For the last month I've been reading this New 52 book. It's my first array into Shazam and it's one of the best comic books I've read I think. I love everything about it.

Trials was the best thing they done with the characters in 20 years. Sabine was an awesome villain
But this Trials one is even better?

In the article there is also a synopsis of the movie.

article said:
In the film, Billy (whose younger version is played by Disney Channel star Asher Angel) is assigned to a new foster home where he befriends comic book superfan Freddy. One day, Billy's subway ride is interrupted by a mysterious Wizard (Djimon Hounsou) whose been searching for ages to find the right successor to inherit his powers. He reveals the teen's been selected to gain an assortment of abilities, and all it takes is for Billy to say "SHAZAM!"

A Magical Negro naturally.

But with the villain not being Super'd Im guessing this movie is gonna be less bombastic and err block bustery than than the rest of DCs current universe flicks?

Is this even part of DCs universe or just a stand alone?

Movie is a question mark for me not knowing the director, but the Big with superpowers pitch is really appealing. If I had a concern, it's that there won't be enough of that as Shazam inevitably will need to fight the baddie and it'll become a more conventional origin story.

Its part of it. But DC is moving away abit from the connected universe in terms of cross over movies. Its more gonna be stand alone as alot of movies that are happening in the future. Its the best move imo.
Opens up to great stories.

Isn't Ms Marvel a completely different character from Marvel's Captain Marvel?
Carol Danvers was originally called Ms. Marvel, changed her super name to Captain Marvel partially to honor the original (now deceased) Captain Marvel and her original moniker was adopted by the infinitely superior character Kamala Khan.

There is a good reason he couldn't refer to himself as Shazam in earlier incarnations...

But yes, this Captain Marvel has an interesting history, from being sued for allegedly being too close to Superman, to Marvel getting the name, to DC buying the character rights then not knowing how to use him because, well, they already had Superman, to the whole thing with Miracle Man, etc. And then how screwed over he gets in comics and even videogames (where he doesn't even make the roster of the second game though his arch nemesis does). Even in Kingdom Come, where he had a big part, he was kind of screwed over.

I think it was literally forgotten the next month. I am not exactly sure but I know it was pretty much ignored except for Billy showing up in his white suit a few times

Yeah I remember that. It was the trails of Shazam or something... or was that the Freddy Freeman stuff? This is after all that, right?

The still looks awesome and I'm really digging the vibe, but the foam muscles do look ridiculous. Also, I'm not a fan of Levi.

Big Match John would've legit been AMAZING as Shazam.

If they have any senses, it'd be standalone. But anyway, even if it is, they probably will ignore everything.

Director said he expected to give the film a more Golden age vibe, and he also described the film to be "very fun, lighthearted". So I think it's going to be more in line with The Incredibles than anything. Blockbuster-y in that kind of way!

Looks good but I wish the costume was a little closer to Superman's chainmail look. It just needs more texture.

I'm sure it'll look better in the movie.

And in the New 52 the wizard was an aboriginal man.

I do like the eventual reveal that he's Mamaragan, because it's just so fitting.

But yeah, I'm increasingly hopeful with this film. Curse of Shazam is a good template origin story, but it does have issues - a few tweaks to lighten the tone and allow for more heroic hijinks (rather than bank on a sequel that wouldn't come for half a decade) could make it great.

DC didn't buy out Fawcett? They own all of their characters, not just Shazam. Spy Smasher, Bulletman etc.

But yes, buying the rights of characters and not using them is something stupid DC do all the time. They have wasted Charlton characters, completely ignored Archie superheroes and totally killed Fawcett characters other than Shazam. It's not like they're creating brand new characters either. It's always Batman for them.

Now that I look it up, it seems that they did. Over the years, I've heard conflicting stories from "they licensed them" to "they won them all in the lawsuit."

It's worth noting the context-- by the time the suit was being settled, the Captain Marvel books (and almost all superhero books) were selling terribly. After back-and-forth suits and appeals, Fawcett finally gave in and closed up shop.

That's good. Is this like a superhero version of Big (Tom Hanks) then? Because I think that would be a great contrast from the rest of the DC cinematic universe. Or is the Rock going to come in at the end and massacre him?
As far as comics go, I'm pretty sure almost everything they did with Shazam was quickly retconned and forgotten until someone else brought him back out. I remember that horrid countdown to Final Crisis having this horrid story around Mary Marvel that I don't think ever got referenced again.

That seems to be the case in regards to Shazam being a superhero version of Big, cause that's how the director described the film as such. As for Black Adam, we've heard he won't make an appearance but...
He is a prominent antagonist in the New 52 run and I wouldn't be surprised if all the news we've heard is a feint and Dwayne Johnson makes his full debut within the film.
