Having replayed the game recently to finish off the last speed run/no deaths achievements, I don't think it has any backtracking bloat. You open new, quicker paths to get to most areas and you rarely actually have to go back to previous areas if you don't care about stray ability cells and such that you don't necessarily need.
I wasn't necessarily referring to Ori. To me when they talk about perfecting the genre they're talking about all games that have fell short of that in some way.

First one is definitely one of my games of the generation, and with the graphical updates and more robust combat in this one (as well as that stunning animation), I think it's got every chance of topping Blind Forest.

It is weird how this is flying under the radar so much, especially since you'd think MS would push the marketing more since its exclusive offerings are kinda scant right now.

Hope this gets the love it deserves as the launch window draws in

Good luck with that now that Hollow Knight exists.

I have played both Hollow Knight and the first Ori, and HK is infinitely better in every single sense than Ori: gameplay, graphics, story, artstyle, soundtrack, sound effects, length, bosses, secrets, DLC, game design... everything.
HK is absolutely not better in every single way. It's more exploration heavy, in that it's less linear in terms of where you can explore (Instead of needing Item A to access Area A, you might be able to explore MUCH of Area A B C and D without item A, but then get stuck in each of them until you get the item that lets you advance, which is still pretty standard metroidvania, where Ori just stops you at the gate much of the time), and it has a focus on combat that Ori lacks, but Ori feels MUCH better to traverse around the environment and has fantastic tricks of movement that Hollow Knight largely doesn't rely on.

They're both the best current metroidvanias, and both are strong in different ways. Also, there's no fucking universe where HK has better graphics or OST. And the length is debatable. Hollow Knight is certainly longer, but I'm not sure that's a huge boon. It's slower to traverse, has more back tracking, and has a LOT of 'oh, I have to go all the way fucking over there?' moments. I think they're fine enough in that game, but Ori doesn't suffer from that at all. Compare: In HK if you die to a boss it might take you 5 or 10 minutes to get back, only to die again. In Ori you will have saved literally right before any challenging section, and it might take you a dozen tries to complete it, and you still did it faster than just 2 attempts at an HK boss. Of course it's shorter. Super Metroid is FAR shorter too but it's also damn near perfect.

Which dimension did I enter where Hollow Knights graphics and soundtrack are considered infinitely better than Ori and the Blind Forest... this is bait.

"You know my favourite part of a Metroidvania game?" asks Mahler. "It's when the lightbulb goes off... when you get an ability or figure something out and you can say 'ah! Yes! I know exactly where to go!"
youre-goddamn-right-gif-5.gif

Just get rid of the one hit kill, trial and error escape sections. What a chore to get through an otherwise brilliant game.
But they were fun - I mean there's several sections in Celeste that's exactly that without giving too much away, and some of the best parts of the game.

I loved all the variety in Ori, it offered a bit of everything to anyone that is a fan of platformers and metroidvanias alike, and it was a ton of fun.

Ori and Hollow Knight pushed the genre so hard that I can't even think in a world without them, can't wait for it!
Both games are really damn good but I still think Super Metroid still holds up in comparison. So I don't know if either have pushed the genre.

I will say Ori has the best escape sequences. Hollow knight is just super solid with tons of mechanics, neat bosses and platforming. Adding currency to a metroidvania game is a great addition.

But it's pretty amazing how old games still hold up extremely well. I think Super Metroid is still better than Ori, Hollow Knight might be better than Super Metroid. I don't think either is better than Prime though.

What? In what world does Hollow Knight have better graphics, artstyle, soundtrack, sound effects and story that gets you teary eyed in the first 5 minutes without saying a word. Gameplay, length, bosses, game design are just your preference because each game does it differently, so they aren't directly comparable.

Its a Microsoft published title. Why wouldn't it be?
Because Thomas has said on this very forum that their deal with Microsoft was agreed before Game Pass was a thing:

Our Ori deal was signed before GamePass was a thing, so now we're still trying to figure out with Microsoft what that actually means for us. We were heads-down on finishing all the E3 stuff in the past couple of weeks, so we just need to sit with MS and figure things out.
So it might yet be on Game Pass but it's not guaranteed. I have faith in Phil sorting out a deal that makes sense for both parties though.

So beautiful, it's incredible.

The first game was magical. I played with headphones on and the OST, and audio work is just sublime. And the art direction is stunning, so much variety as you work through the game too.

It also controlled perfectly, Ori is so fluid and responsive by design in a way that so few 2D/3D style platformers are.

Ori is in my top 5 - maybe top 3 - of the generation, and if Ori 2 is even better, then it's going to be pretty mind-blowing.

EDIT: Also I wouldn't see Thomas' comments as being arrogant. If you see him actually being interviewed, you can see that he's just incredibly passionate. He recognises and admires other great works and wants to improve on them, learn from them, make the best possible game with his team. Because it really matters to him. It's always great when we see people with that level of passion in the industry.

Hollow knight doesn't have as many lightbulb "aha! I know where to go now" moments. Partially because the map is too big and the locations aren't too memorable. So 25 hours in and I'm basically just going around and looking at map for places I haven't been to, blindly.

In the beginning there were a few with the ground shaking, it's too dark etc.. but nothing too satisfying

Whereas, especially in Metroid Prime, as soon as I got a new Power up or ability I had some sort of rough idea of where I need to go, and how this power up will be useful. Metroid Prime has the benefit of being 3d so I think environments stick more

Thank you guys for all the positivity and kind words - Always helps our team to keep pushing when they see how much excitement exists for the games we're making :)

I'm not gonna lie, I do think we're making something really special with WotW, but you folks will have to judge. We've been approaching development with he idea that we wanna make a game that'll always stand the test of time, like SMB3 did. We got the resource injection we needed from MS after we couldn't do a couple of things on Blind Forest that we really wanted to do and now it's all about just polishing it all up until there's not a single thing left that's not brilliant. Wait and see! :)

I think it can do it. Ori is absolutely brilliant, so I expect nothing less from its sequel.

The reveal of that attack was perfect in that trailer. I'm used to seeing Ori as much more of as passive character in terms of combat so to see them straight up launch a fool into the air and start juggling them with a whip/sword was awesome.
I always thought of the first Ori as a more platforming focused metroidvania.

Best of luck to them. Topping Hollow Knight will be tough, but they just might pull it off. I just finished replaying the first one again and loved it. Can't wait for the sequel.

I am confident that with the enchanced combat Ori will be a masterpiece (the first was for me , but i understand the people who preffer combat over platforming mechanics). But i have a problem with the "personality" of Ori, Sein protected and guide Ori because he was "weak" (or non violent) and it's strange see him with all this new weapons and more agressive techniques. So i expect a reason for him having all this new abilities and behaviour.

Why is the goal here to "beat" Hollow Knight?

Can there not be more than one game in the genre to enjoy? Many of you here are being utterly ridiculous.

In HK if you die to a boss it might take you 5 or 10 minutes to get back
Sorry but this is incorrect. The longest stretch from a bench to a boss will take at the most 2 minutes, and it's typically much faster. I do wish benches were sometimes a bit more generous in their placement, but 5-10m is just not true at all.

But will Thomas Mahler perfect his E3 predictions for Sony and Bloodborne 2?

Kidding, I enjoyed the first game a lot and expect the sequel to be even greater. Probably the only Xbox exclusive besides Forza Horizon that I'm really looking forward to at the moment.

If they can top Hollow Knight this will easily be my favourite game in recent times. What an absolute joy Hollow Knight was and absolutely loved the first Ori.

Looking forward to playing the definitive edition before the new game releases with my girlfriend so she can experience it too!

No one is being ridiculous. They have stated they want to perfect the genre and for many of us Hollow Knight has perfected it once. 'Beating' Hollow Knight would mean we have an absolutely spectacular game to play and we should be very excited if they can do so.

That's a bold claim. I do find it hard to believe if they intend on making it unique in each area. But then again Super Mario 3D world exists and that was fantastic.

The quote is going to rub a lot of people the wrong way. Everyone brace impact for hot takes incoming about the first Ori.
