Yes, that's true -- it's just that the game has been so endlessly likened to FFVI and its relatives that I think everyone began to preliminarily accept that comparison. It comes off as strikingly similar in design, even right down to the different character themes (with different lead instruments), similar art styles, and so on.
Even the comparison to FFVI has misinterpreted. The producer was referring more the gameplay of VI (specialized party members with partial customization available) as a contrast to how the Bravely games adapted FFV's job system.

Yeah, it probably would've been a better idea to compare it to Treasure of the Rudras, but not many people have played that game.

That's always the risk at going all-out with nostalgia. Like with our own game, the immediate connection most people make is Chrono Trigger, but it actually draws from a lot of different classic games (plus our own ideas) so if someone's expecting an exact CT clone, they could be disappointed. With Octopath, you're right in that FF6 is the most obvious connection (they've specifically mentioned FF6, plus the sprites are very similar in style to FF6) so someone expecting a FF6-2 could end up very disappointed, while somebody just in the mood for a good RPG might really enjoy it.

More official info + screenshots on party chat and the subclass system.

An interesting thing to note is that party chats aren't limited to just two characters.
ok now I'm confused, I've not been following the thread too closely but from what I gathered I thought people were complaining that the party never talked with each other, which I get, but given those screenshots that clearly isn't the case. So what exactly were people upset about? the party not commenting on things in the over world itself?

Guessing 80-83 range for Meta/opencritic number

Really pumped for this game. Ever since SGDQ I've had the JRPG itch.

Really excited to play on my TV and then take it handheld for grinding sessions!

The disconnect is that when you do the main quest for any given character, there is no party interaction. The cutscenes exclude all other party members and talking to npcs doesn't logically reflect who is in the party. Party chats are separate as are using multiple path actions to complete side quests.

The game is written and designed in a way where the individual main quests and the optional content are disconnected. For some reason. It's pretty noticeable.

People were upset that the party's interactions generally take place outside their personal stories (for necessary gameplay/narrative reasons) and they don't actively participate in each others' stories.

But they clearly do interact and bond with one another quite a bit.

I see, thanks, I can see why people got kinda upset about that, at the same time given how open the game seems to be writing unique dialogue for multiple different potential party combos for 8 different quests in a 80+ hour game seems like it would be a monumental task so I get why they didn't go that route.

Your game looks cool; I'll have to check it out. Promise I won't take to an internet message board to complain that it's not similar enough to Chrono Trigger.

Doesn't have to be unique dialogue for different combinations though. That would be the ideal, but not very important. Could just be having extra lines from characters if they are in the party during a cutscene, and having NPCs who should recognize another character in the party mention that instead of talking about that character in third person as if they aren't there. That sort of stuff sticks out.

Keep in mind that this isn't a low content or cheap RPG either, there's a TON of optional text that most people will never see. Different solutions for sidequests, different outcomes, every single NPC you can talk to in the game can be "investigated" with a field skill and they have a paragraph long write-up on who they are. Many NPCs have an inventory list you can buy from or steal with the right character. And so on. They clearly put a ton of effort into the optional content, and it would have been nice to see that effort used to make the main scenario scenes feel the same way, rather than this isolated thing.

Just played the demo for 30 mins and i'm preordering the game right away, just wish xenoblade 2 was a little bit shorter so i can finish it before the game releases.

But Xenoblade 2 is garbage! Don't you know?!

y'all really still on about this? write a review of your own and publish it somewhere. that's way more effective than throwing shade at a guy with clear gaming preferences, even if they seem contradictory at times. Xenoblade 2 is a contentious title, that's not at all controversial. By the same token, it shouldn't be surprising someone thinks it's trash.

Him reviewing it is fine. I think people give him shit for this because he couldn't resist engaging in every other XB and XB2 thread in a passive aggressive manner, implying his opinion was more impartial and not blinded by hype or fanboyism or whatever. That's what gets people ticked off.

Having opinion is one thing, calling something trash or garbage is another.

Ok. Well the reason I ask is from the demo it looks on the blurry side in portable mode, but might be the post processing.

Do you think most people will play in portable mode or docked, btw?
Yeah, now that you mention it, I did wonder if maybe it's slightly sub native in handheld mode because at times it looked a bit too blurry... Maybe it's dynamic? I mean one would assume the game is too simple to struggle, but it's Unreal 4 so who knows.

I don't think there are any official numbers for resolution and such either.

Surely none of us has ever referred to any game as such, huh... Come on, this is a public forum, we're not giving talks at GDC.

Yeah, I've heard the postprocessing is quite aggressive. I don't notice such stuff much myself, though.
Gonna play in handheld mode. It's Switch's biggest strength, in my opinion. Not using it would be a waste. Holding games in your hands is a magical feeling. It's great even on PSP and 3DS. Vita and Switch are on a whole other level.
