Feels like a Netflix caliber release. Not very epic. And something is off with the fonts. Also Robbie looks like she could have played Pennywise.
The director is a first timer and has done stage only so I wouldn't expect much outside great costumes and acting. It's Saoirse so I'll watch but I wish she should would start taking more varied roles like Amy Adams has recently. Also she's definitely trying for that Oscar given she got a Vogue cover with the trailer and will be CK Raf's new perfume brand ambassador. She is very respected by her peers and critics but I think her group will try to push her more towards general audiences even though this isn't the film that will have much appeal. Better off with singles than a HR.

I'm not taking anything away from Saoirse Ronan because she is a great actress and this is clearly a movie that is sympathetic to the historical figure she is portraying.

However, I would bet that Robbie will end up being noticed for her role as well.

Mary was raised in France though so I'm hoping that her accent being a little off is intentional.

She did mention in an interview that she learned some French for the role, but, at least at this stage, it's impossible to say whether that was for something that's still in the movie or because Rourke and co. were originally leaning towards giving Mary a French accent.

In the trailer at least, Robbie was far more interesting to me than Ronan.

Yeah, but like with Orange hair and not that big. This movie has straight up lipstick red hair and heart-shaped.

Y'all never seen these?

Cate Blanchett (if you haven't seen Elizabeth, you're missing a very good movie and the defining, career-best Blanchett performance, the one that catapulted her to both stardom and great respect):

Helen Mirren:

Judi Dench:

Bette Davis:

(I may or may not have a lifelong obsession with the Elizabethan era, particularly cinematic versions of it.)

I saw the Helen Mirren one and the Blanchett one.

It's obvious that they're trying to tell this story in a different light, like Elizabeth is the antagonist?

Okay I'm going to be honest. When I first saw this thread I thought it said' Mary, Queen of Thots' and that someone was making a porno thread.

On the flip side, this actually looks pretty interesting and I'll probably give it a watch

The 1971 version of this story correctly paints Elizabeth as the antagonist and Mary as the victim of her paranoia (I recommend that version to anyone that hasn't seen it, great movie with a great cast). It could just be the tone of the trailer but it almost seems like this version of the story is taking more of a "both sides" approach by making Mary more arrogant and Elizabeth more sympathetic.

I would like to see that because Mary is painted as a complete nutball in the Mirren version.

I didn't know about the red hair and pasty skin being accurate either. Color me surprised.

This movie is right up my alley.

Sounds like a great story/movie

I stopped half way through the trailer because I don't want to know the entire plot

What's with all the big actresses doing historical costume drama in the next few months?
Oscar season I guess

Fun fact: the trial and eventual execution of Mary, Queen of Scots (oh yeah...spoilers) hinged on the discovery of a plot to kill Elizabeth and place Mary on the throne. There's a lot of codebreaking and forgery involved. Look up the Babington Plot.

They're probably aging up the actresses for the film, but I do wonder about whether they'll actually have them in their 40s when the execution happens.

Where the Fenians Sleep
At the end of the day they're portraying 500-year -old people, I highly doubt they'd be recognizably Scottish/English with the sort of accents we now think of anyhow.

Then why have her use any accent besides her natural one? And broad Scots and Scottish forms of English actually probably do sound quite a bit like 16th century dialects.

this is clearly a movie that is sympathetic to the historical figure she is portraying.

I'm not quite sure why this matters or if Mary, or any other monarch for that matter, needs much sympathy. Her son did plenty to restore her reputation, probably more than she deserved considering her position.

James heartbroken between choosing between his mother or the combined throne is one of the saddest things ever. Fucking ruthless from Elizabeth to make him choose like that.

What are you talking about? James never knew his mother, had little to do with her being deposed (which happened when he was thirteen months old), had little to do with her execution (which Elizabeth hardly needed James for), and his path was set with the Scottish reformation.

Yeah I misread some info. It wasn't that she need him to execute Mary, but I totally misread some stuff in regards to his reaction before and after Mary's execution. Thanks for correcting me.
