https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/07/11/technology/twitter-fake-followers.html

Twitter will begin removing tens of millions of suspicious accounts from users' followers on Thursday, signaling a major new effort to restore trust on the popular but embattled platform.

The reform takes aim at a pervasive form of social media fraud. Many users have inflated their followers on Twitter or other services with automated or fake accounts, buying the appearance of social influence to bolster their political activism, business endeavors or entertainment careers.

Twitter's decision will have an immediate impact: Beginning on Thursday, many users, including those who have bought fake followers and any others who are followed by suspicious accounts, will see their follower numbers fall. While Twitter declined to provide an exact number of affected users, the company said it would strip tens of millions of questionable accounts from users' followers. The move would reduce the total combined follower count on Twitter by about 6 percent — a substantial drop.

Was pretty funny to see people complain that bot accounts following them got canned.

Also I've been wondering, is there a limit to how many people I can put on my twitter block list?

I would have said that a year or 2 ago. But I wouldn't be shocked if the number is closer to 60 percent

I've made a couple of trash accounts for testing things/website signing up and Trump has always been in the "Click here to automatically follow 20 people" section along with a bunch of sport stars.

Same, I'll believe it when I fucking see it. Both them and Facebook have unveriably changed the course of history for the worse with thier lax approach in curbing fake accounts or manipulative foreign entities from politically swaying their users, so they'll earn no accolades from me for getting around to this so late. And unless they institute real preventative measures against these bot accounts, we're going to end up in the same fucking place by next year. Russia should also be blanket banned from twitter.

This isn't a meaningful change.

They're only removing follower counts for locked accounts. There are millions of bots that are freely posting BTC scams and QAnon garbage.

Most of Twitter's active users and impressions are bots. If they actually got rid of bots, their shares would crater. This is a PR move.

It's always so funny to see the loudmouth "inflencer" accounts get up in arms when they drop 10k followers in a day.

My block list is at half a million. It's mostly right wing bots, but I've also blocked most alt right figureheads and ancillary shitheads like Sarah Palin and Ted Nugent.

Holy moly. Thanks for answering, I mostly block random people who I'm fairly sure are just going to put negativity on my timeline if I ever see them again, pretty sure half a million is more than enough.

Interestingly, it doesn't sound like they're purging the accounts outright. Maybe they're gonna filter them from there to avoid false positives?

It was so much easier during the height of gamergate. There was an app you could use that would identify users that followed all of the main figureheads of gamergate and autoblock them (it wouldn't do anything to people just following one or two of the GG accounts).

The bonus effect of this was that it also conveniently blocked most of the russian bots that got repurposed to push trump during 2016.

With 500,000 blocked (I used scripts and CSV files, did NOT do it by hand lol) I don't see any "CNN = fake news" bullshit anymore, but new bots pop up every day, so it almost feels futile to try to block them all.

I think blocking the alt right people (Jack, Mike, Paul, Candace, you know which ones I'm talking about) is the best way to clean up your feed.

How do you wind up with half a million people you don't want following you???

I don't even have 100 people following me on Twitter, lol.

(Or do you mean just blocking things you don't want to see period....following you or not)

Both.

Blocking someone on twitter makes it slightly less convenient for them to see your tweets (they still can) and makes it much easier for you not to see theirs.

Both sides of blocking someone are useful.

Blocking people also suppresses them from your feed and search results.

I believe it blocks them from your feed completely, and the algorithm suppresses them from search results, but they still appear if they get a lot of traction (like if they're president or something).

Users who get blocked a lot get shadowbanned by Twitter, and their content gets suppressed to everyone.

Twitter is Donald Trump. They're never going to touch him until he stops drawing people to their platform as his main source of communicating with the public.

I have 84 followers. Wonder how many I'll lose in the purge. I have no idea who most of them are.

these sites need to stop using raw user number as a metric on their site. That the hugest issue they have right now. It should be based on user engagment, conversations etc. Not raw user numbers its the main reason all these bots have proliferated and they are so scared to cull shitty accounts.

How are you blocking so many users, Jesus Christ.

I block maybe 1 user a week, and that's only with diving off my feed.

I RARELY block people but that's because my feed is quite specific and I try to keep an eye on the happenings of all parts of the community.

Anyhow.

Have they started doing this yet?

They began removing them a couple hours ago. The biggest that I've seen:

@Twitter has lost 7.7 million (63 -> 55)
@LadyGaga has lost 2.3 million (79 -> 76)
@TaylorSwift13 has lost 2.3 million (85 -> 83)
@BarackObama has lost 2.1 million (103 -> 101)
@YouTube has lost 2 million (72 -> 70)
@KatyPerry has lost 1.5 million (109 -> 108)

Not sure if there's a better site to track this, but I'm using http://twopcharts.com/Twitter/dailyfollowers per user.

It's so goddamn obvious too.

Don't forget that most times they have #MilitaryMom in their profile, or some other hashtags and words that claim how patriotic and/or religious they are. Whenever I encounter these profiles I ask them to tweet one image of themselves holding a piece of paper with their username.

Have never gotten ONE person to actually confirm they are the generic stock photo in their avatar.

Folks could be super messy comparing numbers, seeing who was maybe paying for numbers
