I'm in the market for a new headset for the PS4 in anticipation of battlefield as well as picking up rainbow siege and I'm looking for peoples opinions on the best headphones.

I currently own a pair of turtle beach stealth 500p's that have lasted me for years (I misplaced the mic and wireless dongle) and I've loved them but I'm not sure I want to do turtle beach again if there's a better, but still affordable, headset out there. I don't need any fancy "7.1" surround sound or other gimmicky set. Just looking for good sound, good mic, preferably volume control for game and chat and reliability

Wireless or wired?

Wireless the PlayStation Platinum headset are finally a good robust set. The Pulse Elites and Golds had good quality sound and features but they always had lackluster build quality and would end up cracking. The Platinums don't have this problem.

Wired, the HyperX Cloud II.

I'm looking for suggestions too, because I have the same headset but my fat head has broken the plastic just above the ears and in the past has also broken a Gold headset in the same spot.

I've had Turtle Beach Elite 800's and I can't complain. Wireless, noise cancelling, 7.1 surround sound, tons of preset options make it my favorite headset.

Avoid anything by Sony or Turtle Beach. Astro is OK but they're overpriced. If you go wired and insist on using a gaming headset, Hyperx Alphas are the best for Xbox and PS4. Avoid the Hyper X Cloud 2. They require a USB amp to be usable, otherwise they're awful when connected to low powered devices like controllers, phones etc. The Alpha was built with low powered devices in mind.

I use the hyper x cloud IIs for ps4 and pc and I love them. Got them for 70 bucks and I would be fine paying full price for them if I had too.

The sony golds are not worth it. Mine broke after a few months and the mics are not great.

Never used turtle beach or astro so I can't say.

HyperX for sure.

Entry level wired: Cloud Stinger Core - $40
Higher end wired: Cloud II - $100
Higher end wireless: Cloud Flight - $160

Ideally it would be around $100-$150. One of the reasons I started this topic was because I recall seeing people say good things about hypers

Im definitely not looking for a set that would require a separate amp. I also prefer wireless but I'm willing to make an exception if it's a really good/affordable wired set

I've tried the HyperX Cloud Cores and they're some of my favorite headsets for gaming. The Cloud Cores and the Cloudn 2s are the same headset, the 2 just brings more goodies for about a $40-$50 price increase, which IMO isn't really worth it.

I've heard great things about the Corsair HS70 which is wireless. People also recommend the HyperX Cloud Alphas for that price.

What's your opinion on wireless? Also when you say insist upon gaming headset what do you mean? Doesn't it have to be a gaming one if I need a mic or do like Sennheiser make sets with mics?

You can make your own gaming headset easily from a good pair of headphones combined with a modmic or Boompro mic. I personally use a pair of Vmoda Crossfade Wireless headphones with a Boompro mic. It's wired for gaming and wireless when I exercise or watch movies on my Apple TV

Sony platinums here. Very slick and works wirelessly with Switch and PC too. Good sound quality but not mind blowing.

Very tidy set especially if you can pick them up at a discount.

Have the Pulse Elites since 2012. Can confirm, build quality isn't the best but sellotape can always fix that lol. Sound quality is very good for ÂŁ100, and I dare say it's much better sound quality than the Platinums.

I suppose I'll repeat the recommendations for every I need a new headset thread.

  • Don't buy a headset. You're paying more for brands, for gaming marketing, minor conveniences, and generally poor components.
  • You're much better off buying stereo headphones and a separate mic. Yes, it's wired and you have to buy them separately, but if audio quality is an important characteristic in your purchasing decision, it's well worth it.
  • Open headphones are fantastic for gaming. The perceived stage from which sounds come from is a lot wider and spacious. In gaming this means being able to separate sounds from each other. Open headphones don't isolate you from your environment, meaning hearing yourself talk sounds normal. Bass isn't usually as pronounced as with closed headphones.
  • Some recommendations for headphones include Sennheiser HD579s, HD599s, and Philips SHP9500s (if you can find them for MSRP). You don't need an amp for any of these. As for Mics, you can pick up a ModMic, or cheaper mic alternatives.
  • If you insist on a headset, the Hyper X Cloud IIs are at least based off of a decent closed-pair of headphones.

Actually I never had any issues with the Cloud 2s connected through the 3.5mm jack on the controllers. The usb soundcard included with the headset also had a firmware update to officially support 7.1 surround sound on the consoles now.

Sennheiser HD579s, HD599s, and Philips SHP9500s
Man all of these are so nice looking. I'd been looking for something with a dedicated mic but reading people in here say that its worth it to get open headphones and just pick up micmod is making me seriously consider the dive. I've always wanted a pair of Sennheiser but those Philips are clean as hell looking and I found a pair on Amazon. Do you have a favorite out of the three? It's definitely a step up (with the micmod) in price for what I preferred to spend but it seems worth it

USB connected ones higher quality than controller Bluetooth connected ones. I always recommend USB headset over controller Bluetooth for headset

The Philips SHP9500s vary in price a lot. If you can get them for under $100, I'd probably go with those. Otherwise the HD599s are a fantastic buy. These are very good headphones, and anything much better (with few exceptions) usually requires getting an amp.
