Microsoft is preparing to add Dolby Vision support to its Xbox One S and Xbox One X consoles. The addition will mean Microsoft's consoles join the Apple TV 4K and Google's Chromecast Ultra as the only streaming devices that currently support both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

Microsoft is testing out its Dolby Vision support with Xbox Insiders right now, and it appears to be limited to streaming apps for now. Netflix is one of the first apps to be updated with Dolby Vision for the Xbox One S and Xbox One X, and it's not clear if Microsoft plans to extend this to Blu-ray discs too.

This is huge for an LG B7 owner like me.

This would mean a free auto switch from calibrated HDR Game Mode to Dolby Vision Cinema Mode when watching Netflix TV Shows/Movies, without the need to use the TV Netflix in-built app, and still leveraging Dolby Atmos for Headphones at the same time.

Awesome news!

Need to extend it to UHD and MS 4K UHD streamed movies too. If they do that top marks. Otherwise its fairly useless given any TVs with DV support have a netflix app (only real DV content currently) that supports it built in.

Yeah, I hope this will also extend to Movies & TV app and Blu-Ray app.

Anyway, having all processed by the console is much better, as now we can have both Dolby Vision & Dolby Atmos for Headphones (not available with TVs)

It's bound to go to blu ray eventually, no reason not to. Starting to see dolby vision on lots of uhd 4k blu ray releases, glad I didn't splurge on a dedicated player.

I think it will be added to disc app before the end of the year.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. HDR is rarely supported as is.
Dolby Vision is HDR. HDR10 and Dolby Vision are just different formats of the HDR technology. If HDR10 is being supported, no reason Dolby Vision can't. It all comes down to cutting cost, you have to pay Dolby for Dolby Vision and companies don't want to.

How/where/ what set up do you use to get the effect though?

I'm currently rocking audio technica headset on an astro mixamp
Download Dolby Access app from Store, then just connect any pair of headphones to Xbox -> Go to Xbox Audio Settings -> Select Dolby Atmos for Headphones as the default Headset sound option

Just remember to:
  • One time purchase DAfH after first 30-day trial, it's about 15$ (and it's worth every penny. The license will also extend to all your Windows 10 devices with the same account);
  • Uncheck the option "HDMI/Optical" under the setting if you directly wire plug the headphones to Xbox controller;
  • Uncheck the option "HDMI/Optical" if you directly connect the headphones wirelessy through Xbox Wireless protocol (for example with Razer Thresher for Xbox, non-Ultimate);
  • Check the option "HDMI/Optical" only if you have an audio hub connected via HDMI/Optical to Xbox, and with the headphones connected to the hub (cable, wireless, doesn't matter);
  • In all the cases above, remember to DISABLE any type of other audio processing from the headphones if present (for example DTS:X or Dolby for Headphones), as Dolby Atmos for Headphones must be the ONLY audio processing for an headphone that MUST be Stereo.
That's all.
Doing so will also natively decode/transcode real Dolby Atmos tracks from movies/games to Stereo, retaining real spatial audio. It's amazing.

Dolby Vision + Atmos will be so good :D

I'm well aware of all of this. My point is that Dolby Vision won't get much support until HDR10 gets widespread support

Yeah, im really disappointed with Playstation in regards to not having some of these features. Though i mainly play consoles for exclusives so this puts me into a annoying position where i can't really do anything but complain.

I'm sure it will eventually come to the Xbox BD player. Either way this is a great addition.

Great addition. I still think it's ridiculous we get these standard wars with tech. Eventually one with be standard and on betting on HDR10.

Thanks for the explanation.

So I could use my mixamp if I deactivated the Dolby headphone..

Article says limited to streaming apps, for now. So we could see this implemented to games in the future for S & X. I'm down!

I'm pissed my PS4 pro still doesn't do either Atmos for games or Dolby vision for movies, or hdr YouTube. It doesn't even take 4K UHD discs. So much for a supposedly 4K hdr machine.

I'm tempted to pick a xbox for this matter, but I know the xbox one x is a stop gap machine and next gen is around the corner, so I'll be double pissed if I get one now and new machines are announced next year.

I don't know what to do about it, so ultimately I guess I'll do nothing, just be mad about it

If it doesn't come to the blu ray app then this is mostly useless. Every tv that has Dolby vision support already had built in apps that support DV so this just seems weird if it excludes the blu ray app, which is where DV is needed the most.

DV used to require a chip due to capabilities for 12 bit data. They moved to a software solution later, which is what you will see on this, just like the UHD players that get DV with firmware updates.

Sony resting on their laurels with PS4 big time, particularly the half-assed Pro (which I own). They need to start actually supporting things. 4K Blu-ray would be a start, smh.

Lol this is exactly where I am at. Now if only LG can find a way for us to use wireless headphones while still in Game Mode that would be great.

I'd really like to know what % of Xbox users actually use 4K Blu-ray. I wouldn't imagine it'd even be in double figures. So what's the point?
