I just found this full concert of Power Trip in really high quality (both video and audio). This year's album is awesome.

Unfortunately looks like they've lost a few original members since the reunion several years ago, but still OG vocalist and one guitarist. Considering flying out for The Law

Song of the day

!T.O.O.H.! - Řád a Trest - Progressive/Avant-garde/Deathgrind from the Czech Republic

Going through my music library, I had a hard time finalizing my selection for SOTD because there are so many songs which I want to share, but I settled on !T.O.O.H.! because this is a band that I am always too eager share/recommend. There is a lot going on in their music and it may take a few listens to fully realize the beauty of their perfectly blended chaos.

This song is just weird as hell which I liked immediately but the rest of the album didn't catch on as well for me.

Song of the Day

Taake - Over Bjoergvin Graater Himmerik IV

Taake for my money is one of the most consistently good black metal bands out there. Pretty much all their albums are amazing and I had a hard time picking just one song. I really love the break that comes in this song about 4 minutes in. Hoest writes some great melodies but can still be head banging and speedy. I think there's a lot for people to like in Taake even if you aren't typically into black metal.

Ahhh Taake...

Haven't heard of these guys. My only experience with "murder metal" is Macabre, who I was absolutely in love with for quite a few years. I wish I could find the lyrics to these Church of Misery tracks, as I wasn't able to understand everything from the track itself.

The band always includes the name of the person the song is about in the title, so it's easy to learn a bit more about them. For example, SHotgun Boogie is about James Oliver Huberty.

Unfortunately, whoever uploaded the song to youtube didn't include it.

I'm familiar with most of the names referenced in the songs, so it's not that I want to find out who it's about. I am interested in the lyrical content. Vocals/lyrics are what draws me to metal the most, and I sing/growl along quite often. If I don't know the words, it's somewhat awkward.

I saw Macabre live once and i remember it as one of the most fun live performances. Lance Lencioni's presence on stage is...well...special. :)

I'm trying the new Converge album, the band sounds good but I can't stand Jacob's whiny yelling vocals. Much prefer his harsh stuff

Whoa, this one's weird. Can't really say what I think of it based on just one listen, definitely an acquired taste here, but I'm intrigued to say the least.

Now I got to say, that I'm not really into black metal that much but this one I liked. Got some great melodies, and while the production is somewhat lo-fi, it's still miles ahead of the fart-in-a-tin-can sound that some of the more obscure bands have. Going to check that album asap.

Holy shit! Church of Misery is such a great band! Honestly, I was thinking about putting I motherfucker as my next song of the day. You just can't beat that drum beat. I actually saw them in Tuska open air 2011, a really cool show. The guitarist thrashed his guitar at the end and threw it to the audience, somebody got a nice memento.

Awesome! Love that song. They've been so consistent with their albums. Even the last album, with American guest musicians and Scott Carlson on vocals was really good. Tatsu is a masterful songwriter.

What are some of your favorite metal albums from France?

I've always loved this album from Agressor. It is just such a heavy sampling of death/thrash

Agressor - Towards Beyond

1604.jpg

Wow, never heard this before but it is fucking awesome! I definitely get a few Altars of Madness vibes. Even starts with a backwards riff in the intro.

When it comes to death/thrash from France, Massacra is the one that jumps to my mind.

Ahab - The Sermon

Sorry for the late post -- still recovering from the Primitive Man / Bell Witch show on Tuesday night...

Staying with Funeral Doom this week. Let's go to sea.
Ahab.. These guys are atop the funeral doom list year after year. You like beautiful melodies? Crushing riffs? Nasty gutterals? Nautical/ocean shit???!!

With the ocean theme, I'm assuming their name references Captain Ahab from Moby Dick.

Anyway, the vocals aren't my thing, but definitely some cool riffs in there.

You got it.
They stick with that theme - The Boats of Glenn Carrig is their latest release (2015). It has a lot more of clean vocals and the harmonies I was talking about early. https://youtu.be/7304N-1C_6A (and how cool is that artwork?)
Probably easier digestible but I wanted to pick something that pushed their theme.

I didn't know black metal was this appreciated in Era. Gonna have to spam a bit with my tastes here, soon.

I assume you're already familiar with Virus and Ved Buens Ende, right?

Gotta hit those bandcamp/youtube for new Krallice/Aosoth and some more soon, too.

For now, I'll leave this here, really good album from Spain/Cataluña this year:

There's more where that came from if you enjoyed it.

I recently learned that there's a black metal band fronted by Phil Anselmo. Think what you may of him but you can't deny that he has some pretty insane vocal skills. It's a pretty good song to boot!

A treat for the black metal enthusiasts of metalEra. So, I've been watching some documentaries on youtube and came across this three part series:

These guys are certainly interesting characters, especially Leviathan and Xasthur. Gives a good insight on what kind of an artist it takes to create their art.

Nice pick! Haven't heard of these guys before but I like what I'm hearing. A plus for the subject matter as well, it's a refreshing theme to be sure.

LTTP, but these guys rock so hard, it was like a revelation listening to The Second Coming. Flawless album, too. Glad he's back to making music after announcing the hiatus of sorts.

I gave a listen to their last album and found it interesting, but didn't finish it. Gonna give it another try.

Re: Trivium

Trivium is a bit of a weird thing for me. I listened to Ascendancy back when it came out, but those were still early metal days for me. It's not the kind of thing I listen to nowadays, but the guitars made such an impact on me that I find myself listening to the first 6 or so songs in the album every once in a while. Really reminds me of early Metallica.

Never listened to another of their albums. Ascendancy sounded way too clean, and I didn't find the drums very enticing. But they do have some beautiful songs in there.

I can't believe it's been eleven years since this came out. Outside of it just being a really amazing album, it also has a special place for me since it was around that time I was starting to get into (funeral) doom and COTWS played a big part in that.

On a related note, I don't think I've ever seen these guys being mentioned in here or the old thread:

Been out for a couple days with chronic migraines...
Anyway this is an excellent pick, Taake is amazing, and it must have been really hard to pick a song, so many so good :)

New Aosoth album in full before its release tomorrow

Been lisening to this today, its very good. Aosoth as been improving from album to album. Between them and VI and the return of Arkhon Infaustus, french BM is "good" hands!

Blind Guardian is a german power metal band, although in their early days there was a bigger thrash/speed influence in their music contrary to todays more symphonic metal sound they adopted.
I picked a song from "A Night at the Opera" ,what i like about the album is its sound, the overlaid vocals, choirs and the orchestral feel. The cover artwork is a good indicator of what to expect.
It's just a well coordinated "mess" and i love it.

Whaaaaaaaat that was a little weird, I was looking at this thread thinking, maybe I should post about the new tribulation, then at the very end I see this. Dang. I like this thread a lot. Tribulation put on one hell of a show last time I saw them (2 years ago).
