While nowhere near the first two, I do think the "kinda sorta" directors cut is a bit underrated. And still the third best film that has anything to do with a xenomorph.

I enjoy the tone, atmosphere, it's got some good characters, and it may have been Weaver's best performance as Ripley.

Still not the direction I would have preferred for the franchise to go, but it's okay I guess.

It's better than Covenant by a long shot at the very least. If people are going to give Alien 3 crap simply for killing a few characters in the beginning and "ruining Aliens" than what those two films did to the entirety of the Alien "lore" is ten times worse than decisions made simply for casting reasons.

In any event, while overall the Assembly Cut is my preferred cut, I really hate the way Ripley's death plays out. The way it's recut with the score edited and truncated is really distracting given it was all edited and flowed perfectly in the original version. I still don't really understand why you would remove the Queen bursting out of her as she falls except for maybe a logistics reason that really should be secondary to making the scene interesting. Both versions have crap effects for the shot where she actually enters the molten lead though.

Anyway here's the comparison:

Assembly Cut:

Theatrical Cut:

The theatrical version is just a way better edited affair and leaves the score alone.

She enters a furnace, I thought. Not lead.

I like the movie for the most part. Didn't like the killing of Hicks and Newt but I get it from a story point of view.

It felt really poorly put together. So the chestburster left Newt after she drowned and went into Ripley?

The Assembly Cut is underrated & Charles Dance is terrific in his disappointingly brief role. It's a VERY different Alien movie which throws a lot of people off. Personally I like how nihilistic and depressing it is.

For all its faults, it's got some of the best shots of the whole series;

the Alien getting right up in Ripley's face

the opening crash and rescue

Then there's Charle's S. Dutton's speech which is pretty awesome. "We're all gonna die. The only question is when. This is as good a place as any to take your first steps to heaven. The only question is how you check out. Do you want it on your feet, or on your fucking knees... begging?! I ain't much for begging!"

Also, it has the best reaction line to any death in the series.

I'll always have a soft spot for Alien 3.

At least it wasn't Prometheus.

I wish they'd gone with the batshit insane Xenomorph virus script though that ended up with a space station transforming into a giant Xenomorph.

The director's cut is a good film but it's no where near as good as the first two films.

I bum Fincher as much as anyone but it's a pretty bad film and I don't think it would've been all that good even if he had 100% creative control.

Great actors, some good atmosphere but killing Hicks, Newt and Ripley in the same movie was wack.

It's like half an hour too long, and the alien FX near the end are sooooo baaaadddd, but I enjoyed it

The acting is great all around, Charles Dance is particularly great, and this is by far Sigourney's best performance as Ripley. The super dark tone was right up my alley aswell .

Hicks is okay, and Newt was annoying so I really don't care about losing them.

Resurrection is probably more entertaining, because the movie comes across as if it were written and directed by actual aliens. Michael Wincott died much too early.

I enjoy it the assembly cut is the way to watch it.

Always makes me wonder what might of been considering all the ideas being thrown around and script rewrites along with the studio always hovering over Fincher while he worked.

Could have been great if the studio hadn't recut and destroyed it.
After not having rewatched the cinematic cut it in decades, I saw the Assembly Cut a few years ago and it was pretty good.
They should have let Fincher do his thing.

I like the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 better than Cameron's Aliens.

It's not Alien 3 really...

...it's Ripley 3.

It's the end of Ripley's story and her battle against the threat. It's wonderful.

That's why it's so great.

Alien, Aliens, Alien 3... all have a different flavor. Directed by 3 of the greatest directors ever. Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher.

Considering Alien 3 had massive production problems, but it STILL turned out this good, it's easy to immagine what could've been if production had gone smoothly.

I marked out hard for Tywin Lannister. Other than that, it was okay, entertaining, worse than 1 and 2, better than 4.

Its not canon. Nobody agrees its canon. It's Ripley's fever dream aboard Nostromos during cryo freeze.

Fincher took Newt, Hicks and Ripley and killed them all effectively trying to kill the franchise. Idiot.

A fascinating failure with moments of greatness between the flaws and an early indication of Fischer's visual prowess.

But it's a mish-mash of multiple script versions and script editors thatbately gels together as a cohesive narrative and while the DC and assembly cuts are better versions than the theatrical cut they're still essentially just as flawed.

A curio ultimately.

The characters say "fuck" a lot.

Bad things happen.

The action is OK.

Overall, mediocre flick. 7.8 on the 7-10 scale.

It's not terrible but it's not good either. Some nice acting and it's effectively claustrophobic (yay Fincher), but the story/plot are a mess. Pretty fascinating development hell that it went through. Kind of wish we could've seen the 'wooden planet' that was being worked on.

The wooden planet idea is just my kind of insanity. Total shame that will never get made.

I didn't think it was that good. It was a slog to get through. Not terrible, per se, but not close to good either.

I've never seen Alien Resurrection. It's the one I never got to when I bought the DVD set years ago. All four are going to be on The Movie Network this weekend, and I have them set to record, but I honestly don't know if I want to bother with 3 again or watch 4. I have so many movies to get to that are already recorded, and I've heard awful things.

I'm not really a big fan of the franchise to begin with, but for me it kind of begins with Alien and ends with Aliens. Nevermind that Alien 3 is rough, because yes, it is rough. The most damning thing it does happens right at the beginning. The survivors of the previous film, Ripley notwithstanding, are removed from the story so terribly that I want nothing to do with the story thereafter. Luckily for me I'm not turning my back on a great flick otherwise.

Newt is dead. Hicks is dead. I fell asleep halfway through the special edition and when I woke up it was still halfway through. Terrible fucking movie.

It's really boring. It doesn't have bad characters (that I remember). The concept itself isn't half-bad either. But the pacing of the movie is just terrible.

Didn't see the original cut but even the director's cut, which everyone says is the clearly better cut, was not all that good. It's actually pretty damn dull for most of it.

The consensus is it's bad but I friggin love it. The effects don't hold up at all but I could bathe in that bleak nihilism all day.

Newt and Hicks being dead makes it a disappointment instantly. I wont lie tho, it had some really interesting vibes, atmosphere.

That Alien looks like fucking garbage in a lot of places tho.

Its a great Alien movie ruined with some of the worst CGI. I wish they would've stuck to practical effects, as its very hard to watch now. I'll watch the entire series from time to time and its hard to get through 3 after watching the masterpieces that are Alien and Aliens.

I agree, but the alternative as they saw it was a whippet in a rubber costume.

It's bad but still leagues ahead of shit like Covenant. The first two films are in my favourite ever.

That's where I come down. Alien is top 3 all time for me, Aliens top 10. Alien 3 was interesting to watch, they definitely nailed the creepy desolate vibe and I give them credit for really going out there but all together it's not a very good movie. Still better than the later movies (on par with Prometheus for me) but nowhere close to the first 2.

Didn't realize it was David Fincher. Now to google why the movie was a cluster fuck behind the scenes.

It has some cool scenes and a cool alien.

Uhh, I think that's it.
Seen both cuts, neither are what I would consider a good movie.

Not as bad as resurrection....

The original idea for Alien 3 was pretty good though. The setting originally was some kind of space monastery. Sounded pretty dope.
Got any more info on this?

I enjoyed it, though I like the whole series except the new stuff. I like how 90s it is, also the bleak ending is pretty good. Now I feel like watching it.

Edit: it's on hbo go I see, gonna watch it now. Catch you dorks later:P

I believe this is mentioned in the making of on the DVD. This idea was shot down very early if I remember that part correctly. The setting for this movie was one of the many problems during production.

Aliens 3, if we could ever get Fincher version, would probably have been one of the best in the series.

As it currently stands I'd put at the 3rd best spot. Aline & Aliens share 1&2 spots. Alien 4, is a massive trash heap. Even with the issues in the latest films, Alien 4 is still the worst one in the series. You can tell they had no idea what they were doing at this point and were really scrapping the barrel for where to go.
