There's reviewers that will review it without finishing it?
Sadly, especially for RPGs.
But it's the same for people complaining that some platformers are too hard, some BTA, etc. There's several games where you should re-read reviews after playing the game, because you can often see that a reviewer didn't exactly finish it or even go really far in a game, despite acting like it.

Was it heinous for SaGa Frontier to not have singular big bad when each character also had their own personal quests and motivations as well personal enemies to fight.

Not every single RPG has to have a cohesive relationship between the entire cast against a common threat to work against. SaGa Frontier isn't the only example of this style of RPG working in this manner, either.

SaGa Frontier has unique playable characters for each chapter and some are decisive for the storyline. It's not a haphazard band of people with no connection whatsoever.

SaGa Frontier has also you playing a villain set out to kill his own brother with Blue. Red is straight up a tokusatsu show. It wasn't heinous for SaGa Frontier to not have a singular big bad, but SaGa Frontier was far more ambitious by miles. It's a daring experimental game.

Could someone transcribe this short video of a conversation between Primrose and H'aanit (in spoilers, if necessary) for me, please? I'm on farm internet and it keeps auto-correcting it to a quality where it's illegible.

P: The sheer nerve of that man!
H: Thou canst say that again
P: Consider yourself warned H'aanit. Stay well clear of self-centered men.
H: I have little experience with menfolk. Aside from my master, that is...
H: But thou has experience in abundance. Pray tellen me their ways.
P: I suppose I know a thing or two,
P: All right. There are two kinds of men in this world.
P: Those who devote themselves to their trade or calling and spare little thought to the fairer sex...
P: ...And those who have no time at all for work, but plenty for pleasure.
H: ...
H: ....if that is my choice, then I shall take neither.
P: Why H'aanit, it would seem you don't need my counsel after all.

I guess H'aanit is a friend of Artemis, if you know what I mean.

Because you'd need to do it for 8 characters separately. It's not exactly rocket science.
Sometimes focusing on one character at a time can make it easier to show their growth and development. You are judging something before actually experiencing it, you really dont know one way or the other. Why not just wait and see?

Couldn't the same be said for every long game though?

You could, but most long games aren't like Octopath in their structure. Saying you need to play to the end of a long linear JRPG and saying you need to play to the end of what is essentially a collection of short stories are very different things.

That could be said for a ton of long games. Just go back and read some reviews of games you've played and you'll see who's actually finished the game or not.

Plus it isn't a secret at times. Some reviewers would mention if they didn't finish it. I recall reading two Xenoblade 2 reviews where they didn't finish the game.

Thanks so much for the transcriptions! This game continues to impress me. Now I'm beginning to think the sub-text between Alfyn and Zeph actually was intentional—exceptionally rare for JRPGs (and any game, really) to respectfully touch on LGBT matters.

Definitely sounds like there will be something that happens mid to latter part of the game that will tell the have's from the have not's in terms of finishing the game.

Either some plot twist/story merge/something along those lines. That's the only thing I can think of that would legit tell the difference.

I said this above but, whilst it can definitely be said for most long games, saying it in regards to Octopath is definitely interesting. It's essentially saying that there's some reason why one shouldn't just give up after finishing one or two of the eight stories, and whilst that's not confirming anything it's, again, interesting.

You bet! I reviewed games for 12 years and RPGs are the worst to review, they are too long and generally, we have only two weeks to review them prior the launch date. However, there's sometimes a review guide or some notes to let you know if you don't have 50-60 hours to put in the game.

That being said, the Twitter message is quite relevant in itself; it means that this reviewer played until the end or almost and knows that the game isn't the same at the 15 hours mark and at the end. When reviewers need time to review the game accurately, you receive review code more early. I remember receiving Skyrim almost 4 weeks prior launch date.

Is the problem with H'aanit the way she speaks or something else? Haven't tried her yet.

I think the issue most have is her dialect/language (old English/Middle English).

Even as a native English speaker, it feels weird to get used to as most other characters don't have any real change in dialect.

I still find her combat very enjoyable though and playing through the 3 hour demo with her now.

Same, english is not my main language and some of what she said in that exchange was straight gibberish to me haha

And Disclaimer I know it is Middle English, I read your other thread! <3 But I really can't understand some of the things in the video you posted haha

Haha, thanks for the shoutout. <3

I don't mind if people dislike H'aanit's dialect because they find it difficult to read. Personally, I love it and think it only takes a second to parse, but everyone's different! I could especially understand if people whose first language isn't English find it trying.

Which words do you have difficulty with? Maybe we could partake in some brief lessons to make her story more enjoyable for people. :)

Yea I thought they did, atleast 90% of them
I write reviews for a small website, because we're small we don't always get review copies as early as the big boys. Persona 5 for example was an impossibility to finish in time.

I'd done like 3 dungeons I think when my review went live. Certainly enough to form an opinion, although tbh considering how long that game goes for my score would've dropped a bit if I'd waited.

Can someone detail what a sub job gives you? I can't find anything concrete on what that is despite many places already deciding what they'll do.

Now I'm just wondering how H'aanit was localized in other languages...

I enjoy her quirky dialect tho but understandable that it might be harder for some to read quickly.

H'aanit's dialogue is a bit ridiculous but it's not that big of a deal. Besides, she's insanely overpowered as she can cover damn near any weapon weakness with her Capture ability.

Ah okay. As a non native I used to find stuff like this super annoying but I've gotten used to it (precisely thanks to RPGs lol) and now I kinda enjoy learning these, provided they're not that complicated... Worst dialect quirk I've experienced is the uh scottish (?) english from some characters in Dragon Quest IV DS.

Is there anything else you get from importing a save from the prologue? I REALLY enjoyed my 3 hours but want to choose differently when the game releases.

Secondary jobs give a character a percentage bonus to relevant statistics for the job, as well as access to all of the weapons and abilities that job can use/learn (in addition to their fixed primary job). Upon learning certain numbers of abilities in a job, the character will gain access to passive skills, which they can equip four of from any job, even if they aren't in that job. That's where the majority of character customizability comes from.

To learn abilities, characters must expend JP, which is gained after fights, and each character has their own pool of it universally usable for any unlocked job. JP costs for abilities scale as you purchase them within each job. For instance, Olberic's final Warrior ability might cost 5,000 JP, but at the same time his first Apothecary ability would cost 30 JP, and his second 100 JP.

To make Olberic a really durable tank, as an example, you might make his secondary job Hunter, while purchasing abilities in Apothecary to unlock the +500 HP passive skill.

Path actions (in-combat and out) are unique to each character, and don't come with their job. Alfyn's Inquire/Concoct, Primrose's Allure/Summon, etc.

Does the amount of JP required to unlock a new skill go back to 30 with a secondary job? I hope it does since it would encourage the player to mess around with trying new builds and jobs

Not sure whether I want to see this or stay blissfully ignorant thinking that a bunch of JRPG characters were talking like they were on r/ScottishPeopleTwitter.

Doesn't look like it, they'd have mentioned it in the demo otherwise. It really only seems to be a time saving thing.

Does anyone know specifically what time Octopath will go live on the NA store? Want to play it before I hit a big flight at noon on the west coast.
