"Hello, I'd like to declare this souvenir"
* heaps 30cm shell on table *

How did she even get into the airport to begin with? This thing certainly isn't a lightweight?
The lack of common sense with some people is astounding.

I'm glad no one was injured because of this, a lot of people could have been seriously hurt because of this woman's ignorance.

I remember when I was a child at school, they found an old world war bomb in the school fields after they were doing work on the water or gas pipes. They sent us to school library and made us sit there whilst the bomb disposal came and took it away to a field outside of town. I didn't realise what was happening at the time.

and it's an American tourist who might not know anything about this stuff. If someone showed me that and said it was an unexploded shell I wouldn't know what to think but apparently peoplr are saying in here they are dangerous. She might not have had that information.

You need not be an America tourist to be that ignorant. Its common sense to not touch or transport unexploded shell of any kind.

She is lucky it didn't go off. As far as I know this rusted off ammunition can be really unestable, either they can be a dud or a literal timebomb that can go off without notice. Bomb disposal teams in Europe hate working on them.

That one fires rounds twice as long as the one in OP

I haven't thought about it much but I wouldn't have assumed that every type of large round was explosive. I'm not saying I would have done the same thing, I'd never bring something like that near an airport. I have some awareness of unexploded ww2 ordinance, but I don't think it's crazy for her to believe it wasn't dangerous. Especially if she didn't dig it up and instead bought it from someone.
Huh. I'll be damned.

Still, I think most people even vaguely familiar with World War 2 would jump to "bombshell" before "gigantic bullet from an antiaircraft gun", considering how much bombing went on in Europe.

I mean, if you see something that's made specifically for the purpose of exploding, and bring it to an airport to take it with you in the flight, either you 100% in the know that it could not explode or you're pretty stupid.

You don't know what the words "unexploded shell" mean? What are you talking about

Here's a thought: don't go near old war devices, especially if you're not sure what they are.

I think the fear of these things is a European phenomenon. I've never heard of someone accidentally setting one off.

There are lots of folks that collect old grenades and shells (typically not active ones though)

Responding to someone else's stereotyping with some casual racism?
Why limit this thread to casual racism of Americans?

1) It's not racism when the Chinese government actually has to issue notices for its tourists about how to show basic courtesy abroad.
2) My family is from China, and they have the same attitude towards mainland Chinese tourists being douchebags.
3) So generalizing Chinese tourists is racism, but generalizing American tourists is A-ok? That is pretty telling.

I've heard of people donating old grenades (accidentally, as in they left it in a box and dropped the box off without checking what was in it) and other UXO to places like Salvation Army or other charities in the US and that was a big deal.

UXO is also a huge problem in African countries that have seen a lot of warfare. Old landmines are particularly dangerous.

I know everyone has already jumped on the pile and I don't wanna give you shit but the bolded part is the dumb part. A certain lack of knowledge can certainly be viewed as "dumb", especially when it is common knowledge and could have killed many people.

Let's move on from generalizing about entire countries of tourists, okay?
