Wearing socks in the pool? That is pretty gross and not very hygienic. If you don't want your feet scorching bring flip flops. What should the woman have done if he is breaking the rules and did not comply with her requests?
Why is it not hygienic? Are people licking his socks after the fact? I'm assuming the pool has chlorine in it. If someone wears a shirt in the pool and it sticks to their armpits is that any more hygienic? Your pits have more bacteria than your feet.

Working on that also.
You guys are something else if you really think you should call the cops over this. I'd like to think police would have better things to do then arrest a dude that's wearing socks at all pool.

Were the socks white or black
White, thank god. Only thing that saved his life.

Socks aren't any more gross than swimsuits you can't be sure have been cleaned on any of the people in the pool. Seems like if you're worried about the socks, you should be worried about every garment people are wearing, right?
Well, Generally you expect the swimwear to be somewhat clean because most people wouldn't wear nasty swimwear. Wearing socks all day in this summer heat is going to make them nasty, especially these thick type of tennis socks in sport shoes, sneakers or whatever shoe you wear.
As others said, you also are urged to shower before entering the pool.

Obviously don't profile or single out people, but generally most clothes are quite nasty in my opinion. Outside of swimwear and those plastic shoes for children.

Sidenote: Personally I don't care about the burn and wouldn't wear socks just because of that. I have worn a fresh shirt before because I was so sunburned from the day before.

Lol at people finding socks in pool gross when ppl's entire feet and bodies are likely just as dirty if not dirtier.

Not to mention ppl pissing in pools which creates the chlorine smell.

A) It's sort of a dumb thing to get hung up on in a public pool.

B) it absolutely sounds like he's trying to justify this lady's reaction.
I would imagine it depends on how far you are going to let someone go before you call the police. If he was pissing and shitting in the pool should nobody call the police to do something?

I can agree that she was overeager and racist in singling out him and calling the police on specifically him, no question there.

Wet socks are nasty and I have very little tolerance for. I mean swimming in them should be a federal offense punishable by law regardless of who's wearing them but its not law right now so why the fuck did they called the cops on him?

The more of the chlorine smell you can..smell

The more urine and other unsavory products the pool has had excreted into it

On topic though
What's wrong with flip flops

I dunno. This one seems fair to me.

They asked him to remove the socks. He didnt. They asked him to leave the pool in that case. He didnt. What else are they supposed to do to get him out of the pool?

Wearing socks in a public pool is fucking disgusting. I would absolutely have a problem swimming with someone who was wearing them.

"Several white people have faced consequences after calling the police on black people, or threatening to do so, at pools this summer."

I fucking love this sentence.

Also, there's like 13 gallons of urine in the average public pool, people saying "ew, gross, socks!" need to get some perspective.

As opposed to in your hair, mouth, eyes and skin?

I don't swim in the pool water so it's not getting in my mouth. And I have to use googles because I can't see shit without my glasses. As for skin that's what showers are for. If he's handwashing his socks that's be one thing but given he's wearing flip flops he's most likely going to wear that until he gets home while it dries and that's disgusting. (Also that shit's going to get everywhere because wet socks are disgusting in general).

I'm not even touching the racism aspect because it's more likely than not, but most pools are especially concerned with feet because of the number of vectors they can carry so I'll just say that socks and hats are not equivalent in this setting. That's why so many pools have small disinfectant pools you have to Wade through first.

How is wearing socks even remotely comparable to someone "pissing and shitting in the pool"?

No, not just for socks, for any rule breaking. Apparently other people were breaking the rules too and this black person was targeted so that's not cool.

But generally speaking, if a manager is asking you to respect the rules and you're not complying, of course they'll have to call the cops to escort you out eventually. Again though, this should apply to everyone.

Or you know, and this is the crazy part, talk to them... like a actual human being and come to an understanding. Instead of just calling the cops on someone who is trying to enjoy the pool. Asking this guy 1 time to take his socks off isn't "talking" to him btw. And it's pretty bad management imo.

I think the problem starts before they ask him. It should never have been asked

Or maybe you could read harder and realize he was singled out while others were also wearing non pool attire.

What I meant was that, when is a manager allowed to call the police on someone not following the rules? If you are the manager of a swimming pool, when is your break off for calling the police on someone (disregarding race for this hypothetical question)?

I love the "I won't talk about the racist aspect of the story" because that's basically the whole story,
again :

In an interview on Sunday, she said she felt racially targeted by the manager, whom she identified as Erica Walker. She said white people were wearing clothing other than swimsuits, such as hats or shirts, in the pool.

"It's not the issue with socks," Ms. Porter said. "If socks were not to be worn, that was very well fine. The issue was we were the only one addressed."

It's definitely racist to call the cops, but it's also a wild move to wear socks in a pool.

More concerned with order than justice.
I might've been skimming a little, but I think I only saw one post saying that calling the cops was okay in this situation.
But here's the hierarchy: don't break the rules of the establishment (even if it's "only wearing socks"), if you do prepare to get bitched at or kicked out, but if plenty of people are breaking the rules and you're the only POC in the place and the only one getting called out, then in the end you're less in the wrong than the person calling you out.

Why are you assuming that everyone cleans their swimsuits while this one guy doesn't wash his socks? For all you know it was a clean pair he threw on for the specific purpose of going to the pool? Do you not realize how dumb it is to go down this road and engage in the kind of mental gymnastics it takes to even attempt to justify any part of this stupid ass racist lady's overreaction? As opposed to just not getting bent out of shape over someone wearing socks to a public pool?

Quick, what do you think is less hygienic, socks or literal buttholes, because this pool was in contact with both

Lol do people really think most people wash their feet let alone showering before getting into a public pool..

Who cares if somebody gets in with freakin socks on. Are we pretending like there is some sort of cleanliness etiquette most kids and even adults follow before getting in?

Regardless.. Police involvement is absurd and the person appeared to be racially targeted (and expressed it in their account).

Yeah that's great. But we're not living in times where everyone is respected so who cares about some hypothetical where that's actually the case.

The mental gymnastics some of you have to do to justify these things in your brain is ... something.

Why aren't you assuming these socks are clean, tho? Like, they were probably fresh out the wash and he was like, "Imma just wear these down to the pool because that concrete is fucking hot today."

And nah, if a manager is singling me out and not addressing other people I see doing similar things? Not cool.

I mean, I probably would have left, because I'm a large black man afraid of getting shot by the cops, but I wouldn't have been happy about it. So kudos for this person for standing their ground.

Everyone's pretty much in agreement that she was being racist to single them out and escalate it to calling the cops for freakin' socks, so the only great debate left is socks in the pool.
