I'm sure many will disagree, but you shouldn't have to root to get a solid phone experience in 2017.

If you're looking to root a phone before you even purchased it I'd honestly look elsewhere. Too many solid phones on the market that you can't find something that fits your needs in your price range.
but what if you want a burnPlus5T but not the Chinese OEM spyware?

Considering that you can get cheap Chinese bluetooth headphones on Amazon that are completely wireless, I doubt that's it. Nice try though.
Have you ever used them? Or you're just going to assume they work as well as AirPods? The Chinese knockoff AirPods are literally 3x the size. But no... Apple isn't doing anything special /s

We were never discussing the quality of the headphones(though I doubt the Chinese headphones sound bad, they're probably fine).

You said:

But I suspect Google didn't want the wire there. They just don't have the competence of Apple.

So are implying that Google is more incompetent than random Chinese headphone vendors?

I'm not sure how this is anything but trolling.

Kinda want AirPods in theory. But I could never get the wired ones into my ears.

Packed up the iPhone. Shipping it back tomorrow.

Man... Back to 1 phone again lol.

Maybe I'll get a note 8. Wonder if any bf deals.

The expectation is that wireless headphones work. Not talking about sound quality but audio sync. Incredibly difficult.

You're quite rude in your replies. Not sure why you're taking everything so personally. Relax, champ.

Being rude is not my goal, but your posts come off as very trollish.

You do realize that you're in the Android thread right? No need to shill for Apple here

And I think the idea that Google, a company that employs some of the smartest people in the world, doesn't have the competence to build truly wireless headphones is ludicrous. The wire was a blatant design choice, it's easy to see just by the way Google wants you to wear the buds.

if you took a look at AJx recent post history you'd notice his posts in this thread are only about apple. if you can't figure out why, you're on your own GSG

Agreed, it adds nothing to the thread. Please stop.

I genuinely believe if google could release the pixel buds and have them be completely wireless they would have. I actually think they'd be solid if they were $99 or less. That's a more sweet spot. They're asking a lot for 160 dollars considering what else is out there. But I guess they realize it will be a very niche product for the google faithful so why not go for the premium niche category.

For now I just use the Web based YouTube instead of the app. You can still do full screen there. I'm sure Google fucked up somewhere in their update...
I feel like the Samsung way was always a hack.

Google finally natively supports crop to fit with YouTube as it works on pixel 2 xl and iPhone x.

I'm not sure if it's a white list or maybe related to oreo?

Anyone on s8 oreo beta? Does pinch to zoom work?

Well damn I just tried pinch to zoom again and... It worked! It didn't work yesterday. Are there some updates happening in the back ground or what lol because I didn't do anything...

Alternatively this seems to work
1. Install latest Youtube update (maybe try uninstall and reinstall update if you already have latest)
2. Go into settings -> apps -> youtube -> force stop
3. Open Youtube app (done)

Pulled the trigger on the Essential. It's the best looking phone this year, and with Sprint's promotional offer it's not a big loss if the phone ends up being terrible.

Easily the Android phone of the year. For $150 or whatever, easy choice. I wish that blue and copper color would come out. I'd grab one in a heartbeat.

Uravgconsumer loves the Razer phone. Said it's the best battery life he's ever gotten https://youtu.be/qLC8y-r8Iwc
this guy's shtick is underrated. I watched a bunch of his vids a while ago and I like that he just takes a light look at phones from a real life use perspective. I wouldn't go to him for some deep insight/critical analysis of a device but I always find his videos to be worth watching. Similar to MKBHD where I would never care for his opinion or (lack of) insight but his video quality/production value is bomb so his channel is usually worth watching. Like DetroitBorg too!

they're a software company that can't even build a good messaging app... can't really use "some of the smartest people in the world" defense!

Can't really say he's underrated when he has 1.5 million subs and is making bank lol

Flossy still goat. Worst production but most entertaining. Major go.

This. He's sooo good.

His iPhone X review is 10/10 gold. He's fucking hilarious in his vids while also being very good at explaining his likes and dislikes.

His LeBron hairline joke, the cafe latte joke, and his usual catch phrases are all there to make me chuckle.

I agree.

I've rooted every Android phone I've owned up until my current Note 8. That was the biggest reason why I stuck with the Nexus line, and opted for a Pixel XL.

However, a few months ago, I decided to unroot my XL. I only rooted for adblocking and theme support, both of which can be done without root on the Pixel running Oreo, or Samsung phones.

I just got sick of the constant hassle with custom roms, keeping magisk updated. The only thing I miss is the ability to make Cerberus a system app.

I honestly doubt I'll go back to rooting my phones in the future.

honestly, all I need is footage of someone using a phone for like an hr straight, doing their normal day to day, and I can get the gist of the phone's performance.

Sadly you don't see that stuff out there. Some quick cuts and a voice over telling me this phone is smooth and can multitask doesn't tell me shit.

Not to mention 'usage' is incredibly subjective these days

That's why I couldn't bite on the essential. Opening the messaging app vs going back and forth thru apps is crazy different

Flossy does the best reviews. MBKHD has the production value but he doesn't tell you anything you don't already know. I also like Pocketnow's real camera reviews when they go in depth about a phone's camera.

In terms of production values all of the big ones are pretty great. MKB, Linus, Austin, URAVERAGE ect... have pretty dope production values.

I feel like Floss gives the best info for most people though, and he's hilarious.

lol so that new lineage 2 game looks amazing graphically, can run at 60fps, fully supports the new widescreen displays, uses ancient android text box lol.

The sad part is, the API for creating a dialog will theme the dialog based on the platform theme. So they had to actually try to make it look like that. I guess something could be said for consistency?

He literally puts phones on a table and hits record on his Samsung Note. Then stops at the 55 minute mark. That's it. It's so terrible but still so entertaining. How

Oh yeah, big time.

When it comes to battery, I remember watching Flossy's Moto Z Play review and he was answering if the phone could last for two days and he just "HELL, no!" even though he agreed it was still the best out there. But for me it easily lasts two full days with what I consider normal to high use.

A reviewer like that though seems to use phones constantly throughout the day. Playing YouTube video while driving, a dozen different services doing constant notifications, etc.

More production values would only make it worse. I don't need a review to have the production values of an indie movie, like it was linked a couple of posts ago. Sure, it looks good, but if it doesn't convey any more information than Flossy does with his real reviews, then it's a waste of time for everyone.

It's entertaining because it's not a 10 minute video consisting of constant scripted dialogue cuts. It's a person who love tech and style and isn't afraid to review the former while considering the latter. He's not being paid off to review something good or bad, just being real about his own personal opinions on the devices in front of him. Plus his cat constantly gets in the way of the entire process.
