I think one of the biggest challenges they'll face in the states will be Xbox is going to be firing on all cylinders in 2020. They aren't going to be able to walk in the room with PS5 and mic drop like they did with PS4. Shit is gonna get bloody.
Absolutely!

It already should have been in 2013, when both came into the new gen pretty even on a sales level.. MS dropped the ball, just like Sony a gen prior and that was that.

But now, with both of them will be going feet first.. It will be a great time to be a gamer.

Personally, I'm just happy we still have dedicated video game boxes. I'm glad Sony had success with the brand.

I do think it's the people involved in PlayStation that make me a pretty loyal customer. They'd have to do something hideous to taint my image of them (like how Xbox ended up in the run up to and including the One reveal). I love people like Shu who seem like genuinely nice people involved in this huge business and not just money men with eyes gleaming at how they can rip off their customers at all costs. Sony are far from perfect and of course it's still a huge business, but they've earned a lot of good will thanks to people like Shu, and I think it shows.

You're confusing evolution with traditional gaming. Non-traditional gaming would be Kinect, PSVR, PS Move, Wii U Gamepad and Wii Motion.
Non-traditional gaming is also games that don't work and aren't complete products right out of the box.

Fallout 76 is not a traditional game because its online only. God of War is a traditional game.

That's not to say that non-traditional games are bad, it's to say that for preservation purposes and consumer rights and ownership they don't stand up to traditional games.

I imagine it will hurt quite a bit this time.

They no longer have any technical excuse(s) not to do it anymore.

And you can bet MS will make that a major marketing point (and an attractive one, to be honest), if Sony omits that feature on the PS5.
Yeah, we live in a quickly becoming pure digital age. The PS4 took part during that transition and people have huge libraries of games now. To tell everyone you can't carry that forward to a new super powerful box that of course can emulate that would just be silly. Doubly so seeing the competition is making a big song and dance about exactly that. Consoles always should have been trying to emulate the PC scene but now with the architecture they're using it's finally a viable element that they basically CANNOT miss out on.

I think it's guaranteed at this point and Sony are more intelligent than they were during the PS3 days. I just can't see them mucking up so monumentally.

Let's be honest, it was mostly a good transition for them because of the massive success that was the PS1 and they had essentially no worthwhile competition for a long-ass time (a limping Sega and soon-to-be-dead Dreamcast barely count). There was nothing great about the hardware itself, had the same hard-to-work-with complaints that the PS3 had, and for the entire generation it "enjoyed" noticeably worse image quality than the DC/GC/XB. You could make the argument that the struggling Dreamcast had the superior lineup during the PS2 launch and launch window. But it didn't matter. Sony had the superior brand awareness.

Likewise the eventual massive success of the PS2 is the only thing that stopped the PS3 from tanking the Playstation brand completely. As far as Sony moves go I am more impressed by how they turned the PS3 around. From the brink of death to actually beating the 360 in total sales by the end of the generation.

Well that and Sony had Madden and EA overall. Sega had no shot. In terms of being impressed by their turnaround of the PS3 I can agree but will mention that even with their much better world image and brand awareness the PS3 just managed to statistically tie the 360 worldwide which goes to show you how strong MS performed in the US market more than anything (and this is with the RRoD fiasco) and why MS continues to focus on the US (and GB to a smaller degree). But yes Sony should be commended for being able to recognize what needed to be changed with the PS3 and acting on it in a somewhat timely manner.

They are hitting the ground running, I do agree they do need more 1st party Japan games but man, it's amazing each year, they have 1 or 2 BIG GAMES and the other games don't get looked over and are just as important.

I still think it's hilarious that Sony was so in love with that Spiderman font that they went with it to brand PS3.

I hope you don't think making good new games is like just creating a new studio or buying a studio, Phil snap his fingers and the 9/10s and 10/10s will rain down. It took years and many games to get studios like ND and Guerrilla to be where they are today.

I'm more speaking Xbox's initiative as a whole (Game Pass, streaming, renewed first party push, etc) rather than their games catching Sony. I agree it'll take a long time to match Sony's output.

I'm sure they're always striving to continue the excitement of the PS4 launch and how much they pushed it for core gamers. I just really wish they were more open with the community and less secretive all the time. It would help show that they haven't lost sight of that mission.

Get some top people who engage with gamers on Twitter all the time like Spencer, Penello, Hryb, Ybarra, etc.

Would also like to see them even ACKNOWLEDGE Reddit's /r/PS4. Nearly 1 million subscribers, but it's like pulling teeth reaching out to Sony most times. Meanwhile Microsoft and Nintendo reach out to and work with /r/XboxOne and /r/NintendoSwitch.

I mean, they wanted to sell us a games console when the competition was selling us a tv-enabled water cooler.

Are we really still believing that, even when Xbox arguably handled early-gen exclusives much better than PS4? That original May reveal of Xbox One was just off point in marketing, clearly trying to appease investors and non-gamers, but even a month later at E3 they were back to being about games.

Calling Sony secretive when MS doesn't even give us sales numbers is weird, these few weeks alone we had interviews from a few of their top guys.

I kinda like it when companies stfu and do their work. Look how valve works on stuff right out in the open and doesn't say a word. That seems to drive alot of people nuts but it suits me just fine. That pr outreach stuff is not all roses. It can get wierd.

We'll see. Sony has been coasting in every area besides games and it seems like its just going to keep going that way with ps+ getting cut down and not showing much support for less sucessful titles like Gravity Rush 2. The ps3 didn't struggle as much as it did because of games.

As I said last thread, hope Sony can fix their big criticisms from this gen going into next. Lack of nickname change, lack of account information change, lack of BC, lack of DS4 battery (personal pet annoyance) as well as we-can't-talk-about-it. I think some people underestimate the backlash if Sony reveals that they keep ignoring all of these issues. Espescially as Microsoft espescially are on point in regards to these, and are potentially gearing up for more first party exclusives.
I think they are aware of those issue and i do think they should correct those ASAP.
However i don't think account information change will happen. BC should be a no brainer but PS now seems profitable. Unless cerny change the entire architecture of the console or doesn't plan for it. it should happen...but it's hard to tell the future like those guys do.

Very interesting article. That part about Ken really makes me think how he viewed the future of PlayStation vs what we are seeing now development-wise. I really like the way Sony are doing things now and I will always support them as long as they give me the games that I enjoy. Plus their hardware has never let me down.

Honestly, for me personally, if Xbox 2 still doesn't have compelling exclusives, then they aren't going to pull me away from PS5. I don't see how you can say they're firing on all cylinders when they still don't have that exclusive content.

Until Xbox has exclusives people care about they aren't firing on all cylinders.

While we can't talk about it, I believe that Sony isn't ignorant or agressive to change....I do think that they are just very conservative in there approach to things, but I don't think "never" is in their motto. Something's just takes time, and the right timing before you jump off, especially when money is involved and money that Sony has been historically known for throwing away.

Whatever the case, I think what Sony is doing now works and their competition doing what works for them works. I'm just hoping that they move the needle in the future and at least try to do something different. Not in core design, but at least in new ways to play. I'm bored of the additional periphials and hardware....do something different.

Yea, no. Focus on delivering the goods to the customer, and not spewing PR left and right.

Many many times interacting too much with gamers can backfire.

With the PS4 standardizing their architecture, Sony has zero excuses in offering backwards compatibility with the PS5 unless they are lax about Microsoft taking a significant portion of their US and European market shares this upcoming gen.

Agreed! Sony looks to have made all the right moves with PS4, which only made Microsoft's missteps at the start of the generation even worse. Next-gen is absolutely a different story and I can't wait to see what things look like when both console manufacturers are head to head again.

In some respects, PS4 is an amazing console.

The exclusive library is strong and it launched at a great price point and level of power. The controller was also a step up in most respects (battery life aside).

The lessons learned going from PS3 to PS4 seemed very core-centric. Making games easier to produce, the operating system as fluid as possible, etc. My hope is that they don't learn the wrong lessons this generation. Seems like they're trying to maintain some humility going forward.

I don't know if it's fair to say PS4 has been coasting in 2018. The exclusive software they've fostered and sunk 4-5 years is hitting shelves and breaking records. God of War and Spiderman alone are great examples of putting in the time, talent, and effort behind a game.

I wonder, because I heard PS NOW was using PS3's for the PS3 games are they going to start attempting to software BC emulate PS3 with new hardware and toss the PS3 servers?

Also, Ken seemed to really be a forward thinker. Who would have thought CPU's would be an important topic now?

it doesn't matter How Studios you buy or How much you pay.....

If that Studio have No Good or Expert in the game industry then we will have to wait For a good game from them....

BUT MS this time Has bought Good Develpoer and have a great passion for the games they make

So i Hope we See something Great For Microsoft Gamers (PC ,XBOX ) and Not for the competition with Sony or Nintendo

You can just say "why you're here now" by his name Shu. Mark Cerny.

Oh and throw in the move from 4GB to 8GB RAM. The other single reason Sony is "here".

The cheap and powerful design of the PS4 won the gen vs...whatever the hell MIcrosoft was doing to start the gen.

People retconn now with this exclusives stuff, nope.

Using Sony taking PS3 games off PS+ in 2019 as an example of "coasting" is laughable.

Shu is one of the good ones and I'm not concerned that he forgot how they got here, but there has been a fair bit of turnover at the top and it does feel like not everyone remembers exactly how they got here given some of there recent decisions.

Great idea. What Sony really need is for Shu to start tweeting "You realize you will see every game in 4K as your output right?" when people ask him about the Xbox One X being more powerful than the Pro.

Can't tell if you're in agreement or not.

Like I said, the initial marketing in the May reveal was focused on Kinect and tv input, but just one month later at E3 it was all games focused. People have a hard time getting rid of their initial impressions though (like the people in 2014 who still thought the 24 hour check-in existed).
