TotalBiscuit did help harass loads of people through GamerGate.

He definitely had apologized for that long before he passed. But people like to just dance on others' grave anyway.

Edit: damn, so many people here that are ok with that tweet. I guess you haven't had much experience with cancer or death? Absolutely disgusting.

Arenanet should have just told her to stop being so aggro to their customers and given her a warning.

-Price goes incredibly aggro on one dude for not much reason
-Campaign immediately gets started to get her fired
-She gets fired

These are all absurd overreactions. Calm down.

I do feel that people have very weird views of Twitter though. People want the non-monetary benefits of being a public figure and none of the people asking somewhat annoying to very annoying questions. You can make your account private or make your mentions only Verifieds and People You Follow if you don't want to interact with randos.

She chose to tweet about the product she's involved in. Customers joined the conversation in a peaceful and respectful manner. She didn't have to respond at all. But she did. With blatant toxicity.

Let's not pretend that game devs have no agency when operating on Twitter. Because they do

Yep. This is pretty cut and dry.

A toxic and belligerent attitude like that is only going to cause more problems for your company later. Any respectable manager or boss is going to fire a person like that.

If I was an asshole to one of my employer's customers regarding my job's products, even if it was on my personal account, I would get fired.

Cut the bullshit. You may have assholes jumping on the train after the fact, but they're irrelevant. She earned this.
And I don't appreciate how multiple factions are jumping in to overcomplicate and control the narrative here.
Sums it up for me, when I first read about this there was no GG involved, but they just came in late to "take credit". Stop giving them attention too.
As for her all I can say is, the Customer is God.

What? I really can't blame people that were targets of a hate group that TB was a prominent member of to find the silver lining in his passing. It's not right, but it's understandable. As such I really don't believe it should be a factor in getting anyone fired.

Regardless of whether you find it understandable or not, it's incredibly unprofessional and grounds for being fired.

She's free to have an opinion and voice it, but she's not free from the consequences of being unprofessional and acting against the company's regulations.

99% of contracts in game industry tell you to not discuss anything related to the game outside of sharing it to facebook/twitter if you're not customer service/relations/marketing, and most people in industry will tell you to not interact with the games fans at all.

Regardless of the shitty context surrounding this, and I'm sure both of them will have no trouble finding jobs elsewhere, the company was entirely within it's right to fire them for breaking contract.

There are exceptions to this of course, but it's few and far between and more frequently people in higher positions.

Totalbiscuit was a fucking terrible person who was all too happy to allow his rabid fanbase to harass people. His cancer does NOT erase the pain he caused. Of fucking course people would be happy if their abuser disappeared.

It's basic common decency to at least keep that shit private until the ones close to him have had their time for mourning. Using someone's death as a platform to air your grievances the day of is disgusting.

So many people thinking what she said was okay, suddenly I'm not surprised that there are people who grin like idiots when Kamiya insults their moms and blocks them.

Having a somewhat understandable overreaction to a single person is not shitting all over the customer base.
It wasn't "understandable" as far as most people are concerned. The guy she talked to just wanted to have discussion, and when she start flipping out he apologized more than once, even though he really had no reason to at all.

This is a very healthy approach on this subject, clearly.
It works for the 90% of the devs who choose not to engage with players on a professional basis.
Larger developers have strict social media policies that forbid official discourse with players because they know Joe and Jane Dev can't handle their shit without social media training.
Even with mandatory social media training, e.g. at Riot Games, people are still fucking up constantly, sometimes with legal consequences.

If you know you're the type to lash out and take criticism poorly, why engage at all? It's silly.

they don't go ballistic because in the industry men are seen as the default. on a whole they aren't treated like they dont know anything.

have a conversation with any woman, but especially a woman who is knowledgeable and has a decade or more of experience and see what they say about being talked down to and patronized. I guarantee every single one will have more than one story about that.

now multiply that by the number of "Just asking questions" jackasses in gaming and you can see how it becomes exhausting and quite frankly infuriating.
Again this is an industry where you have fans and by nature they will suggest things to improve the thing they love. You think Casey Hudson one of the most experienced developers in the industry isn't getting suggestions himself? Basically if you're a man or a woman and you have a twitter account for a product that has fans you're 100% getting suggestions on how to improve the game. Many women are actually suffering from sexism in the gaming industry. She is definitely not one of them in this case.

It's pretty simple isn't it? Don't be an asshat to your costumers is that really so hard to understand?

Having some nobody suggest dialogue trees to a lifelong professional came off rude to me, and I'm a guy.

But this highlights my point. Game devs have to sit down and pat gamers on the head for literally every dumb suggestion imaginable or they'll whine like crazy. Movies, books, and music do so much better with this.

If she didn't want people to offer their thoughts on her posts then she should have made her account private or not post to a private forum.

She deserved to be fired.

No surprise people here are thinking that because a bunch of assholes also called for her to be fired then she shouldn't have faced consequences for acting like an asshole on a public forum representing her company.

I'm a minority, and have been called racial slurs in past jobs where I had to interact with end-users on the company's public tech support forums.

I would NEVER respond to the people saying that shit, that kind of stuff gets blocked/deleted and you move on. Now if a co-worker in my actual office even so much as displays a SLIGHT hint of racism towards me - I'd send their ass to HR in a heartbeat. But if it's some random fuck on the internet? I would just send an email to my manager like "Hey just FYI there's some racist idiots on the forum, gonna ban them, these are there account #s, thanks" and my boss says "ok, np, good riddance.".

That's how you handle shit when you deal with the public. Don't make a scene of it and make your business look bad, that doesn't help anyone.

I dunno that shit might not be especially rude but it does feel patronizing and condescending
I can't think of a way to tone down the same argument any more than what's in those tweets. Someone who toke offence to that just simply can't take any criticism. Which, if you brows through GW2's team interactions with the community, the firing surely makes sense.

Sure, but if that happened Arena should have said that and the firing would be ok. Everyone in this particular situation overreacted.
Even if there were previous instances Arenanet would be wise not to discuss them publicly. I've had to fire people before and HR always makes sure to let me know that I should not discuss the reasons for said firings with anyone. Even if they apply for another job and the job calls for a reference all I can say is "Yes, they worked here and this was their job."

She brought gender into something that didn't need to be. She WORKS for Anet. The twitter user gave absolutely no indication that he was criticizing her because she was a woman.

She did an AMA, the user found it interesting but didn't agree on some points. Tried to start a dialogue with her and was pretty respectful, at least to the average person.

For some reason, she found this as an attack on her gender as if she is 100% completely free from any criticism, and any criticism against her must be because of misogyny.

Like, come on.

Where's the apology?

Dude doesn't get a pass because he's dead. No one wished him dead that I can see (he wished multiple people dead on Twitter as it happens) and I'm not happy that he's dead. However, if Jessica Price was harassed and now she isn't because he passed away, I can understand why she would think that way.

They dont have to run 24/7 service. They can either respond kindly or not respond at all to fairly innocuous and well intentioned feedback. She chose to make her twitter account pubic and open to responses to her tweets.
She chose to tweet about the product she's involved in. Customers joined the conversation in a peaceful and respectful manner. She didn't have to respond at all. But she did. With blatant toxicity.

Let's not pretend that game devs have no agency when operating on Twitter. Because they do
So either she goes against her personal values and puts on a fake show of kindness, or she's bullied into silence, fearing public retribution?
Again, putting aside if the response was disproportionate, I was mainly commenting on the fact that personal brands are being forced to cooperate with public brands in a way that's constant, stretching into the past, present and future. It's just all pretty dystopic, ESPECIALLY when, instead of being reprimanded like she probably should have, they outright fire her AND the employee that stood up for her.

For real? She publicly tweeted that she was happy Total Biscuit died and she was unprofessional and antagonistic towards a fan who respectfully tried to engage in a conversation with her. This has nothing to do with the alt-right. Reset is out here again making assumptions without doing any research

For real? That's awful if true.

Edit - never mind, I've seen the screenshot. She definitely could have phrased it better.

She made an issue about gender when it was not possible to construe it as such be Derore.

Even without her comments about gender the way she acted was ill concieved.

She didn't attack simply a fan she attacked a fan who actively makes content for the community they both serve so her actions would be way more visible and harder for arena net to ignore. All of her comments in response came off like she was a total dick. It required some form of disciplinary action.

I'm still confused about why the other person was fired and I hope this thread clears that up.

While I think her being fired for her comments seems extreme, I'm really puzzled as to why the guy was fired? From the article it doesn't sound like he said anything hostile or unreasonable at all.

Only possible reason to bring it up would be that if Arenanet has talked to her in the past about saying shit online and this encounter was one strike too much.

She pretty much went 0-100 in her response to the dude about branching dialogue. like damn

Exactly lololol. I had to reread that portion of the article a couple of times to see if I missed something. No where does he even remotely mention her gender. I mean, I sympathize with the shit she may have to deal with but this was certainly not the time or place for the response. Still seems kind of drastic to fire her over it.

In a vacuum, yeah, it's just the guy wanting to have a discussion and express his opinion. However, the reality of her past experiences, both personally and in general for women in her position, she's clearly used to things going a certain way when people disagree with her and imply that she's wrong about something she clearly knows about and she acted accordingly. It's entirely understandable in context of everything, even if the guy wasn't intending things to happen that way.

And, to his credit, he made it clear he didn't intend for her to take things that way and bowed out when he recognized that things went sour.

I used to think GamerGate was dead after people stopped calling my house to yell at me about shit I had nothing to do with. That feels like such a long time ago now, and it turns out it didn't die, it just kind of spread into every nook and cranny of the industry. We all should've done a better job of clamping down on this kind of bullshit when the movement was still new, now the fucking White House is full of Gamergaters and this kind of harassing, destructive behavior has become the norm.

People should be free to say what they want on Twitter and not have it affect their employment as long as they aren't being racist, sexist or homophobic. You want to be a dickhead to a dev on Twitter, they should have the right to tell you you're being a dickhead and not fear for their jobs. The customer is not always right.

I keep going back to Matt Kessler threatening to kill a dude on Twitter, and then not only getting his account back and no punishment from his company, he made a bit of it on a Giant Bomb livestream, with the possibility for more bits to come from it on that pseudo wrestling thing they all do.

If the person they fired had issues in the past couldn't they imply that without naming them?
Again, how is that positive for the person getting fired? Even an implication of "this person, in general, is actually hell to work with" could end up affecting future job opportunity. At least in this case, the implication could be that it was a one-off deal.

That aside though, what makes you think you or anyone other than the parties involved entitled to this kind of knowledge?
