I would imagine it depends on how far you are going to let someone go before you call the police. If he was pissing and shitting in the pool should nobody call the police to do something?

I can agree that she was overeager and racist in singling out him and calling the police on specifically him, no question there.
pissing? no. fuck no. people piss in pools all the time.

shitting? absolutely call the cops.

Wet socks is the worst feeling in the world. Why would anyone subjugate themselves to it?!

During a conversation with the officer, the couple said, Ms. Walker offered to allow them to go to a different pool at the complex.
If not for the socks, the manager would sent the family packing for any old reasons.
Let's stop acting like socks were the issue here.

Not slipping, socks would get caught on the pavement.

They really aren't functionally the same. Pool socks/shoes have a textured surface on the bottom. Yoga socks are the same concept.
So the real concern here is that wet socks might get caught on pavement? I'm not following how this would even happen or how it would be any more dangerous than walking barefoot on wet cement, which is what the vast majority of people do.
Next you'll tell us that there is no need to shower before entering the pool, either.
Do you think most people who enter public pools shower and wash their feet before entering?

Lol just goes to show you, I mean people pee in the pool. If the lady had heard a group of drunk White people say one of them peed in the pool would the cops been called? lol no. I mean I'm sure she would have gotten out but she wouldn't have called the cops either. The socks was just too much I guess.

They really need to start putting some kind of a hefty fine or penalty for people calling 911 for situations like this. 911 isn't your insecurity hotline yo .. you're taking their time from actual possible emergencies.

Yeah no.
It's a huge problem but that would only hurt the poor more. People already hesitate to call ambulances

pissing? no. fuck no. people piss in pools all the time.

shitting? absolutely call the cops.

I think you're joking. But still no.
Who is likely to do that? Children? Elderly? Sick? Mentally ill? The only demographic more likely to get killed by the police than black males are people with mental illness.

You leave the pool and seek a non violent solution to non violent problem.

Guarantee this would happen if black/Brown people started calling 911 for every little thing.
This. Or, they'd just arrest them.

Also lol @ people breaking their spines bending over backward to try to justify the cops being called, or somehow blaming the guy. The hygiene argument is even more extra lols.

As someone who hates wet socks, I'm torn as to why this brother wanted to do that in the first place.

Maybe Becky was trying to improve his quality of life.

Why would you wear socks in the pool?
He didn't want to walk around barefoot on the hot ground. He had sandals too though which is why it's weird. Still doesn't give that lady an ounce of ground to stand on because this wasn't about the socks.

It doesn't even have to be that conscious. It's probably implicit know your place racism. I gave an order and these people are defying my social status and authority. So I'll call the violent enforcers who are on my side .

I once had a dog who burrowed into the wall and yanked the wires for the alarm system causing the cops to be called. They were less than thrilled that they had to show up. And that wasn't in a heat wave. Can't imagine them being cool with showing up to enforce clothing regulations that she wasn't even enforcing outside of this guy's socks. I don't know what the extent of the law for calling 911 for stupid reasons is but this should be within that if it's not already.

When I was younger I used to bring an extra pair incase the edges of the pool were rough. Always hated leaving the pool with the bottom of my toes raw.

With the proliferation of these stories there is a good thing to note :
No one was shot and the consequences are on the racist people.
We're making progress.

Cops doing cop-thing is a sight to see!
Always nice when it happens, but obviously the cops never should have be called in the first place.... I still find the reasoning for the socks super weird; but you don't call the police over harmlessly-weird shit...

It's as if I imagined the scores of white people swimming with shirts on in the pool...

If socks are gross, what y'all think about funky ass feet in the pool?

Amazing concern trolling about the cleanliness of swimming in a petri dish in this thread

Most of the men I know in my life including myself have some toe fungus of some kind. That's directly in the pool and all over the deck. EWWWW. Guess some people just need to stop swimming in public pools, if socks bother them that much because public pools are gross, period.

This is the norm regardless of how it may appear.
de escalating?
In the US? where you see people getting shot every day?
the same country where people teach their kids to be careful of cops like they're dingos out for their meat?

Even the fact that cops were called shows how that's not even the assumption of the general population.

lol, right? I've done actual bacterial cultures in some of these places, including a pool for a Micro project in undergrad.

Hint: It's not sterile. Never mind the socks, have some of you seen people gnarly ass toenails? Yellow, curled fucking talons hanging off their feet. That's also not even considering other things people in this thread talked about (butts, genitals, open sores, etc).

I wouldve just left the pool or something but that is indeed disgusting if the socks werent fresh. You should always shower before hopping in a pool, let alone change out of the clothes you had on. Public pools are some of the nastiest places around.

All it took was one article years ago for me to stop swimming in public pools.

Only private or VIP luxury pools with limited access.

God help those who still attend water parks

For every encounter where someone gets shit by police there are thousands of peaceful positive encounters. Those are not reported on a daily basis.

You would have gotten out if you saw somebody put their feet in the pool with their socks on? Weird line to draw considering the toes are the real problem if they have shit on them.

But yeah, if the lady was the offended by it she just should have gotten out and maybe tried to figure out where they live at worst so she could take it up with the association.

Again, the fact that cops are called on mundane shit against black people shows how the population see things differently.
The fact that anytime someone in the force try to raise an issue, they get treated worse than traitors shows that that too.
When consequences happen for cops who shoot unarmed citizens you can talk about how cops are a positive force.
It's actually a surprise when a rapist cop gets its comeuppance so let's not celebrate the police force of the US too quickly.

Well I mean I havent touched a public pool in at least 20 yrs so I dont think I'd be in this situation.

It takes a lot of work to keep even a private pool clean. And I know my city isnt doing shit with the public pools.

Please what? I don't even swim in public pools. Theres alot of shit that would make me leave. Nasty is nasty.

I swim at my Sister's public pool. There aren't many kids, but, it still feel fucking gross compared to the private pool I swim at otherwise. It feels like swimming in thick soup or something. The water is just gross.

Where did I celebrate anything? The fact that any police officer feels the need to shoot first before applying any of their training is horrifying, despicable, and something needs to be done. However, trying to paint the vast minority of deadly police encounter as the norm is absurd.
