I'm genuinely convinced that England's White kit is cursed - it seems that all of our best performances are in the red kit. They should make the red kit the first kit and the white the second/away kit.

I think it's ITV. Any game live on ITV is cursed.

I just remembered why third place games are so annoying. If England play really well, it''ll just piss us off even more!

Can attest luck being our side for Italy, at least in 1982. Had Roger Milla's (onside) goal against Peru counted, we would have crashed out in the group stage instead of barely escaping it since we scored more goals than Cameroon.

I think you guys got pretty luck at USA 94 too! But then actually very unlucky at the end. Roberto Baggio. :(

(wasn't there a moment in that final where the keeper fumbled a shot but it hit the post and he caught it?)

In any case there is a fair amount of luck involved for good and bad in the WC. Even Croatias run this year is kind of lucky.

Belgium must be regretting now that they didn't just draw or lose to England in that last group match. Such fine margins.

Third place matches are like fighting with a child. Winning is embarassing and hardly something to be proud of but you can't really afford to lose.

I think every worldcup champion has a bit of luck. Maybe the last time they didn't were Pele Brazil teams, and even then, who knows

And it was impressive for all three the same way, "refball" for south korea or not.

Reaching a semifinal is not easy regardless of the opposition you face. The "easier" side of the bracket for Croatia doesnt make their achievement any less remarkable than France.

Turkey in 2002 was a very stacked team, too. They have every reason to be proud of their performance there.

But it does? Doesn't mean the fans shouldn't celebrate or that if they win it's not gonna count, hell everybody will forget Croatia had an easy path.

I'm not about to act like England is a amazing team and a contender now just because they reached the semifinals after beating a James-less Colombia in penalties and Sweden.

Agree with your post but I'm quoting because of something else... there is a LIDL member with the lidl logo as avatar and now you with the Aldi logo. °Why.Gif°.
Are there Netto and REWE members with the suiting logos as avatars around?

I know. I joined first. I think the other guy was trying to be funny. I dunno *shrugs*

I know team wise Croatia are underdogs and would be new WC winners but France has such a young squad and seeing them win would be amazing. I mean I'm biased but still lol

Haven't looked at the game footage in years so I can't comment on that.

I'd also give special mention to the ref not calling a penalty against us in the dying minutes of the quarters for Mauro Tassotti's elbow on Enrique. Italy got hella lucky with that one.

we'll agree to disagree then. i don't think winning in 2002 felt any less special than in 1994 just because we had belgium and turkey on our way instead of netherlands and sweden and i dont think the swedes care that they beat saudi arabia instead of argentina like romania (same romania that lost to sweden right after)

of course if you want to say in the end "x had a harder path than y" you would be correct, but x and y reaching the semis still deserve recognition the same way. as germany demonstrated getting out of group stage is not that easy anymore, let alone winning two KO rounds

So are the English fans and media to blame for England's failure? I haven't seen a single team being hyped up this much or become a meme online. Did it put too much pressure on players?

No, and I don't know where this mentality comes from.

Literally nobody expected anything of this England team. People are literally just making this up to dogpile on them even more for some bizarre reason nobody seems to be able to explain (unless you're Fercho, who is just a racist)

If anyone is wondering why England fans are okay with this semi consider the following

1998-2016 England wasted maybe it's best ever generation of players.
Recently things got so bad between the fans and players Rooney literary criticised them as he walked off the pitch after a 0-0 draw with Algeria
Lost to Iceland (no offence to Iceland)
New manager Sam Allardyce fired after 1 game because he tried to abuse the position for his own greed (which really goes to show how little people cared at about the national team)

Now consider the last 2 years

England U17 won the world cup
England U20 won the world cup
England made it to the semis (with the youngest team at the world cup)
Kane golden boot (?)

It's no exactly a secret England have had problems for a long time (most of which are our own making) but if you can't see the progress there I don't know what to tell you.

edit: also this twitter thread

Kane is definitely getting that Golden boot. I don't see Lukaku being allowed to make it rain goals freely on Saturday.

Meh, I'll watch the first 20 mins and if the players look like they don't give a fuck/are tired and it's boring then yeah I may turn it over. Having 2 days before the game is stupid, especially after playing 120 minutes and makes it more of a no contest.

imagine how stupid Kalinic will feel if Croatia ends up actually winning the cup

"i'm too good to be a bench option from the WC winners, now i'm just the dude who left the squad before they actually did it"

Luka Modrić, World Cup winner has a nice ring to it. That man truly deserves it.
France deserves it as well but since they got them youngins, they can afford the loss this time around. A Croatia win would make this much more historic and hype!

France lost the 2016 Euro in the final in their own country not long after suffering a horrendous terrorist attack. Sports is entertainment to me but their people seem to care a lot and I think their nation needs some redemption after all that.

Croatia have already achieved a lot just by getting there.

France will be even better next WC with a hopefully new trainer and more experienced & matured players. They will dominate internationally like Spain 2008/2010 did the next few years if nothing drastic happens.

Croatia has the more experienced squad and that's what I'll always be going with in predicting finals. And I want Modric to win a WC as this is likely his last appearance.

I love Modric but it obviously just sounds funnier with Rebic.

Seems that other fans are mad that we're not angry at England or really sad but proud that they've done well? But of course we're just 'salty'? Weird shit man.

Lol you're right, it absolutely does. I also think this is probably his last WC too so going out with a bang would be truly special.

France has been through a lot no doubt and they are equally as deserving of this Cup. But I still would give it to Croatia because it will be historic.

France will have plenty of extremely good chances winning the next few WC's as the team is so young while this is the last WC for a lot of the best players in Croatia.

But at the end of the day the better team wins. We'll see!

I'm rooting for France but I'm fine with either team winning. It would be nice to have a new winner instead of the same eight teams repeating.
