I haven't played Scrabble with my wife for years and tonight I remembered why. She's like an evil genius at the game and completely trounces me. I get so worked up losing in the game that I'm angry with myself. I'm struggling to make one three letter word and she's making triple word scores left and right. It drives me crazy.

My problem is playing defensively. She refuses to open the board up and give me any place to move and I get so frustrated I end up setting her up for major points.

Scrabble is the worst.

Word length only really matters a whole lot in Scrabble if you're playing all of your tiles; positioning is much more important. I'd suggest downloading Words with Friends on a phone or tablet, then using that to practice with random people to get a better sense of different people's strategies. Just use your losses as learning opportunities.

Once I lost a game and blurted out "stupid game of luck" which everyone found to be pretty funny and i only meant it in a somewhat self deprecating way.

Seems like you know how you can improve. If you don't see any plays that won't open the board up try just swapping tiles, maybe you'll force her to open the board for you. Losing a turn is worth it if playing is going to set her up for a double or triple word tile.

If she has a much larger vocabulary than you then you might be boned. Scrabble really relies on knowing a ton of bullshit "Scrabble words" too, if your wife knows these and you don't you have no chance. Words like qi, qat, xi, joe, and za are essential for playing those high-score tiles when the rest of your hand sucks. If you take advantage of bonus tiles and S's you can score a ton of points with just a few tiles.

But if you're more or less equal in terms of the kinds of words you're using you just need to be more patient. Like kubev said, every time you lose ask yourself what you could have done differently and make a conscious effort to follow through on the next game. Getting pissed off even though you know exactly what mistake you're making isn't going to help anything.

Also keep in mind that luck does play a huge component in the game, you can only tell who is truly better by playing a ton of games and seeing who wins more often. In any given game it's easy for one player to win by getting the blanks and more high-scoring letters even if they're not thinking as strategically.

this is why i only play rummikub

I like the idea of that game but seeing the name spelled out raises my blood pressure. It's a family favorite and without fail every game will have multiple instances of people taking 10+ minute long turns that culminate in a board with multiple illegal strings and the question "Wait, which tiles came from my hand again?"

I haven't played in a few years.

I can't play Monopoly. That game takes forever. I should preface this by saying that this happened more than fifteen years ago, but the last time someone asked me to play Monopoly ended with there being strawberry shampoo all over the kitchen as a result of my attempts to keep the other people in my apartment at bay.

my family are sticklers for following the rules, though everytime we get together it always takes a round or two for everyone to remember the rules and flow

we also have a time limit for turns, 4 mins max

I didn't realize how smart my wife was until we were in a cabin in the middle of nowhere on our honeymoon having some drinks and she absolutely OBLITERATED me in scrabble

Yeah as others have pointed out you may want to look up some bullshit scrabble words as well as strategy . I'm no pro but I know dobt ever set others up, hit the triples ( letter) and always always use your S and blank to make two words .
I have 2 friends consequently who both claim they've never been beaten and both beat me with 300 + scores. I'm more a 250-300 2 player scorer

I have found that Scrabble is a fantastic way to tutor children in English. It helps build their word knowledge and confidence.

I never let the little shits win though.

Which games are fun when you're complete shit?
Tons of them. Look beyond what's on the shelf at Target.

Get some friends together and play Codenames instead. That way she can be on your team.
Codenames is a great one (and it's actually at Target, I think).
Check out the BoardGameGeek Hot 100 or top rated games there. You shouldn't have to fucking study word lists to have fun with a board game.

I've never been to a target but I assume it's a shop with lots of boardgames. In which case, where am I supposed to find this game that is also fun if you totally suck at it?
I suck at almost all games. I told you where to look.
Target doesn't have a ton of games. That was my point. Though they're getting better.

Only time I get angry playing Scrabble is when someone is taking forever to come up with a word. Put them letters down or exchange them, just do something goddamnit

Yeah but it will take 3 days.

Nah, Monopoly isn't that long, I'm not sure how that idea spread so much but if you follow the rules it's not too bad. The big one is that very few people hold auctions when someone opts not to buy a property, even though it says in the rules that that's the procedure and it's obvious the game will drag forever if you don't.

That aspect of Monopoly has always been really interesting to me, nearly everyone has heard of it, a ton of people of played it at least once, hardly anyone actually knows the rules.

They were. I'm not sure if it's a national thing or just my store but I was just at Target the other day and the entire board game section was on sale, outside of a few staples like Catan and Cards Against Humanity everything was 50% off. I assume they're cutting back on that section, we'll see.

Nothing worse than playing board games (or video games) with sore losers. Talk about sucking all the enjoyment out of what's supposed to be a fun activity.
So true. I play Magic with a few friends and although I've got a killer deck that I only bring out at their insistence, a couple of them get really angry about losing to it. Makes it difficult to have fun.

And the problem is if you don't do auctions, there's a decent chance these are also people who are iffy about any kind of deals being made. "If you let them get the whole street they win!" Yeah, but I'm paying £2K for two bloody blue properties, and if they don't accept those ridiculously generous terms then we're stuck in this limbo forever!

Oh yeah, that's an issue with any trading game. I hate Catan because of this, someone will inevitably notice someone has 7 or 8 points and warm everyone else not to trade with them. I'll try to point out that the game is just going to stretch out for hours if no one is trading, and that if we're just going to sit around until someone gets lucky enough to roll the resource they need to win then we may as well play Candyland. Some people just can't see that helping an opponent can sometimes be beneficial.
