Man we were professional in that. Sterling was pretty dross at times but everyone else was damn solid. Kinda nice to be able to watch RUS V CRO later with scouting in my head!

If ITS COMING HOME sounds to you like a boast or being cocky because we invented football or something like that it's not.

Here are the lyrics. This was written in a time when England had lost on penalties in Italia 90, not qualified for WC 94 in the US and we were going into Euro 96.

It's about how down all England fans and press etc are on our own team from having a bad period of underperforming, and the hope that some fans still have despite all the negativity. It's coming home is referring to us winning again after 1966 is mentioned every time England play as some sort of unreachable mythic benchmark

It's popular again because England have been the worst they've ever been recently, ten years ago missing Euro qualification under Mclaren, having a talented team that couldnt play together, having Hodgson as manager and not making out of the world cup group stage 2014 and being knocked out by Iceland Euro 2016 with a population the size of a English city.

This world cup it's been used ironically because we've got a very young team with almost zero expectations that we can win and everyone happy just to be getting out of the group stage. It seemed like it's never been further from COMING HOME but this team has shown a great team spirit and Southgate has done a good job as manager and is a likeable guy - possibly because he knows what it's like to miss a penalty that meant England got knocked out of the semis in Euro 96. That makes the song even more relevant.

So TLDR - it's not bragging or an expectation, it's about dreaming of winning again
Great post

Stones?

He's earning a fuckton of money, playing regularly in the best team in England, and one of the best in the world, winning trophies under one of the best coaches in the world. And English players hardly ever go overseas.

What other clubs could possibly even tempt him? I'm sure my local five a side team would be interested in Stones too.

I thought he was rumoured to be leaving in the summer for first team football?

I like the lad, but it will hard for him to get in the back 2 in that club.

Did anyone watch the Sweden/Mexico game? How did they score 3 goals? lel

Because despite your attempts to dilute and simplify the game, styles will always make matches. Sweden are a big powerful side that play to their strengths and it's been a problem for the likes of Mexico, Germany and Italy. Fortunately we see this style week in week out in the English domestic leagues, a lot of focus is put on how to break down big, physical teams with low block defences.

We seen the results today.

The thread didn't slow down because the haters left, the thread slowed down because yesterday we had two interesting games from the good side of the bracket and today is not nearly as exciting if you don't root for any of the teams.

It is amazing how slow this thread got lol.

As if half the posters just banished in an instant.
This thread is a mess at the best of times and at the moment it's a mess of English patriotism/pride. I'm not saying that's necessarily bad but it certainly isn't as interesting to post in.

Salty american fans holding on to teams they shouldn't and shitting up thread.

U then have zatt and his precious fans in brazil ot shitting this place up when England played and brazil.mod standing by there side. Funny how after brazil lost yesterday they all went back to the pool of tears in brazil ot to swim together

Come back in 4years with a guy thay doesnt roll from grass hitting his leg
The Brazil OT was fascinating to read. ZattMurdock crying persecution, continuing to allege racism/xenophobia, and commenting about how he'd report posts and contact mods. FFS don't bother defending Neymar's embarrassing acting and maybe things will be easier in life

the amount of absolute shit we've had directed at us after every game the least you'd think they would do is show back up so we can rub it in their face. cowards.

Howling at how slow this thread is moving right now. Had the result been the opposite the thread would be moving at light speed with the flow of shit posts.

Fuck it, I've been out, bought a shedload of beer, and I'm getting drunk tonight. Reaching the semis for the first time in 28 years, and in such fine style, is worthy of letting my inner chav have some Stella for a change.

Just got back from the Cinema. They had the match up on their big screen today.

It was fucking magic. Can't remember the last time I felt like this about English football.

Also worth remembering that the song was released for Euro 96 which was held in England, the 'football coming home' part was a theme of the tournament.

It only really stuck because it was a good song.

Thanks I forgot to mention that bit. Also it's a non-official song written by two friends who enjoy football, rather than the corporate trash they produce as the official tournament song.

I couldn't care less. It's been used more and more since they have progressed at the start of the competition it was endearing now it's fucking English hubris again

The funny thing is I'm English. I was cheering on England during Colombia and when they won the penalty shoot out I thought shit they might actually do it. They deserved to win today. Sweden were shit but it's the terminology and arrogance behind the word "home" it's the same rose tinted goggles shit that got us brexit and Liverpool still sucking on Beatles fame.

That's just your interpretation. Maybe it's cos you're not in the country but the vibe is different here and I hate nationalism and English pride and all that shit that got us brexit. That's one of the things that makes it hard for me to get behind the national team because of the ENGURLAND shite but this year is different.

(The Liverpool remark is just plain strange - are they meant to pretend the Beatles don't exist? Maybe Stratford-upon-Avon should stop sucking on Shakespeare fame too. )

I noticed that the way both teams handled long balls was very telling. When England played long, I thought Kane and Sterling did a great job of contesting and Henderson, Alli and especially Lingard did a great job of winning the loose ball from knockdowns. Meanwhile on the other end, whilst Maguire was immense in the air and didn't lose a single duel, I don't think Walker won a single duel. That's something we are going to need to find a solution for because all of Sweden's best chances came from loose balls after a long one clipped towards Walker.

I'm so nervous for the game against Belgium but hopefully France guarantees their final spot. I would totally be down for a France vs England final so that even if we lose I could still be happy.

Fucking hell!

Reading waaaaayyy too much into it. I'm also guessing you don't really care too much for football. I'd concentrate on something you do like if I were you.

Yeah remember when Gareth got a double decker bus with "it's coming home" on the side of it? Nah me neither.
