I think this is a really good deal for this tablet. I know Android tablets are dead and all that, but this is a damn good deal to me.

I have this tablet and I love the battery life in particular, speakers are surprisingly decent, and the screen is just the right size. It's no iPad, but then the iPad is not in the same size category either.

If you have Prime, I say, why not? Give it to a little kid if you don't want it.

Tablet is good for that price, using one right now but my brand new one had dead pixels so better cross your fingers if you order one of these

I have a Kindle Fire and it has served me fairly well. Mostly for browsing and netflix etc. Nothing too complex games wise. I'm disabled because of my back so every now and then I gotta lie down to give it a rest so having a mobile device like this is a life saver. My only point of contention with the OP is the battery life. Mine doesn't hold a charge very long anymore but that's probably my fault for leaving it plugged in all the time.

Oh one of the best things about the fire is that they're pretty rugged compared to iphones and android devices.

Ive wanted to get a kindle fire because my son with autism hogs the family iPad. However 90% of the time he watches kids stuff on YouTube and no yt on these devices is a bummer.

I watch youtube all the time on my Fire. You just have to deal with the mobile site and not an app.

How locked down are these? I used to use one of the dirt cheap ones I got for like $30 that was decent once you cracked it and loaded in the google play store, was still abit slow but useable til the the dogs broke the micro usb port.

Edit: looks like no luck rooting the HD8 yet, shame. Still might bite, 40 is pretty dang cheap and it has ab SD card slot which is great.

I believe the current ones are much faster than the ones you may have owned from a couple of years ago.

The hardware is better, but without being able to root the device and remove the bloatware it won't be a huge jump, looks like the HD7 is getting close. Hoping prime day brings a sale.

Thanks, that's a decent deal. Will probably replace my chromebook as my toilet seat reader. Great size for airplane watching/reading too for my upcoming trip.

I was given one of these earlier in the year. They're super budget but there's a lot of value there for 39.99.

My caveat emptor whenever someone is thinking about getting one of these (I wish I had listened when people told me the same shit before I got mine):

1. Amazon's app store sucks
2. These things are mostly only worthwhile if you've got Amazon Prime and are pretty invested in their ecosystem
3. After about a year of light use this thing runs like absolute dogshit

The entire UI of the thing is basically advertisement for Amazon services (there's even a shop tab that pulls recs off your browsing history). Anybody thinking this will be a good replacement to an android tablet, I'd say proceed with caution. For the dirt cheap price, if you can handle an ad splash screen every time you turn the thing on, it's absolutely worthwhile for barebones internet stuff (youtube, twitch, comics), or watching your Amazon prime videos and stuff, but if you've been using an ipad or Google Play and go to this you might be disappointed.

FloRida
mine just came in the mail, alexa works great on it. It auto goes to my alexa speaker in the other room when I ask it something. Thats a plus. the ads is literally one swipe. crazy amount of tech for $40, its skinny and looks cool with blue backplate.

It's good for lots of stuff and you can sideload normal Android apps and Google Play with a few simple steps and no soldering or brick-shenanigans. I don't know if Amazon still runs that crazy points thing for apps, but I remember you could multiply all these digital credits to get free (otherwise paid) apps.
