I dont mean that they are similar in terms of career trajectory, influence, relevancy, intelligence, etc. Just that a shock jock is a shock jock, and Stern's early persona he used to get attention doesnt seem radically different to me than Etika's. I mean, you could certainly argue that some of the stuff Stern has done on his show in the past was far more harmful than anything Etika's ever done. That's not really what this thread is about either, it just seems to me that Stern isnt recognizing that YouTubers like this are just the modern evolution of what he used to do.
Hmm, I wouldn't agree. Many YouTuber's like him don't have the conversational skills or art of interviewing nor the more subtle satire. Remember, many of these people are kids or young adults who are just doing something they love. Now if all Stern did was shock and stunts, then we would be on the same page. However, that's not all he does. Not even from the beginning. In a very crowded space where deejays and radio hosts were a dime a dozen, he did what he did to get noticed, build and audience, to differentiate himself WHILE still doing smart conversation and most importantly, Robin to play off of him.
There are some YouTuber's who have that ability, but that's not what this kid is about. And that's FINE. It's just not a good comparison in my eyes.
No one thinks what Etika is doing is harmful, but neither was anything Stern did. Between the shock, there is thoughtfulness to his craft of conversation that came with studying, his internships, working on radio programs and studying communications and broadcasting.
