I'm so glad they've brought back the 10" size. I have a Surface Pro 4 i5 from 2016, has just 4GB of RAM. Would the high end model of the Go be more powerful than my one?

Fuck yes! A TV Dockable laptop that I can use as a games machine?

It won't be playing modern games, but it can play anything last gen or prior. The PC back catalogue is insane.

How easy is docking?

Well most laptops / PC's a "dockable" just plug in the hdmi cable and your done

I fit my surface pro behind the tv which is mounted on the wall, connects with any BT controller amd headset....also use it in bed etc. Not sure where this surface go fits in the picture as you still need a controller to play and the surface pro is already portable as it is

The irony is that Microsoft align their prices with other manufacturer's products that have to include the cost of a Windows license in their margins.

Here I am going through every single keyboard option on my surface tablet directly in front of you to show you that, no, there is no swype option in windows 10 on my surface Pro 3:

Hey OP, why don't you show me how to use swype on YOUR surface instead of linking me to videos that aren't you?

Have you updated to the latest version? I have this on my SP3. I think it came with the big spring Windows update.

Microsoft still selling Surface is the biggest surprise here.

Didn't even knew that.

Some of ya'll on Era really surprise me, lmao. The Surface brand generates billions of dollars for Microsoft. It is incredibly, incredibly successful. Go to any top name Electronic store and look at the Surface section.

Edit: beaten badly ;)

Maybe it's just me, but that video isn't loading. What version of Windows 10 are you running, because an option for Swype exists for me.

Yeah, I never noticed it before, but now there's a way I can use swipe gestures to type with that little phone-sized on-screen keyboard on my Surface Pro 2.

I never actually would, but it's there.

edit: It just stopped doing it and I can't get it to work anymore. Hold on...
It's working in notepad, but not in my browser.

Yes, it's the latest version/update of windows. SPDIF you aren't seeing it because it's still uploading. My phone says it'll take another 15 minutes to finish. The closest I can find to swype is the pen ink option, which isn't swype-like at all.

Short answer? No way. Windows is terrible in low spec devices. That OS is hungry.

I want to replace my laptop, is Surface a good replacement option then? I want a laptop's not tablet btw.

Haven't seen a Surface on sale here in a long time tbh I'm not into those sort of stuff.

incidentally, using a surface/brix pro as a development platform has been a secret weapon for graphics programming. Stick to OpenGL ES 3.0 spec and core profile (no extensions), and if it runs on an integrated Intel GPU, it'll run on virtually anything. GLES 3.0 still gives me about 70% of the android market and I don't have to rely on wonky extensions for like VAO support.

If you want a laptop then this isn't for you. There are tons of options out there. Been hearing good things about Dells recent gaming laptops.

I know shit about computer tech so laugh at me if anything I say is nonsense.

I have a GPD Win 2 and I've been happily emulating the majority of the PS2 and Gamecube (also Wii) library rather excellently. I haven't tried a whole lot of higher end PC stuff because that's not why I wanted the system. I wanted a portable PS2 and GC, essentially, and it has been extremely good for that.

I knew full well that I'd be willing to pay a more premium price for that. Would this cheaper Go be capable of doing the same thing at full speeds? If not, I think the Win 2 is probably more along the lines of what you're thinking of, OP, even if it's a bit more expensive.

Well, the high spec version is pretty much on par with GPD Win 2 (slower CPU aside), and from personal experience, Win 10 is a decent experience on that device. Don't go for the 4 GB version though, that one will suuuuck.

It should be a match for Win 2, pretty much.
But no built-in gamepad, so good luck with playing those PS2/GC games using a touchscreen. Not sure about the eMMC transfer speeds as well.

For others things like internet/work? Yes, is decent. 'Game changer'? Thats another story.

This thing on paper alone is stronger than switch and around a gpd2 I think. I know Gpd win 2 definitely outperform the switch a lot.
Not in the GPU front. At least not by a lot.

Is fine on my Surface 3 4GB.

Well, this particular Surface isn't for him, but the actual Surface Laptop or something like a Surface Book are great laptops. Although obviously it all depends on budget.

Depends on what do you consider games.
Recent AAA titles? Will work like shit, unless you In-Home Stream with Steam.
Older AAA titles? You should easily exceed PS360 performance.
Indie games? Most should work great.
Emulators? Anything up to PSP will work great.
Visual Novels? Hells yeah, baby. System's made for them.
You get the pros of Windows as well - full gameplay time tracking, achivement sounds if you use Steam games, proper framepacing with RTSS, AutoHotKey and Steam Input for rebinding/macros...

It's a good range of devices (some quality control issues on certain models aside) but they command a price premium and you should only get them if you think you want the convertible functionality. Otherwise you're better with something like an XPS13.

"Surface Laptop" is a damn good laptop except for only having one proper USB port. "Surface Book" is a damn good laptop but if you aren't planning on detaching the screen then you're paying a lot of money for features you don't need. "Surface Pro" is the intersection point where tablets and laptops meet, it's not truly amazing in a either category but there is no better balance out there.

All models have excellent screens, top tier windows track pads (nearly Mac level), good to excellent keyboards (Book has a 10/10 laptop kb, laptop is P. Good, Pro is surprisingly good for what it is) and they all support the pens if you're into that.

But that price tho. I'm running an sp2017, used to have a first gen Surface Book.

See, that's where it all falls apart for me. I like having everything built-in. If I have to find a way to connect a controller to the thing, at that point I might as well just use a proper laptop.

Let's knock off the driveby posts here folks.

If your only reaction in this thread is a one word answer dismissing the thread title then it's best not to post.

I really love the aesthetic of Surface devices and this one looks just as nice as the rest of them at a reasonable price. Stuff like up to PS2 emulation should be fine on it but I'm kind of stuck on this dumb idea of mine that whatever laptop I get next should at least be able to play FFXIV. This one doesn't seem to cut it.

Be careful, there are other Surface models that definitely can run it, but the price goes up a LOT from here. It's almost as if the Surface Go was some sort of mindshare trojan horse...

Depends on budget and what you want out of the laptop.

Surface has a few models: surface go in the OP, Surface Book (laptop with detachable screen), Surface Laptop and Surface Pro (tablet with attachable keyboard).

Surface Book has an option that includes dgpu and my buddy tells me it runs games like cities skylines fine.

Most are premium priced but fabulous bits of kit for the most part. I use a surface book 2 dgpu model day in and day out for work. (Standard disclaimer - I work at Microsoft , other laptops are available, Im just a big shill, blah blah!).

Surface laptop almost definitely worth a look.

not as primarily a gaming portable but looks like a decent budget device as a laptop/tablet that could run win10. I'm looking to get one mostly as a secondary pc while using it to play lower end games like VN and Steam streaming since the price is decent, but the added cost with the keyboard and pen that I'm going to be using will be pretty high at the end.

Everyone in this thread is expecting it to run Crysis when it's not meant for that. This thing can run plenty of games at medium to low settings just fine. Cmon now Era yall better than this.

I had a Surface Pro 4 for a year. Pretty sure the specs for it are still better than what the Surface Go has, but it was a snappy little machine that, as a laptop, worked great (found it too heavy and clunky to use as a tablet), and if I wasn't all that into gaming, it would have been all I needed. But ultimately I wanted to play more games, so I sold it and picked up an Acer Predator Helios 300 instead (a $1050 laptop with a GTX 1060). Would not expect much from the Surface Go if you're interested in any kind of gaming.

But for low-spec portable gaming, what really got me to stop playing the Surface was the GPD WIN. Far more portable and running games at lower resolutions and details looks a lot better on the smaller GPD screen compared to the super high-res Surface screen. Now I have a GPD WIN 2, which spec-wise is more powerful than the Surface Go (albeit pricier at $699), but it's a 3DS XL-sized handheld and far easier to take around to play stuff on. It's also still a full-on PC, so you can hook it up to a TV with HDMI-out and use controllers with it.

Regarding the Surface Go, I'd actually still be interested in it if it were priced lower. The base model is not a $400 machine...it's $500. You need that $99 surface cover to use it properly. I'd be interested in the Surface Go if they were able to get the price down to say, $300-$350 with the cover included.

I'm fairly confident it actually can run crysis and crysis 2. Crysis 1 ran on those 8" Intel atom tablets you could get for 99 dollars in 2014-15, which were similar spec ballpark to the Surface 3 possibly a bit lower.

Settings and framerate weren't shit hot, but this is a notable cpu/gpu step up from those.

Lol not with 4gb ram it won't be, also has a gimped edition of windows and a weak cpu, gpu.

If they shipped with 128gb and 6gb ram with full windows, say for 450 bucks then it would be much more compelling, right now the base model is expensive for what it offers, does not even include a keyboard ffs.
