But you can't fight the friction... :(

That trailer got me hyped when I first saw it back in the stone age when I was perched atop my triceratops, but then I saw it like 10 more times, and then they made a shittier trailer and I saw that one like 10 times as well. Now I feel like I know 90% of what happens in the movie and I guess I'll catch up with the other 10% when it hits redbox.

It does not help that a lot of the action is in that trailer. I was a bit disappointed that I had seen so much of it already.

Could be worse, I saw the 1st Fallout trailer a lot since I wanna say Panther.

Over $700,000 for a release in 16 theatres seems pretty great for Sorry to Bother You, no?

https://deadline.com/2018/07/sorry-...-documentary-specialty-box-office-1202422796/

It's the 4th highest indie per-theater average of the year, and only one of those opened in more theaters (Isle of Dogs). So yeah, it's a pretty good number.

Renner is confirmed for Spawn

How is Todd doing this?

Lower upfronts, higher backends, and I think this movie is gonna be more like $10-15M than Blumhouse's usual $5-10M budget.

I fully expected Rampage to be the bigger Rock movie this year, but after the last two trailers, I think Skyscraper got it.

Kinda surprised the budget for Skyscraper is so high. At $125 million, it's more than even Rampage.

Yeah, I know. I just wanna keep poking. I do hope the legs are good.

Also MI:6 aiming for 60+ M OW.

The M:I franchise is remarkably consistent for opening weekend grosses. 3 of them are between 55 and 60 million opening weekend, with only 3 coming under 50 and Ghost Protocol having a really weird roll-out that seems like it'd be in that range were it not limited for the first week.

Skyscraper looks so silly

Saw trailers for this and The Meg before Jurassic World and am honestly kind of hoping for a drive-in double feature for pure shlok.

Yeah, it's cool they are aiming reasonable but I assume International markets change the game.

I did my part by seeing Ant-Man & The Wasp twice last weekend. I need to see it do better than Justice League.

Also, one of my theaters is playing "Sorry to Bother You." I didn't realize that was a limited release. May need to go see that now.

Renner is confirmed for Spawn

How is Todd doing this?

Word was Todd is funding the majority of this film himself.

If he was having trouble securing a studio (or any meaningful distribution) then perhaps he feels like he needs some 'star power' to get STX or Lionsgate onboard never mind Universal or a Sony.

Of course bringing onboard Renner means putting his hand deeper in his pocket. If Todd thinks this could spawn a new cineverse I think he's going to be sorely disappointed and many millions of dollars lighter.

I was hoping for a WSJ (or even better a Ben Fritz) take on this before posting this but aside from a Nikkei article that is less relevant for this thread only THR is on it for now:

Sony Stock Hits 10-Year High
Analysts have lauded financial momentum at the conglomerate. As Sony now earns much of its profits from entertainment, music, video games and, in Japan, financial services, investors see it as less exposed to the risks of a potential U.S.-China trade war.

With its gaming, film and music divisions forecast to provide a combined 51 percent of Sony profits for the current fiscal year ending March 2019, some have highlighted that the conglomerate has become more an entertainment than an electronics giant.

Unfortunately the article is pretty sparse in terms of analysis, so not much to read into here other than the "more an entertainment than an electronics giant".

Skyscraper seems like the kind of movie that blows up overseas.

Will probably make way more than

I hope this at least turns a profit. Todd seems like a very nice guy.

Spawn needs a Spidey counterpart, someone Spawn can go back and forth with.

Wow, haven't been paying attention to the numbers lately. Was pleasantly surprised to see Solo bombing the way it is. When they fired Lord and Miller, all my interest in it dissipated. Appears I might not be alone.

I've given up on Hearts Beat Loud opening wider. Perhaps they'd have been wiser to release it any other time of the year.

Lord Brady

Why hope a movie bombs that you haven't even seen? I can see being disinterested, but actively hoping it fails?
There's a world of difference between hoping something fails and being pleasantly surprised when it does. After they fired Lord and Miller, I stopped caring at all about the movie. Now that it bombed, my interest is renewed because it could signal a change at Lucasfilms. Or not. At least there's hope.

I honestly really doubt Lord and Miller's firing contributed in any appreciable way to the numbers specifically because they were fired. I think it's likelier that the overall image of the movie as being a production disaster throughout social media actively harmed its numbers, but as for the directors themselves, I'd really be surprised if the $83 million domestic OW and paltry, paltry international openings were in large-scale a direct reaction to L&M fans who said no.

I think Ant Man and the Wasp may be suffering from the backlash from TLJ's reception.

I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

The trillions of lifeforms who declared The Last Jedi the worst movie in the heat-life of the universe systematically ceased attending big budget cinema for fear that anything could ever hurt even half as much as The Sting of Rian Johnson.

Hoping any movie bombs for fanboy reasons is weird to me.

Maybe next time Lord and Miller won't spend somewhere around $200M on a movie that should have nowhere near that budget.

Kathleen Kennedys failure was so bad that the fans now boycott all Disney films. They took down Solo and Ant Man. Christopher Robin is next!
