Yeah. I've been using Beta for so long, I forgot I disabled the preloaded stable.

I used to be you, but we are so far into browser cycles now with 6 week updates for stable for Chrome and FireFox that I bailed back to stable a while ago. You aren't missing much, I know shit will work, and you're only like 6 weeks at most from the beta features anyways.

I've been using the stable for the last couple days. The biggest thing I noticed is the weird mobile typing glitch when you post on Reset is gone. That alone is enough for me not to go back.

This isn't exclusively a browser thing. In general I find 95% of the software I use on a daily basis mature so I don't need betas or ROMs or whatever anymore. Be it Spotify, Chrome, Office 355, Visual Studio, Android ect... I'm fine with stock.

I'm in the market for something super niche so I doubt anybody would have an answer. But I've always had a huge soft spot for flip phones, something about the way they snap open, the more comfortable feeling to hold, their pairing with phone straps, their low-res notifications on the outside. To be more precise, the higher end feature phones mostly restricted to Japan.

nJF34bs.jpg

Years back I acquired a Sharp Softbank 007SH, which seems to have been the very first Android powered flip phone released back in 2011. It was shockingly feature packed, featuring most notably waterproofing, a screen that can swivel 180 degrees and close for a modern Android phone look, and a glassesless 3D screen similar to the 3DS. Unfortunately it's aged like milk, featuring an outdated version of Android you'd be hard pressed to find versions of Apps that support it anymore, and a boot time of nearly /2 minutes/. After banging my head against a wall for a long while trying to figure out how to get mine past a sim lock, I managed to accidentally discover the key combination to boot into a recovery mode that featured a factory reset which worked.

While it isn't Android powered, the LG Lollipop phones have the coolest clamshell on any flip phone I've seen, featuring an embedded display showing animated pixel arts.

One thing I've been trying to find for the past year or so is a moderately spec'd android flip phone, specifically one that's capable of running the Gear app to sync with a Gear S3 smartwatch. Cell bands wouldn't matter as it would just be a Wifi calling phone. Unfortunately, while there is a moderately sized selection of Android flip phones at this point, there isn't many that would fill the criteria for at least 1.5GB of RAM the Gear app demands.
There's the Samsung Folder, which apparently has 1.5GB of RAM exactly, and the Samsung Folder 2, which was upgraded to 2GB, but a bit vanilla otherwise.
Then there's the high end dual screen premium models, such as Samsung's W2017 and W2018, among others, but they're impossible to find secondhand at reasonable prices.
One interesting new release is from a Chinese brand, the 'VKWorld T2 Plus', which claims to feature 3GB of RAM along with dual screens for a surprisingly affordable price. The most obvious caveat being that the inner screen isn't touchscreen.
And finally, the Gionee W909, Philips V989, etc, premium dual screens. Personally, dual screen flips don't appeal to me.

Then there's the Gratina KYF31 (1GB), Sharp SH-N01 (1GB), SH-01J (1GB), SH-06G (1GB), 501SH (1GB), 601SH (1GB), SHF31 (1GB), Lenovo A588T (512MB), Kyocera Torque X01 KYF33 (1GB), 501KC (1GB), Freetel Musashi (1GB), LG Ice Cream (1GB), LG Wine Smart (1GB)...
Maybe in another year or two?

Unless your willing to gamble on Asia you probably won't ever get a Western Flip phone.

I am, the lack of compatible cell bands doesn't matter as I'm looking for one to use solely as a wifi phone, but the only two on the market (at not outrageous prices) with at least 1.5GB of RAM seems to be the Samsung Folder phones, and the VKWorld T2 Plus dual screen phone.
Naturally from being mainly budget phones nowadays I imagine, most of them suffer from way outdated specs so all of them are just a bit too dated at the moment. I wonder if we'll start seeing more 2GB flip phones in the near future.

I've been doing a several hour crash course in getting to know where Android sets are at these days, still need help.

Looking for something mid-range-ish (musts <£200, Dual SIM, >1080p, MicroSD. extras: 3.5mm and OLED might be nice); any firsthand impressions on Moto Z2 Play or Honor 9 Lite or other recommendations?

Can you afford the Nokia 6 or Nokia 7?

z2play doesn't really offer much over z play. Just get that. Better battery. honor 9 lite is gonna be sluggish with that processor combined with hefty emui.

check out xiaomi too. Some good stuff these days in terms of hardware per dollar.

Unfortunately, 1st gen Z Play's seems to be significantly more expensive than the Z2 Play in the UK for whatever reason.

I'll probably consider Xiaomi next time; definitely seem like beasts for their respective prices.
Can you afford the Nokia 6 or Nokia 7?
Went to demo these and finally decided on stretching a bit for the 8.

Thanks emag, Vanillalite, Jeff ChickenDig.

Lol, I see a mention in my alert list, its like the bat signal for mid range recommendations at this point. Well, at sub 200£(good lord not even euros), the only OLED is from Samsung Evertything else though totally. Just as a heads up as well, since dual sim seems to ba requirement, its going to be a bit hard to find a phone with dual sim and separate draw for Micro SD, most mid rangers usually are hybirds. What this means is that you'll have dual sims, but no Micro SD. If having dual sim AND micro SD is a must, than your best bet would be a J Series phone from Samsung, as they offer that option. A series too, but its a bit more pricier, so you might have to end up with a 4.7inch screen. Just be warned that preformance is nothing special going that route.

Yeah, I found the S4 Duos for about £175 four years ago and, looking at emags link, realise I was probably expecting too much for the budget and had to concede for some things; underestimated how lucky I was back then and also how far they've come tech wise nowadays; and lament the almost total extinction of removable batteries.

But that's that I guess.

Upped the budget a little and went with a refurb'd Nokia 8 in the end -- can probably just use my current Micro SD to transfer files and stuff. :p

Nokia 8 is a superb choice in the long run, yeah. Basically an Android One flagship now, you have at least till 2020 for security patches, Android P is a certainty and maybe even Q, and in general its great value for money even with its bezels. Its sub 400 Euros in general here new not refurbed, which in any case is ludicrous for a SD835 phone. Considering one in a couple of months when I give my mom the Redmi 5 us I currently own.

Anyone with the s9 plus that can tell me how the edge stuff is, compared to edge 7? I always struggled with the edges being too sensitive for me, and I would while holding it do stuff I didn't try to. Has this improved on S9? I never see many mention this, but for me it was really an issue.

Right now I am considering S9 Plus, P20 Pro and the LGG7.

The curves are much more subtle in the s8 I own, I don't have hardly any issues even with the phone naked, but none at all with any case.

The S8 and 9 are a lot less curvy than the previous generation of Edge models. Samsung also released an app that let's you calibrate the sensitivity on the edges as part of their Good Lock 2018 app suite.

Thanks. I think that settles it for me, as it really was the only big annoyance I had with S7 edge.

getting this popup a lot the last 2 days. my note 8 is pretty toasty too on idle.

Think its related to the recent good lock 2018 update. Uninstalling that app solved that issue.

I have seen a lot of "movement" by the essential phone's team lately

Is the essential phone 2 confirmed to be canceled or there is some hopes??

Man the flip phone talk in this thread just makes me sad. I loved flip phones, and my favorite was definitely my Blackberry Style. Great full qwerty keyboard and was overall a really solid smartphone for the time. I'd probably still use it today if I could connect it to my carrier (it only came out as CDMA-only and my carrier dropped CDMA a long time ago).

I'd kill for an Android flip phone. That LG patent that has a folding screen seems like the closest thing to it we'd see in the modern smartphone market.

I thought they said it was cancelled a month or two ago and we're focusing on accessories. Such a shame. I love my Essential Phone.

On the topic of flip phones and my search for a >1.5GB RAM model for the Gear app, I stumbled across anarticle by someone who seems to have modded the Gear application to bypass the RAM check, allowing it to run on devices with only 1GB of RAM, which opens up tons of flip phone possibilities.
Unfortunately, none of the 1GB models offer a substantial value by comparison (most being around the same price as a Samsung Folder anyways), nor are there any fun quirky models (Shame the LG Ice Cream dropped the Lollipop's pixel display).

The only Samsung 'W' model I can even find on ebay is the ancient W2013 model, at a humorous price of and whose only firmware seems to be stuck at 4.0.4, short of the 4.3 required of the gear app!

Fam, I know we've been through this a while, but I still haven't found the perfect messaging app (most of my friends are on iPhone). Like the stock messages from Android is okay, and better now that it has a web client, but no e2e kinda is shitty .I know the argument that anyone who cares about e2e already has it, but when are we going to get that superior iMessages like app. Why can't they get their shit together .

When is the Pixel 2 going to go on sale? Was going to hold out for the Pixel 3 but my phone is on it's last legs.

To piggy back off this, I'm also in the market for a new phone. My HTC One M9 is starting to show its age and I'm about ready to upgrade soon. Pixel 2 XL and the Galaxy S9 are the ones I have my sights on. But the Pixel 3 is also about to be announced. Ah, decisions decisions. :/

I think if the Pixel 2 XL sees a price drop I might lean towards that only because of DAT camera. But boy, giving up that headphone jack is going to hurt.

Pixel 3 will be shown in October and the next Galaxy S in February. I would wait until next year to see what the new Galaxy is like. That's what I'm doing.

Damn it..

Based based on the current rumors the S10 is going to have everything else that I want...

Triple camera with one super wide angle lens. If the telephoto lens improves and gives me a longer zoom, that's exactly what I'm looking for. The other feature would be the in screen finger print scanner. I would just prefer it on the front because I'm holding my screen face up a lot at my office desk.

Then there's obviously other potential improvements with battery life.

My only concerns is that Android P's changes messes up the progress that Samsung has made with with their software. There's actually very useful additions they have added and there's no lag. Also, it could be the year that they remove the headphone jack or even worse, add some type of notch if they give in (I don't see why they would need to).

This all ridiculous though, because S9+ has been nearly flawless for me, lol.

Android and AirPods. How well does it work?

I need new wireless earbuds (read: no in-ears, no over-ears) and the AirPods are basically the only quality option left. Has anyone tried it with an Android phone and how well does the pairing work? I know it's not as good as with an iPhone but I have to reboot my current Philips every time it loses the connection to my phone (i.e. walking too far away). Can I expect it to be better with the AirPods?

Who here would prefer a single super huge sensor a la P20 Pro (but well calibrated) in the next batch of phones instead of a dual or triple camera?

A shame about the XZ2 Premium coming out so relatively late. It would've been a great addition to their lineup if it came out with the XZ2/XZ2c, but we're now only 2 months away from the likely reveal of the XZ3 which will probably have either the same or improved version of the camera in the XZ2 Premium.

It would be nice if the rumors of an anniversary device were true and they went for something special, but who knows at this point.

EDIT.

Damn, in terms of low light video capabilities the XZ2 Premium shits on all the other top phones:

In terms of low light photos the XZ2 Premium easily holds its own against all others with only the P20 Pro coming out ahead in a lot of instances

Sony are definitely on to something with this new camera tech, I just hope they're quick to improve upon it in upcoming models.

Is anyone with Android P having problems with casting youtube? It isnt showing the cast button anymore for me on my Pixel (I cast to a PS4). Already restarted both devices and the problem is still there. I can still cast spotify to my chromecast audio, google home and PS4....
