Or maybe will like it regaress, I can't tell you how many old school jrpgs I've played that followed the same structure and were right around 30 hours which you played and I loved each of them. so I know people like me will like the repetition. Him liking the game does not invalidate whatever flaws the game may have, it just means somebody likes things in a different way than you do, your opinions are just that, not to be taken as truths.

I think you have a problem realizing that considering your "worships at the altar of hyperbole" statement in the preview thread.

I mean, reviews are opinions so...yes?

lol people are so negative. It's a great score especially for a genre that's hard to get great scores. My hype for playing tomorrow is as high as ever.

Also lol at chapter 1 being 20-30 minutes. We can play through that ourselves and it takes at least double that if you aren't trying to rush it.

I don't think Jason Schreier loves JRPG's. He's not a fan of the old-school stuff at all from what I can tell, especially core mechanics like grinding and turn-based battles. It may be better to say he is a fan of modern RPG's that have more of a Western flavor to them. Like I said, different strokes

To me, this sounds like a breath of fresh air among the action-based "RPG's" I see these days (and I use that term loosely). DQXI will be another, but I will have to wait for the Switch version because I just don't want to sit in front of a TV that long anymore. I am interested in what the Japanese and actual RPG fans think

Those who love Chrono Trigger, old-school FF, DQ, and such... They seem to like it

Grinding is a core mechanism now? You really don't have to in most games, especially not in DQ. Also, way to define Schreier's taste for him lol. Suikoden and Trails in the Sky don't count huh.

I'm very ready for a shorter JRPG experience. I just don't have time for the 60-80 hour stuff anymore. Hoping to find a copy today otherwise I might just go digital.

All good. I understand why people get heated and defensive. I've been counting down the days for Octopath Traveler since it was announced at the Switch reveal event, and it was crushing to play through the game and gradually realize that every chapter was going to follow the same exact pattern. I had such high hopes for this one.

No disrespect, but I'm just having a feeling you had fixed (too high) expectation before even playing this game.
And when some aspects didn't live up to your expectation, you really got crushed.
The hype chamber in this forum for this game was really unhealthy (applies not only to you obviously).

Come on guys "I don't think Jason likes JRPGS" WHAT? who cares? I love JRPG's that doesn't mean I enjoy every single one. This is a 16 bit inspired grindy role playing game ala SaGa and its sitting above 80% that seems pretty good to me.

I can 100% understand people that are disapointed in the narrative etc but that's one of the things you need to decide before you buy.

Preorder cancelled. Will wait for sub $40 sale. I had a strong taste through the demo. That's enough for me since the flavor apparently never really changes.

Yeah, he definitely has never written an entire series on old-school Final Fantasy games and espoused his love for them.

I really like this tidbit from Jeremy Parish's review at Polygon:

I love "I can see that place but how do I get there" puzzles in games. Exploration and world traversal is one of my favorite things to dig into, so I'm glad to hear there's a focus on that here.

To me, it just felt more like, "Push your character around the world until you squeeze through whatever hidden gap there is to find." Not exactly satisfying exploration elements, I felt.

I'm curious what people who have played Bravely Default/Second think about Octopath Traveler. Some of the quotes remind me of those games.

I had such high hopes for this one.

But isn't this all in all the problem in this day and age? The own expectations get's absurdly high in the year 2018, yet, Square Enix never managed to surpass their SNES and early PlayStation Era. I will not say people should calm their expectations, but there was a playable Octopath Traveler Demo last year and people should have known in what direction Octopath Traveler is going.

What's disappointing the most is, many people can't appreciate simple storytelling anymore. Calling the stories in Octopath Traveler dull and boring when Persona 5 is telling the fith time the story about a bunch of outsiders who confront their inner self is harsh. Tales of is telling the same story about friendship again and again. On the other hand, I enjoyed the writing of the Octopath Traveler prologues so far because every story is going a different route and are telling the stories of not so almighty individuals. This feels fresh for me. More fresh than summoning a fallen angel at the end who wants to destroy the whole world.

While I give them that, a final chapter like in "Live a Live" would had been sweet. It would be the cherry on the cake.

85 on MC, seems the majority of people loved it. Jason one of the few that didn't. Everyone is allowed their own opinion on a game.

I still have to play Ni no Kuni 2 and i´m a bit worried about the game, because it looks that it wasn´t really liked by the players. Whats exactly wrong with it? I was kinda happy when they brought back something similar to the Georama in Dark Cloud with the Kingdom management.
IMO the game lacks anything but charm. The graphics are nice, but the overwold realistic style clashes with the cell-shaded used in the other parts of the game. The music has 3-4 nice songs (2 of them are remixes of the first game's main theme), but there's lack of variety and quality considering that Joe Hisaishi directed the OST. The gameplay is meh: combats are a clunky Tales wannabe without any depth and with crazy enemy repetition, puzzles are bad, the top-view strategy battles are basic, and the kingdom building has no meaningful decisions, you will only wait for things to complete or do boring sidequests to obtain more citizens. The game feels really unfinished, there's 2 entire areas on the world map that are basically empty, the voice acting is really inconsistent (ala Pillars of Eternity 1), most of characters share combat skills... But the worse of all is the story. Is simplistic, has lots of plot holes, there's no weight no anything (a character is going to kill you but in 15 minutes is your new ally, for example) and the structure is fairly repetitive. And the ending sucks, it comes from nowhere and makes the game feel even more stupid.

There's no big flaws in the game, but it's really hard to think about anything great aside from the good graphics and animations (and the excellent localization, at least to Spanish).

I don't follow him closely but he talked about playing Lunar Silver Star on PC in his "PC masterrace" article this year. I don't doubt he has enough experience with classic JRPGs.

HE'S NOT A TRUE FAN

...

This thread is fucking awful but that's par the course for review threads of exclusive games, people get way too emotionally attached to these sorts of games

I played and LOVED Bravely Default but could not get into Bravely Second. I loved the Prologue demo for Octo. It's weird because I usually do enjoy long winded epic narratives in my role playing games but Octos take is refreshing for me and fits right into what I need in a game on my SWITCH right now.

Polygon's article is a good example of how the game can be extremely charming for its first few hours (the writer says he hasn't finished it all) but once you've played through all 32 chapters, the repetition really gets at you.

And, to answer a question many of you have, there is no epilogue or final chapter, despite the misinformation that was floating around. The stories do not intersect at all. Nintendo tells me there's some sort of post-game content but couldn't tell me what it was or how to unlock it, so we'll see what that turns out to be.
Do you think if you could have taken your time and played this more casually over a month like many gamers might do, then the repetition or similarity of dungeons and story beats would have felt as grueling and ruining your experience?

I talked to someone reviewing this game and he stated the exact same thing. Because of the style and perspective, often getting to a chest you can't see how to get to is not a whole lot more than rubbing against the walls until you find the path. I had the same experience in the demo as well.

Basically for me the dungeon/field design sounds like a real bummer but I'm glad the moment-to-moment gameplay is the strongest single aspect of the game.

Sad to hear about the stories not interconnected in any meaningful way.

But will still play it as the game looks fun.

The IGN review states they enjoyed it and they played for 53 hours to complete the story of Therion, Olberich, and Primrose. Maybe the enjoyment of the game all depends on which character you pick.

Story I do care about and from what I'm reading some of the stories are worth hearing here.

I actually don't mind grinding in games. I feel accomplished when im able to reach levels where I'm kicking butt.

Im a fan of old school rpgs. The battle system appears to have a lot of depth. I'm getting this.

I don't care if the Metacritic is 65 or 95, I am just not liking what I've been reading from the reviews/previews. The scores are great, but I found the demo to be painfully boring, and along with the nauseating graphics, I plan on getting this when it's on sale. It's sad that the game doesn't seem to improve or change much beyond the demo. I really wanted to get interested in this game, and followed it heavily, but it just never clicked with me.

Man, the Switch has been so disappointing with JRPGs thus far.
