We have to go deeper: a subseries within the trails subseries.
Liberl actually starts to introduce proper courts of law, and after barely avoiding a personal insolvency due to irresponsible Strega purchases, Estelle is forced by the Bracer Guild to make some money as an attorney.

Estelle Bright: Stellar Attorney: Trails and Tribulations.

I posted this in the "Spin-offs you'd like to see'-thread a while ago
Trails of Conquest: simulation/turnbased-strategy RPG set in the world of the Trails/Kiseki series where you pick a faction and then duke it out over the Zemurian continent.
Managing your faction is turnbased, and you can research, recruit and train nameless goons (or even your favorite characters from the games!), use diplomacy, take care of internal strife, move your troops, etc.
Actual battles use something like the Valkyria Chronicles combat system.
I'd play it.

I'd buy two copies of a 2D fighting game spin-off developed by ArcSys (either Blazblue or Guilty Gear Xrd/DBFZ engine works).

That's a cheap price. I am also curious what the added functionalities are. Something tells me that Falcom has the ability and knowledge to make more fundamental changes to their game like UI alterations, so maybe they'll trash the battle wheel and use CS3's command system.

Pretty curious how they'll manage save data transfer between PS3/Vita and PS4. Is there any precedent on the matter?
When transferring between PS3 and Vita, you had to upload your save file to somewhere. I imagine the PS4 would be able to read from wherever that is.

That also shows that they didn't do clear data transfer from Sen II to III on purpose.

Does the improved audio quality mean they won't sound like they're in a recording booth this time? Also, no added voices, huh? :mishy:

Somewhat intermittent reminder to play all of the Sky games before you play Cold Steel 3
Just reminded myself to post this after doing a particular chapter 3 sidequest...

Hopefully, if Xseed publishes in NA they'll be able to add the additional PC version VOs even if Falcom doesn't include any in the Japanese version.

I wouldn't count on it, since XSEED apparently wanted to do more voice acting for the PS3/Vita versions and Falcom said no. More likely than not PS4 will be similar.

To be honest it's hard to tell unless someone wants to go and do a manual count. CS3 feels much larger in text scope than CS1 and CS2 individually. Rean is voiced during major story moments but he's mute pretty much every other time. All the other characters like the old and new Class VIII feel appropriately voiced. However it still has that annoying thing where everyone is voiced except Rean. Or the most bizarre; Rean will be voiced in the beginning of the scene, then switch to unvoiced.

That image that shows A-List voice actors costing more than all other forms of production is starting to become more and more real. I think Falcom decided to press their PS4 advantage and spend a bit more on the graphical front (including 60fps, which is amazing) while reining in voice costs a bit. This is a chance for the localization to add more English voices but like someone said above it is possible Falcom will decline performing the extra work.

Some random thoughts regarding VAs: Chiplock better start exercising his cool and suave/sexy military teacher man voice since I don't think he's been in a role quite like this one. And I think it would be marvelous if Aurelia was voiced all the time in CS3 since I think her English VA is better and has more range. Whoever Yuna's Englsh voice actress is has her work cut out for her though, especially for that scene in Chapter 2, so they better pick hers carefully (her Japanese voice actress can be a bit too hyper for my liking in non-serious scenes though, so it's not like her voice is perfect all the time). Muze and Ash have extremely good Japanese VAs (especially Ash) and Elise's JP voice has greatly improved since her voice lost a lot of the "little sister anime high pitch". Ash in particular is going to be troublesome to translate and voice in English because he speaks rough and rudely but he's not aggressively antagonistic. I find that in English it's pretty hard to translate these types of characters without making them sound more malicious than they really are. Towa's English voice is better than her Japanese one by a long shot, not as squeaky but still sounds cute which is always a plus, but Laura's voice in Japanese is fucking god-tier, especially her battle yell on her power-up craft. So Laura's English VA is going to have to step it up.

All right random stream of thoughts over.

Hopefully, Falcom made this decision BEFORE the complaints of Rean's lack of VO on a lot of his lines.

It was during the initial localization. XSEED found the inconsistencies with Rean's lines weird and wanted to fix that in the English release, but the request was denied by Falcom.

That probably won't change with Sen 3 or the PS4 ports of 1 and 2, assuming English releases.

The only thing I question is how CS3 would work. If Falcom doesn't allow any additional voice acting in the PS4 release of the game, but XSEED has a PC port done, will they include the extra voice acting as a PC-exclusive feature? Or will the PC version take a step backwards after the improvements made to CS1 and 2?

If it's anything like the way Warriors Orochi 3 worked, the original versions of the game will be updated to allow you to upload your save data to retrieve on PS4 and the new game should have an option to retrieve that data.
If they don't do it that way, I'm guessing they may somehow utilize a retrieval method through the PS+ cloud storage feature (if that's possible), however I'm expecting it will likely be the former.

Didn't Sen 3 have less voiced lines as well?
Sen3 is the first game i followed in Japanese during release (with the barebones knowledge i have) and honestly i hope XSEED can fix the inconsistencies this time because it truly is jarring at moments.
A spoiler free example late game of a lore dump;
Character A starts voiced dialogue, character B chimes in with voiced dialogue. Then character A replies back without voiced dialogue after which character C chimes in with one voiced line to go unvoiced for the while scene having character A going voiced on and off.

I can understand that Falcom has difficulties with getting funds for everything but the way they did it is jarring.

It would be strange if XSEED could add further VA for the PC version of Cold Steel 3 (like they did for the previous ones), but not the console versions. Could see people being pissed of about that.

PS4 wise it depends on Falcom, with the PS3 and Vita version they simply said no because they did not want to code that in

I don't get why they don't just go with either full voice or no voice at all for each scene.

Absolutely, they at least should pay attention to what is voiced and when because the way they did it with Sen3 was not a good look imo. It throws you off a lot when a story progressing scene happens and the voicing is so inconsistent, i'd almost compare it akin to '90's translation quality tbh...

So, I'm assuming this includes Crossbell also, correct?

If so, well, the wait can't be worse than for SC...

I counted from first Japanese release year to first English release year.

FC - 7 years
SC - 9 years
3rd - 10 years
Zero - at least 7 years
Ao - at least 6 years
CS - 2 years
CS II - 2 years
CS III - ?

There was a 4 year gap between the English releases of FC and SC. A year (and bit) gap between SC and the 3rd. And a year gap between CS and CS II.

Considering that the Sky trilogy is one of my favorite things, it's strange that I only now got around to watching the anime, for some reason I assumed it was subpar, but I was proven wrong.
Even though it only covers some parts of SC, what's there is well done, the animation during fights is better than I expected and Estelle continues to be the best.

You probably had that impression because it was heavily criticized for basically just being fan-service instead of a proper retelling of the game's story, and being loose with the canon. There was also criticism about the English sub release in general, since it was marketed as an anime adaption of Trails in the Sky, but covers events in SC and was released before SC was localized.

Your impressions pretty well reflect what I remember seeing when it came out, but without the "DO NOT WATCH THIS BECAUSE IT IS ACTUALLY SC, WAIT FOR THE GAME" disclaimer.

Hey everyone! We have a ResetEra Falcom Discord server for more relaxed/casual chats about anything Falcom-related (and a bunch of non-Falcom stuff, too).

I set up the server right before the old forum fell so a bunch of you are already part of it, but if you aren't, just shoot me a PM if you want an invite!

At this rate Ao's translation will probably hit 100% by the end of the year. It's nearly at 90% now and has been flying for the last couple months.

I just question the fact that it looks a lot of it is contributions from Flame, who I didn't think knew Japanese. He was the one responsible for the machine translated Nayuta patch.

I say that that the time gap between Japanese and English release for CSIII will likely be 2 years as well with CSIV being 1 year after like CS I to CS II. If somehow CSIII will hit West next year I would be really happy but I'm not holding my breath.

It has to go through editing anyway. I wouldn't worry, engrish won't make it through that.

You can't really edit a machine translation effectively though. If Flame's contributions to the translation are lightly touched up machine translations, a lot of that might still end up needing completely retranslated during editing. And that kind of defeats the purpose of calling the lines "translated."

Not saying it's definitely the case that the contributions are definitely machine translated lines, I might be misremembering and he did/does know Japanese.

So... I just finished Cold Steel I. Stayed up to 4AM for it. Took me roughly 100 hours.

I hope the sequel is released early in 2018 >________<
