Y'all hating right away but look at it all rusty and shit. It's old as hell and a lot of people might just see it as a historical souvenir and not dangerous. Also she declared it. This isn't as dumb as people are making it out to be.
I mean, I'm pretty sure that's precisely what she thought it was. According to other news reports, she actually cleaned it in her hotel room so her suitcase wouldn't get dirty.

But that begs the question, what did she think it was? The shape should be enough of a hint.

They still find these shits in central Vienna, they have to evacuate the area and detonate them safely. Can't believe someone would be stupid enough to bring it to the airport.

She transported that from Dachstein to Vienna? How freaking stupid can one person be. Like seriously. Imagine the custom officers faces. Now I can't stop laughing.

and it's an American tourist who might not know anything about this stuff. If someone showed me that and said it was an unexploded shell I wouldn't know what to think but apparently peoplr are saying in here they are dangerous. She might not have had that information.
Her ignorance to the fact that you don't fucking carry around an unexploded shell - with the intention to bring it aboard a god damn plane at that - doesn't preclude her from being a dumb ass. She's American yeah? So she would be versed in all the limitations that TSA places on stuff you can bring onto a plane. Where does she think the TSA would rank unexploded WWII shells on their list? She's a dummy.

Unexploded military ordinance was one of my major fears when I was traveling in Europe.

There's a lot of stuff still hidden, because it's not like anyone marked the locations of this stuff.
Yeah, today alone I had to dodge 3 exploding shells and clean up after a couple of mines.

What the hell sort of gun would fire a bullet that big?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/120_mm_M1_gun

That one fires rounds twice as long as the one in OP

I haven't thought about it much but I wouldn't have assumed that every type of large round was explosive. I'm not saying I would have done the same thing, I'd never bring something like that near an airport. I have some awareness of unexploded ww2 ordinance, but I don't think it's crazy for her to believe it wasn't dangerous. Especially if she didn't dig it up and instead bought it from someone.

Remember for a moment that Europe is where all those terror attacks happen that y'all like to talk about so much from the other side of the planet.
To say that this is the epitome of (white) privilege would be a serious understatement.

And yes, everybody living in a former 20th century (and beyond) war theater knows that there are still live bombs / mines around. Like, jesus fucking christ.

I can just imagine the customs officer's face going cold stiff as he/she laid eyes on this thing.

I was thinking to myself this story was so absurd it's almost The Onion tier and quite hard to believe it's real, then I read some of the posts in this thread.

Now I'm just sad.

Please look up how many shells get exploded or removed from the ground each year in Europe. I am sure it will surprise you.

On its own it would be a pretty cool souvenir, but good lord at least read up on how to tell they are deactivated. Usually they have a series of holes drilled into them and have the basting cap removed. Lady was playing with people's lives walking around with that.

When something gets rust on it, it will no longer do the thing it was made to do.

I will not be accepting corrections on this.

lol poor girl, you all need to calm the fuck down.

Its not like she was sneaking into the plane. At least she was smart enough to declare it at customs. Not eveyone knows that it could still go off.

You're right, it's actually dumber.

It's hard to adequately describe how oblivious someone must be to think that carrying an actual goddamn bomb onto a plane is a good idea.

Reasons why this isn't stupid:
  • It was all rusted.
  • She's American, and Americans can't be blamed for putting lives in danger through ignorance.
  • Nobody told her it was dangerous.
  • It might have been just solid metal inside.
  • It might have been an enormous expended bullet.
  • She declared it to customs at the airport, and that's exactly the right place to take rusted military ordnance you know nothing about.
Come on, ERA.

Even if she was ignorant of the history of unexploded shells in Europe, she's doing the typical American thing of stealing an old thing and declaring it as her own.

Europeans are pretty cool at that too but you make a point that it was illegal to declare such a thing as your own anyway. The municipality needed to be contacted first even if it was something non-lethal.

well resetera is comprised mostly of americans

If it was a brown non-american person I bet there would be no excuses at all being made for this woman and people would be salivating at calling that person a terrorist and sending to gitmo

How was I to know there was a law against bringing explosives onto a commercial aircraft?

You'd think the epiphany of "you're attempting to bring a bomb on a plane" would occur, but alas.

Yeah what could she have possibly done.

Not touched it I guess. Or asked a local about it. Or talked to the police or any authority figure about it. Or done even a quick Google search. Or exercised a modicum of common sense.

Taking it to the airport with thousands of other people and giant metal tubes of gasoline is pretty good too I guess. They're pretty laid back when it comes to strange metal objects that might be bombs.

I know most Americans don't have to deal with this but here in Europe there is still large parts of areas in France and Germany that are closed off due to ordnance from WW_1_(<-!) still laying about in the ground. We are shitfuck terrified every time someone comes across one of those shells/mines/bombs because we know from experience how dangerous they are, they are amazingly resilient from time. And it didn't help we then had another world war scale conflict on the continent that just added more on top of that. The worst Americans have to deal with is if someone finds a solid lead ball from the Civil War on a farm that slightly bends a farm rake out of shape.

I amazed at the gull of thinking you can just wander around with a bomb in your bag A) not think someone will say something, B) thinking shit won't go off
