I mean I am not saying that it has sold particularly well (considering the support) but it will hit at least about the same numbers as PS3. It's going to outsell what PS3 did in 2011 and it's not like PS3 had that great sales after that

2011: 1.46 million (PS4 is still on the pace to sell at least about the same as last year which is 1.84 million. At least it's still going to sell more than those PS3 2011 numbers if nothing more)
2012: 1.25 million
2013: 0.82 million
2014: 0.45 million

PS4 also probably will still have multiple price cuts that PS3 didn't have (because it's not overengineered disaster like PS3).

How is it on track to sell as much as last year ?

The YOY lead is steadily shrinking, with 2017 still having DQ11 as a major push, while the next big title for Ps4 is KH3 in 2019.

So that means that the PS5 will launch with 0 first-party games? I'm not following this logic.

We've already seen what first party games, the most robust third party catalogue, Monster Hunter, Vita cross platform ports, a good entry price, and worldwide market dominance does for a Sony console in Japan in this day and age, and that is a platform that will be lucky to reach 10 million in Japan or the highs of a console that launched at $600 a generation earlier, and finishing this generation with zero presence in the handheld space, decreasing overall mindshare in the region at large.

PS4 had everything going for it and it still couldn't break Sony's downward trajectory as a whole in japan.
The downward trend is obvious but not even as pronounced as it should be given the absolute clusterfuck of the early PS3 years. During The PS2/PSP/PS3 era's they were much stronger overall than the PS4/Vita era and with the PS5, that number will most likely sink to Sony's absolutely lowest point in their gaming history in Japan.

If they were the core people buying PS5 we'd be looking at sub-Wii U numbers. Saying that I don't think PS5 will have any trouble because it will still have the best versions third party games, and the most robust lineup of third party games. It's also not like publishers like Square Enix won't be announcing their big games years in advance.

So, AT BEST, Sony will look at the PS5 in Japan with a plan to compensate the losses over that market with the West. That's really low, especially if we put into consideration that Sony controlled the market with the PS1 and PS2.

I'm curious on where mid budget AA Japanese games/low budget Japanese games gonna be when the PS5 launches. I doubt its gonna be sustainable especially in Japan where the PS5 is gonna just focus on AAA games.

Well, maybe the japanese developers will continue to look over the west and trying to get a middle-term between both markets, which also implies that japanese-focused games will never have the same relevance which had two or three generations below.

Yeah, because I know that some developers roll their eyes when the "Nin" syllable starts to be said.

I presume a portion of that market is simply going to die off.

The rest will be Switch/PS4/PS5 multiplatform.

Some pubs/devs may attempt an international strategy but unless they have the marketing clout to implement it, it will most likely wind up disastrously.

Personally I feel like the PS4's problem in Japan is the lack of new/fresh ideas / IPs from Japanese 3rd parties. What the PS4 largely received were sequels to established franchises that PS3 already got. Games that seemed fresh to the PS4 audience did well. Other stuff did not.

Games that did (relatively) well or better than before:
MHW - Big step forward for franchise, been forever since on a console - seemed to sell similarly to a off-year portable entry on a console
DQ11 - Popular series without a console entry in a long-time
Nier Automata - revival of a long lost series with good action, etc.
Persona 5 - One of the few growing series in JP
Bloodborne / Nioh - did ok - Bloodborne was given out for free fairly quickly, so it's hard to tell. 200K+ isn't too bad. Nioh despite only selling 150K, is still better than the vast majority of KT's efforts sales-wise from what I can tell...
Western games (like GTA, Minecraft & CoD/BF) - still fairly fresh to a Japanese audience

Games that declined:
- Pretty much everything else - which were largely retreads of old entries or somehow managed to alienate their old audience without captivating enough of a new one
- FF15 - Tried to be very different, but veered away from JP tastes
- RE7 - Same deal as FF15 here.
- Yakuza, Gundam, Warriors games milked with not much change and some are low quality
- very occasional new IPs that didn't have a good identity (mostly from Square Enix?) - World of FF did ok, I am Setsuna / Lost Sphear didn't, etc.

Nintendo has managed to reinvigorate old franchises (Zelda, Mario although this isn't really THAT different than older 3D Marios) while introducing a slate of new IPs. Splatoon (2), ARMs & 1-2 Switch have all done well, Labo has done ok, and Sushi Striker failed, but at least they're constantly trying. Switch has also been host to a couple of new JP IPs now with Mario & Rabbids and Octopath, both of which have so far done decently on Switch.

Honestly I'm trying to think of the new JP IPs on PS4. Nioh, Bloodborne (DS spinoff essentially), I am Setsuna, Lost Sphear, Granblue in the future (new to console/PS4); Spinoffs: World of FF, DQ Builders, Metal Gear Survive, and DQ Heroes. I'm happy to see Sekiro eventually.

It's important to keep in mind that Nintendo's overall numbers are shrinking too. It's just that for Nintendo it still means pretty big numbers.

So, AT BEST, Sony will look at the PS5 in Japan with a plan to compensate the losses over that market with the West. That's really low, especially if we put into consideration that Sony controlled the market with the PS1 and PS2.

Right but in the grand scheme of things it's a few million in hardware sales and a few tens of million in software sales which can be made up worldwide. Third Party support would be the object of concern for Sony and in some respects lack of confidence in the domestic market actually works in their favor.

EDIT: Code Vein is a new IP on PS4 from Bamco and Square Enix has that Front Mission spinoff/successor and the new Platinum collaboration.

Nintendo's presence in Japan is currently on the upswing this generation and their health in Japan is determined by their strength in software. At this juncture, it's looking a lot healthier than 3DS/Wii U on that front and did not require an emergency pricecut to reach its hardware numbers. It's best times are still ahead with many more options to build upon it's place in the market whereas the 3DS was boxed in the day it launched, and the Wii U was an after thought.

I still don't think this will be enough to reach PS3 numbers given the current realities of the Japanese market, but this is a valid point.... it also speaks further to Sony's steadily diminishing grasp on the Japanese market. PS3 reached those numbers with disastrous early pricing, without a mainline MH or sufficient price cuts, and Sony also had a strong regional handheld presence in that era.

PS5 is going to be all by its lonesome on release and receiving little more than Switch or cross gen ports from PS4 throughout it's early life. It's really going to be a tough sell.

I just don't see why PS4 sales would drop enough not no match PS3. It's going to sell more than PS3 did in 2011 (same year launch aligned). PS3 did see its sales fall in 2012 and even if PS4 sees the same it still have the gap it currently has to PS3. If PS5 struggles that just helps PS4 sales.

The gap between the PS3 and PS4 isn't that big (<450k) and the two system's ltds have changed leads numerous times over the years.

But the biggest reason is no one is seriously expecting another 7+ year generation. Microsoft isn't going to let Nintendo surpass their market share unchallenged and that will force Sony to respond in a timely manner. That loss of time will likely cost the PS4 a million systems.

PS5 will launch in 2020 so the same generation length as with PS3 (I will eat my hat if PS5 releases in 2019).

How is it on track to sell as much as last year ?

The YOY lead is steadily shrinking, with 2017 still having DQ11 as a major push, while the next big title for Ps4 is KH3 in 2019.

It will lose its YTD lead in summer but PS4 had pretty damn poor Q4 last year so it's not that hard to match that. Even if it doesn't it will still do more than PS3 in 2011.

Almost every japanese game is mid-low budget with very rare exceptions, we've seen the highly rated games do well oversea's, japanese third party games don't have to rely on domestic sales.

With that being said, i think building their games from the ground up for Switch and then porting them to PS4/PC is the smart play. Switch gives them the biggest audience in Japan, PS4/PC give them a huge install base in the west.

Yeah, that would be smart, but I don't think that japanese developers are smart enough to have this insight. In the end, people will just focus on mobile, leaving the japanese market in need of good games, and eventually try something on the PS ecosystem for a fanbase that isn't really there.

Well, unless that the FF VIIR shake the things that not even MHW managed to archieve. And I, as a purist FF VII fan, am pretty sure that the remake will be a lot more divisive than the recent Final Fantasies and will fail to capture both audiences, older and younger.

Talking about Monster Hunter World, did Capcom already said what they will do with their business-model of the franchise? Because I'm not sure that the west will be pleased with annual spin-offs and, looking at the game as a GaaS that they said that want to implement, it doesn't seems to take off.

This year's PS4 lineup for Q3 is worse than last years from everything we know so far

We miss Yakuza and Earth Defence Force from Japanese side but on the other hand I see western line up being better than last year. It also depends on does PS4 have price cut this fall (last year it didn't). Still even in worst case scenario it's going to sell decent bit more than PS3 did in 2011 (1.46 million).

There's no way Capcom can do annual World-like games. We may see DLC/expansion, but with how badly they've maintained engagement and the lack of World legs, it's hard to say how well that will work out next year.

Is this in Japan or North America? I swear Japan just had some restocks for Captain Toad today.
Many shop storerooms here in Japan probably aren't much bigger than your closet. Stock comes in, gets put on shelves, is sold in a day or two, and restocked. It's the way any healthy product sells.

No. I don't think the Japanese crowd are big on home consoles like we are. If the Switch wasn't a portable I'm highly doubtful it would've seen any more success than the PS4. Just look at the Vita, the thing is supposedly dead, but still selling thousands every week in Japan. That's crazy. That's its portability saving it.

Breh the psv was outsold by the PS4 in Japan of all place, you undermined your argument right there.

I think, if the PSV had exactly the same library as the PS4, it would have a good chance at being the better seller.

That said, the audiences of the Switch, Vita, and PS4 can be rather different. Switch has many more traditional, younger, and female players. Vita has a lot of RPG and VN players, and PS4 has a lot of Western, graphical seeking players.

There certainly are people who like having 'high end' home consoles and believe that to be the best/only way to game. However for the population as a whole, portability and convenience usually take priority. Vita's problem was and always has been the games.

Mate. I clearly said the Vita is supposedly DEAD, yet it's still selling in the thousands, every week. Because portable.

The PS4 isn't dead, anywhere.

That's my point.

If the Vita was a home console and dead, it wouldn't have sold as much, maybe 10s or 100s a week.

Just showing how big portability is in Japan compared to the outside.

Did you read my post fully though? The Switch has had 1-2 Switch, ARMs, Labo & Sushi Striker from Nintendo, and now Octopath + Mario & Rabbids from 3rd parties. Splatoon 2 is also a fairly new IP. This is all in about 1 year and 4 months. What I'm saying is Nintendo managed to do both, have popular sequels to old IPs and new ideas potentially to help drive more sales. PS4 sales are almost entirely driven by third parties, so it matters a lot more that third parties release the popular and eventually new software. I know the PS4 is definitely limited by being a home console in JP though.

You forgot GTS

Again that pointless and doesn't aid your argument the PS4 outsold the vita fairly quickly. The vita's sales in general in comparison to the ps4 a home console were poor. The vita never lived and it's sales currently aren't impressive even for a dead handheld.

You can compare to the ps3 at this point in it's lifetime and it's not a favourable comparison.

3.5/5 stars difficulty for YSO next week.

Many new releases but nothing really relevant, another Switch top 3.

I had a wiiu but i never played Xenoblade until the switch version, and its like one of the most incredible games that i have ever played, you think i would enjoy XBX?
It doesn't work the same way as the normal Xenoblades. There's no main character, you control an avatar, but "a" main and extremely charismatic character is there anyway : P.
It's more of a background/exploration RPG, with tons of side quests to learn about the world, the people...
The character moves much faster, jumps higher and can more or less go anywhere.
You can dash and Jump even in battle which makes it by far the most fast paced of the 3 games.
Story is like an introduction with a few extremely good chapters surounded by quick ones. Most people imagine a sequel should come at some point.
I suggest waiting for a Switch port with hopefuly a few QoL updates notably for the end game which required too much grind if you really wanted to try everything.

It has its flaws but I spent more than 400h twice on it, no regret at all.
I loved the first Xenoblade but didn't even spend half of this time on it.
Don't like the second Xenoblade that much because of blades/battle system which removes many elements I really expected to see back.

If that can help...

Vita has received more than enough software this year for maintaining a niche status at sales, and not just visual novels.

Isnt TLZ's point that Vita is selling like it is because its portable, and that it would have sold a lot less if it wasnt? I think hes right. PS Vita TV failed in comparison for example, and i'm sure not being a portable is a big factor to this.

There's no way Capcom can do annual World-like games. We may see DLC/expansion, but with how badly they've maintained engagement and the lack of World legs, it's hard to say how well that will work out next year.
How do you think Capcom could have handled it differently, and how much do you think it would have sold if they had done it like that instead?

There's nothing incredible about the Vita selling less weekly than it did last year.

Yup, it may sell a few thousand a week but it's basically "dead" in the sense that all software are selling on the low side on it and it's selling half of what it did last year.

I consider the 3DS dead too but at least it has software selling somewhat ok

I'm saying that Playstation consoles in general have long tails and selling a few thousands a week at this point in it's life for PlayStation consoles is very typical. A handheld doing this much is par for course and isn't some testament to how much more popular a handheld is.

Do we have software sales for H1 2018 for the Vita? Maybe Famitsu or Dengeki or so? I personally doubt the average sales of these 48 titles is high, probably around 5.000 or so. Of course there have been a couple of big sellers, but most of it is very niche. Good for them, but the end is near for the Vita. NIS has shipped their last Vita game and I doubt any unannounced Warriors title after Warriors Orochi 4 will come to the system.

There are still a couple of relatively big games coming, like Catherine: Full Body, Atelier Nelke, and perhaps 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim someday, but most publishers are shifting to NSW/PS4. Even Digimon, which I personally expected to go PS4 exclusive, is doing that. There's a big chance the next Super Robot Taisen will do that as well, and since Bandai Namco is completely shifting to Unreal Engine 4, it's very likely the PSV will be completely phased out after March 2019, aside from some visual novels.

How do you think Capcom could have handled it differently, and how much do you think it would have sold if they had done it like that instead?

Well a content roll out plan for transperancy would have helped, as well as actual good content at a meaningful pace. These wouldn't have impacted front-end sales but certainly tail-end and engagement. The game has very little meaningful end-game and they've failed to give it much of one either. This obviously comes down to a lack of resources as we see the PC version come together without even the new content or patches, getting kicked out the door for a release this end of year season.

By the time a G comes out, you'll have lost the vast majority of the audience. Then that brings up the question of does such a release make up for the loss of annualized releases and revenue.

I don't know Capcom strategy here, I'd say it's been pretty vapid post-release.
