people usually sell their digital codes online for really cheap so that's not really a big advantage anymore...I bought Vudu UHD codes for The Matrix, Black Panther, Last Jedi on release for $6-$8
Lol the general public isn't going to go scraping third party sellers for digital codes. If it works for you then god speed, but that solution applies to about 0.5% of the potential audience.

Huh. What kind of deals?
iTunes just has really good deals in general on movies. They were selling all five Mission Impossible movies for like $25 recently (maybe still), and those all recently were upgraded to 4K HDR. That's an insane deal for 4K content.

whether the majority of the public does it or not is not the point...you can get really cheap UHD iTunes/Vudu codes for cheaper then what iTunes charges which negates one of the benefits of the ATV...most people on this forum probably get their codes from the Buy/Sell section of this site or others...

60$ Firestick with Alexa and Kodi is still my main stay. Portable as all hell, too. Def. would never be in the market for an ATV. Speaking of which, they should've just called it the iTV. Apple's naming schemes are all over the place lol

It doesn't negate a benefit, it just negates a potential benefit for you.

And I promise, the majority of people here would not buy digital codes on buy/sell. That assumes everyone is in the US, and has access to the same services (I'm in Canada where Movies Anywhere isn't a thing, and wouldn't risk buying any of those for fear of region locking).

Again, glad you found a good solution, but there exists a vast world around you that might think differently.

We got a free Apple TV 4k from the internet provider last year. It's OK I guess, but I wouldn't buy one. Lack of apps, terrible remote and not a great interface.

I just end up casting 75% of shit from the apps on my phone.

I've been happy with the apps in my Samsung Smart TV.

At some point I'm sure they won't bother updating them, but the TV is from late 2016 and has the newest versions of Netflix/Hulu/Youtube TV, which is almost all I use. When they stop maintaining them I'll get a new Roku device or use my Xbone

the sites I buy codes from specifically state which region...so you can easily find codes from Canada and elsewhere...I was hesitant at first as well but then I tried it and I've never had any issues...how much of a risk is there when you're only paying ~$7?...if people don't want to do it then so be it but stating that cheap prices on UHD movies is something exclusive to ATV is not really true

I never once said it's an exclusive feature lol

The movies bought from Apple playing back in that 4K box have better IQ. It's second only to 4K Blu-Ray.

This is true of iTunes only items, but that's only because the Apple TV is the only way to play iTunes content in 4K on a UHD TV.

If you have content that is MA compatible and ports to other services, Vudu is still at the top of the pack. And you'll get a better Vudu experience on a built-in app on the XBO than you will on an Apple TV.

ATV is a godsend if you are fully invested in the Apple ecosystem and don't look to other sources for content.

If you are not fully invested in the Apple ecosystem, buy a Roku or an Xbox One.

But you can in fact buy a lightning to hdmi cable and play certain providers content and even wireless works for YouTube and other services with low security /piracy concerns.
I got all 8 Harry Potter movies in 4K HDR for 30 bucks last December, for instance.

Whoa! My movies are spread throughout multiple ecosystems. I was so excited about what Disney /Vudu play anywhere did for my collection.

the reason is 4K itunes content. it's by far the best (price, convenience, quality) way to watch digital movies at home.

airplay is also a pretty essential feature if you ever want to get content from a mac or phone onto your TV.

beyond that, no your LG TV apps are probably fine. webOS is certainly the best TV software out there.

I read that iTunes UHD streaming is ~25 Mbps while all other streaming providers are around ~15 Mbps...is there a noticeable difference in UHD image quality between 15 and 25 Mbps?

yes, but also apple handles the encodes itself, which i think can make a bigger difference.

I don't have a big library of content on iTunes, but I'd just like to put it up on my TV without an additional box, you know? Not when I know both my phone and tablet are more than technically capable.

But it's just so restrictive. What's the reason for it other than to sell you another box?

TBH I have only used it for business and YouTube - it's not just stupid apple ecosystem stiff - it's entertainment designed by lawyers.

I have a TCL with built in Roku and a Fire TV 4k. My TV struggles at times and apps crashes vs the Fire TV 4k. The best experience I've had with DirecTV Now was on an Apple TV 4k that my friend has and I've been considering one because of it.

What model TCL? I was thinking of buying one. Would suck if the Roku is kinda shitty on it.

As an anecdotal story, at my mom's house, the TV upstairs stopped offering Netflix. The solution was just to buy a 35€ Chromecast.

Stop paying a lot for TV's with apps. Buy the same TV but without the bloatware inflatng the price. Save the money and buy a third party app solution like Apple TV and the like.

TV apps aren't available forever.

the SmartTV stuff doesn't really impact the pricing these days.

The biggest point? I'd say privacy. Cupertino is all about being upfront and asking for permission and being open; share as much or as little as you want. Don't trust the Siri Remote? you can use an Apple Remote.

Do you really trust your smart Tv with privacy? You probably shouldn't...

The built in apps on most smart TVs are garbage compared to the Roku or Apple TV versions.
Because the apps on 'smart TV's' are nearly all outdated garbage and a chore to use. The apple TV is a relatively cheap and elegant box that streamlines all that and centralizes all your entertainment.
Not on lg tvs, the WebOS is fantastic to use.
Not on my Samsung either. The apps are all updated frequently, the OS updates frequently, and it's the same app versions/UI as you get on a Roku.

Get 3 months of Direct TV and it's free. I wouldn't pay $180 for a streaming box, especially one that doesn't support HD audio passthrough. That's ridiculous.

Big reason for me is lack of lossless 5.1 audio using TVs as a source (for built-in Netflix, Hulu, etc.) And Apple 4K TV can do 5.1 LPCM.

Thinking of buying one in the UK because the range of 4K content on amazon and Netflix is so limited. Don't want to go down the 4K blu Ray route as trying to move away from physical media.

My main issue with Smart TV apps is that they don't seem to be updated constantly after the model is a older than a year.

I can get UHD on iPlayer on PS4 Pro for example, this is not available on my TV's iPlayer.

A smart box would allow the latest versions of apps to be used at all times.

What? I wish I'd known this earlier for the World Cup. Guess I'll try this for the final and see if it works.

Every smart tv I've owned has ended up sluggish eventually. Having a fire stick or Apple TV results in apps staying updated. At least that's the point to me.

I do have a separate question about Apple TV. What's the gaming like? If I bought a few Square RPGs for example, can I play them on an Apple TV and share progress? I have not seen anything indicating that but I'm still curious as it would lead to an eventual Apple TV purchase from me if I can.

People like familiar things... so to have Apple's presence, makes people feel at ease? Dunno

The WebOS apps on my LG TV are actually pretty good and seem to be updated fairly regularly. The only notable exception that I have noticed is Twitch.

I have a 3rd gen Apple TV for stuff that will only work with Airplay but honestly I find that can be pretty fiddly at times.

It is surprising in a way how Apple was pretty early out of the gate with Airplay on Apple TV and had it pretty right early on, but since then they've conceded so much space to TV manufacturers, Amazon and Google.

I've generally believed that the killer app is being able to pick something on your phone and have it appear on your TV, having a big dumb interface on a massive screen so far away from you is just... eh.

That experience becomes a lot faster when it is just built into the TV and can interrupt whatever you're currently looking at, failing that you want something that you can just leave and forget about until you need to do something with it. I don't want another dumb remote that I'm going to misplace somewhere.

I have thought about getting a new Apple TV recently, I already pay for Apple Music and if there was some decent video content that didn't involve James Corden I would potentially contemplate upgrading.

The other point that makes me more dubious about the built in LG apps is how it is reported to just monitor absolutely everything you do, which doesn't sound great.

So I guess that's an answer? It doesn't really have aa much of a place as it did a few years ago. The competitors pushed into a cheaper line of products that seemed to do most of the things people wanted, whilst Apple... made everything more expensive and added some games?
