My TV has great apps, I stopped I using Xbox for media when I got it.

This includes iPlayer UHD which I've been using to watch the World Cup.

iTunes has a massive library of 4K HDR films that can often be bought for incredible prices. And free upgrades to any applicable movies you already own is a massive benefit too.

On top of that, the quality is also generally very good.

Yep, this is the main reason.

Also I got 2 apple 4k tvs for free from DirecTV. Picked one up in store and they also shipped me one.

Also the DTV now stream is by far the best quality on an ATV. It's great.

Doesn't it act as a "hub" for HomeKit? That's at least one reason I can think of to have one.

Apple TV (especially the 4K one) has a faster and more fluid interface than any "smart" TV.

Apple TV (especially the 4K one) has better image quality than any app-based content from a "smart" TV. Especially when renting/buying from iTunes with 4K HDR.

Apple TV acts as a hub for your homekit devices.

Apple TV 4K has a pretty powerful SoC (it's even actively cooled!), on par with last gen consoles, so it plays actual games and works with certain controllers.

"smart" TV apps and OS's rarely get updates, and they are often riddled with security holes.

Apple TV devices have stuff like iCloud integration, iTunes stores, and Airplay, so it's great for people in the Apple ecosystem.

Also, a lot of people have monitors/TV's that don't (luckily) have any "smart" gimmicks, so Apple TV is an excellent solution for them.

IMO, a TV should just offer the best possible image quality + input ports and nothing else. All that "smart" shit is a massive gimmick

God I wish there was a TV with TV OS built in. The box itself is so pointless, but the operating system is far beyond what other TVs offer.

Do TV apps these days allow you a universal search for all your services or do you still have to go into each one individually?

I understand if you don't have an app on your Smart TV that you use (like YouTube TV) then you would need a streaming box...but my point was in my case with my LG I do have YouTube TV, Netflix, Amazon, Sling, Vudu, FandangoNow etc (seems like most of the major ones)...what would the ATV or another box offer me was my question...iTunes sounds better then Vudu so that's one major plus but having a million other apps doesn't necessarily make the box better...that's like saying I have 500 cable channels even though you probably only watch a small percentage of them...

It's not that the apps aren't available on the television, but in my case the apps on my Samsung (a KS9800) tend to not work very well. For instance, almost a year after getting the television, there was a longstanding bug in the Samsung OS that wouldn't see me as logged in and offered no access to a login screen, effectively locking me out of authenticating Netflix, Hulu, etc. I was forced to stream video through my PS4 Pro until Samsung sorted it out. With some apps, the usability was different depending on device...some apps on my FireTV in the bedroom allowed smooth scrubbing with the remote, but the PS4 version might require you to select an onscreen fast-forward button which was tricky to control. The ATV apps all use Apple's video API so scrubbing video is consistent in every app you're using...it's smooth & fast and you get a little preview icon of what's onscreen as you do it. It also lets you easily "snap" back to to where you started.

Like everything Apple does, there's a lot of attention to detail and user experience. If I had to list what I like most about the ATV, it would be these:

- interface is clean and easy to navigate; 4K and HDR titles are prominently advertised
- iTunes has a ton of content, often obscure things I haven't seen elsewhere
- iTunes has sales all the time; I've bought tons of movies for under $8
- if a title you own gets a 4K/HDR update, Apple upgrades yours for free
- Siri works well on the ATV; she can locate just about anything across all apps
- anything I buy I can stream on a television, or download and play on an iOS device

That being said, the 4K version had some bugs at launch that have been (mostly) stamped out. It doesn't really do anything that you can't technically do on other devices, but it's easily my favorite streaming box out of all of them.

Apropos of nothing, I LOVE the screensaver wallpapers on 2018 LG OLEDs.

The screensavers are fantastic...I actually look forward to seeing the new ones they add.

No, this doesn't make any logical sense.

Anyway, Jobs wanted to make a TV originally but decided to just make a box with tvOS in instead, that plugs in anywhere

Apple does a lot of things that don't make any sense.

It won't for sure happen but I wouldn't be surprised. It wouldn't be a volume item, but like a luxury niche item. Look at my $10k apple tv y'all (I could have gotten a much nicer OLED for an eighth of the money but look at me dammit)!

Thanks for your opinion. I doubt you have any factual evidence to back that up, unless you're gonna post that tired old meme of the magic mouse with the cable plugged underneath it.

And yet they're the most valuable company in the world and basically set nearly every major design trend for consumer electronics

Dude...it was just a joke about a TV made by Apple.

I really like webos tv overall, the apps it has are good and get updated enough, it just doesn't have every service. Some big holes in there. apple tv will have everything.

Wait, do 4k Smart TVs really not have an optical / stereo out? No way.

they do. LG TVs at least have every relevant i/o. They can pass through more than just stereo too, they support compressed formats over optical.

I think it'll be interesting when Apple launches their original programming. They have to be making an Apple TV app for third parties, right? I wonder if they'll allow us to import our iTunes purchases into our library.

I'm not denying that, but lots of apple products/decisions don't make any sense.

Crappy keyboards
No headphone jack
The Mac pro in general is outrageously overpriced
iMac 5k also outrageous
Bad gpus epidemic on MacBook pros
Beats headphones with no lightning port
Why not conform to USB standards
The airs display is like a 2005 standard
Switching to shit tier amd gpus that literally still don't really outperform a 750m. The amd 4 series they are using are like 30% slower than a 750m from 4 years earlier. Lol.
Etc.

It would not at all surprise me if they released a limited volume luxury tv is all. And yeah, it was a joke for the most part. Probably a 5-10% chance of it happening.

I also don't understand the vitriol of any apple criticism. I'm happy to criticize MS, Sony, etc of boneheaded moves as well.

Others mostly covered it but yeah... compare Apple TV to a modern smart tv that JUST HIT THE MARKET and chances are it will be very comparable and having a separate box makes no sense. But... make the same literal comparison 2-3 years later and suddenly the Apple TV has updated apps and is still running things quick and snappy, while that same 2-3 year old smart tv has a ton of outdated apps while the newest versions of the updated apps are slow and often times frustrating.

In general I would absolutely recommend having a separate STB with a good CPU and GPU connected to your tv and use that as your primary device. A good smart tv will get you by out of the box for a while, but as we likely aren't upgrading our TVs every 3-4 years I'd defintely buy a high end STB at some point and just move to that. Plus when you then switch TVs in 5-10 years your UI and apps and such stay the same no matter what brand you move to.

The built in apps on most smart TVs are garbage compared to the Roku or Apple TV versions.

I love my Apple TV 4K, got it during that awesome direct tv now deal. It's nice going on Google plus and getting community members UHD codes to put into iTunes for 4K streaming. Just got a quiet place for $3 UHD iTunes. Playing movies in 4K hdr on the movies app look the best compared to when I run them off VUDU. Plus it runs better than my 930e Apps.

Apple TV is amazing for me personally. Way better than any of the laggy built in apps built into my TV. I don't have a high end LG OLED or whatnot so it could be different on those.

People complaining about TV provider logins when you would deal with the same thing if those apps were on your TV anyways is pretty silly.

An all in one place with Netflix, HBO, all my sports apps, and even all the niche entertainment apps is convenient af. Not to mention the seamless UI and being able to use Airplay from my phone/laptop/tablet.

The only thing I hate is the Siri remote. Bring back the old remote with more hardware buttons and it would be perfect.

The TV app (to see what you can watch on your available services) and the aerial screensavers are pretty badass too.

My main issue with Smart TV apps is that they don't seem to be updated constantly after the model is a older than a year.

I can get UHD on iPlayer on PS4 Pro for example, this is not available on my TV's iPlayer.

A smart box would allow the latest versions of apps to be used at all times.

This. My cable box has apps that don't work half the fucking time. Quicker and simpler to just use the apple tv and oh yea it has the 200+ movies in my iTunes library and my apple music.

My tv has android on it, and it's garbage beyond comprehension.

I love my ATV. Beautiful UI, super fast loading and responsiveness, and iTunes 4K is the best streaming quality anywhere.

It's kind of crazy how that little box can run apps like Netflix way better than a fuckin Xbox or PlayStation, yet so it is.

Apple TV exists to remind me of how it's bullshit you can't achieve the same by connecting up your iPhone or iPad.

On top of that, the quality is also generally very good.

This would be the only reason for me to go with an Apple TV 4k. I'm still on physical for UHD media, and my OLED B6 Netflix app works just fine for me.

But you can in fact buy a lightning to hdmi cable and play certain providers content and even wireless works for YouTube and other services with low security /piracy concerns.

Well tbf you can't really do that with an Android either. Although my windows tab does have a mini HDMI out but it's basically useless without a mouse.

I don't have a big library of content on iTunes, but I'd just like to put it up on my TV without an additional box, you know? Not when I know both my phone and tablet are more than technically capable.

But it's just so restrictive. What's the reason for it other than to sell you another box?

Because most people don't want to leave their phones hooked up to their TVs just to watch a show?

Not to mention a dedicated soc/gpu for native tvOS apps/games.

A dedicated remote. Access to all your media without having to flip through your phone/tablet.

It also has AirPlay if you decide to do just that.

Not everyone wants a half baked experience.

Roku Ultra>Apple TV imo, we have both due to Direct TV now. Apple TV is slightly faster, but jesus the remote is horrid.

I've found the Apple TV 4K to be amazing for cheap 4K HDR content as someone who also owns an LG C7. Without the Apple TV I would probably own 1/10th of what I own now.

It really can't be understated how cheap you can grab movies if you are willing to look around. Any digital code activated (itunes codes specifically) will give you the highest quality version of the movie available. Which means you can grab codes off ebay or anywhere else for as cheap as $2-3 and get the 4K HDR copy.

What you're talking about is the use of an iPhone or an iPad as a permanent Apple TV replacement. If you want that experience then it makes sense to buy Apple TV.

That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about a quick solution to have the same viewing options but on a rare ad-hoc basis or to have to take away on work trips etc. I don't need it plugged in all the time, I don't need a remote.

It's not beyond the wit of man to do it, but for some reason they're very anti screen projection (apart from limited content and/or restrictive Air Play connectivity) unless you get this other device.

If Smart TV apps were as well developed AND as well supported as dedicated boxes like AppleTV, fine.

My smart TV was deprecated for support by multiple apps just a few years in.

So honestly, fuck Smart TVs.

For me, everything I watch on my TV runs through my ATV4k.

  • PSvue for regular television watching
  • Infuse to stream my own movie collection from an external hard drive
  • Netflix
  • YouTube
  • iTunes movies/tv shows if I ever want to rent something

If I just used the apps on my Samsung 4k tv, I'd only be able to access crap versions of YT and Netflix.
How's Vue on the Apple TV? Did you previously run it on a PS3/PS4? I'm thinking about getting an ATV 4K for iTunes access as well as Airplay from my Macbook so if the Vue experience is comparable to a Sony console I would be able to drastically cut down my PS4 use.

There's a value to having a smart connector to your TV in that the former is cheaper and can be replaced more readily (since you're more likely to replace a set-top box than a TV). Especially when those set-top box makers have more incentive to support and update their software versus Samsung (who has three-year-old smart fridges that no longer receive updates.)

Also, given that internet-connected TVs do stuff like track everything you watch on them, I'd rather leave my screens as dumb as possible and use Apple as a bulwark for my privacy.

people usually sell their digital codes online for really cheap so that's not really a big advantage anymore...I bought Vudu UHD codes for The Matrix, Black Panther, Last Jedi on release for $6-$8 each

It's run flawless for me so far. Pic quality is fantastic. This is the only device I've run Vue on so not sure how it compares to the ps4 version.
