I kept saying to myself, "You're calling Steve Ditko. You're calling Steve Ditko. You're calling Steve Ditko." I'd read every Steve Ditko comic known to man. This was one of the greatest idols of my entire life. And he'd earned the reputation of being the "J.D. Salinger of comics"-- in that he was pretty much off the grid and preferred it that way. And here I was calling him.

And he answered.

"Hello, Mr. Ditko," I said, "My name's Dan Slott, I'm the art returnist from Marvel Comics. I have some of your original art here, but I don't have an address to send you the art return form."

He said, "It's all right. I live in the city. I'll just come over. Is now a good time?"

I said, "Sure. That'd be great. Thank you."

And then I was saying to myself over and over again, "Steve Ditko is coming here. Steve Ditko is coming HERE."

He had on a sweater jacket and a cap, not a baseball cap. A proper cap. He was very polite and quite friendly. I knew he famously did NOT like to talk about Spider-Man or any of the characters he created or co-created for Marvel back in the day. So my entire inner-monologue was "Don't ask him about Spider-Man. Do NOT ask him about Spider-Man. Give the man his art and, DEAR GOD, don't ask him about Spider-Man."

I gave him the filled out form. He signed it. I gave him the art for the Squirrel Girl job, which was lovingly wrapped and bundled. He said, "Thank you." And I said "Thank YOU" (which I desperately wanted to mean "Thank you for EVERYTHING, but I so don't want to bug you."). He smiled the whole time. And left with the art. And with the door closed, I finally remembered how breathing is supposed to work.

I love Spider-Man. I love Spider-Man more than any fictional character in the history of literature & stories. I dedicated one 5th of my life to chronicling his adventures. I have had a very nice life because of Spider-Man. Thank you for EVERYTHING, Steve Ditko. I love every bit of creativity and passion that you have brought into this world-- and it has meant the world to me.

Definitely a legend. When your name becomes an art term, you know you've left a legacy behind - when someone says imagery is Ditkoesque, you know exactly what they mean.

Not many of those original creators left now, which is sad to think of. The 60s were such an insane time for comics, so much historic content being pumped out so quickly. I can only imagine what it must have felt like in the thick of it all.

An absolute legend. 90 years is a good run, but even still, what a loss of one of the truly greats.

Somewhere.
RIP.:( Spidey remains one of my favorite heroes from my childhood.

He also help continue on the Blue Beetle legacy by creating Ted Kord, the second Blue Beetle, and created the Question, both of which would go on into the DC Universe.

My life would be very different without Ditko's art. I can't imagine where I'd be without him, it's really devastating that he's gone.

One of Ditko's contributions that people tend to forget is that he is the one who designed the red and yellow Iron Man costume.

I've read all the Lee/Ditko Spider-Man stories countless times from childhood until now (Spider-Man is my all-time favorite superhero), and just last year I was finally able to read all of his Doctor Strange stuff. Spider-Man is without a doubt Ditko's greatest contribution (don't forget all those great Spidey villains) and I think his best work was the famous sequence from Amazing #33, but his most creative and imaginative artwork was done on Doctor Strange. This day was going to come eventually, but I'm still sad that he's gone. Rest in peace Mr. Ditko.

The character of Spider-Man has had such a profound influence on my life, I couldn't imagine life without the character. I have Steve Ditko for that, and I love him dearly. To be humble enough to stay out of the spotlight when you have created the greatest superhero of all time takes a certain kind of man. RIP you legend, and thank you for all your hard work. You will be missed, but never forgotten. Never. Spider-Man ain't going anywhere

Description from the video.
"This is an introduction to the comic book artist Steve Ditko, with a particular focus on some of his most recent work. Many opinions, on which you may agree or disagree. Audio captured on the fly in 2018 at a live talk, paired with slides. PLEASE NOTE that I misidentify Ditko's birthplace as Jonestown, PA, in Lebanon County, rather than Johnstown, PA, in Cambria County. All artwork, characters, images and likenesses and related elements depicted herein are copyright and trademark their respective owners. Thank you to Ben Katchor, Austin English and Tucker Stone."

I just finished up his run of Spider-Man last weekend. Peter Parker and Spider-Man have such cool complexity and drama as well as action. It's funny reading all the letters talking about how this wall crawling, adhesive swinging, teenager is so "realistic." But what makes it even better is that I totally understand what they mean.

I think what made his art so incredible was how dedicated to the craft he was. He was a self driven person, for better or for worse in terms of beliefs. A legend.

A large part of it was Steve's reclusive nature and his belief in Randian Objectivism prevented him from using the media and being able to build his own financial spotlight away from Lee. But yeah, Marvel still should have treated him leagues better financially.

His work will continue to entertain people for hundreds of years. Very few people are lucky enough to leave such a legacy to the world. Rest in Peace.
