I find it interesting that it seems people prefer he wouldn't help at all.
Does it help his image? Yes
Can he do better and change the entire infrastructure? I guess.
But why does these questions matter if the end result is benefiting the people of Flint? Just because he's profiting from it doesn't mean that it shouldn't be done at all.
It's as if you can only help other people if you're not benefiting, and I find it fascinating.

Ultimately, people would rather see POC suffer if it means they can own their evil billionaire boogeyman.

he has the funds to ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT FLINT

HE IS NOT

HE IS REQUESTING CONTAMINANT TESTING FOR INDIVIDUAL HOUSEHOLDS SO HE CAN INSTALL DUBIOUSLY HELPFUL WATER FILTERS

i'm sure he'll be thrilled that you think criticizing him is now racist, just the other day he tried to say "billionaire" was a slur

Someone needs to realize that Musky here hasn't done shit for the world while the Bill Gates of the world are actually doing something.

Good job making fun of my depression, by the way.

Musk is still young, he can continue to invest in new business that create jobs and opportunities. Bill Gate didn't start his charity work until he is closing to retirement either.

It is much more beneficial for smart people to invest money than just giving money away. Can you imagine Musk just donate his money and retire after paypal, never create SpaceX and Tesla?

Well isn't this thread a good example of how progressive, tolerant and respectful 'Era is?

at least he didn't close random user's e-wallet accounts in the early 2000's and pocket their balance, or remove the colour yellow and backup sirens from forklifts in his factories risking worker lives
This has been proven to be false. Might want to read beyond the headline of sensational hit pieces unless you're actually ok with spreading lies. In that case:

That honestly sounds like he's doing something

This seems a simplistic characterisation of less than glowing response.

Some people are indicating skepticism until they actually see something done. I don't know why tweets four years after a crisis began warrant unreserved praise for someone with a history of promising the moon.
https://www.bloomberg.com/features/elon-musk-goals/

Some find it distasteful that it often seems like these are as much about PR as they are altruism. There is a great deal of philanthropy that occurs without desire for praise.

Some further may think that his responses may not be practical or get to the root of the problem, like transport network experts who poopoo his LA tunnel or people not wanting to see a private company offering to take over a territories public infrastructure and utilities.

??

Get a clue.

Are you a Republican? Because you just did exactly what Republicans do- point to how shitty the government is when Republicans are in charge and say "Look, the government can't do anything!"

Seriously, govt is being run by the anti-govt people rn. They literally go into govt to break and defund goverment programs and services, then proclaim at the top of the mountain that it doesn't work. They are literally that stupid kid that puts a stick in the bike wheel.

Ironically, it makes sense that they would hate someone who has repeatedly done things which actually make the world a better place. A lot of people here thrive on cynical hatred of everything and someone who has actually done so many good things while also being a self-made billionaire must really make them feel hopelessly inadequate. So instead of celebrating the success of someone who has dedicated his life to serving humanity they try to tear him down because he violates their world view.

Thank you, dearest Musk, for making an awkward middle-man that barely works outside of the US for online sales.

Thank you for your ingenious Tesla design that only requires 3-6 years of driving 11,000 miles to become carbon neutral.

We would like to thank you, dearest Musk, for smiting those entitled whiny unions that drone endlessly about "working conditions". Your heart emoji after putting those faithful workers through 7000 cars in 1 week was truly appreciated and worth the 2x increase in risk of injury.

We also extend our gratitude for over-engineering a submarine that couldn't fit in the cave. Clearly you are ready for the next time this tragedy occurs.

You truly are the savior of mankind. We are not worthy of your "billionaire" friends' hard-earned tax dollars that could be budgeted to help Flint actually get clean water. Instead they shall wait faithfully for you to come up with an over-engineered solution that you can sell to some corrupt government officials. Praise be.

A big reason why some tend to hate Musk can be summed up here: https://www.buzzfeed.com/carolineodonovan/elon-musk-tesla-spacex-war-press-media

That said, I'm probably one of the resident ERA Musk haters but a massive complaint about him has been his lack of philanthropy towards actual "home" projects. Here he is saying, granted it's Twitter, that he would look into helping Flint with filters. Now this is a small piece of the big problem but it's something. If he can come through and provide some meaning help to residents then it's to be commended.

Thank you, dearest Musk, for making an awkward middle-man that barely works outside of the US for online sales. FALSE. In Europe PayPal is very popular and works great.

Thank you for your ingenious Tesla design that only requires 3-6 years of driving 11,000 miles to become carbon neutral. FALSE. The report used biased information about energy generation that was only valid for the mid-west of America from what I remember.

Your heart emoji after putting those faithful workers through 7000 cars in 1 week was truly appreciated and worth the 2x increase in risk of injury. FALSE. He wasn't against unionization from what I remember. The exact stuff I don't remember.

We also extend our gratitude for over-engineering a submarine that couldn't fit in the cave. Clearly you are ready for the next time this tragedy occurs. As far as I know it did fit but they had already enough other stuff so they didn't use it

He finished a massive project in Australia to provide stable electricity by making a battery station in time.
He was one of the first to help Puerto Rico to help with the electric network.

Try again.

The hate Musk is getting is unreal.

Yes he likes attention. Yes he has sometimes a too big of a mouth and can be obnoxious. But this bashing is ridiculous.

Era told me he doesn't do shit, but Era also showed me stuff of him doing shit.

Odd.

But he's not doing the exact thing that Era thinks he should do, in the exact manner Era thinks he should do it.

Nothing more irritating than armchair billionaires. I guess it's far easier for them to sit on their arses and bash people who are at least trying, than to actually do something positive themselves.

1) Nope PayPal is fucked in Japan and is region-locked. I have a balance which I cannot touch anymore. For the record, my teensy regional bank will let me transfer anywhere in the world. Fucking useless for what's supposed to be international.

2) Nope. The study was adjusted from the Swedish estimate. On average for the US, 77.6% of energy generated is from fossil fuels. Unless you want me to go state-by-state, which is absolutely ridiculously granular to try and adjust this clear conclusion.

3) Sorry. Correction. The Thai head of the team (Narongsak Osatanakorn) said "the submarine doesn't fit in with our mission for the cave". To which Musk said "you're not the expert". Very useful and constructive.

4) I mean the SA government paid $50 mill for it, so I fucking hope it does the job as advertised.

5) Didn't know that. Great that he's responsive. Still wouldn't trust him with water sanitation.

If he even helps a small group of people, it will be more than most. Hopefully he comes through in a bigger way though.

This is a great gesture from Musk (if it happens) but surely it sends the wrong message to the local government? Surely this gives the indication that individuals will fix something that the local government should really be doing, so other local governments and councils will now be thinking 'hmm lets not fix that infrastructure issue because musk or someone else will come in and fix it for us'.

I'm not well educated on this specific issue though so perhaps there is a specific issue in Flint which makes it impossible for the local government to fix the water?

Nail on the head

I appreciate the gesture but we need to fix this at the municipal level

And honestly... with how our government is in persistent turmoil this could take awhile

You're skeptical because you hate yourself. basically. Maybe also bitter that you're not working at Musk's level.

But if you took that energy and pushed it in a positive direction, maybe you could make a difference in your community, maybe even disrupt a local industry. Who knows. But if ~1000 normal people did that, it could be the same intensity of change as 1 rich person trying to apply themselves.

This is like one of the cornerstones of a democracy and it's something that our new anti-democratic culture is conditioning people to forget, because you're easier to control when you're just passively reading the news online and sulking about it, hating, disassociating with nerd shit instead of taking direct action.

I believe in you guys. Climb out of that sunken place. Hating is bad for your health. Be constructive- it's easier than you think.

Good night.
Are you alright?

This is precisely why people hate his plans for tunnels and railways, plus the push for AI driving by Uber and such. It makes an easier way for them to lean back and wait for a private company to attempt to fix it.

Wouldn't this type of thinking apply to countless charities?

Musk sold Paypal in 2002. I think there may have been some changes made to the company in 15 years.

Not sure where you're getting your energy generation figure, but last year fossil fuels generated 62.7% of the grid energy in the US. Obviously getting better each year.

He was in contact with the diving team leader if memory serves me. I doubt he would have put in the time and effort if the Thai government didn't ask for help.
