Aaron Ehasz means this might not suck like Legend of Korra. Shame the principal cast only has one girl but hopefully the cast expands like Avatar: The Last Airbender. I need more awesome girls like Katara and Toph.

The middle character has what looks like an afro... could there be an actual black character in this?
Lol. Its not the 50s. Having a prominent black role isn't something that wpuld be hard to believe or shocking

What up with the Korra defense squad?

Ya'll really put that rushed hack job on par with Airbender?

It had its moments, but it was largely junk.

Anywho, I'm interested in giving this a shot. Thanks for the clarification on the showrunner, all.

I'd like to see them have longer episodes. I feel the 20 minutes limit of Korra was limiting it a lot. Of course, longer episodes mean fewer episodes, or a larger budget and thus higher financial risk. Still, I feel it would help the story telling a lot.

@Thread: I feel Korra had it's flaws, but underneath a bit of grime it was a pure gem. Loved the ending

My general opinion on Korra is that, aside from season 3 which was legitimately fantastic, it was decent enough but also sort of the definition of missed potential. Calling it straight up bad seems like a stretch, though.

I mean, I'd agree, but the last black MC in an action animated series was... uh... Aqualad in Young Justice. And before that was... Cyborg in Teen Titans?

The point is there ain't many.

Anyhow, if the character is black, I'd love it if it was a girl. I can't think of a single female black main character in an action animated series ever.

I'm excited but I need to know how the animation is going to look.

Avatar: TLA was great in part because of it's great animation quality, which is quite a rarity these days. It reportedly cost 1 million to make one episode of that show but it shows everytime you watch it, especially vs about any other newer animated show since.

I just hope this isn't going to be like most newer animation shows that just use flash animation and take the far cheaper route for animation.

Michael B Jordan is gonna play the MC of Roosterteeth's upcoming Mecha show. But yeah not many.

I think the SDCC footage (if any) is going to be a mixed bag. I think the world is super interesting, but I have my reservations about the animation style and production.
Not from Dragon Prince. Show is Land of the Lustrous.

I haven't seein Korra or ATLA start to finish (I know, I know, what the hell am I even doing here then) but from what I have seen both those characters never really looked black to me (it's kinda difficult to judge the race of a fictional character, so your opinion may vary), though they were definetly PoC.

Granted, as a white dude I'm not really the best person to be judging the blackness of any character, lol.

I still need to see the new Voltron as well.

As a black male, I would not exactly call them black though. They are POC to be sure, but I would not think they were black people looking at them.

:O Could this be the series I've been waiting for, for the past 13 years?

Totally agreed. At this point, the animation style is my biggest concern. I hope it's more like traditional Avatar or even Voltron, and less like the new Magic School Bus.

I too have concerns about the animation style. Hopefully it's a good 2D one but the poster makes it look like it'll be one of those 2D/3D hybrids.

So...glad to see that half of this bloody thread is people shitting on Korra. Have we gotten the "it was only popular because Korra became bi" bullshit yet?

OT: This looks interesting. Here's hoping it is a great show.

Black Panther *literally* just happened. Representation is still shocking because it's still unlikely.

It is okay (and relevant) for people to not like LoK

Korra and the Water Tribes are more Inuit than black. Avatar in general is a more wuxia so it's far safer to assume everyone has Asian roots.

It is completely irrelevant in this discussion about a show made by a guy who didn't work on LoK. People really just like to mention it every turn whenever the topic of Avatar happens to be brought up literally anywhere, and it gets grating when it stops being one or two guy's hot takes and instead takes up like half the thread.

I'm curious to see more of this. Announcement kind of came out of nowhere almost, but Ehasz definitely is a name I trust very much to write a good series. Plus there's very few this kind of animated shows going on right now, so it's downright refreshing to see somebody go for a more serialized approach. Definitely interested.

The Dragon Prince, created by Aaron Ehasz (Avatar: The Last Airbender) and Justin Richmond, tells the story of "two human princes who forge an unlikely bond with the elfin assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands," according to a press release from Netflix.

Ehasz and Richmond, along with executive producer Giancarlo Volpe (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)

Black main characters in cartoons are few and far between.

How is that an afro?
What do you think a cartoon afro is supposed to look like?

Katara and Korra aren't black. The water tribe is clearly modeled after Inuits.

It is 100% relevant when because ATLA is more closely associated with LoK than it is with Aaron Ehasz (literally the first reply brings this up). Claiming that the clarification is irrelevant is disingenuous and you're only saying it because you don't want people to talk about not liking LoK.

It's also okay for people to discuss not liking LoK when ATLA comes up. It's shouldnbe taboo just because you don't like it when people do it.

When its overtaking the actual topic itself which is a show not related to either then yeah, it gets annoying real fast.

Well, way it looks to me, it's like talking about a solo album from a major artist in a supergroup. There will be a lot of discussion about their prior work and how people felt about various projects. It's kind of inevitable until the artist releases & carves out their own territory.

So we have Mike DiMartino working on his YA novel series Rebel Genius, Bryan Konietzko still working on his graphic novel, most of the Korra crew working on Voltron, and Aaron Ehasz working with Volpe on The Dragon Prince. There's also Dave Filoni doing literally hundreds of episodes of Star Wars cartoons.

I love seeing what Avatar: the Last Airbender alums are up to these days.

Like I said, the TLA team was a rock supergroup. Everywhere their members go after the split, we expect waves.
