This shit used to scare me and my big bro and still creeps me out now a little ;_;. My older bro used to just skip the intro cinematic. I find that game sprites just convey more emotion and creepiness than 3d games. Dunno why. Look at this:

Man... can you feel how intense this is? He looks so crazy wtf?

EDIT: I used to be terrified of Mortal Komabt as a kid. Shit was legit horror fighter back then...

it's what led me to like streetfighter instead. That plus the screams that sound straight out of hell. The muddy looking sprites aided too.

Anyways, you guys got any examples of creepy sprite based images from games? I want to spooked this weekend.

This scorpion boss thing from Exhumed used to unsettle me. You had to drop down into her lair and it wasn't always clear which direction she would come from. She also made all these horrible noises, combined with the awesome soundtrack which used to make me genuinely a bit shivery.

Oh your parents thought they got you a dolphin simulator?

dims

Game was about time traveling with aliens, pink floyd style music and some creepy ass ocean exploration and claustrophobic shit.

Great game though and I would love a new one.

I don't know. Maybe because I was a horror fan and avid reader as well as gamer as a kid, I cannot fathom how someone would be afraid of pixel art. I'm not trying to be rude, I just honestly don't get it.

Shroobs in Mario and Luigi partners in time. Especially their elder princess.

They terrified me as a kid and still do now.
That a Mario game would go this far XD.

Parasitic aliens that seek to kill, consume and destroy everything for survival wich destroyed their own planet. And they got beat by baby tears.

But everything digital is technically pixels in varying resolutions. Saying this might seem obtuse, but I don't think whether it's 2D or 3D affects whether it's scary or not

I think part of it was because, as a kid, I didnt understand what or why something was happening. Why were Mr.X's hands coming from the side of the screen before a large face appears in the middle like that? Why did the Mortal Kombat combatants have to tear each other in half at the end of the match? How is this guy spitting acid from his mouth? I feared the unknown. Back then, everything had a bit of mystery to it.

Some imagery, like this:

Is just downright haunting anyway. I can imagine how scary this would be animated. Picture this guy walking up on you looking like this. His face is so detailed. His expression is so heightened. Man... I just dont feel 3d can captures this in a still either.

Nothing scared me, but there were LOTS of creepy stuff on the Amiga

If we count horror games than anything in Waxworks, Elvira 1 & 2

Otherwise Moonstone(Dark Souls before Dark Souls)

Sadly the gif has a very low framerate, here two at higher speed to get an idea how it would have looked

Also this:

no it's not a joke about the quality of the movie or the game(that was WAY ahead of the time), it IS creepy, don't you believe me? Just add the music

But all the sections of the game with music are creepy.

YES. Great post, this one. I was terrified of these dudes back when playing Space Quest 4. I have a distinct memory of leaving my computer running on one of the first screens of the game, and seeing one of these guys for the first time. I would've been 4/5 years old at the time, and it was TERRIFYING.

Meet Nurse Edna, she's from the point and click game Maniac Mansion released in 1987, The image is from a modern fan remake thoo.
She lives in a really big and creepy house together with the rest of her insane family who has kidnapped Sandy, Dave's, the Main character, girlfriend.
She's roaming the house and whenever she runs into Dave or one of his friends she'll start to chase them and throw them into the prison cell, that the family keeps in their cellar. She also promises to do unspeakable things to them later on.
Oh and the reason for the blue skin tone is because she's under influence of a meteor and probably haven't slept for a long time.

She terrified me when I was 5-6 years old and she still makes me anxious whenever I play the game many years later.

The closest game to give me that feeling of fear is Resident Evil 7.

You are going to laugh at me, but those "Helloooooow" still haunt me in my darkest dreams. And that music? Shit was scarier than Sid's house.

The faces in the Game Boy camera are straight-up horrific. I never had one as a kid, and I didn't see these images until I was in my twenties, and I actually still have nightmares about them every now and then.

"Who are you running from?"

Those are absolutely terrifying.

Diablo 1 had some great artwork and when combined with the music it creates an environment that has you on edge the entire game.

Having this thing get up and start attacking was terrifying as a kid.

The sprite itself was scary but the music and art style of the room being completely alien to the rest of the world, the locked door, and the buildup to it didn't help either.

Thanks for the nightmares, Sonic CD! For those who haven't seen this, it's way creepier in game (moreso with the US soundtrack) though:

And if you don't know and are curious: according to this wiki, the message reads:

"Infinite Fun. Sega Enterprises. -Madzin".

Apparently this is a message from Masato Nishimura, one of the landscape designers of Sonic CD. "Madzin"(which is pronounced the same as "majin") was Masato Nishimura's nickname since he was a child, "majin" being an alternate way to read his given name.
