If true, it's really disappointing but not terribly surprising. I've been with The Sims since day 1 but as smoothly as TS4 runs it just doesn't hold my attention as much.

I wouldn't mind EA focusing on a mobile version of The Sims, even if I would never play it, if that didn't mean killing off the standard PC/console edition. These layoffs seem to confirm things aren't looking too nice.

I just took a peek at the Top Grossing charts for both major app stores and.. yikes. The Sims Mobile is currently #161 in the Google Play store and nowhere to be found in the top 100 in the iOS store. Not off to a good start at all.

Well, I just hope they get around to releasing a Seasons expansion for The Sims 4. College/University would be good too. Those are the remaining ones I consider essential. After that anything would be gravy.

This entire time I've been surprised that Sims 4 is even a thing at this day and age. The series has been unapologetically PC games, which have generally fallen out of favor in the last decade or so for this particular type of game. I chalked it up to the series trucking along with enough sales due to a decently sized, very dedicated fanbase. Something this long-running is usually either extremely well known in the industry, or has had at least one giant pivot to some other format like mobile.

Completely expected, though sad, that EA is gonna shift this to be a mobile thing only, given that they'd probably think their fanbase would be far more likely to own a mobile device than to own a gaming PC.

Why? Freaking EA... I love the Sims, you can't do this!

I like my Sims on pc and moded, not gonna play the watered down mobile version.

It's so strange to watch the slow death The Sims and what remains of Maxis. They were such an institution.

Yeah I've been getting real into The Sims 4 lately and there is a University-sized hole in the experience right now. I hope they at least get that out before the end.

As an aside, speaking of Sims expansions and the changing times, do any of the expansions include actual game consoles? In the base game the sims can only play games on phones, tablets and PC, which is the weirdest sign of the times reflected in The Sims.

I LOVED playing The Sims growing up. The Makin Magic theme song was even recently stuck in my head for some reason.

The Sims 4 is nowhere near as fun as the old games were. I just can't get into it, even with some of the expansions.

I would love for someone like Frontier to tackle this style of game one day.

It's really sad how badly EA seems to have mismanaged the Sims. It has (or had) so many things going for it; A massive, solid fanbase and community, an extremely creative studio behind it, no direct competition whatsoever, an insane potential for post release monetization with expansions and stuff packs, no rush to release sequels... All they had to do was nurture it and let it grow organically but instead they got greedy and fucked it up.

I'm honestly amazed that the Sims is in need of budget cuts. That game seems pretty much ideal for the current market.

What's so bad about the sims 4? I've loved all the previous ones (even liked the sims 3 and sims 3 pets console versions) and I've had Sims 4 on my To Buy list for a while. I've not actually looked into what it's like, I just kind of assumed it would be good.

Yeah I've been getting real into The Sims 4 lately and there is a University-sized hole in the experience right now. I hope they at least get that out before the end.

I remember when they first added the University expansion to The Sims 2 and how much it changed the game, adding new experiences and depth. It was a bit odd in the base game how sims would go from teens to adults with a 9-5 job right away and it really did fill that gap well. It really is a necessary expansion.

What's so bad about the sims 4?

The base game shipped missing features that most of the base games in the series had from the start (notably landscaping, pools, customizable neighborhoods). Every lot is flat with no hills. They've added some of this back with free content patches but there's pretty much no chance that landscaping/hills/etc. or anything close to Create-A-World will be added in. It also lacked the completely open world of The Sims 3 and its Create-A-Style mode (though it's understandable given TS3's performance why they might omit those).

Edit: Forgot to answer this:
do any of the expansions include actual game consoles?

Yes, the City Living expansion adds two game consoles. You just plop them down near a TV.

I only have the PS4 version of Sims 4, but my sims have always had consoles (and VR machines)

An update....kinda...

http://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/939298/a-quick-simguru-update/p1
Hey all, I know many of you in the community have been hungry for an update. I want to offer the extent of what I can say currently, to help put some of you at ease in this quieter period of time.

I think the last official news you've seen about what's on the horizon was regarding EA Play in June, where the next Sims 4 experience will be on-hand and playable. It's important to reaffirm that this still holds true. Members of the Sims 4 Console and Sims Mobile teams have already confirmed that they'll be attending… let me add to that and say that yes, members of The Sims 4 PC team will be at EA Play as well (sorry, that doesn't include me this year!) Rest assured that The Sims on PC is doing very well, continues to be a top priority within Maxis, and it isn't going anywhere.

So… you might be wondering why I'm sharing this, and why now? Murmurs of the SimGurus on the PC team being quieter than normal haven't fallen on deaf ears. Those of you active in online Sims' communities likely know that SimGuruDrake, our former PC community manager, chose to leave and pursue other opportunities recently. As game developers, we're given a ton of freedom to go out and discuss many aspects of our jobs and The Sims from our personal point of view. Because of that, it's important that we have someone in our CM role to help look out for us devs, and moderate tough discussions. They're also on the frontline of sharing official statements from the studio. In light of that, us SimGurus on the PC team have been asked to exercise additional careful judgment in what we say until that CM role is filled.

Yesterday, we had a studio wide meeting (nothing unusual, just something we do every few months so our studio leadership has a chance to speak with us all as a group.) Being someone that tries to stay active and involved with this Sims community, I raised a question about how we haven't been as forthcoming recently without a CM to mediate public discussions, and how that's resulted in general unrest amongst you. What was expressed to me was that, while we aren't going to discuss or refute rumors and speculation point for point (which I'd really suggest approaching with a healthy dose of skepticism), it's totally fine to reiterate publicly shared info that yes, The Sims 4 continues to be a genuine success, and there's plenty to look forward to on the PC in the future.

So, that's what I'm here doing… This isn't intended to be me speaking on behalf of the studio, it's just sharing my perspective on how things currently stand. I don't assume to speak collectively for the group, but I know many of us who volunteer to be SimGurus want to reach out when we see your concerns. Hopefully you'll understand if this post doesn't lead to me answering a bunch of topical questions; it wouldn't be appropriate for someone in my role to do so. Here's looking forward to us hiring a CM for this PC community so that everyone gets comfy chatting again!

My fianceé loves The Sims, but she's hugely dissapointed in Sims 4 and where they're taking the franchise. I really think there's an opportunity for someone to step in with an independent take on The Sims, and do what EA isn't. Essentially a Cities: Skylines or Stardew Valley situation, where an indie take on a franchise takes over the reigns as the actual franchise itself falls apart.

I hadn't thought of that before but you're absolutely right. There's big money to be made.

I sort of understand the 'gamer hate' aimed at EA... they still produce some pretty good games though... but the hatred towards Ubisoft baffles me, and the recent hatred I'm seeing towards Bethesda is just ludicrous.

EA, I think, is just less transparent in being, first and foremost, a business that's meant to make money. Other students=udios are a lot better at hiding that.

I don't know what you have seen about Bethesda, but I can understand the hate regards dumbing down Fallout. I still can't believe how they killed the dialogue system.

A very large amount of words to say so little. And I love how they have to drive home that The Sims 4 is a success.

To be fair a lot of people seem to think it was a colossal failure and express that whenever there's any kind of announcement regarding the game.

I'm sure it didn't meet overall goals, but when I go online I still see that 80k are on during a random weekday afternoon. Not many games can say that.

This fucking sucks. I have a long history and memories of the sims series owning every main one from the first one and now its gonna probably hit the grave... I shouldn't be surprised seeing how they handled simcity but I can only pray that some team with the talent can pull off "cities skyline" version of the sims

This thread's from April, The Sims ain't going nowhere for at least three years as per latest reports on how much content they have in the works. It's just the usual doomsaying because EA isn't particularly known for its fair and just treatment of devs and old, beloved franchises, mixed in with misconceptions about Sims selling really poorly now or something.

I know it wasn't a colossal failure saleswise. However, the game's success is relative. For a Sims game, it's evident it didn't do very well. For any other game, it did pretty well (especially considering it's initial limited platform availability). Them reiterating the success of the game is just amusing, as we can clearly tell what kind of success we are looking at.

Treatment of devs where they have plenty of benefits, a good place to work and a great salary? What you're saying is a concept of things that happened 10 years ago.

Actually, despite the botched launch...(two years ago the "5M" badge indicated 5 million base game sales which I believe wasn't that far behind the numbers 1 & 2 did on PC, and then this one featuring "10M" was posted and then deleted just last month)

This game had legs, and the free updates adding what people complained about surely helped. So even for a Sims game, it made it up there.

I should've really said "studios". I know they're a good place to work at, but they have a history of studio closures and layoffs after a game underperforms. There's a reason it's a meme.
