Amazon Japan, the next octopath traveler arrivals, july 26, no arrivals (since saturday) for now in stores, nothing announced for this week, it seems the second week sales (physical) will be very low

Were Retailers not observing the exponentially growing interest in the game the weeks following the demo that they neglected to increase their orders? I mean how does this work?

How much do you think they should have ordered, and how much do you think they ordered? Do we even have any data to estimate that? How much exponential growing interest was there following the demo?

Not sure who put the sandpaper in your diaper, since clearly I asked how does all of this work in my post you had earlier quoted. Maybe once you get that sandpaper out, you'll answer the question (or ignore it now, preferably) instead of being a raging dick.

Retailers really thought Octopath was gonna flop huh.

I don't see what is wrong with being conservative, Retailers know their market.

I am answering the question by presenting those questions. These are questions retailers ask themselves as well when determining what to order. That's... how it works.

Y'all. The post wasn't fully serious. I don't think anyone thought Octopath would actually flop.
I know, i just dont think that the situation is close to being a flop, so i just wanted to comment on that :) I'm not criticizing you. But i guess you just ment that the demand was strongly underestimated, and thats fair enough =)

Right, haha. I'm really interested to see the numbers on Wednesday so we get a better idea of the shipment and sell-through. I feel like a lot of people underestimated the game since it seems to be selling out worldwide, and not just in Japan.

GEO mentions Captain Toad is treated from Switch owners as a new entry since it exceeded the original Wii U opening. (Switch version at 2nd place, 3DS version at 6th).

No hints for Octopath Traveler sales, just mention for Super Nintendo RPG nostalgia.

With the game selling out worldwide, it might not just be a case of underestimation, but a case of restocking being complicated by card production. Its the sort of stuff that hurts smaller games that get strong word of mouth because you might not be able to produce more copies of a game in smaller quantities as quickly as you need in a case like this.

I don't get it. Why questions are dumb comments? And then arrogance is good?
He just asked "how does this work?" smh

I don't know sh*t zbabo sales so all my questions could be dumb. But maybe there's more behind his post?
(not derailing just that people seem 'tense' and 'fight' for nothing... and then warnings or bans. All this is useless)

This said I'm hoping good news for Octopath in the upcoming weeks with decent legs :)

That makes sense. Hopefully the people interested in this game that haven't been able to get a copy yet are willing to wait until stock is replenished and don't just seek an alternative (granted, I don't think there are many modern alternatives for this game). I also hope the second hand market doesn't kill this game's potential.

Nintendo didn't just publish LCU, they actually produced the game and SPD staff worked on it. It's a little different from something they just pick up to publish or co-publish or distribute depending on the region. Devil's Third was the same deal, this is more in line with other Nintendo produced 3rd party games like Glory of Heracles, Culdcept, Fatal Frame, Bayonetta, etc.

Octopath is just a regional pick up. Nintendo's not actually involved in production or development. All of their other SE are in this category too (DQ games, Bravely games, TWEWY Switch, etc).

To be fair, Devil's Third is still a WiiU exclusive.
PC version, is just online part of the game.
There was interviews on the matter, and PC version was part of the arrangement.

I think Nintendo was so desperate to have WiiU exclusives that they signed bad contracts.

Is that accurate? Because if so, it would explain so much about why I freaking love that game to bits while being extremely 'meh' on LEGO games in general.

Maybe Nintendo involvment on Lego City Undercover was only for Nintendo cameos.

Someday, Japanese people will preorder third party games on Nintendo consoles. Even, with two demos to play it several months earlier.

Now u remind me of Infinite Space and how the game is unable to be restock on time and lost its momentum.

And when it is restocked, the potential buyers already moved on.

Well with digital nowadays being a option even shortages of retail copies wont harm the total sales as much as maybe in the past.

2位と6位に新作のSwitch/3DS「進め!

Google translate:
Mr. Takafumi Muto:
"Switch 'OCTOPATH TRAVELER' ranked first in this week's ranking. With the fusion of old good RPG plus evolved dot picture RPG using latest technology, the evaluation from the Super Nintendo generation to the young one is very high and there is considerable response.

New switch / 3DS Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker ranked in 2nd and 6th place. This is a ported work from the WiiU version, but I am surprised that Switch users have accepted it as a new item or the number of sales exceeding the original WiiU version in the first week. It is recommended as a portable game for easy enjoyment."

I would not be surprised if Octopath lands around 75k for first week, just have a bad feeling about this stock situation, and am not sure retailers know how to gauge a title like it.

I saw some mention that the preorders for Octopath Traveler were weak, and that that was possibly a reason why the game is so terribly out of stock at the moment. Do we actually have any indication that preorders were weak? COMG numbers weren't big (50 pts or something like that), but beyond that I don't think we have anything substantial, right?

Also, do we know how Bravely Default preorders went in comparison to octopath Traveler?

Preorders were not week, the game was headed to a 80k+ opening since the start, but with the big week-end and first impressions it is indeed possible that many decided to buy it during the week-end.

DKTF had week preorders for example and surprised a lot of people thanks to Golden Week.

If this is the case then it makes Nintendo launching Captain Toad alongside of it all the more baffling.

Octopath Traveler shipment at retailers doesn't look to be below 100k and since sell-through is high sales won't be far from there either.

Download cards sold a respectable amount and are tracked from Famitsu but not from Media Create and Amazon that had big comparatively stock is tracked from Media Create but not from Famitsu.

I doubt they shipped less than 120k copies.
I hope not. I'll be pretty disappointed tomorrow if the game is under 100k.

Is there a source to this?

Ofc there isnt.. always assumptions. They could very well be true though.. at least with SP.
Reveal close to release and no promotion what so ever. I doubt Ubisoft had too high expectations for it..

As for Wolf 2... no clue, it seems to have been doing decent enough on the e-shop at least.

Wolf 2 is undecided, too. It sold very badly in the UK, but then in Spain it sold more than half of what the PS4 version sold in 3 weeks, and double of XB1 version in 3 weeks. My bet is he's using UK to extrapolate worldwide performance again, despite ample evidence that the UK market is an outlier for Switch.

It kinda depens i think? For more niche title which target hardcore audience, sure.

For more mainstream casual audience title, it sure will affect the sales hard.

I mean why would it differ depending on the game? We just had MH:W with very high digital ratio because lack of stock during first week. That is as mainstream as you can get in Japan.

A game is aimed at an audience and not all audiences have the same means of purchase. That's why there are variations the digital tie ratio. RPGs tend to do poor digitally because they offer little after the completion which means you get people who want to sell the game right after competing it. RPGs can also have very dedicated fans, who want to get the special edition items. Neither of these things are possible with digital versions.

RPGs have short legs because once you finish it it has little value to hold on to. Monster Hunter built its entire appeal on social multiplayer. One of these titles is a way safer digital purchase.

Stock issues are lost sales only if the game was bad to the point where its word of mouth would die after two weeks. It's not the case for Octopath, so it's merely delayed sales.
