I didn't know Blue Dragon had a job system, only played it for an hour or so. I should go back to it

Yeah, there are 9 jobs (shadows) - 1 job for each spell type (Sword, Black, White, Support, Barrier), a tank job (Guardian), 2 warrior jobs (Monk, Assassin), and the Generalist job which increases how many skill slots & accessories you can equip. When you get your shadow power (very early in the game, you must have stopped right before it), you start of with access to the Sword, White, and Black shadows. At set LVs, you get to unlock an additional shadow job until everyone eventually has access to every job (unlocks are specific to different characters so you can customize each character to your liking). Equipped jobs gain XP which leads to LVs and at set LVs, they gain new skills which can be equipped (you start out with 3 skill slots and gain more via the Generalist job). Skills can be a new active ability (like being able to cast black magic) or passive boosts. All in all, it's a fun system and on the harder difficulties, things are challenging enough to make it worthwhile to dig into it.

That's neat. I will definitely play it on the harder difficulty. Had no idea there was that much depth to the combat

Yeah, Mistwalker made the xbox 360 into a great console for me. Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, what an awesome combo.

Blue Dragon didn't look as vibrant as it could have, but the Hard mode is really challenging and you have to up your game and use everything accordingly. Though its a bit too unbalanced as you can hit a brick wall. I kind of liked it, but its also very bland.

Lost Odyssey was good, probably better than FFXIII bar the gameplay and visuals but its also not as good as it could've been. I used to blame the studios Mistwalker had to deal with, Artoon and FeelPlus were B-rated and made a lot of dumpster fire. It perhaps shows the talents of Mistwalker as these RPG's are the best games these studios put out by far.

In the end, Microsoft never really delivered for me. Star Ocean 4, Eternal Sonata and the Mistwalker games didn't make me forget the Playstation consoles. Vesperia was probably the best deal out of the lot.

Of all the current 3 console manufacturers, Nintendo are the only ones actually investing on JRPGs.

Sony's Japan studios prefer to make non Japanese games like Knack instead.

MS at this stage is a lost hope.
Not exactly, they prefer to invest in projects that could become global hits.

Only Japanese focus has been esports related. New Everybody's Golf and GT Sport. But it started already on the Vita with Freedom Wars (Sinners' Festival). Old rules have changed in Japan. Mid-tier JRPGs is not what the Japanese market is requesting anymore. They want to play with friends and the Gaas model has reached Japan with big numbers. Asia is not different.

Sony has no choice to avoid JRPGs, the market outside of Japan are not buying first party JRPGs. They are rather buying worldwide projects like Bloodborne.

Knack 2 falls under the must category Layden mentioned. So would Gravity Rush 2 as well. Won't make any money for SIE but they are projects they have to invest in to bring diversity to their portfolio.

Now we know Knack is dead after Knack 2 and GR is dead after GR2. But Shawn Layden said they are trying again even if the previous project wasn't successful. What Knack team and Toyama's team do next will only time tell.

They still do. Sorta. They got absorbed into Marvelous. They still do a lot of contract work, so it's not out of the question
They are pretty much a skeleton team of feelplus and Artoon. Most of the Shadow Hearts staff from feelplus reunited with Machida and Kato

How about diversity where they also make money as well?

The issue that games like Knack appeals to no one. Certainly not Western Japanese game fans nor the Japanese gamers. Knack 1 may have sold a decent amount since there was nothing else to buy on the system at the time, but the sales of the sequel speaks for itself in terms of how much appeal the IP has.

I can guarantee you that a JRPG like with a quality standard like Xenoblade 2 on PS4 would not only cost a similar amount to Knack 2 development budget wise, but it would outsell the majority of Sony Japan's output combined. Last I checked, XB2 did over 1.3 million in a few months which is something Japan studios can even dream to achieve.

In this case, I commend Nintendo for nurturing the JRPG genre and actually growing a fanbase for it unlike Sony who prefers to piss away money and make games like Knack 2 who probably haven't even sold 100K lifetime for the sake of diversity.

I still want Cry-On. I'd also kill for Blue Dragon or The Last Story remasters on Switch.

What happened to that console Terra Battle game that Gooch promised?
