The Huffington Post reported over the weekend that this troll attack is a counter-measure against the potential "blue wave" coming this fall, with the WalkAway hashtag intended to simulate real-world Democrats who have apparently chosen to leave the party due to its (try not to laugh) alleged intolerance and lack of civility. It's a ludicrous concept, given the galactically more egregious incivility of Trump and his Red Hats, extending back at least three years and including a deadly terrorist attack in Charlottesville, among myriad other examples.

In any case, this "hashtag has been connected to Russian bots," according to the HuffPost report:

It has ranked as the third or fourth most popular Kremlin-linked hashtag for days, according to bot tracking by the Hamilton 68 site run by the bipartisan Alliance for Securing Democracy, which keeps tabs on Russian activity on the American internet.

Arc Digital has made the same connection in the "strikingly similar" tweets pushing a "familiar narrative" of Democratic "bullying." Arc traced the campaign from a Facebook group in May and subsequent tweets whose traffic suddenly began to explode late last month.

The #WalkAway attack appears to be targeting disaffected registered Democrats who might be inclined to fall in line with an exodus from the party, a few months before a hugely important election. Sure, that's a highly specific and pretty small demographic. But, as we've seen, modern elections tend to feature too-close-for-comfort margins, swung by relatively small groups of voters. The good news, of course, is the prominence of the hashtag doesn't necessarily mean that real-life Democrats are suddenly exiting the party.

The second round of the Russian disinformation campaign has begun. Don't be a sucker for this shit. We need all the democrat votes we can get.

Can we instead repurpose it? It's obviously not going away. Just take it away from them.

Makes sense from a strategic point of view. If you're worried about a Blue Wave, try and defuse that by getting people to remain as apathetic as they were in 2016.

Does make me wonder though. If the Russians are now targeting Democrats, instead of Trump supporters, how many of THEM will fall for it?

Pre-November 2016 me: Ha! Who would ever fall for such patently transparent drek?

2018 me: *wrings hands nervously*

The origins of this could even be real, but it's very easy to take a small movement, co-opt it and substantially boost it with bots.

This seemed rather obvious.

It is pretty obvious when an anti-democrat movement shows up overnight on all the big right wing propaganda outlets. The rhetoric used on its website and videos are clearly not from liberals. "Democrats are the real fascists who hate free speech" is right out of a typical alt-right YouTube video.

Yes, the Democrats are the intolerant, discourteous party, /eyeroll

Russians didn't have very much to work with. An ignorant audience will only get you so far.

Right after GOP members visited Russia on the 4th of July. Total coincidence I'm sure.

Didn't they do the same thing with Bernie stans in 2016? The whole Bernie or nothing stuff. I do distinctively remember, that was also Russian trolls related.

Honestly, I believe people will fall for it again.

There was never evidence there was anything legitimate to #walkaway. However, it does demoralize some vulnerable potential voters and provide antagonists with a false message to amplify.
It's good that the media is reporting on it, pointing out the realities for public conversation and spreading awareness of this kind of online activity to improve social media acumen.

Well, we knew the Russians were going to come back at Democrats for midterms.

My personal experience with Republicans (my parents) after the 2016 election - they are fully backing whoever is anti-Trump. If anything, the Walk Away movement is from the Republican party to Dems.

This is what that GOP meeting in Russia was all about. Help with midterms, GOP can push to ease up on sanctions. We have already seen the start of that bullshit

Jack isn't going to do too much. Twitter's stock declined by like 9% over the fear of him banning too many accounts, and that was just him playing softball.

Twitter's metrics are a house of cards that depend on bots.

Gee, this couldn't have anything to do with the recent treasonous representatives going to Russia behind closed doors just a few months before midterms. Gee golly gosh this is a hard case to crack.

This is why it was stupid for Schummer and Pelosi to publicly criticize Waters. I'm sure they had their reasons but it legitimized this BS civilility thing the Right is trying to push.

How come the Democrats don't use Twitter bots en masse in the same fashion?

I've been playing Watch Dogs 2 (just plat'd in fact) which played with some of the same ideas, but of course it was "evil corporations" using digital footprints to influence people with whatever their own irrational fears. Crazy how a game that came out in 2016 was prescient.

The mods of r/walkaway are also mods on r/HillaryForPrison and r/TheNewRight and post on T_D.

A subtle operation.
