Damn bro those games have decades of history and influence ahead of HK and have much, much more historical relevancy than HK will ever even have the chance to have.

Those games will forever be formative in ways contemporary games have nearly zero chance of replicating.
BotW took over the Zelda crown pretty quickly didn't it? Also, the majority of HK players knew the game well before the Switch release, although the new player base should definitely help solidifying its legacy as the GOAT.

it's my GOTY but hard to compare these games from a different eras. as far as modern adventure games, HK takes the cake

I like Hollow Knight but seriously this community is a bit too obsessed with it.

At this point I'm convinced those who complaing about HK's mechanics being obscure (or that a guide is needed) must be the same kind of people who get stuck at Maridia or ask why metroid can't crawl.

HK's is more straightforward with its mechanics than SM or SOTN. Remember the Noob's bridge or the wall-jump "tutorial" in Brinstar. The only thing HK doesn't explicitly explain is pogo-jumping, but that's something most people will intuitively learn.

It's a fun, absolutely gorgeous game (plus I love the soundtrack) but it does slip up a bit towards the end, having to refight bosses to get enough essence to get to the last stage of the game really felt like padding.

It's a great game, but I wouldn't say it's better than the two games listed. Or Zero Mission, the real GOAT of the genre.

Super Metroid is still the GOAT.
But Hollow Knight is a very good second.

Couldn't finish that game personally. It's kinda strange, i loved how thegame looked visually, the boss fights were kinda entertaining even if nothing special but going through the game felt like such a chore, it wasn't particulary intersting to explore and the room often felt far too wide for no reason, and ultimately one day i just couldn't get myself to launch the game again. I think it's a fine game overall despise me giving up on it but it's probably not one i'd remember fondly or claim dethroned anything.

People calling SOTN the best confound me.

I mean, I love SOTN, but let's not ignore the tons of glaring problems it has. Are we just forgetting the large number of areas that consist of "corridor + 1-2 copypasted enemies"? What about the fact that the RPG stat system is basically worthless outside the start of the game and luck mode (if you don't cheese it)?

You probably would if they were trying to stack it up against the games you grew up with and adore.
I'll have you know I painstakingly forced myself to slog through every level of Dark Souls 2 just so I could yell at people who even mentioned it in the same conversation as Dark Souls 1.

I agree, yes.

It's better than anything I've played in the Metroid or Castlevania series. Hollow Knight is the new King.

When people bring up the soundtrack as a negative... just what.

How about these two tunes evoking a melancholic atmosphere.

(double post because you can only post embedded media twice per post apparently)

Or two kickass boss tracks.

It's only a better game, if you are already a fan of metroidvanias. And there's nothing that can make it as influential as Super Metroid/SotN.

You're genuinely unable to evaluate art
Can you not do that? It's pretty insulting, and anyone could just easily throw that back at you.

The characters and animation look like they were done in flash
Sigh, no.
, while the environments mostly are dark, damp, dingy and busy.
Well, that's true, but that's what it's going for. Might as well complain that Super Metroid environments are also dark and damp, and bleak and alien.

I see where some people are feeling put off by the amount of praises heaped on the game and the need for validation

I'll hang back on hollow knight
Uh, OK. I mean, you asked...?

Proving me right about your fanbase.

Unlike you I actually play SotN every year and it's fresh in my mind, when was the last time you booted up SotN? I just got through playing it on stream just a few days ago. Hollow Knight's mechanics are far more stiff and limiting than SotN.
Your attitude is not very good yourself. You've just come into this thread to insult people who like the game and insinuate that those who like the game "shit" on the classics and insult "the fanbase".

...Also, I played SotN recently. It's still great. I think Hollow Knight is probably better since it improves on just about every aspect of SotN. *shrug*

It's possible to like HK the most and still love super metroid and sotn. I feel most stans for HK feel this way. Has there really been much shitting on super metroid and sotn in this thread?
Nope. People largely love HK because they are fans of SotN and Super Metroid.

and confuses complexity for depth
What is complex about Hollow Knight?

Naw, the raw amount of stuff and hidden stuff in SotN is staggering. Nothing will top it.
Hollow Knight has way more "crazy hidden stuff" than SotN does.

I tried so damn hard to get into this game. I wanted to love it. Heard so much good from a vocal fanbase.

Didn't click. Don't exactly know why, it's hard to articulate.

It definitely deserves to be part of the same conversation as Metroid (NES) and SotN--much more so than any other game in the genre--but I wouldn't call it "better."

As I said back when the PC version came out, Hollow Knight is so incredible in so many ways and adds so many key tweaks to the genre's long-standing conventions that the genre should now be called the "Metroidvania Knight" genre. But that's assuming subsequent games in the genre follow its lead.

I have played all three, and Super Metroid made me fall in love with the series, which Castlevania never could. I played around 20 hours of Hollow Knight and I just couldn't get into it. Although, it really is an amazing game and deserves the praise it gets.

Personally I didn't love Hollow Knight but I can appreciate the scope of it. The visuals bored me, the pacing was bad, the OST was too ambient (a common trend these days it seems), and the map system bothered me to no end.

Metroid Fusion, Circle of the Moon, and Aria of Sorrow are still my old favorites. I don't know if it counts as a metroidvania but I absolutely loved Iconoclasts, my GotY so far personally with Celeste being 2nd.

You're obviously allowed to stop, you just can't then turn around and pass judgement on the whole game among people who have 100% it.

There are tons and tons of games I've dropped because they didn't grab me, but I'd never then go into a thread started by fans of those games and argue about how the opening wasn't geared enough towards my preferences.

So their experience is no good then? Your experience as someone who loves a thing is no more valuable than someone who dropped it.

On an a related note, I played through Environmental Station Alpha not long after Hollow Knight and enjoyed that more overall. Really excellent take on the genre, and fans of Fusion will enjoy the setting. Also the post game content is insane.

It's a complete mess of a game design-wise, stealing the Super Metroid template whole but misunderstanding that design and adding all sorts of junk... but with beautiful presentation, great atmosphere and loads of content. So people for whom presentation is everything love it, people for whom heaps of content is everything (the type who loves 'loot' games) love it. It also has very simplistic combat design (grindy slash slash) with faux-complexity via multiple weapons, so it appeals to grindy dungeon crawl fans too. But if you're discerning about level design, game progression design, or combat design, it's a very weak Metroid clone.

But I can understand that. I love Wind Waker best of all 3D Zeldas (until BOTW) because for me the world building, story, lore and sense of place and character is so great. It is objectively a weaker Zelda game on a design level than the other 3D games, but those things are less important to me in a Zelda game that what WW does well.

Don't feel like Hollow Knight is much like Super Metroid at all other than being continuous world sidescrollers. Super Metroid is one of my favorite games of all time whereas I couldn't get into Hollow Knight. The moment to moment gameplay is very different.

Super Castlevania IV is better than HK but HK is better than the rest of the MetroidVania genre. SoTN and Super Metroid were fantastic but HK has them beat by a hair. When you're busting Dracula's ass at the end of Super Castlevania and your (Simon Belmont's) theme music starts blasting in the background literally gives me the chills. The most badass moment in a MetroidVania game ever, bar none.
Super Castlevania IV ain't no Metroidvania, it's a linear platformer in the style of the first game without even the branching paths of Castlevania III. I mean, it's great, no arguing there, but a "Metroidvania" is a game that in nearly all cases consists of one interconnected game-world, and paths are typically gated by requiring you to find abilities or items before you can access them. The new God of War for example is a Metroidvania

Does this game get a lot of flack for the scenario Just Being Dark Souls With Bugs? I'm not sure how much that bugs me yet but I feel it would've been a bit better if it cut lose from that a little more

Multiple endings, multiple secret bosses, tons of hidden paths and chambers and areas, tons of hidden NPC side-quests (some of which are really obscure)... SotN had some mindblowing stuff too, like the inverted castle and playing as Richter, but it still doesn't compare IMO.

PLEASE.... THIS TOPIC IS A JOKE.. we get it you love Hollow Knight a lot of people do, but its called metroidvania for a reason. those are recognizable games to everyone so its easy to understand how Hollow Knight plays. its more nostalgia then anything else. There is no throne.

yeah
I finished it yesterday, I'd say it's by every definition a Metroidvania and a rather big departure from the previous games
you can clearly see the Metroidvania influence and the inspirations taken from Souls series and cinematic narrative-driven games in the vein of The Last of Us. It's like a strange mix of elements from various games and genres that works surprisingly well

SotN has a completely different game hidden in it if you name your profile Richter. There's not many games that can come close to SotNs secrets.
SOTN has a staggering amount of content, but not all of it is quality content.

There's a lot of little hidden rooms and secrets, but a lot of the stuff you get are neat novelty items with no real use because the balance is so fucked up.

No, but my experience as someone who's fought every boss and seen every area is more valuable than some who's fought 4/30 bosses and seen 3/10 areas. Especially in a game like Hollow Knight where one of the most common criticisms even by people who love the game is that it starts slow and the combat doesn't get its wonderful complexity until you have most of the upgrades.
