Invest on gameplay and not on graphics, risk more.

More things like Dreams, I want to see new things, not the same 3D action adventure with the over the shoulder view and a forest because it's safe to rely on old mechanics improved.
They have three first party studios for those kind of games. Media Molecule, PixelOpus and Japan Studio.
I'd like to see a Sony funded AAA RPG from gorilla games.
Horizon Zero Dawn is an AAA Action-RPG from Guerrilla Games =P

Same thing I believe Microsoft needs to do again: get weird, dude.

Fund weird, new IP.
Let developers make something strange that they propose to you.
Just be weird again.

A lot of my favorite games happened because people wanted to take a thing a make it stranger than games normally are.

I mean, yeah I feel that some of Sony's big budget games do have some things in common, but not in a bad way. They're doubling down on the story and cinematic aspects of their games, and that's honestly a great thing for the medium. They seem to be learning how to tell stories with video games in a way that remedies the complaint that "video game devs don't know how to tell stories", while also keeping the gameplay engaging and fun(for others, not for me personally).

Would I love more fantasy RPGS and hack n slashes coming out of Sony's 1st party(Japanese) developers? Fuck yes, but what their blockbuster titles are focused on now is great too, albeit not for me personally.

But I'm all for some heavy action titles and JRPGS Sony, show me some love to please.

Also, I 100% mirror the comments about Sony needing an answer for Forza Horizon. The Forza series is the only reason I bought an Xbox One and a One X and I really wish Sony was scratching that racing itch. Drive Club didn't do it for me and GTS, though good, is taking a long time to get up to snuff.

Launching GT6 on PS3 after PS4 was out was seriously one of the dumbest decisions Sony made regarding that franchise.

Like you said, they are not the same. What people want them to do next gen ? Go on.
Great fun-gameplay-and-traversal-focused games (Ratchet & Clank, Spider-Man, Gravity Rush), story driven games (Uncharted, The Last of Us), brutal/violent games (Bloodborne, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima), and... Everything else. You know, Death Stranding, Everybody Golf, The Last Guardian, Déraciné...
They try a lot of things. It's good. They have a good momentum, it will continue.

I feel a lot of great things for the few next years for Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft. Lots of great exclusives that will push the competition even further. I don't like when some people here say "this is some console's war shit, why the hell would you want this to be exclusive ?!", because, yeah, that's a fight between all of them. Great exclusives -> great competition -> everyone keeps trying harder to bring us even more great games. Exclusives are GOOD, even third party ones.

Without Evolution Studios? I think those days are gone =/
I wasn't a fan of Driveclub but shutting down that studio while also letting Polyphony take forever to make one game while the competition did laps around them (intended) was a terrible decision. Forza Horizon was the sole purpose for me getting into the Xbox One ecosystem and now I have to make the decision between a launch PS5 or the next Xbox and I never thought that'd even be a decision I'd have to make.

I know I'm just one person, but this is just how it played out for me.

I don't get this either, but there's also this narrative out there that Naughty Dog games don't play well and are all about being cinematic. While I find The Last of Us and Uncharted 4 to be very strong in the gameplay department. *shrugs*

Sony should just continue what they're doing because they've been putting out a lot of great games this generation.

Fund more fighting games. More Strategy titles. More simulators. Hell fund more first person shooters. 3rd Person Action/Adventure is fine, but put some effort in other genres and stop leaving it to your third party support to fill in the gaps. If Microsoft is capable of funding and supporting one of the best fighting games of this generation for three years , why can't Sony?

I guess that's just me. I enjoyed Horizon and Second Son, and I'll be there for Tsushima, Spider-Man and TLoU2.

Personally Im glad Insomniac Spiderman is a thing. I want more high quality superhero games that arent just Arkham and Injustice, one of which left a really sour taste after the batmobile, and the other I never really liked.

But... Let's take a look at the big four from this years E3, the games that Sony have given the center stage. As I was watching their presentation, the feeling of sameness did kick in. Spider-Man is doing its own unique thing, as expected - it's a well established licensed property. As for the other three, The Last of Us Part 2 showed the player character getting around an open environment, sneaking, and stabbing/shooting enemies. Ghost of Tsushima showed the player character getting around an open environment, sneaking, and stabbing enemies. Death Stranding showed the player character getting around an open environment, sneaking, and... delivering packages? But they talked about it being an action game, so shooting and/or stabbing is probably there as well, even if it was not shown. The game that had big Game Informer coverage in the weeks leading up to E3, Days Gone, showed us the player character getting around an open environment, sneaking, and stabbing/shooting enemies. Not too long before that Sony launched God of War, a game that doesn't feature any significant amount of sneaking (to my knowledge, correct me if I'm wrong), but plenty of, yes, getting around open environments, and stabbing enemies. Their biggest success story of last year, Horizon: Zero Dawn, featured a lot of getting around open environments, sneaking, and stabbing/shooting enemies.

You could literally reduce many games nowadays to what you just did. Breath of the Wild? Large environment, sneaking, and stabbing/shooting. Skyrim? Large environment, sneaking, and stabbing/shooting. MGSV? Large environment, sneaking, and stabbing/shooting. And yet those games would never be grouped together the way Sony's games are in normal circumstances. You might say there are some similarities here or there, but those games are all unique. They all play quite differently from one another. But because TLoUPII, GoW, GoT etc. all come from the same publisher, now their unique qualities are washed away so they can just be reduced to some elements that they have in common with one another. This even happens with Naughty Dog specifically with some claiming that TLoU is just a reskin of Uncharted. Which is absolutely absurd. If they came from different studios they'd never even be compared to one another because they're so different. But because they came from the same studios you'll see people handwave away all their unique qualities just so they can reduce them to being a third person adventure game.

The reality is that if someone were to play God of War and then Horizon, there's no fucking way they could come away thinking that there are anything more than just passing similarities between them. Yet when this pops up

vlcsnap-2018-07-11-08descz.png

It seems to cause some to disregard all their differences to just widdle them down to their few similarities.

Sony is the only one out of the big three to invest in huge triple A new IPs.

Horizon, Bloodborne (Studio Japan helped), Until Dawn, Detroit etc.

Keep doing you Sony and you'll always be on top

They just need to keep giving them the freedom and support to make what they want. That's all I can ask for.

make a new parappa the rapper you dense motherfuckers

like how much does it seriously cost to make a rhythm game where the characters are 2D cutouts and the graphics are intentionally cheap? shit like tearaway gets two chances to flop but the best they can do for parappa is an upres'd psp port with the same timing issues it had 12 years ago? fuck off sony

This. I need more rapping dogs. I'd also like to see more Sly Cooper

Which only emphasizes how sad the current video-game landscape is, despite indie evangelists pretending otherwise.

Can't speak for MGS5, but BotW and Skyrim are totally compared. As for the "large environment, sneaking, and stabbing/shooting" part, BotW doesn't actually contain a lot of combat (the same can't be said for most Sony franchises discussed here), and regarding sneaking in a Bethsoft game ... *ahem*

The only issue with Naughty Dog games is the level design being very linear and simple. Gameplay itself is great and calling it bad is just false.

They seem to be fixing it if Uncharted dlc is anything to go by

It comes up all the time that some people feel Sony's major titles all feel and look the same (NOTE: I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS AT ALL), so my question is what sort of games does everyone want to see them produce next gen? Are there certain IP's you'd like to see return to diversify the lineup? Different genres that you feel specific studios would excel at?

I know Shawn Layden stated that as a platform holder they don't want to step on the toes of a lot of the 3rd parties out there by competing with them, and I agree it's a great strategy to fill in the gaps with their own content. So what gaps are the 3rd parties leaving that Sony can fill?

I wouldn't mind some fun racing games. I never played Motorstorm on PS3 but something like that on next gen could be absolutely amazing. I'd also like to see some more platformers from Sony. They've got a decent selection already, but I think they could build something truly special given their talent. Maybe less Knack and more Astro Bot, just give it a decent budget and throw some manpower behind it.

That said, I also hope Sony keeps doing exactly what they're doing now. Truly epic single player games with no microtransaction bullshit is probably going to be even more scarce come next gen and I hope Sony pushes that even harder.
Yes. Motorstorm needs to be brought back. Or any other arcade racer.

They need to have at least one big FPS franchise. Shawn is a 100% wrong. he cant worry about stepping on anyone's shoes. If Sony had done that last gen, we wouldnt have gotten Killzone and Resistance because well we already had CoD and Battlefield. We would have never gotten Uncharted because there was already tomb raider. we wouldnt have gotten tlou because well there were a million zombie games out at the time. We would have never gotten Bloodborne because From was already making souls games. Should he cancel Ghost of Tshushima now that From is working on a samurai game as well? its just an incredibly stupid way to look at things. Cant believe a first party exec would say that with a straight face.

They tried to do an RPG with Horizon, but lets face it, it's more of an action adventure game. Now with Bethesda and Bioware making online coop shooters instead of RPGs, it's time for Sony to jump in and make a true RPG. Dont have that new San Diego studio make another Uncharted game. We have had 6 in the last 11 years. Time to move on. Dont fall into the same trap MS fell into with Halo, Gears. Only Nintendo can get away with making Mario and Zelda every gen. Go out and try new games and more specifically new genres.

So to recap:
1) New Arcade racer. Hopefully Motorstorm with E3 2005 CG graphics. Hire Evo to make that a Launch title.
2) New FPS/Third Person GaaS franchise. Either bring MAG back or create a new IP like Anthem, Division or Destiny with PvE and PvP. It's the most popular genre this gen, you cant just ignore it.
3) Full Blown RPG. Preferably a Space Sci Fi setting, but i will settle for a treasure hunter simulation in the Uncharted world as long as they embrace the supernatural elements and add cool new enemies that are fun to fight with different builds.

They have all other genres covered. The biggest thing they are lacking this gen are games like Warhawk, Socom, MAG, Killzone and Resistance. They closed down Zipper and Incognito and all those talented MP devs at Insomniacs and GG are now making single player games. I bet they hate their lives. Put them all on one team. Make a super studio. A fucking Avengers team of multiplayer devs. Imagine a next gen game with space ships flying around while you fight on the ground against 256 enemies with Killzone's fantastic gunplay and insomniacs fantastic weaponary.

And thank God for that. The combat is boring and the enemy variety is lacking severely. No, changing the color of an enemy and giving it more health is not "variety"

Actually bring back their multiplayer focused IP. The fact that they charge money for multiplayer but provide nothing of significance I can't get elsewhere in the multiplayer space baffles me. Also stop making everything so goddamned serious and stop reusing stuff. I roll my eyes whenever I see climbing up stuff you clearly can't fall off of, child companions, or starting the game as a child the same way I roll my eyes seeing number pop out of enemies when attacking them.

Won't argue with you there ...

BotW is so much more about the "large environment" than about "sneaking and stabbing/shooting". And I won't complain about that!

Bring back Ratchet and Clank full time. Bring back first person shooters. Bring back Wipeout. Crack down on Polyphony (long overdue).

edit: I'd really like to see Infamous brought back by a different developer. Sucker Punch seems to have moved on, and that's OK.

Give me a MP focused game, preferably an FPS. Its a valid complaint that the majority of their games are now 3rd Person.

Reboot Resistance. Give me a first person (or even third) in Russia during initial Chimera outbreak. Small tight engaged firefights with horrifying enemies. Or reboot Killzone and give me the first war, go the opposite of Resistance and large scale invasion ala KZ2 but with Next Gen CPUs

Resistance and Killzone didn't fail because they were bad, they failed because Sony exclusives didn't get the respect nor the marketing they needed.

This so much.

Sly Cooper I'm at least OK with waiting for because of the TV show coming out, Sly was great as a game but it always had that perfect Saturday morning cartoon potential as well so I'm glad that's finally happening. PaRappa though... what do I have to look forward to? The mobile game they announced a year and a half ago that's probably cancelled at this point and will likely be some generic F2P gacha trash if it ever actually does come out? Just shameful.

I agree with you: I don't think that Sony's major titles all feel and look the same. If we get the same level of variety in Sony's output during generation 9, I'll be perfectly happy.

Reading more of this thread and I noticed people keep bringing up the cinematic elements of the games as if they affect the gameplay in anything.

Apart from Naughty Dogs games most of these cinematic games have plenty of gameplay. I mean take God of War 4 for example, game is longer than the whole Greek series put together and only 20 prosent og og game is cutscenes. Or Horizon which is mostly gameplay or Days Gone.

I mean how does cinematic elements destroy the game?? The gameplay in every single game is very important and you spend most of the time in the gameplay.

Which only emphasizes how sad the current video-game landscape is, despite indie evangelists pretending otherwise.

From a combat perspective I don't think it's a negative. It just seems like developers have tried to give people more combat options. So games can be played more than just one way. Stealth is one of those things that can easily be mishandled, but even games that don't revolve around the concept are getting better at it now so it can be used as a legitimate tool for play instead of just something that's frustrating.

*ahem*

Comparisons for any game is inevitable, so that's not really an issue. I'm just talking about this notion that Sony has this mold that all games are cut from. Because to arrive at such a conclusion would require you to ignore all the things that make those games unique. That's why I brought up those other games. Because yes there's not a lot of combat in BotW, but you can absolutely boil it down to what I described if your goal is to minimize the aspects that make it unique. And that's really what's going on when the "All Sony games are the same" claim pops up.

Maybe I just need to jump on the Virtual Reality train to get what I want.

I'd like to see more vibrant, creative games. Games that feel that they've been brought to life from a comic book. Ratchet and Clank and Spiderman feel that way, but we've lost a lot of cool, colourful titles like Wipeout, Motorstorm, Jak, Sly Cooper, etc.

I think they're sitting on a gold mine with some of these IPs, and they should be looking for ways to leverage them with third party developers.

Well I mean they've become very successful with these narrative driven 3rd person action games and while there's nothing inherently wrong with that it would seem they've become a bit too reliant on them. As good as they are sometimes it'd be nice to see them make a change in direction. I don't hold it against them though for wanting to stick to what works.

I don't think they're the same at all and if anything they have one of the most varied outputs out there. That said I'd love to see them do more platformers. Ape Escape 4, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet and Clank or something new in the genre. But above all else, I hope they support expensive single player games as much in the future, as they do now. Service games you can get from everyone everywhere, but games like God of War, The Last Guardian, Until Dawn and similar are much rarer these days.

Sony has variety, but the pretty much heavily market the 3rd person, narrative driven games. Obviously they do have other titles out, and games like GT:Sport and Detroit gets a nice push, But a lot of people don't even though the other games exist.

The Funny thing about it, is that i noticed this just after this e3.

The irony of it all is that this is what Nintendo lacks in it's arsenal of games.

I joked that Nintendo should give Sony a couple of side scrolling adventures, and Sony give them a 3rd person narrative driven game or two.

Frankly I think the changes Sony needs to make are not on the game side, they are fine there.

The real innovation we saw this generation were all outside of games, as frankly the games this gen were basically better looking 360 games in most cases. We didn't see some new genre of game emerge that technology couldn't do before like with previous generations (except VR). So instead their competitors have innovated everywhere outside the games.

Microsoft has innovated on the concept of how much we really own games with backward compatibility, or the business model behind games with Gamepass, or accessibility with their new controller. These are where Sony needs to catch up.

Nintendo has innovated on the convenience of experiencing AAA games with the Switch, plus they have continued to innovate with console crossplay (with MS) and with how games can be a positive experience on growing minds (Labo). I don't think Sony wants to catch up with Nintendo on any of this, but if they go deeper into game streaming they need to have a way to stream games on mobile devices that works much better than the old Vita remote play trick.

Ditch crouch/stealth. Ditch walking segments. Ditch climbing segments. Move on from uncharted all together. Maintain writing quality and emphasis on story. Invest in new IP for various demographics & new genres. Develop more mechanically complex games.
