Laughed from beginning to end, but I think the part with the dog and the blood made me break in tears (of laughter) and pee a little.

It was far more enjoyable than I expected

Plemons was definitely MVP, was laughing every time he was on screen.

welcome, nowhere
The comedic highs were far and few between. There were some good moments, but I was expecting to be laughing constantly, while this was just a snore at some times.

I just watched the movie after seeing this thread and this how I feel about it too. It was amusing but it also dragged a lot. Still a lot better than I expected after seeing

I feel like calling this a comedy isn't quite right. It's more like a thriller that has funny characters in it. One of the cool things about the movie is the cinematography and score are played totally straight for this genre, and a lot of the second act actually works pretty well in terms of the danger/escalation going on. Meth Damon kills it, too.

Ok I watched this on my flight today, and you guys were right. Plemons killed it.

Also I was dying at the end when Rachel McAdams deadpan gasps, "oh my god that guy just died" (or whatever she said)

I actually caught this in theaters and enjoyed the hell out of it.

Was also surprised to see Sam Wier directed it.

Bumping this old ass thread but only because I wanted to make the same thread.

Easily one of my favorite recent comedies of the past few years. I saw this as a Movie Pass movie in theatres earlier this year (actually the only Movie Pass movie I saw when I was a member) and was kinda blown away by how much I enjoyed it. I think the biggest knock I can give it is maybe some pacing, but it really consistently hit for me, over and over:
  • Bateman was kinda made for this movie and he has a perfect portrayal of male sibling rivalry, with Kyle Chandler being the perfect scummy older brother.
  • McAdams is at her absolute charmiest without feeling like the Wife side character or too aloof. The entire bar sequence, she just owns it. And then her day saving "and THAT'S how you get the drop on someone!" Full of charm without being too affected.
  • Billy Magnussen is becoming one of my favorite actors. The last thing I saw him in was Ingrid Goes West and this is such a heelturn in terms for performances.
  • Sharon Horgan (who I hadn't seen since Todd Margaret) balances Magnussen without being a stick-in-the-mud. The way their relationship evolves is nothing major but a natural back-and-forth that culminates sweetly.
  • Kylie Bunbury and Lamorne Morris are a pitch perfect "together forever" couple. I honestly wasn't a fan of the continual "cheating" storyline until that amazing faux-Denzel payoff. "Stand back, baby--I'm about to burn this door down." "You're going to start a fire in a room with no windows?" "...oh, you sleep with Bill Nye the Science Guy?"
  • Jesse Plemons--don't really need to say much but fitting in such a tonally oddball character into this could have felt hamfisted but it just works.
Every character has plenty of gags and quotable lines--it's just an extremely satisfying, "complete" comedy.

Yup. It's a great movie. One of my favorites in years too.

It's on The Movie Network tonight, so I'm recording it to watch again. I watched it in theatres, then borrowed the DVD from the library, but didn't get watching all of it before having to return it.

I loved this movie! There are plenty of hilarious scenes, especially when they go to the cop's house, and also when they try to remove the bullet from the wound lol

Off the charm of them as a couple in Game night, Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams as MCU Reed and Sue Richards. I'd be ok w/ that, if Krasinski and Blunt doesn't happen.

The bullet removal scene was a fanstastic scene, it constantly throws jokes at you without feeling unnatural and the pay-off at the end of the scene is sold by McAdam's deadpan delivery

There is so much actual craft in the film that isn't just comedians riffing in a boringly staged shot. There's a style to it, there is an awareness of how film genres can play on expectations, and even just stuff like how the chases or the transitions are filmed which play on the game theme.

It's not just the usual "literally anyone could have directed this" that you see from the Apatow style comedies. This is made by people who actually care about their work.

Exactly. Tons of visual humor, great comedic timing, staging/blocking, and well-executed callbacks.

Also, I know lots of people point to the "single take" chase scene as a great action sequence, but that first fight with Kyle Chandler and the real criminals is just fantastic.

Game Night was $10 for the 4k version on vudu a couple weeks back. I bought it. Never been a big Rachel McAdams fan till this. She's so great. The whole cast is but she was the biggest surprise.

Yep. It deserves "cult classic" status in time. It's quite possibly one of the best comedies of the last ten years or so. Certainly one of the best ones I've seen.

Good airplane movie. Much better than expected. Had my whole row watching it.
