http://money.cnn.com/2018/07/09/news/companies/starbucks-plastic-straws/index.html
The coffee company announced Monday that it will phase out plastic straws from all of its stores by 2020.

The changes will help Starbucks (SBUX) eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws per year, the company said.

Plastic straws contribute to ocean pollution and pose a danger to marine life. Some governments have begun banning them.

To eliminate straws, Starbucks is transitioning from the flat, plastic lids that require them, to ones that feature a raised lip you can drink from. The new designs have drawn comparisons to an adult "sippy cup."

Frappuccino drinks will still be served with dome lids, but with straws made from paper or compostable plastic. Coffee drinkers who prefer straws for other beverages can request the new eco-friendly versions.

So, get rid of the PLASTIC straws, but keep the PLASTIC lids... I guess they have to start somewhere.

Good. Glad they're also offering eco-friendly straws. Abandoning straws altogether would have been a shitty move.

How are you going to drink a Frappuccino without a straw? They're basically milkshakes.

Use your own cup and buy reusable straws. It's easy.

idk why these places just dont use spaghetti straws

the school I used to go to did that 4 years ago to reduce plastic waste... seemed like a good alternative

I'm surprised they haven't gone with compostable plastics earlier. Is it overly expensive on a per unit basis? I've seen compostable and degradable plastics for close to a decade and it's always shocked me it hasn't taken off.

St-Hubert are doing the same thing and heard that their action actually went up a bit after the news.

I had a nitro cold brew in the new lid design. It's actually pretty cool.

The only essential straw beverage I get at Starbucks is a classic Iced Coffee. I feel like that may be a little challenging, but we shall see.

Saving animals and not contributing to the trash swirl is cool, but they truly had me at "adult sippy cup".

Cool. We just banned plastic straws in Seattle, I'm guessing that sparked this.

Wonder how these new straws are, because I literally cannot even imagine a "paper" straw being anything other than terrible.

I don't know how this will work, but I am willing to try.

They're recyclable lids actually
Just realized the topic at hand, while phasing out the straws, is the lid being made to replace the straws. So basically, just announced recently, the lids will be recyclable, and phased in through 2020, at the same time phasing out straws and having the option for a paper/compostable straw.

What are they going to do for disabled people who need straws? I've only become aware recently that disabled people greatly need straws more so than us non-disabled folk.

Even better: Bring your own cup and use no plastic at all.

I dont go to Starbucks, but at 7/11, you get a discount for every drink if you bring your own.

Coffee.
Fountain Sodas.
Even slurpees.

These bad boys work great for cold drinks.

I hate the paper straws, they make the coffee taste off. I feel like I am getting paper with each sip. The recyclable lids with a sippy cup style is perfect. At my job they removed straws, but neglected to fix the lids on cups. It such a simple fix and I am glad it is being done.

Those cold foam drinks they've had this summer come with the lid shown in post #10, and it's fine. I've been drinking them and they don't splash out in the car or anything. They're good. In fact, I kinda prefer them.

I've heard of a few companies doing this (or having already done so) in Canada. I've wondered what we'll use instead, but haven't really done much research or read anything apart from the headlines.

I'm all for it. I sometimes use plastic straws at home to keep pop away from my teeth, but not that often. And I almost never buy drinks out, especially not ones that need straws.

The paper straws definitely aren't as good as the plastic ones, but the tradeoffs are definitely worth it for reducing plastic waste. Kind of funny to go full circle back to basically adult sippy cups but most travel coffee holders were already pretty much that.

Good on them. I'm already using my own steel and glass straws for home and travel. It's a little bit of an adjustment because I am so used to getting them with everything that it's easy to forget, but I'm getting there. Anyway, I'm doing my part to help momma earth when I can, even if it is a little sacrifice now and then. <3

Can't wait for all the disabled and special needs people to be denied straws. Real nice move there, Starbucks.
