I promise you the iPad Pro is not only faster than this, it will also have a better pen and run apps better and has a way better eco system for this type of hardware.

I don't need your promise, I use these things. Faster doesn't matter when the craziest thing you run is Youtube, tablets have been "fast" for several years, maybe not a great framerate in Fortnite but that's of little concern. The pen is slightly better which makes it all the more depressing support is pathetic, even Apple themselves do not support it in the vast majority of applications. It's not integrated like it is in windows, it's just a special input for some note taking and drawing apps. The ecosystem is terrible. I'm editing text documents in dropbox because I can't do file management, I'm emailing myself document scans I take with the camera because doing simple editing for file uploads is impossible. Removal storage for simple transferring isn't there. It's a complicated mess. You know what is good on iPad though? OneNote. I bet I can get that on a Surface.

x86 on the go for such a device isn't really a selling point imo. You can't really do much with this and if you're an individual who really needs x86 on the go for your job or whatever, you're likely not looking at budget devices. You go buy a real laptop or a Pro.

So the audience for this is like students only and seeing how almost everyone on a campus has a MacBook Pro and similar I'm not sure about that either.

It's not really cheap, it's not really capable. I think it's just shit.

Just minor FYI but if it's like other surface tablets they have a micro sd port that mounts like a standard drive. So small stock storage is less of an issue with surface devices for me unlike extended storage for iOS devices.

-edit / update-
Saw photos on engadget, it has a micro sd port on the back. So yeah, it's pretty damn simple to slap more storage in the system and not notice.

terrible spec for the price. I got my refurbished Dell latitude with 8GB RAM and 256 GB SSD on an m5 for only a little more than 400 a year ago

Which is plenty for an iPad. Windows takes up almost 30gb of storage itself. So you only would have around 28gb free on a 64gb model.

I somehow have a nuvision tab running with like half of it's internal storage available with only 32gb total available. I had to do some tweaks iirc and I always clean out the previous version taking up space.

$80 for a windows 10 1080p tab. Runs pretty snappy actually too.

Who is this product for? People who need full-fat Office on their second computer?

The value just doesn't seem to be there compared to the higher-end Chromebooks, or the iPad.

There is a minimum bezel size to work with the keyboard mechanism. It's a touch smaller than the SPro bezel by the look of things, but the overall smaller screen makes it stand out more. I'll take slightly chunkier devices if they cram in more battery personally.
Bezels are also great for artists or just holding the device too.

Bezelphobia is the weirdest thing that gets perpetually stoked despite how much bezels help when it comes to holding the device in different ways. I say this as an iPhone X owner too, I think ergonomics are slowly being compromised in favour of aesthetics and spec-dick-measuring.

People complaining about the bezel when the 4GB ram is the real deal killer. I'd rather use an iPad than this POS.

Yeah, on second look, might be better off going with the older S3 or S4 for the dollar amount.

MS stay loafin
Quoting myself here...

Apparently you just search for 'Switch out of S mode' in the windows store, and it's a free (though one way) process, at least based on the FAQ.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/4020089/windows-10-in-s-mode-faq

Though, yeah, not sure if switching out of S mode is a good idea with 4 gigs of ram. Definitely investigate that.

Could be good if all you do is basic browsing/streaming. iOS and Chrome OS still don't have nearly as good a file manager as Windows, and Windows has more programs available. Could be useful for business that need a basic Windows tablet.

Outside of that, can't really see a lot of reasons to get this over a cheap laptop.

The smaller size and lower weight is what some people are wanting out of this. If you don't care about that then yes, that is a more powerful machine for the price.

lol no. Horrible "deal" 4 GB of ram is not passable these days. Why 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity with a device that cant even run photoshop?

??

The only negative thing I've heard about the Surface Pro is the mediocre battery life.

I've had nothing but problems with the surfaces we have to service at work. Almost none of them take feature updates. Google says this is a common problem but Microsoft has no solution. out of everything we sell, they have the highest DOA and return rate. My disdain for them is immeasurable.

The i5 is the one you want to buy, too, incase people don't know. Passively cooled and silent, with better battery life. It's kind of neat you can get one with an i7 but I think the downsides far outweigh the upsides. That's a great deal.

I want one to replace my Surface 3, which this is measurably better than in every way... but the market for the 3 wasn't exactly big in the first place.

Micro center had the surface pro i5 128gb model for 699 today in store. My gf and I picked one up and a 128 card for another 34.99. This seems like a bad deal.

Expanding their market
It's their third try at this. As someone who has a Surface 3 and I think I even still have an RT kicking around somewhere (what a weird experiment THAT was), this appeals to me in ways I doubt it appeals to many. Which is sort of hilariously missing the point.

Beyond people who have already love the Surface line (all because of the Pro, basically) that want a secondary surface for using in bed or on an airplane when a smaller form factor is preferable, I don't see this taking off.

Is there a technical reason the switch out of S mode is one way, or is that Microsoft trying to make people scared of doing it because they can't go back?
