Filming on the Game of Thrones prequel will start in Belfast in October, it has been confirmed.

Staff at the Paint Hall studios in the city's Titanic Quarter have been briefed that their next major project will be a series set 1,000 years before the events of the fantasy drama.

The news is another huge boost to our growing TV and film industry, with Superman prequel series Krypton also being filmed locally and the latest spin-off in the Star Wars franchise coming here in April 2019.

As Sunday Life exclusively revealed in February, Star Wars creator George Lucas visited Northern Ireland before Christmas to seal the deal for the new standalone film.

The movie will centre on the life of Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi, with Ewan McGregor reprising the role he first played in 1999's Star Wars prequel The Phantom Menace.

The new projects will secure hundreds of jobs in the TV and film industry well into 2020.

A Paint Hall source welcomed the developments. "This is fantastic news for everyone at the studio - from the cast and the crew, right down to the riggers and the catering staff," they told Sunday Life.

Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin confirmed the prequel would have a different cast and has a working title of The Long Night.

However, the acclaimed author believes the series name will change because producers HBO "will want to work the phrase 'Game of Thrones' in there somewhere".

The original saga, filmed in Northern Ireland since 2010, has brought in millions of pounds to the local economy.

The Paint Hall was used as its main studio, while other locations that featured prominently included the famous Dark Hedges near Ballycastle, Ballintoy Harbour on the north Antrim coast, Shillanavogy Valley, near Slemish in Co Antrim, and more.

The areas are now tourist hotspots, with devotees of Game of Thrones flocking to see them in record numbers from around the world.

Last weekend, stars and celebrity fans of the series descended on Belfast's Waterfront Hall for an exclusive wrap party after the cameras stopped rolling.

Among those in attendance were stalwarts Kit Harington (left), Maisie Williams and Alfie Allen, Holywood actor Jamie Dornan and legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk. DJ Pete Tong flew in to perform at the bash.

The final series of the show will air next year, with each of its six feature-length episodes costing a staggering $15m to make.

This is gonna be amazing. The Long Night in his World of Ice and Fire book sounds amazing.

According to the legends children were born, lived and died without the winter ever ending. An entire generation of Westeros shrouded in cold and darkness.

Damn, that soon? Guess HBO wants to follow the final season of GoT with this so it has a good start.

I'm actually kinda not into it, this is Age of Heroes territory and I always figured that Martin would never expand upon that era so it retained its mythical properties. We still have no idea if Bran the Builder was a real person or several people along with many other famous "heroes" of that Era. Plus, Old Valyria still existed at this time, if I'm not mistaken, so does this mean we could also get a glimpse of them as well?

Is this not some low key Star Wars news too? We don't know anything about this stuff for the Obi Wan movie. I thought they canned it?

Wait, wait "The Long Night?" We really going there? Bran the Builder gonna show up?
Did you miss the announcement thread from a few weeks back? lol

The network has released an official description of the show's storyline, and it's another tale spread across multiple locations and clans: "Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros's history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend … it's not the story we think we know."

Wow, a lot quicker than I expected. I guess they're not even going to wait a year between S8 and the spin-off airing.

Is this source reliable? That Obi-Wan news seems to be dropped in when I thought that was canned?

Also the Long Night? I was hoping they'd go with the Dance of Dragons. Huge civil war with lots and lots of Dragons, including my favourite Sunfyre. That would be epic!

They barely include the direwolves or dragons in got. Dragon CGI is too expensive.

Maybe you're right. A show based on the Dance of Dragons civil war would cost far more than GoT, but could you imagine seeing the Battle Above The God's Eye in live action! Oh my days that would be sweet.

I would be surprised if we saw some of the more famous heroes like Brandon the Builder, Lann the Clever, Garth Greenhand or Serwyn of the mirror shield.

Super hyped for this. I bet we'll learn a lot about the lands beyond the wall, the Night King, and all that. Old Valyria would be awesome to see as well.

This is kind of surprising, I would have expected them to go for a more politics-heavy era like Dance of the Dragons or Blackfyre Rebellion, since the political intrigue seems to be a lot of people's favorite part of the show. Unless they intend to show that it was a much different time than the in-world histories depict it as.

I agree, still bummed about how much of a backseat the direwolves took in Got. Jeez.

I'm surprised it's starting this early but I guess they don't want a long holdover after the final season of GoT. I'm probably more hyped for this than I am for the final season. It should be some really fantastic material to explore

I'm expecting the Bastard Executioner V2, but I hold no grudge, take the money and run GRRM, people did ask for it.

It's basically got everything great about GOT whether it's the political intrigue or awesome battles. It's also got a clearly laid out backstory as well which decreases of the biggest issues of the current GOT where they run out of material and can't think of anything good. ASOIAF had a lot of battles but the shows don't show even half of them which could have happened with Dance where they show the most defining battles. It's of the stories that I feel would have been the best decision straight after GOT and it would be cool to see people siding between greens and blacks.

The Long Night sounds interesting.

Call me the ultimate pessimist but I get major "Caprica" vibes out of this. Don't get me wrong, I think it will be last but no way it gets to be as high as GoT was. Same thing happened with Better Call Saul vs Breaking Bad. GoT is so great because it's strong characters, great acting and amazing story (despite shit writing and bad pacing - see last season), this show will need to hit all of those to be amazing.

Their synopsis says it's not the story we know. Sounds like they can retcon it to whatever they want. Should be good.

Didn't expect them to start this soon. Awesome!

With Netflix starting to cast their Witcher series and Amazon's LOTR series due out in 2020, HBO likely didn't want to risk waiting too long for competition to come along and eat their lunch. Makes sense they'd want to have brand new ASOIAF ready to go as soon as possible since they won't be the only game in town for much longer.

The Valyrians don't show up for another 3000 years after the Long Night right? According to the series synopsis, this show takes place between 10,000 and 8,000 years before the events in Game of Thrones.

Didn't expect it so soon but I'm not complaining. Hope the writers room are either better or have more input than the previous show runners. The show dropped heavily quality wise, the more it went on.

Better Call Saul is better than BB though.

Every time I get excited for this I think about more White Walker battles and my hype deflates.

I hope they have something else to their sleeves and that the wntire conflict won't revolve singularly around incoming White Walker threats.

Doesn't sound for me. Its going to be a straight up high fantasy if they're going to that time period which I'm not sure is going to recapture what really made Game of Thrones stand out. I'm sure it will be hugely popular for namebrand alone but still, I kind of like leaving the ancient past a mystery.

Guys, this article says GEORGE LUCAS flew down LAST YEAR to seal the deal on a location for Obi-Wan.

I wouldn't trust a lick of this.

Valyria didn't exist at this point. It was the Great Empire of the Dawn that existed.

Valyria comes much after the Long Night.

Umm this source drops a huge (arguably bigger) bomb with that Obi Wan movie.

If the source is even reliable

Lucas may not be heavily involved, but they probably still ask him if he would approve of something, like a location. Doesn't sound that absurd. Especially with all the shit that went down with Solo.

I do remember being in that thread, and I'm still shocked now. We gonna get all the dirty secrets now. Who was Azor Ahai? Was Bran the builder real? Was he one person or multiple? Is he just Bran warging backwards in time with knowledge of the future? Will the Boltons be wearing the skins of their enemies? Who was Garth Greenhand and did he really live hundreds of years screwing everything in sight? Who were the Casterlys and how did Lann the Clever swindle them out of Casterly Rock?
