"It's very sad when Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia where we're supposed to be guarding against Russia and Germany goes out and pays billions and billions of dollars a year to Russia," Trump said before meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Wednesday morning.

"If you look at it, Germany is a captive of Russia, because they supply --- they got rid of their coal plants, got rid of their nuclear, they're getting so much of the oil and gas from Russia. I think it's something NATO has to look at."

So having a good relationship with Russia is no longer wanted?

"Having a good relationship with Russia is a good thing, not a bad thing. Only "stupid" people, or fools, would think that it is bad!"

He isn't wrong about the reliance on Russian gas clouding European policy but he is gaslighting.

It's true but why he says it is so fucking transparent.

Also, fuck Schröder. This needs to be said every time.

He's right, but his actual goal is to split the NATO members over this pipeline and military budget.

A risky play, if it's directed by Russia.

Well the situation is a bit weird there. They're energy dependent on Russia, but Russia also represents the greatest threat in terms of defence.

Germany are coming up short on their NATO commitment and it's easy for Trump to paint a picture of the US having to foot the bill while Germany spends its money on Russian gas instead

Yeah, Germany (and other EU nations) being real hypocrite here. Nord Stream 2 should been cancelled soon as we imposed sanctions to russia.

Maybe if the US was a reliable partner we would buy US gas?!

Honestly, misguided hate against Nuclear power has really fucked things over. It worked fine as a stop gap to be replaced when renewable tech is ready.

The EU is already heavily sanctioning Russia, but they are also heavily depending on russia's gas.

Almost every NATO member does.

I think the EU is well aware of its strategic vulnerability because of the reliance on Russian energy... we really don't need Trump regurgitating half-remembered factoids from his briefing to remind us.

Fucker undermined the Paris accord which was one plank of the envisioned solution to this problem.

The thing is that germnay is at least on its way being more independent from fossil fuel.

- Nuclear still has the waste Problem.
- Coal is imported.
- Gas is imported.

Its easy for someone like Trump to say something like this when the need of gasoline is the source of so many fucking wars in the middle east. Now the USA is fracking the shit out of their nature.

So tell me what the options are for Germany? Using more also imported coal that pollutes the air much more than gas? Using Nuclear and storing the waste in unsafe leaking mines?

The Russian gas is at this point the only solution to lower the CO2 output until we are independent of the Russians. We also could buy US gas, but not with Trump in control.

In the end, it's just a matter of the market. The Russians are cheap so we buy it from them. Trump would do the same with a pipeline through the Bering Sea.

It's also important to note that we're in a two-way street with Russia; yes, we really need their energy but Putin's kleptocracy can't maintain a decent (as in: citizens won't revolt) standard of living without their biggest customer to the west.

We're locked in with each other for the near future but everybody knows we have to get out of this eventually... it just takes a long while to spin up the required infrastructure and deals.

Not that it made a difference. Germany is working on reducing dependence on fossile energy by increasing renewable production. We can credit our government for that, rather economic considerations and at least not actively killing renewable energy production..

You could propose a area where we dump the waster afterwards. Since the alps are out of the question since the idiots in bavaria want nuclear energy but dont want to dump it in the area where it makes sense because its bavaria, this will get a bit difficult.

In a sane world, we would have built a joint international underground repository but, ya know, people be crazy

This is the only time Trump has actually had a sliver of common sense. Nord Stream 2 is a huge mistake. Russia already has the pipelines in place to deliver the gas etc. to the EU. Nord Stream 2 exists to cut eastern Europe out of the equation as far as piping gas etc. In particular removing Ukraine from the equation is a large part of it. Russia wants to be able to have the two pipelines for maximum leverage.

No. 3 seconds of googling yields this: https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/pet_move_impcus_a2_nus_ep00_im0_mbbl_m.htm

At the same time Saudi Arabia is not a threat to America or at least not in the same way Russia is to EU countries.
Ah, ok. Thanks. I'm only proficient at 2 second-googling, as it turns out.

But I still don't think that pumping more money into NATO and military is solving the problem. We should've invested into nuclear energy instead but Merkel wanted to cash in (politically) on Fukushima... (for which I am still pissed at her).
