Some mobile games this time because I have been playing casually while keeping a watch on my new puppy :D

nk6Yid5.png

Game #114: Mulaka
Started 6 Jul. 2018 - Completed 9 Jul. 2018
Verdict: Soulful and pretty, but a bit stiff.

This one is hard to say something about because I don't yet know what I think exactly. Whenever I think of the gameplay I feel it was nothing special or maybe even a bit boring. But when looking back at my experience, I had fun and sorta want to recommend it anyway. I think I'm just in love with the uniqueness of it. The story/theme is about Mexican indigenous people and mythology and I have never seen anything like it before. I also loved the look of it. The combat is stiff and you will see lots and lots of the same enemies, and especially the stiffness hurts the game quite a bit for me. It's still one of the most unique and soulful games I played lately. Go check it out!

Game #115: FRAMED
Started 7 Jul. 2018 - Completed 9 Jul. 2018
Verdict: Fun gameplay, uninteresting theme.

I love the type of game that FRAMED is but the story/theme just doesn't interest me the least bit. This really hurts the game for me, and something that could have been pretty much perfect just becomes something I poke a bit at randomly. It's also very easy. I dunno if there are more well produced games where you put frames in the right order to get through a scene, but if you know any then please tell me!

Game #116: Victor Vran
Started 17 Jun. 2018 - Beaten 10 Jul. 2018
Verdict: Amazing co-op ARPG.

I started playing this solo and had a great time. I was curious how the co-op felt and asked my brother to try it out with me. What a game it became! We had way more fun with this than with Diablo 3. The whole idea about outfits and weapons making up your build, and that you can switch freely was very refreshing. The different map challenges also encourage you to test out different builds and, in co-op, build combinations. The story wasn't anything that interested us but we couldn't stop giggle whenever Geralt.. I mean Doug spoke the lines with his nice voice. Also, the constant companion The Voice is just one of those types of characters I simply adore. Superb ARPG.

Game #117: Monument Valley
Started 10 Jul. 2018 - Completed 12 Jul. 2018
Verdict: Beautiful but too easy.

I was a bit disappointed with this one. It looks absolutely amazing and is worth playing due to that, but the puzzle aspect is very weak and feels more like a simple "walking sim". Maybe I'm wrong in expecting a more challenging game? Anyway, an absolutely stunning little game.

nm6itPn.png

Game #118: Ridiculous Fishing
Started 9 Jul. 2018 - Completed 12 Jul. 2018
Verdict: Ridiculously fun.

The name of this game is so good. It's a fun name by itself but it also perfectly describes the game. You're simply fishing in a ridiculous way. It's a very simple and effective game and exactly what I want a phone game to be. It's pretty, it's funny, and I loved filling out the Fishopedia.

yNvPCaq.png

Game #119: EarthBound
Started 30 Jun. 2018 - Beaten 14 Jul. 2018
Verdict: Just as good as people said.

A Summer Gaming Challenge game, and maybe the most classic of the classics I chose to play? I can't remember anyone saying anything negative about this game and I see no reason to do so either. It's a really good game with fun gameplay and amazing characters. Loved the battle system and especially the way health loss works, which is most easily compared to bleeding in modern games I guess. I wanted to talk to absolutely everyone at every opportunity since they had so much fun stuff to say. It's all very impressive and I get why this has such a special place in people's hearts.

Woo, moving has made it difficult to update yet I've somehow been able to finish a bunch of games

MAIN POST

MAY
33. Framed Collection (Switch) - 3/4 (Completed May 23, 2018)
Completed Framed 1 & Framed 2 Main Stories
ant7sIL.jpg

This largely caught my eye because Hideo Kojima loves these games. I debated counting this as two games but they're short enough that I didn't feel the need to. You're given a series of frames and need to rearrange them so that the sequence lets the protagonists progress without dying. I would often intentionally die on levels with more dynamic frames to see the unique death animations for fun. There were actually a fair amount of puzzles near the end of both games where I was stuck for a while. Originally a mobile game, and it doesn't necessarily feel substantial but I don't have many complaints about it either.

JUNE
34. Kingdom Hearts Final Mix HD (PS4) - 4/4 (Completed June 13, 2018)
Completed Main Story | 100% Trophies | Beat All Secret Bosses | Played 2x (Easy and Critical)
wfjv2qs.jpg

One of my favorite games of all time! I got very excited for KHIII after E3 and wanted to play through (most) of the series again. These are my... 7th and 8th (?) playthroughs of the game so no new insights here. It's great that they made the trophies a bit easier to get on the PS4 re-release compared to the PS3 release. KH1's changes for Final Mix are minimal compared to KH2 so I'm excited to get to that soon since I really only did the end game stuff for that Final Mix once.

35. GNOG (PSVR) - 4/4 (Completed June 14, 2018)
Completed All Puzzles | 100% Trophies
VmLVgvt.jpg

Oh my god this game is awesome! Diorama type games seem to have been the ones that have left the most impact on me in PSVR, and this game is no exception. The music is fantastic, the art direction is lovely, the puzzles are delightful and play out little stories. I tried playing this a bit in 2D as well and it was no where near as impactful to me so I definitely recommend playing this in VR if you can.

JULY
36. Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories HD (PS4) - 2/4 (Completed July 3, 2018)
Completed Main Story (Sora's Story) - Critical | Reverse/Rebirth (Riku's Story) - Critical | 80% Trophies
AhjHL8r.jpg

Another game I debated splitting in two since each campaign is pretty substantial, decided against it since it's just part of the complete experience. I remember being excited for this since I loved the GBA game back in the day. By the time this initially made its way to the US, I had already gotten rid of my PS2. When the PS3 release came out, I played it but found that the 3D conversion had made the game lose a lot of its charm. Looking at my trophies, I'm pretty sure I didn't even finish Riku's story. This time around, they made it so difficulty trophies stack so I played both on the hardest difficulty and the additional challenge made boss fights surprisingly fun. I still found endgame levels to be a complete drag though since they get bigger and I'm somewhat over-leveled. Don't know if I want to shoot for the Platinum on this since it involves a lot of grinding for random drops and maxing our your level.

37. Lumines Remastered (Switch) - 4/4 (Completed July 5, 2018)
Unlocked all Skins in Challenge Mode and VS CPU Mode | Puzzles and Missions incomplete (for now)
6KeXDAL.jpg

If you have the option, get this on Switch! HD Rumble is fantastic since it vibrates to the rhythm. At first I didn't get it and it kind of made my arms numb. After going to PS4 games and realizing that rumble is usually just 2 frequencies, the speed of HD Rumble being able to match a rhythm blew my mind. Trance mode is odd though - you use spare controllers to vibrate to the rhythm for the sake of immersion. I put 2 Joy Cons on top of my thighs while sitting down, and it just kind of felt itchy so I stopped using it. This was one of my favorite PSP games so it was nostalgic to go through these songs/skins again.

38. Absolver (PS4) - 3/4 (Completed July 7, 2018)
Completed Main Story (Became an Absolver) | 30% Trophies | <4 Hrs Multiplayer
sALpxE6.jpg

I've been eyeballing this game for a while because the combat looked pretty cool, but I also had the impression that it might have been too in-depth and difficult so it becoming free on PS+ was a nice push. The world design was pretty neat with how map segments connected, but the game is awfully short. The moveset customization is fun but I might be too dumb/lazy for it. Armor is weird in that your attacks go down a lot since most attacks are dex based. I played a bit of 1v1 and 3v3 PvP, it was fun but matchmaking took a long time and I often got put up against higher level players, even on team stuff my team was vastly under-leveled in comparison so that was annoying. I know they're working on PvE stuff so I'll probably come back to it for that since I'm not interested in the PvP.

39. The Sexy Brutale (Switch) - 2/4 (Completed July 8, 2018)
Completed Main Story | Secret Ending | Collected all 52 Cards and 9 Invitations
h9dlkuE.jpg

Another indie game I've been keeping an eye out on because a content producer I enjoy loved it -cough-JustinMcElroy-cough- You live through the same day over and over and explore a mansion and prevent murders. I had to drop this a point because it runs so poorly on the Switch, which is so rare to me. I was getting constant frame rate drops when entering rooms and segments of the mansion, which happens pretty often. Otherwise I enjoyed the gameplay loop enough, it's either just as long as it needs to be or just a bit too long depending on who you ask. It just now dawned on me that the art style is oddly similar to Wonderful 101 and I wish we had opportunities to see the characters' faces up close so we could relate with them more easily like how W101 does.

40. Scalak (iOS) - 2/4 (Completed July 11, 2018)
Completed All Puzzles
d0crrQp.jpg

Haaa, no background art here because this is honestly what the game looks like. Got bored one day and was going through the iOS app store and saw this as game of the day for $2. I'm a bit of a sucker for perspective based puzzles. I don't hate this game but it also didn't really engage me so I can't see myself recommending it to people. Finished it pretty quickly, it was neat, I'll never touch it again.

41. Sonic Mania (Switch) - 4/4 (Completed July 14, 2018)
Completed Main Story As Sonic & Tails (Sans Egg Reverie)
bsbXD0x.jpg

I'm soooo bad at Sonic games! I got stuck so often but I got better over time. The entirety of my experience with the franchise has been through the Sonic Advance games and I young so it didn't occur to me that these games are actually meant to be played with sort of a slower trial and error mentality. I don't really need to point out how fantastic this game is. Most of the levels being re-hashes of old levels didn't affect me though since I'm not as familiar with them. Many of the bosses were pretty fun and were more than just sponges, my jaw dropped often at how new gameplay mechanics kept popping up throughout the game. I can't believe there were characters from Sonic the Fighters in here! I'm definitely grabbing Sonic Mania Plus when that comes out and will run through Encore mode, putting off getting all the Chaos Emeralds for now until then too.

52. Abzû / 2h completed 13.07.18

image8.jpg

A beautiful game that ultimately ends up feeling very shallow. The swimming feels really good and i liked the atmospheric environments, despite the almost complete lack of chances for exploration. But after finishing it, i don't see what it's trying to say, if anything. Journey is the obvious and unflattering comparison here. That game had so many wonderful little moments and such a poignancy to its tale, that Abzû just feels like a poor imitation of it.

53. Gears of War Ultimate Edition / 9h50 completed 15.07.18

Gears-of-War-Xbox-One-12.jpg

For the last 10 years or so, i was thoroughly convinced that i had played the first two entries in the series. This last week disabused me of that notion. After being perplexed for the first 2 hours or so, i realized that i had actually never played this game, but just the second one instead. And maybe parts of 3, i'm not sure anymore. And what a game Gears is. This version is absolutely stunning in parts, and the art really shines with this makeover. The campaign is excellent and full with great encounter design, though the game is not really hard. The plot and characters are dumb but there's some points where it was clear it wasn't really taking itself too serious, which is pretty ok. And there aren't many mechanics more satisfying than hitting that perfect reload just in time to rain death upon a Boomer.

You got it dude, I believe in you!

Oh my god, thank you so much! This means so much to me because I keep feeling like I spend way too much time on these even though I like doing it and it's kind of therapeutic. I've been ruminating on how to improve for next year's banners since the designs get tricky sometimes, especially with more complex, usually 3D art.

Sorry if the tense bounces back and forth too much, it's late and I'm a bit lazy.

Back when I made the first one, I create a reusable template. I spend some time looking for:
- A .png of the game's logo - or I mask one out if I can't find it anywhere. If there are multiple like black, white, and colorful, I'll save all of them and choose whichever looks nice with the art. I find I usually like the white logos.
- A couple nice pieces of art I like from the game, usually the main box art, sometimes a clean magazine cover, the simpler the better. A few times I've had to use an in-game screenshot because there's no art.

I traced out a vector of the ResetEra logo in Illustrator and for the rest I did it in Photoshop.

I messed around with the canvas size for a while and landed on 700x200, just something random that looked nice. Should probably go bigger but it's a nice excuse to be lazy and hide bad details in the low resolution haha.

For the background, I created a rectangle and made the color a radial gradient. Messed with angle and scale of the gradient a bit, then I messed with color's opacity ranges and color placement.

For the art, I put it in a layer underneath the rectangle, scale and center it so the edges don't show and it looks nice. At this point I change the color of the rectangle to match something in the background of the art, more messing around until I find it looks nice. Some more recent ones I'll do one color going into another color hue or shade if it makes the art pop more.

Then I took the Resetera logo vector from earlier and created a pattern out of it on the topmost layer and erased around the center with a low flow soft brush until I liked what I saw. I probably could have used some kind of mask there but I was lazy and it worked. I mess with the opacity for the ResetEra logos for each banner since darker colors make it pop more while lighter colors hide it too much - I want it to be subtle and classy.

And at the end I place the game's logo on the top of the rectangle layer near the bottom with some room to breathe, scale it, center it, and I sometimes move the art around or scale it if it looks too busy around the logo. Sometimes I'll outright replace the art entirely which basically mean I'm redoing the whole thing just to make the logo look nice.

Now whenever I make a batch update, I'll create a copy of the .psd for a new month then delete everything that's not the template so I can save space and loading time. After that I create duplicates of the base template of the rectangle with the radial gradient for each new game I'm updating with and create folders for each game banner, turning folders' visibility on and off for whichever folder I'm working on as I go. The ResetEra logo pattern is a layer at the very top of everything and I never change the color since the white at a low opacity mixes with the background color anyways. Then I'll just systematically work through each game one at a time, placing an empty layer under the background, dragging the art in positioning it as I like, changing the color of the background, and placing the logo on top.

Hope this made sense, I didn't proofread too much and occasionally went back to add things. I typed a lot because I tried to break it down as much as I could but it's ultimately a pretty easy process since I went with a more simple design. Let me know if you have any questions!

This is a ton of work, but it pays off because it looks great. I'd do it but I'm lazy.

19. SteamWorld Dig 2 [27/03/18 - 29/06/18]
5lYOTYK.jpg

11 hours, 21 minutes. 9/10

Fantastic. I really enjoyed the original, and this is just a huge step up in pretty much every way. I need more steam in my life, so I'll probably jump into Heist pretty soon.

20. Beyond Good & Evil HD [29/06/18 - 08/07/18]
knLHaIH.png

~12 hours to Platinum. 7.5/10

Figured I should finally cross this off my list given how cool the sequel's E3 trailer was. This is a weird game. Good, though. It reminds me of games from the mid-90's in how it tries to do so many things all at once, and only some successfully. The combat is simplistic, but the levels are reasonably interesting with some cool moments here and there. I mainly just liked the overall vibe, although I wasn't the biggest fan of the shift towards the end.
Jade randomly being revealed to have superpowers in the last hour of the game is weird as hell.

21. Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle [29/06/18 - 12/08/18]
RNXkYdm.jpg

~30 hours. 8/10

A bit lacking in terms of raw strategy gameplay imo, but fun nonetheless. Rabbids were surprisingly tolerable (even enjoyable at points), and I really loved this incarnation of the Mushroom Kingdom, even if the exploration sequences did outstay their welcome at times. Rabbid Luigi is the clear mvp, and what a cool final boss.

I'll be damned, I already hit the characters limit in my second post, I guess this one would be a new part of my main post.

Main Post part 3

60. Frontlines: Fuel of War - 5 hours
Eh, it's not a terrible FPS game, but I can't say it was great either. Maybe it was something special in multiplayer, but it's dead now so I can judge only by singleplayer campaign. The story is a weird nonsense about the oil crisis when the modern world starts to collapse, riots everywhere... And western countries formed the alliance to fight with Russia/China alliance for oil fields in South Asia. Gameplay feels disconnected from the story, in briefings you see about the collapse of world economics, but during missions, you have the best gear and drive vehicles, like everything is fine. It also tells you about hard fights on Europe frontlines, but 90% of the time you spent on some brown deserts, and then you suddenly teleport to Moscow and that's it, you won the World War 3! Oh yeah, there's also a storyline about marines division that you fight for, but characters as bland as expected and this whole drama is offensive cliche parade with no creativity at all. Overall, the game is not bad and playable, but there's no real point in playing it now, it's just average outdated FPS with a bunch of interesting ideas that don't work as intended.

61. Vampyr - 30 hours
It's an unpolished, but still a great "cinematic" game with the outstanding world and environmental design. Story and the atmosphere are really good, even though the map is not very big by modern standards, it feels like a handcrafted work of art, it's a pure joy to explore it. It has this sense of decay and danger everywhere outside small safe places, and this game is always pushing you to drink blood from innocents and bring more chaos to this dying world because if you'll try to do pacifist run, combat would become really hard and require to react quickly and never get hits, or you'll be dead in a second. I can't say this game worth paying full price for it, but with a good discount, it absolutely worth your time if you love story-heavy games with a unique atmosphere and world.

62. Penumbra: Black Plague - 4 hours
Honestly, I expected more from this sequel to Penumbra: Overture. I don't mean this game is bad, but it doesn't feel like any significant progress to the previous game, more like several steps forward and backward, while remaining at the same spot in the end. First of all, I must admit this one was majorly improved in terms of storytelling, the story of Black Plague is interesting or more dynamic right from the start. The protagonist is still mostly silent, but there are more characters this time who would talk with you during your adventures. There are some good ideas and unexpected events as well that can catch you off guard. But at the same time, the gameplay itself didn't improve much and in some ways become even worse. I'm not sure why Frictional games are so obsessed with the concept of "immortal threat", but personally I found all those hide'n'seek moments very dull and not scary at all. For me, it's just an annoying obstacle on my way through the story, just sitting in dark corner and waiting while some disgusting abomination would decide to finally go away is not scary by any definition. And I also think that weapons removal actually hurt the narrative, there's the scene later in the game when you need to pull up the crate, lure mutant under it and then drop this crate on the mutant head. It's really clunky and feels forced overall, especially if you'll try to think about it when you know what exactly happened in this scene. Now imagine how much more impactful and impressive this scene could have been if you killed this mutant by your own hands and not in some out-of-place physics puzzle. Well, I heavily criticized this game now, but as I said, it's still a good game despite its flaws. The story is very good, the dark atmosphere is still in place, and there are plenty of undoubtfully great scenes like a fight with the giant worm (yep, this worm stole the show once again). It could have been better, but it was still worth playing it in my opinion, outside graphics it aged well enough and can give you a few hours of enjoyment.

63. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six® Vegas 2 - 7 hours
Jesus fucking Christ, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 is HOT GARBAGE if you playing it solo. Seriously, it was okay, junky but playable outdated console FPS, but then they suddenly to make it more "cinematic" in Act 6 and all went to shit quickly after this. I have a feeling this game was not QA tested for solo playthrough AT ALL, suddenly your crew is gone and you need to kill thousands of enemies that could easily kill you in few shots even if you equipped in best armor. And what most ridiculous is the fact that you simply CAN'T fully play it by stealth, because in some rooms once you enter enemies immediately spot you and run at you all at once. And just when I thought that they finally come to their sense in Act 7 and stopped doing this Rambo shit in the tactical game with almost instant kills, guess what happened in the final scene. Seriously, what can happen in modern military shooter made by Ubisoft? A FUCKING HELICOPTER BOSS FIGHT. SERIOUSLY?! YOU FUCKING IDIOTS, DID YOU EVEN PLAYED YOUR SHIT BEFORE SHIPPING IT TO MARKET LIKE THIS? I've heard this game is better when you playing it in the co-op, but I'm done with it, fuck it. AI is bad, level design is bad, the movement is bad, Rambo action moments like I've mentioned below is bad, story overall is bad, fucking hell I can't say what was actually good in this game. They've made it very easy to hate this game with passion and completely wipe out any positive impressions about this piece of junk.

64. Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire - 58 hours
Deadfire is an outstanding sequel that fixed most of the weak parts of original PoE and currently one of the best games I've played this year. Developers resolved most of my personal complaints about the previous game, text and dialogues now feel more natural and much easier to read thanks to great voiceacting and hyperlinks under unknown words with short lore info. Fights are faster and less limiting in terms of tools and skills you can use to achieve victory. The new setting and world are amazing, instead of another boring "medieval" fantasy we got "colonial" RPG about pirates and exploring a new world. There is more freedom in your movement around the world map, it's not just the same narrowed path between different locations, you can actually move wherever you want and feel like a true explorer, it reminded me a lot about Fallout 1-2, too bad that not many isometric RPGs are using that system nowadays. Even achievements were fixed, so no more 10 different crazy difficulty achievements that require an insane amount of time and skill to get them.
It's a great game, but unfortunately, there are a few notable problems. Text ship combat is an interesting idea, but something went wrong and it's just extremely boring to play, so every naval battle I just skipped it and tried to board an enemy ship as fast as I can. Graphics are kinda mixed bag, most of the time it looks amazing, you would pick Xoti in your team only to see those amazing dynamic reflections and shadows it casts at the environment. But at the same time, backgrounds are unacceptably lowres for anything more than 1080p, loading times are way too long even on SSD, and summoning any creature makes a game to freeze for entire 5-10 seconds. My last gripe is about ending, it's not completely terrible, but honestly feels too abrupt and leave a nasty feeling that you couldn't change anything at the end.
Difference between factions ending is quite nice, but the last hour really feels like devs were planning something bigger and epic, but simply didn't have time to finish it. Yeah, the classy Obsidian game right here. At least there's no any critical bugs or balance issues this time, in current state game is playable from the start to finish. And even though this game is great as it is, I would still recommend to wait until Definitive Edition release with all DLCs before jumping on the ship, because all future expansions are not standalone and take place before ending of the main game. I would still play stem because I'm such a slow ass player that first DLC is already released, but if I would have finished it earlier, I doubt I bothered playing them, it's a great journey but I didn't feel like I want to jump back in right away.

65. The Void - 26 hours
The Void is really a hard nut to crack, but it's totally worth it. Gameplay is honestly the weakest point of this game, but from an art perspective, it's a pure perfection. Yes, it's REALLY hard to get into it and basically requires reading a 100-page manual in order to progress any further, but it's kinda on point because this is the game about hell, suffering and struggling to survive in the world where everything is trying to kill you except a bunch of naked ladies. This is one of the weirdest and unique experiences I've ever encountered in videogames, it can be depressing, it can be erotic, it can be frightening and can scare the shit out of you, but all this surrealism remains perfectly logical (in its own way) and didn't turn out to be a convoluted mess. Listening to characters monologues and exploring the weird world of this game is a pure joy once you figure out how to properly manage resources and survive. And even if you won't figure it out, then cheats always exist so you can skip hard parts and appreciate the art without all those annoying obstacles. I can't recommend this game highly enough.

66. Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath - 8 hours
While EA with impressive dedication continues to parading around a corpse of C&C franchise, I've decided to finally play C&C3, the only game in series that I've somehow missed. And while I can't say much about original C&C3, because I dropped it somewhere after first few missions of GDI campaign, Kane's Wrath is definitely worth checking out. I'm not sure why, maybe because this expansion is fully about Brotherhood of NOD, or maybe because everyone in GDI leadership is lifeless boring dickheads, or maybe both, but I enjoyed Kane's Wrath campaign a lot more than in original game. They fixed balance and issues of C&C3, so it's actually a very decent RTS now, some additions like epic units or sub-factions are a welcome change. Live action cutscenes are great too, even though they are clearly low-budget, but Kane is just too damn good.

67. Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters Daybreak: Special Gigs - 23 hours
This game is such a huge wasted potential it's just sad to see. The whole concept of VN/RPG hybrid about ghosthunting in modern Tokyo was very intriguing, but the execution is really flawed, specifically RPG part.
First of all, the port quality is horrendous. I thought we are finally past the times when such lazy-ass PC ports were the thing, but I guess not yet. Keyboard controls are terrible and can't be rebind, the mouse is not supported at all, there are no graphical or controls settings either, button prompts are only for a gamepad, and you can exit the game only by pressing Ctrl+F4. The only way to know keyboard controls is by reading 1 page (!) manual, that highlights buttons that not used in the game and at the same time didn't mention half of the features that are in the game, like skipping cutscenes and battle animations by pressing Enter button.
Even if you play with a gamepad, that's only the beginning - this game has several weird systems, and it didn't bother to explain shit about them. For example, sometimes in dialogues you need to choose "senses" and "actions" to interact with people and objects, like combining Anger + Touch = punch, or Love + Mouth = kiss (or "you licked the wall lovingly", depends on situation). How does the game explain it? The answer is simple - it didn't. You just suddenly see 5 weird icons appear on the screen, then 5 other icons, and then you get the result that you've probably didn't intended to get. This game is just a confusing mess, I can see why most of the people would just drop it after the first try, I'm just too stubborn to give up that easily.
And honestly, at first getting through all this weirdness was worth it. VN is the best part of this game, story is great, characters are well animated, there's actual difference between choices (I can confirm that after several replays of the same story parts because of failed battles, but I'll talk about this crap in deep later) and even True End requirements are not that ridiculous and can be achieved without 100% perfect choices. You can interact with characters and even romance some of them, though it's kinda annoying that you can't clearly see how big their affection to you anywhere in the game. Storyline by its structure reminds your usual anime shows, every chapter has intro sequence, then investigation part, then battle happens and after that one of the characters says some deep thoughts and credits roll, onto the next chapter. It sounds good, but the battles part is where things get ugly.
Seriously, battles in this game are just utter disgrace. I'm not exactly sure how, but devs managed to create one of the most boring and repetitive tactical RPG I've ever experienced. The ghosthunthing part didn't bother me at first, it was weird and boring, but it didn't cause much trouble and could have been easily ignored during the first 7-8 chapters. But then ghosts become suddenly more powerful, and I had to learn the details that game didn't bother to tell me (again). And you know what? It's not just lack of proper explanation, combat in this game is simply uninspired trash. There are no depths, most of the time you trying to predict where the ghost will move next (and they usually moving completely random which makes them hard to catch, and with very strict turns limit the whole process become incredibly annoying very quick) and then "kill" them to gain loot and level up. You can set up traps, but in reality, 99% of traps in this game is pointless garbage that doesn't even work as it supposed to - charms didn't charm ghost, blocks didn't block shit. To make it even more frustrating, before every mission game set several traps on the map, but in most cases, this random layout is completely idiotic and you should replace all of them (don't forget terrible keyboard controls that makes the whole process even more "fun"). Moreover, the game is not allowing you to properly plan the battle, because it doesn't tell you which type of attack ghost have, and this can result in your whole team stuck under "Sleep" spell because you didn't equip items for "Sleep" immunity. And that also means that you need to reload the old save and redo story part before the combat from the scratch, it's not possible to change equipment or even quickly restart the battle during the combat.
The whole RPG part is fundamentally broken, whoever designed this shit should be banned from game development for the rest of his life. And did I mentioned that there can be unexpected series of battles in a row? Just imagine playing through 2 battles with several important dialogue choices, only to see in the third battle that boss is 30-40 levels stronger than you and have those "Sleep" attacks that you don't have immunity for? You can't save during the dialogues, so basically, an entire hour of your progress wasted by this FUCKING BASIC DESIGN MISTAKES STRAIGHT FROM THE 90s. Even though I liked the story and it had some really unexpected twists, I simply can't recommend this game to anyone who values his sanity and time, just thinking about how terrible and devastating combat was in this game makes me angry. Well done Arc Systems, you fucked it up!

68. The Lost Crown - 14 hours
An interesting point'n'click adventure game about the ghosthunting. It's not a flawless experience, I believe there are not the old point'n'click games without "what the heck am I suppose to do next?" moments. This game is so inconsistent in this regard, it mostly streamlined and steadily opens new locations, sometimes even skipping unnecessary transitions between different parts of the map, but annoying pixel hunting and tedious backtracking, unfortunately, are still present here. But even though there are some disappointing gameplay parts, overall it's definitely worth playing it for unique dark atmosphere and story about towns lost in time and old curses. Yeah, voice acting is kinda cheap, but the story is full of memorable moments and, surprisingly for 15 hours adventure game, not overstaying its welcome and ends exactly when it supposed to. The game can be creepy, but honestly, it's more thriller than horror, there are few scary moments but mostly it's just intense (not that I complain about that though). So, yeah, if you missed this game and don't mind kinda slow pacing, then I recommend to try it out. Just don't mind using a walkthrough and remember that some of the achievements are bugged out.

69. Grim Legends 2: Song of the Dark Swan - 4 hours
I really enjoyed the first game in Grim Legends series, and while the sequel is a good HOG, I can't say it was something special. It's just... Okay, it was worth to finish it once, but that's it. I really don't know what else to say about it, if you like this genre then play it, but I won't recommend it as entry point into HOGs or Artifex Mundi games in particular.

70. Jack Keane - 9 hours
This game left me with such a crushing disappointment, it had the potential to become at least a decent adventure game, but the execution is really flawed. Previous games from this dev - Ankh 1 & 2 - were not perfect, but I couldn't say they were terrible either, they had nice moments and didn't feel like a complete waste of time. Unfortunately, Jack Keane DOES feel like a giant waste of time, every element of this game is below mediocre. The story quickly stop making any sense and turns to a bunch of badly connected episodes, jokes feel forced and based on stupid cliche about Britain and Indian culture, they simply not funny and didn't manage to make me smile even once. Graphics looks terrible, and it's not because of an outdated engine, but because the game is full of glitches and just lazy mistakes like constant objects clipping through each other or shadows going through the walls and floors. Cutscenes and dialogues direction feels uninspired as well, for some reason game is lacking close-ups and most of the time camera showing boring overall scenes somewhere from the high point. With lack of proper direction game simply falling apart quickly after the first few chapters.
Without a good story, it becomes obvious how badly devs fucked up with gameplay and puzzles design. It's just extremely tedious and frustrating, most of the time you simply don't know what to do next, mostly because you've missed some junk in the dark corner of the background - and no, there's no button to highlight active points on the screen, so you had always trying to figure out, which objects can be interacted with and which are just a static background detail. It's incredibly frustrating, and the game simply forces you to use a walkthrough to understand what exactly are you missing. And another major problem of Jack Keane is the fact it overstays its welcome for too long, I thought it would be a short game but it's just kept going on and on and on, I barely forced myself to finish it. Maybe devs take criticism of their previous games to close to their hearts because Ankh 1-2 were fairly short 3-4 hours games, but it's really wasn't a bad thing because they ended right when they were supposed to end. Jack Keane feels like it was artificially overblown to make it twice longer, and honestly, if I knew that it would be an 8-9 hour game even with the walkthrough, I just dropped it after first chapters and didn't bother finishing it. So I can't recommend this game to anyone, even if you are a huge adventure games fan.

71. Art of Murder - FBI Confidential - 4 hours
Very mediocre point'n'click adventure game from 2008. It's... Fine to play it once if you're into the genre, I guess. I can't say I hated it, it was okay to play it to take a break from huge AAA titles, but I can't recommend it for everyone. Story is kinda dumb, sometimes it's not clear what player is supposed to do, the engine is an outdated piece of crap that supports only 1024x768 resolution and somehow manages to run like shit on modern hardware. At least there's an option to highlight all points of interest on the screen and the game is not overstaying its welcome. If you'll be able to get it dirt cheap and love this genre then you can give it a try if you really want, but honestly, it's easily skippable and you won't lose much.

72. King's Bounty: The Legend - 35 hours
This is a great turn-based tactical game, it starts really strong but unfortunately overstays it's welcome. There are too many battles (around 300-400 at very least during for one walkthrough) and they become repetitive and boring at late stages of the story. There are no skirmish battles like in HoM&M, only story campaign, and while it's very good, it's just way too long, I feel like the game should have ended at Necromancers world but it's just kept going on and on. Another problem is lack of ability to quickly replenish your armies, on normal difficulty this game is really challenging and after each battle you will suffer major losses in your units if you won't be extremely careful, but in most cases, there is limited armies supply in castles and houses where you hire your troops. This concept actually forces you to use different units depending on which one available in your current region, but it also forces the player to constantly backtrack in order to replenish his armies, which becomes really frustrating at late stages. There are also the occasional difficulty spikes, which doesn't help in making the game more fun. But despite problems I mentioned above, I still can recommend this game if you love tactical games and looking for a challenge, execution is great, graphics and world are colorful and interesting, there is a lot of dialogue and lore, and main gameplay loop is highly addictive.

73. On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode One - 5 hours
A very repetitive and linear RPG game with turn-based combat. Story and setting are interesting, some jokes were genuinely funny, but this game is so inconsistent I really can't recommend it to anyone. There's a lot of backtracking with constant "what the hell am I suppose to do next" moments, combat is kinda unique but gets boring really fast, and there are even shitty flash minigames that you need to complete few times each to progress the story. It's not worth full price, and since developers seemingly forgot about its existence then you shouldn't bother about it either. I'm still want to complete at least the second episode, but I'm not sure about the whole series.

74. Yakuza 0 - 80 hours
After years of gaming experience and literally thousands games played, there are moments when I thought that nothing would really surprise anymore. But as long as games like Yakuza 0 keep releasing, I'll keep buying and playing them, because games like this are the reason why I enjoying gaming so much. Yakuza 0 is amazing on so many levels it really hard to describe it, this game is simply amazing and did almost everything right. Story is incredibly well written and dramatic, fights are slick and satisfying, openworld is very compact but at the same time full of different activities and pure joy to explore, music and sound are out of their league and mind-blowingly great. This game is living classic, a definition of fun, there is so much content it would be enough for 10 modern AAA sandboxes, it's amazing to see such beefy game with no bullshit attached in the current market. It's not 100% perfect though, I'd say 98-99% perfect - lack of autosaves and ability to save everywhere anytime is kinda baffling, but it easy to deal with it when there is so much good stuff in this game. Also, there are tons of mini-games, which is great, but if you are aiming for 100% completion that could be a problem because you probably won't like them all and it would be painful to complete everything. Regardless, Yakuza 0 is one of the rare games that absolutely worth even its full price, if still haven't played it you miss out one of the best games ever made.

Up to 48. With my summer holiday from work starting in less than a week I might actually have this challenge beat with MONTHS to spare, something I never would have thought I'd manage at the start of the year.

Amazing how something small like this thread has actually motivated me to finish games that traditionally I would have left to rot an hour or two in.

Current List

Some games I'm close to finishing or intend to beat soon:

Sonic 3D Blast Director's Cut (Been meaning to try this for ages since it was remastered by the original dev, was just reminded by another user in this thread)
Life is Strange: Before the Storm (Just need an evening to sit down with my partner to wrap it up)
Rez Infinite (I've beaten it countless times but have a few trophies to mop up to wrap it up)
Lumines Remastered (Keep falling short on looping Endless Mode twice by playing too aggressively - the game does something to my brain that makes me think SCORE, SCORE, SCORE, when realistically I just need to calm it a bit to grab this final achievement)
Miles and Kilo (About half way through this really sweet runner - great to play with background noise like a podcast / mindless TV show)

40. Super Mario RPG - 18/07/2018

This game rocks so hard, though I unfortunately spoiled it for myself a little by using a guide to optimize my stat growth and making my characters overpowered. I constantly waver between whether this or Thousand Year Door is the better game and I think I put the nail in the coffin on that one, it's Super Mario RPG.

35. Resident Evil 7 DLC - PS4
Completed 7/18/18
Score - 6/10

This is the first time I have ever purchased a season pass for a game...and it didn't leave the best impression. I am glad I bought it on a PS sale recently and didn't pay a lot for it. Overall there was some good and some bad. I was really only interested in the story content and didn't mess with Nightmare/Ethan Must Die/Jacks Birthday

Banned Footage Vol 1: Bedroom: I really enjoyed this one. It was interesting to solve the puzzles and put everything back so that you weren't caught leaving the bed. Totally worth playing but pretty short. I probably beat it in 30 mins.

Banned Footage Vol 2: 21 : Basically Saw+Blackjack. I enjoyed this, while super short, it was interesting and showed more background into other victims.
Banned Footage Vol 2: Daughters: Really enjoyed this one as well. It was basically a short stealth version of the opening game.

Not a Hero: I enjoyed this for what it was. I liked that it wasn't super action packed and felt it was a nice addition to the end of the game.
End of Zoe: I was excited about this one...but I hated it. The whole thing was just ridiculous. When I heard someone from the P.T. team was helping with this I was excited. I assumed it was about Zoe fighting her way to safety. I also feel like they ruined Jack's ending with how this one ended. Meh. What a misstep.

I guess I enjoyed Banned Footage the most but that was super short. Maybe an hour in total. Hard to completely recommend the DLC unless it's super cheap on sale.

Updated main post -
https://www.resetera.com/posts/3590985/

I know it's asked if we can be a little verbose and not just list, but I abbreviated due to a long update since I haven't had a chance to post recently due to health reasons, etc - sorry.

33. Undertale (Vita)
Rating: 7/10

Unfortunately not a game that I enjoyed as much as others.

34. Another World (Vita)
Rating: 5/10
A game I wanted to play back in the SNES days but just now was able to. Glad I did it, but it does not hold up well.

35. State of Decay 2 (XB1)
Rating: 8/10

I loved the first SoD and this was more of that. I don't think it really expanded too much on the game structure, and in fact I actually like the mission/story structure of the first game better. Still a great game though. Either all the reports of how buggy it is (was?) is overblown or I just got lucky

36. Streets of Rage (XB1)
Rating: 7/10

Classic 16-bit side scrolling beat-em-up.

37. Undead Nightmare (XB1)
Rating: 8/10

I'm not the biggest RDR fan, but I still really enjoyed this expansion. Has some fun gameplay mechanics regarding ammunition

38. Shinobi III (XB1)
Rating: 9/10

I never had a chance to play this on the Genesis. Really fun game that holds up well

39. PUBG (XB1)
Rating: 7/10

While there is no ending to this game, I've put enough hours in it to feel I got my money's worth and finally got a chicken dinner. Frankly I think the game is a bit overrated IMO (Fortnite too)

40. Vanquish (XB1)
Rating: 8/10

Not the biggest Platinum games fan, but this game was really fun. The story was LOL, but the core gameplay was fun and a nice romp to play through

41. Hollow Knight (Switch)
Rating: 9.5/10

Amazing game. This board has talked a lot about this game so not much to add. It's the best Metroidvania in a long time (supplanting Ori this gen for me). It's probably my favorite game this year so far edging out God of War

42. Rage (XB1)
Rating: 8/10

Fun FPS, reminded me a lot of a Borderlands vibe tbh. (minus the loot aspect)

Down to my final 10 games for the year. Really want to finish out some of the RPGs in my backlog.

Currently playing:
Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion
Persona 4 Golden

Got the normal ending, quite enjoyed it for the most part, good gameplay and soundtrack too. The story was quite good too and I really liked the characters throughout.

Game 29 - Minecraft: Story Mode S2 (PS4) - ~12 hours - 1/5

Generally more of the same coming from the first season. Not really a fan still but I've played almost all Telltale games now, I guess.

ss9dPPF.png

Game 30 – LA Noire Remastered (PS4) – 32 hours, 21 minutes – 2/5

I really liked the setting and story at first but after a bit the story goes downhill never to climb back up to the same heights. Also the gameplay while mostly serviceable is nowhere good enough to carry a game of this length. Things could've been trimmed by up to 10 hours and the pacing would've benefited heavily.

I'm glad I gave this another try but it's still really not for me.

Game 31 – Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft (PC) – 14 hours, 14 minutes – 4/5

More tomb raiding for me. 60/59 secrets and the secret level are finished.

I can see why this one is kinda the black sheep of the original trilogy but I love it a lot. Yeah some of the level design is ridiculous and just ruthless to a fault but playing on PC thankfully gets around this. This has some of my absolute favorite Tomb Raider levels (Madubu Gorge and Lost City of Tinnos especially) even if some of the rest are among the worst. I appreciate the variety in locations here and it's been a treat before I get to The Last Revelation as that's primarily in Egypt.

Game 32 – Prey (PS4) – 27 hours, 22 minutes – 4/5

Bethesda was really on a roll in 2017 publishing this and The Evil Within 2. Probably my second/third favorite games of 2017 behind Yakuza 0.

So glad I gave this one another go. Having originally really disliked this I decided to come back after really enjoying Deus Ex and seeing comparisons between the two games. At times this felt like a baby of Deus Ex and SOMA (probably the 2 favorite new games I've played this year until now) so it was clearly up my alley. I just loved exploring the ship, choosing my own way to go about things, and just immersing myself. I sometimes struggle to pay attention or fully get into media but that was not the case here.

Things did falter a bit in the last couple hours for me as enemy placement became notably heavier and when some glitches popped up but it wasn't enough to do much damage. Definitely going to try to snatch this with Mooncrash on PC sometime soon after I send this back to Gamefly.

Game 33 – The Blackwell Legacy (PC) – 1 hour, 28 minutes – 4/5

Starting up a series replay so I can go through these in tandem with a friend. I absolutely love these Wadjet Eye games but especially ones with more grounded settings. The Shivah and this series are so good at building up a lot of atmosphere and emotion with very little.

If you have any interest in point and click games and can deal with pixel graphics I 100% rec this to you. During sales these games end up really cheap so it isn't a hard sell.

41. Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion - 21/07/2018

A huge improvement over the lackluster Hero Mode of Splatoon 2. Octo Expansion's creative challenges, tough as nails difficulty, awesome soundtrack and genuinely dark and oppressive atmosphere make it feel like what Splatoon 2 should have been to begin with.

21. Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom (PS4, 2018/06/16, 68 hours)

This sequel is as delightful as its predecessor, but offers a slightly different JRPG experience. The battles are realtime fighting now, frantic and busy. The RPG got extended with kingdom building, economics, resource and citizen management. Being efficient and having "the machine" firing on all cylinders is a meta game in itself. The gains from your kingdom are fueling your characters' development and skills. Running a tight operation can render the whole game very easy and breezy. The story could be straight from a classic Ghibli movie, many of designs and tone close to Mononoke, Laputa, etc. I've enjoyed Ni no Kuni II a lot. My only nitpicks are the lack of enemy variation and overused soundtrack loops.

22. Magic Knight Grand Charion (PS4, 2018/06/17, 0.5 hours)

Little Witch Academia the SHMUP? I'm not completely up to speed if this is a promo of sorts, but saw it being free on PSN. It's surprisingly short and basic with only 3 stages and 3 boss fights (first person mecha boxing!). I've 1CC'd this after my second try. The anime sound bites and interludes were nice, but the overall "game" is nothing to write home about.

23. Monolith (Steam, 2018/06/30, 30 hours)

Monolith is a masterclass in rogue-lite dungeon crawling. Gameplay, twinstick shooting, variation, spritework, soundtrack, all as polished as it gets. It's so much fun and addicting, "one more run", then you're still up at 3AM with bloodshot eyes. Update: the boss I've cleared after 11.2 hours wasn't the final boss. There's more, there's always more. Now 30 hours in, I've defeated another boss and a bunch of new modes unlocked. Who knows how deep this rabbit hole goes.

24. Monument Valley 2 (Android, 2018/07/21, 1-2 hours)

The M.C. Escher puzzle journey continues with a mother/daughter spin. The game isn't very challenging and more on the relaxing end of the spectrum. The art, charm, music, everything seems to be there to provide a delightful break from the real life horrors surrounding the player's phone.

54. Assassins Creed Origins - PS4 - 7/21 - 62 hours: Finished the main campaign and it's the best Assassins Creed game I've played. The Crocodile main quest line is one of the best quest lines I've ever played and it had me feeling the whole range of the emotional spectrum. I'm now day 1 for AC Odyssey and the dlc's are next.

55. Assassins Creed Origins: The Hidden Ones - PS4 - 7/25 - 10 hours: Really good piece of dlc. Not sure if it was the same in the base game, but the clipping into the mountains was really noticeable here and a big direction. Aside from that I really enjoyed the dlc and Bayek is so well voiced.

56. Assassins Creed Origins: Curse of the Pharaohs - PS4 - 7/28 - 16 hours: Didn't enjoy it as much as the Hidden Ones dlc, but still a solid dlc. Really enjoyed the afterlife sections. They were all so well done.

57. Banner Saga 3 - PS4 - 7/29 - 9 1/2 hours: Fitting end to 1 of the best recent trilogy's in video games. The OST is so good and matches the bleakness of the world. Gameplay wise not much changed from the 1st two games, but that's a good thing since why fix what isn't broken.

10. Megaman Legends 2 -- PSX -- 3rd May -- 13h -- ★★★☆☆
While more ambitious in terms of scope and variety, I found Legends 2 to be less enjoyable than its predecessor. Some parts were frustratingly difficult (Birdbots on Nino Island), others parts were just dull. I don't know who thought it was a good idea to have an entire underwater dungeon with slow-motion movement. Honestly, I feel like Capcom rushed this one out. Lots of little things like the transitions between rooms are slightly jarring and damage the experience. Oh well, the visuals, characters and cutscenes are still charming Saturday Morning cartoon fun.

11. Resident Evil 5 -- PS4 -- 19th May -- 12h -- ★★★☆☆
Played this in splitscreen coop mode and it was a rollercoaster. Throughout each level they throw many different scenarios at you that force you to communicate and coordinate. There's great enemy variety and a lot of incentive to upgrade your kit. Really good fun. Well, until you get to a boss fight. My word are these are some of the worst boss fights I've ever seen. This is truly a malignant side-effect of Capcom's obsession with western games back then. I'd give this game a 5 stars for the regular campaign and 1 star for those truly awful bosses. Oh, actually fuck that rotating elevator section too. Would replay though.

12. Hotel Dusk: Room 215 -- NDS -- 21st May -- 15h -- ★★★★☆
Strong Raymond Chandler vibes in this one: surly yet likeable protagonist, criminals large and small and a real humdinger of a mystery tying everything together. Despite this, it doesn't come across as derivative. It has solid character writing with plenty of hilarious dialogue and tense exchanges. Louis is best barkeep. The animated hand-drawn graphite pencil art-style ties in well with the importance of the protagonist's notebook. The music is a perfect fit for the genre. This game has atmosphere in spades. Pity about all the tiresome point-and-click baggage. Hotel Dusk has it's share of obtuse puzzles and frantic backtracking until you trigger a cutscene.

13. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 -- Switch -- 15th June -- 121h -- ★★★★☆
It feels like a long time since a videogame last took me on an adventure like this. I was hooked from the opening few minutes and was never really disappointed. The characters are great, the locations are incredible, the music is often deeply affecting. The plot was admittedly slapdash with some inconsistent antagonist motivations, but the emotional plot points all felt coherent and hit home every time. I loved Rex for a protagonist, he's a good northern lad. Nia and him have a great dynamic too. Honestly, I really grew to like all of the party characters. Yes, even Tora.

The combat system starts painfully slow but becomes engaging for a while before becoming utterly broken near the end. Gameplay-wise, this game suffers from the usual Monolith Soft flaw of having too many damn systems and a ui that's too shitty to keep a handle on it all. Unlike Xenoblade Chronicles 1 though, the progression systems didn't neatly tie in to each other which was slightly disappointing. Other irritations include an overly complicated combat system and dull-ass side quests.

All things considered, by the time I defeated the final boss and watched the credits I knew I wanted to spend longer in that world. I played about 15 more hours of blade pachinko and filler side quests (hello, Dahlia's blade quest) which left a slightly sour taste in my mouth. So, ultimately I don't feel like this is a 5 star game for the ages for me (like XC1). For what it's worth though, I fucking loved this game. Even if the character designs are hilariously inconsistent with the characterisation.

14. Chrono Trigger -- NDS -- 17th July -- 22.5h -- ★★★★★
A replay for me. Chrono Trigger is a marvel of the medium. It kicks off with a pretty chill boy-meets-girl setup at a fair until a science-project gone bad hurtles the protagonists into a roughly 20 hour adventure that just doesn't let up the momentum. These geniuses at Squaresoft solved the goddamn jrpg problem over two decades ago and it boggle the mind that people still regress to pre-Chrono Trigger rpg design. No random encounters, positional based attacks, multi-character combos. This stuff should be standard for all turn-based rpg's released after the year 1995.

15. Hollow Knight -- Switch -- 13th August -- 45h -- ★★★★★
One 107% run and one (failed) attempt at a 5 hour speedrun. The cutest horror game I've played. The setting is engrossing. I've had a few people end up watching me play Hollow Knight for ages who've commented on how good it is to spectate and how relaxing the music is. Hollow Knight wears its influences plainly. It takes From Software's 3-dimensional reimagining of the Meteroidvania and returns it to 2D, bringing a level of mechanical precision that the sub-genre never had before. I'm going to enjoy replaying this one for a long time.

37. Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn (NSW)
Beaten 6/15/18, 3 hours

Absolute trash fire of a game. It didn't even manage to be funny, which was the minimum I was hoping to eke out of playing it. At least it was free.

38. The House in Fata Morgana (PC)
Beaten 6/16/18, 28 hours

Finally got around to beating this. While I dont love Fata Morgana as much as some people on here, I definitely got a lot of enjoyment out of it - the game is well written, and the plot was gripping. The biggest problem I had with it was that certain sections of dialogue felt too drawn out - too many words to state a simple point. But definitely well worth the money for VN fans.

39. Battlefield 1 - PC (single player only)
Beaten 6/17/18, 8 hours

I bought this and Titanfall 2 in a discounted two-pack, purely for the single player content (I don't play MP milshooters anymore). What a huge fucking gulf between those two games, I cant even. BF1's campaign is dry as hell, and I even fell asleep once during some of the earlier missions. Things get better towards the end, including a nice mini-open world section, but it's too little too late sadly.

40. New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS)
Beaten 6/23/18, 4 hours 17 minutes

I had a pretty good amount of fun playing through NSMB2, but I felt no motivation whatsoever to keep playing it after the credits rolled. The game wasn't very good at keeping me motivated to find stuff, something the 3D Mario games (esp. Odyssey) were very good at. Perhaps I just got into it too late.

41. Metropolis: Lux Obscura - PC
Beaten 7/6/18, 56 minutes

Drawn in by the super sick art, repulsed by the badly done match three gameplay. Guys, its match three, how could you screw this up? The writing is also horrible, and the theoretical story choices don't add up to much.

42. Big Action Mega Fight - PC
Beaten 7/6/18, 2 hours
★★

A competently done Streets of Rage clone that has a strange "mobile game feel". The systems and fighting are good, but it gets a little too repetitive despite the developer's best efforts to mix things up.

43. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon - NSW
Beaten 7/8/18, 5+ hours (4pt: Standard, Zangetsu solo, Nightmare, Ultimate)

I wasnt expecting much out of this, as I'm not a super big fan of ClassicVania... came strictly to get a taste of what IntiCreates was cooking up with mainline Bloodstained. Boy, was I wrong - Inti has fucking knocked it out of the park with this, a phenomenal old school platformer with plenty of replay value. The Yamane soundtrack is likewise outstanding. An absolute steal for 10 bucks.

44. Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite - PC
Beaten 7/8/18, 4.8 hours (story mode, arcade mode x2)
★★

Successfully avoided this game for months. Saw Infinity War in the theater, had an insatiable jones to play something infinity war related, bought a physical copy of this in a Marvel fueled haze.

What a pile of shit! The feel of the game is just off compared to UMVC3, the characters look horrendous, and the general UI is just terrible, bargain basement crud. I'm just glad I was able to stop myself from buying the season pass just to play as Widow and Panther.

45. Cibele - PC
Beaten 7/8/18, 54 minutes
★★★

Solid narrative based game, albeit a bit predictable - you pretty much know how its going to end from the jump. There's a little suspension of disbelief involved, selling the in-game MMO as something people would actually want to spend time playing.

46. The Blackwell Legacy - PC
7/9/18, 2 hours
★★★★

The pleasant surprise of the year! The first Wadjet Eye adventure game Ive ever played, and it certainly wont be the last. Nicely voice acted, and interesting all throughout - I swear I'll play through the entire Blackwell quintology before the year ends.

30 hours into Octopath Traveler, which is messing with my pace. I should be knocking that off in a couple more weeks.

75. DuckTales Remastered

A nice little platformer but can get pretty tough on Normal difficulty. Actually the difficulty was a mixed bag, as at least one stage had me on edge with its platforming but it had an easy boss (Mines). I really need to better learn enemy patterns sometimes :V

6. Regency Solitaire (PC, 2015) - 9:54
Completed the campaign on Normal difficulty.

I am so far from completing the challenge this year that it's not even clear to my why I'm still posting, as it's basically just a series of game reviews now. But hey, old habits die hard.

Thanks mostly to work, Pokemon Go and Kittens Game, I've taken an extended sabbatical from completing video games. Regency Solitaire found its way into my play log for two reasons: first, I got a Steam coupon for users of Faerie Solitaire, which is a really solid "solitaire with a twist" entry in a slowly growing genre; and second, it was really easy to play while keeping an eye on other things, like Kittens Game. I made some assumptions that didn't pan out, mainly that Regency Solitaire would live up to a) the user reviews on Steam and b) the implicit recommendation for people who liked Faerie Solitaire. Unfortunately, it really doesn't.

A lot of reviews focus on the setting and story of the game, which follows a young lady with aspirations named Bella in a Jane Austen-esque setting. She meets a man of high social standing at a ball, hits it off with him, and then despairs because her own family's stature has declined on account of her brother's enormous gambling debts. The debtor just so happens to be the family's neighbour, who has designs on our fair protagonist. And so the story proceeds from there, as Bella tries to reclaim her family's standing and good fortune. Oh, and I guess there's a solitaire game involved.

The story and characters are fine. Nothing exciting or unexpected happens in any way. Suffice it to say, Bella goes through some trials and tribulations, but eventually order is restored and everyone is put in their rightful place, with Bella's being at the side of her chosen man. But it's not unenjoyable, exactly. The real problem is in the solitaire, which lends itself heavily to grinding the same rounds over and over again in the pursuit of goals that start to feel almost at odds with the level design (so to speak).

When you think of vanilla solitaire, you probably think of several columns of cards placed face down, with the top card turned over to show its face. You then take cards from a draw pile and attempt to make chains of cards. The card you pull off the draw pile can chain with any of the face-up cards, of which you have many options, and you proceed from there. Most of the recent trendy solitaire games don't really mess with this formula (Faerie Solitaire, Solitairica, etc.). Regency Solitaire, on the other hand, delights in changing the basic layout of the cards to create interesting patterns or make the interplay between cards more complex. Instead of neat columns, you might have cards that interleave with one another, such that in order to expose a card, you might have to remove the two cards covering it, instead of the traditional one. (Taipei Solitaire on older versions of Windows worked this way to an extent, though the layouts were fairly uniform.)

That's fine and all, except that two things end up happening a lot. First, later levels delight in making the exposed cards hard to read at a glance. They're often turned at odd angles that require you to tilt your head to figure out, for example. The other thing the game does is reveal a ton of cards that can't actually be cleared yet, as they're deeper in the pile, but nonetheless show their faces. The difference between face-up cards you can remove and face-up cards you can't is very subtle, and it leads to a lot of missed chains (which the game will helpfully poke you about after you make a mistake) or frustration because of a card that is almost but not quite completely exposed, and thus cannot be used to continue a chain. I get the original idea behind this mechanic--revealing more cards lets you make easier tactical decisions--but in practice it obfuscates as much as it lets you plan ahead.

The second issue is that it's very easy to run down your exposed face cards to just one or two options, meaning you'll often pull five or even ten cards in a row that you can't do anything with because there's no card to chain off of. This makes for fairly dull and grinding gameplay; there's no interesting decisions to make besides "do I want to use some wildcards here" or "do I want to use my special abilities here," neither of which are all that helpful much of the time because of how the board layouts work. Oftentimes you'll see a board that's essentially impossible to clear, which means your only options are to take the loss and move on or replay the entire round with new cards. Usually you end up replaying the same hand over and over, especially if you've used up a lot of wildcards and need to farm fresh ones.

The goals in each chapter of the game don't help with this, either. Simple goals like getting a minimum number of stars per chapter are fine, but when the game starts to ask you to get a certain multiplier or chain length, it becomes annoying rather quickly, since often the only way to do either of those things is to use wildcards as much as possible to continue chains. You often feel like you're not getting any help at all from the board, which delights in hiding the cards you need behind areas you cannot access anytime soon because of certain restrictions--say, a card that requires you to find a key to unlock, or another card that needs you to clear a certain number of face cards to remove. The delight you feel from making a particularly long chain almost never happens in Regency Solitaire; instead you often clear boards by making chains of two or three cards at most, chipping away at the board until eventually everything is removed.

Regency Solitaire was a bit of a disappointment for me. I recognize the labour of love that went into making it, and I think it's maybe less a matter of the game being badly designed and more that its design goals don't mesh well with what I want a solitaire game to be. Given its Steam reviews, it's clear the game has clicked with other people, and given its relatively low price it's still worth a look-see if you're intrigued by the game and have already played the other more obvious entries like Faerie Solitaire.

Holy crap this is one of the most genuinely delightful games I've ever played. Also those puzzles are fantastic.

https://www.resetera.com/threads/52-games-1-year-2018.13773/page-2#post-2735063

onward to part II:

55) Mega Man X - Mega Man X has probably some of the tightest and best design I have ever seen in a game and remains incredible fun, memorable, and important. Having revisited it for probably the 50th time in my life with this most recent playthrough (and coming off a lot of playing 20XX in anticipation), I find myself craving a little more speed and complexity. Still would be comfortable calling it a 10/10. Unlike I think most X series fans, I really do appreciate the changes and complexity that was added to the series both mechanically as well as in terms of story and options. Original X is amazing still, but I think my preferences may have shifted over the years to appreciate the continued development and darker feeling that X2 has, the options that X4 has, and the bizarre time mechanic built into X5. Not sure whether I will still consider X1 to be the pinnacle of the series after I run through both X Legacy Collections. It is undoubtedly a classic and probably the game that I have the most love for (maybe in all of video games), but at the same time it feels so simple. I will see whether X2, X4, or even X8 may stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the original.
maxresdefault.jpg

56) Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle - Donkey Kong Adventure - A short and sweet DLC that doesn't overstay its welcome and is probably a better package overall than the main game. It felt focused, the puzzles were fun, and the change to the gameplay that's introduced through Donkey Kong as a playable character makes a world of difference. I love it!
1973600.jpg

57) Sonic Mania Plus - Did my final playthrough for a long time of this game with Ray the Flying Squirrel, who is a super fun little guy to play as. Managed to do a lot more exploration with him because of the flying ability, so I got all the chaos emeralds very early in the run. This continues to be the best Sonic game ever made.
maxresdefault.jpg

August:
58) 20XX - Fantastic rougelike that plays like a super tight and fast Mega Man X game. It took me several runs to finally get a seed that worked for me, but I am so proud I finally beat this awesome game. It's a total blast and I couldn't recommend it more highly.
20xx-listing-thumb-01-ps4-us-11dec17

59) Mega Man X2 - Well, I think I may actually like this more than Mega Man X! They're at least equivalent to me in every salient category with the level design being a marked improvement having greater use of verticality and unique gimmicks that give each stage a bit more flare than just "ice level, jungle level, factory level, etc." The upgrades feel a bit more substantial this time and having the dash from the start (and the air dash later!) means I'm not just automatically starting with Chill Penguin, but I have enough maneuverability to choose any level from the outset. The X-Hunters add a cool secondary objective to the main game as well. Overall, X2 iterates on X1 in meaningful ways and I love it to pieces. Perfect game.
SI_WiiUVC_MegaManX2_image1600w.jpg

60) Devil May Cry - This game has aged like milk. I can see how maybe in 2002 it felt fast, revolutionary, and exciting. In the modern context though this game does not hold a candle to Bayonetta 2 or Metal Gear Rising. I had very little fun with it and would not recommend the original DMC to anybody. It's lame.
1*ug9oQdn9tmOdimuQcHBxGw.png

61) Devil May Cry 2 - This is without a doubt the most joyless experience I have had in gaming all year. Everything about its presentation, story, level design, gameplay, character development, and so on were abysmal. The game is ugly as hell, plays far worse and more repetitively than the original, and any of the charm present in the first one is completely sucked out of this. I finished the game in just over three hours, which at least was somewhat mercifully short. It felt like 30 hours. I will never, ever play this godforsaken game ever again. I played 10 minutes of Devil May Cry 3 this morning and the first chapter alone was better than anything in this game by far. Don't do this to yourselves.
Devil%2BMay%2BCry%2B2%2B2.jpg

62) Cuphead - I took a quick break from playing terrible games to play the end of Cuphead in co-op with my friend. While I think co-op may have been more difficult than beating it solo last year, I had a blast with Cuphead all the same. It's definitely among the finest 2D action games of the last decade and I wish it were available on more platforms, but it's beautiful and wonderful all the same.

maxresdefault.jpg

63) Mega Man X3 - The least great game in the SNES X trilogy, but I grew to like it over the course of a frustrating 5-hour playthrough. Went for 100% completion (Gold Armor, but let Zero live) and found it to be extremely tedious to get all 8 hearts, 4 subtanks, 4 Ride Armors, all main Armor upgrades (but none of the special chips), the Gold Armor, and defeating Bit/Byte/Vile with all of their weaknesses. This isn't a bad game--the graphics are really nice, it's using a phenomenal engine, and some of the tunes are well composed. On the other hand, the stages feel way too large and sometimes empty. Tighter design and more restraint would have done wonders for X3. As it stands, it is in the bottom half of Mega Man X games.
Mega-Man-X3-MSU-1-Audio-Patch.jpg

64) Devil May Cry 3 - I did not care for the first two DMC games, however this one is awesome. It is funny and dumb and cheesy and the combat feels fantastic. It does not overstay its welcome, although it is frequently difficult to tell where you need to go or what you need to do. Beyond the awkward level design, the gameplay is fast and fun. Easy to recommend even nearly 15 years after the fact. Cool game and I look forward to playing DMC4 and DmC.

65 + 66) Mega Man X4 - I usually play through this game with X, but instead I went with the more challenging 100% Zero run. This game is absolutely phenomenal and gets to the heart of what makes the X series as amazing as it is. Great level design, cool Mavericks, great upgrade and sense of progression, and phenomenal soundtrack and graphics. It is a true classic and as good as X1 and X2 in my opinion. EDIT: Now I have done a 100% X run through and I stand by my assessment. Amazing game!!!
1.jpg

67) The Evil Within - I had dreaded finally playing this game since starting a save file in 2014 and then not touching it for years. Restarted the game and made steady progress starting two weeks ago until finishing in late August. The game is just so scary and tense for me throughout (with chapters 2 and 3 surprisingly being the most nerve-racking). It is filled with baffling design decisions alongside some fantastic horror gameplay and ends up feeling like a wonderful mess. Don't think I'd like to play through it again anytime soon, if ever, but it did a good job overall and set up a phenomenal sequel.
s2-d4f4ab2f3d9ceba4fadbbc096274e7bd.jpg

68) Mega Man X5 - Another game with very strange design decisions like the timer and RNG deciding the ending along with the bizarre level system for bosses. Don't know exactly why they did that but I think it adds some replayability and diversity to the game where maybe X4 was lacking in that. With X I got all of the armors (gaea, falcon, fourth, and ultimate) and all hearts, subtanks, and 8 bonus pieces. I need to play through again sometime soon and putting more time into using Zero rather than X, but it's a pretty great game overall and would have been a fantastic conclusion to the X series if only it ended when it did.

69) Mega Man X6 - Playing through this on Rookie Hunter Mode is so much less egregious than I expected. There are absolutely some terribly designed levels in here, but when the difficulty and punishment is mitigated it drastically improves them game from say a 4/10 to maybe a 6/10 with some 7 tendencies. The core gameplay feels good, but it is absolutely marred by ugly and bad levels. Some nice backstory for Mavericks, which I appreciate, but I don't care for the Nightmare system nor the Reploid saving mechanic.
mega-man-x6-470x310@2x.jpg

70) Mega Man X7 - So much worse than I remember it being. I had a more critical eye this time than the last time I played it and found little to no enjoyment. It is a disaster of epic proportions and I would absolutely consider it the nadir of the franchise. No question.
maxresdefault.jpg

71) Mega Man X8 - Pretty disappointing that this is yes, certainly better than the two prior games but doesn't really hold a candle to the first 5 Mega Man X games to me. Lots of good things about it, but the gimmick stages and rare metals (and R&D lab in general) mark a low point in the series. I still desperately want an X9, but not like the final three games in the X franchise. Thanks, Capcom.
mega-man-x8-163103.jpg

72) Octopath Traveler - This game does so much right! I love the aesthetic, the open approach to how you complete the main stories, and the flexibility that the jobs feature allows. The music is some of the best I've heard in a game in ages and the combat remains satisfying all the way through my 60 hour playthrough. At the same time, the lack of interaction with characters and the grinding that's required near the end game is problematic and could have been circumvented. It's a flawed game but will still likely remain one of my favorite experiences of the year and I'm really happy it was such a huge commercial success.
Octopath_Traveler_character_guide.0.jpg

73) Spider-Man - This is easily among my top games of the year and I would argue the best game that Insomniac have made so far. The traversal is a blast, the story is wonderful, and the characters are well developed and believable. Loved the main quests, but could do without a lot of the collectibles.

3393264-spider-man-ps4.jpg

74) Xenoblade Chronicles 2 : Torna ~ The Golden Country - This is among the best DLCs I have ever played. All in all I clocked in around 15 hours to complete it and, aside from problems that plagued the main game as well (field skills, crafting is a chore) I had a wonderful time. The community aspect absolutely could have used a tweak, but it wasn't as egregious as I was lead to believe. The story was fun and well contained, the graphics and performance (minus the final half hour or so) was fantastic, and I loved the faster gameplay with switching between drivers and blades. Torna is a fantastic expansion on one of my favorite RPGs of the last couple years and it's a must for fans of the base game.
xenoblade-chronicles-2-torna-collectibles-1024x576.jpg

75) The Messenger - This is certainly among the better 2D action platformers I've played this generation and probably in my top 15 games for the year. It starts strong enough as a Ninja Gaiden clone and then things really take a turn when it switches to time travel from 8-bit to 16-bit. Unfortunately the backtracking element that makes it a Metroidvania makes the middle of the game sag quite a bit, but I still ended up with 100% completion after about 16 hours. The final level and boss in the game were definitely the highlight for me, so it ended on a high note. This game has its problems but overall I found it to be worth pushing through to the end.

October:

76) Hyper Light Drifter: Special Edition - Such an outstanding game. I had a rocky start trying to find my way in the east, but after that it was all smooth sailing. It offered the right amount of challenge: stiff, but never unfair. The boss fights were great and so too were the environments. Smooth performance, gorgeous soundtrack, and a lovely aesthetic. HLD should absolutely be experienced by anybody who can handle the old-school difficulty. Very highly recommended!
feat-hyper-light-drifter.jpg

77+79) Mega Man 11 - The 19th and probably final Mega Man game that I will play through this year, Mega Man 11 is the first Classic Mega Man game we've gotten this decade and god does it feel good to have him back. 11 is a major step forward for the series with a fairly simple layout of 8 Robot Masters and 4 quick and dirty Wily stages, but the double gear system and some cool new parts to make it very replayable on various difficulties. I think I'll return to 11 frequently over the years and try to master it (to some extent). Very happy with how this turned out and it will surely rank within my top 10 for the year.
MegaMan11_Art_png_jpgcopy.jpg

78) Into The Breach - Brilliant game. Not my usual fare, but I appreciate everything that Into The Breach is doing. It can feel so punishing at times, but also so satisfying to finish a map and to complete optional objectives. The game gives you plenty of time to assess the situation you're in but sometimes you don't know you've lost until several turns have passed. Into the Breach is full of content and replayability and I am excited to dip back into it from time to time and always have a new experience.
into-the-breach.png

80) StarLink: Battle For Atlas - No, I did not need to spend $90 on this game but here we are. Pretty much only used the Arwing and Fox McCloud, but I suppose it's nice that the options to use all the other pilots and ships and so forth existed. This is a great game to pick up and play so I am fairly confident I will return to it from time to time to get 100% completion, but I am satisfied for now with the week and a half I spent with it. StarLink is a fun and competent game that looks great on Switch and for once made me excited that Star Fox may have a future. Enjoyed this game a good deal but there are few I would recommend it to. Strong 7 out of 10.
H2x1_NSwitch_StarlinkBattleForAtlas_image1600w.jpg

November:

81) Yoku's Island Express - Unique game with a pure heart. Yoku is an adorable dung beetle who is the new post master of his island. The game itself operates like a Metroidvania with a pinball mechanic that, while finnicky at times, is mostly a huge success and utter delight. This is certainly among the most fascinating takes on the saturated Metroidvania genre and one that I think is accessible to all and easy to love. Great game that I can easily recommend to just about anyone.
yokus-island-express-featured-1260x709.jpg

82) Dark Souls Remastered - Original Dark Souls is a stone cold classic and it's great to have this amazing adventure on the go. I did just about all the optional content and loved areas that I skipped out on originally (like say the Painted World of Ariamas). Can't recommend this game highly enough to people who haven't tried it yet. It's magical.
image

83) Assassin's Creed: Odyssey - Origins last year was the first AC game that I really liked a lot and this is the first AC game that I absolutely love. Kassandra simply has to be the best protagonist ever. The combat (no matter which way you approach it) feels far more satisfying than it used to. I find myself constantly shocked by the sheer size and scale of ancient Greece even after about 50 hours of play. Ubisoft has completely outdone themselves this time as I think it is the best open world game of the generation and easily the finest game Ubisoft has ever released. Super impressed--it will occupy a very high spot in my GOTY list for 2018.

assassins-creed.jpg

84) Devil May Cry 4 - The game looks really nice and plays well. Story is mostly nonsense, but the characters are cool and charming. The big problem is that there is some really goddamn boring level design and it's extremely repetitive (run down corridor, you're locked in to kill the monsters, door unlocks) and the second half is literally the first half backwards with the more popular Dante. Maybe I'll like DmC...
933234.jpg

December:

85) DmC - This is not all that much like the rest of the Devil May Cry games but I think it's easily among the best (right behind DMC3). Really great presentation, good level design for the most part, excellent controls, and fantastic boss battles. The game is so tryhard edgy, but at the same time there is some cheesy humor that really works and I enjoyed immensely. I doubt this will be something that I go back to, but I had plenty of frenetic fun in the 10 hours that it took to get through it. Definitely a good game and far better than what it gets credited for.

dmc-wallpaper-edition.jpg

86) Pokemon: Let's Go, Pikachu! - Haven't collected all 150 (153?) yet but I have become the Pokemon Master of the Kanto region. This is a simple but effective game and one that I liked many aspects of. I dip in and out of the Pokemon games and I'm glad I came back for this one. It's a charming and totally inessential game that definitely relied on nostalgia to be most impactful. Really nice, simple graphics, great music, easy to play and to get through, and I love the changes to have Pokemon in the overworld rather than as random encounters. I hope they keep that moving forward and take many innovations from this game into Gen 8.

H2x1_NSwitch_PokemonLetsGoPikachu_enGB_image1600w.jpg

87) Florence - What a special and intimate experience this game is. Beautiful music, touching story, and the gameplay communicates ineffable feelings remarkably well. It's a 45 minute story that will stay with me for some time. Highly recommended and easy to relate to.
hairposter_noframe_horizontal.0.jpg

88) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Cleared Classic Mode with Donkey Kong and Fox, so I guess I'm pretty much done with this game. Of course, I'll go through World of Light and unlock all fighters and play online a bunch but I'm counting this as "beating" the game. I think everybody can agree this is the best Smash game yet and it's not even close. How could it be? Easy GOTY contender in a year of great games. What a way to close out 2018.
Switch_SuperSmashBrosUltimate_illustration_01-1.jpg

89) Tetris Effect - The game gets pretty damn tough in the end but it's an essential VR game and one of the most immersive and engaging experiences I've ever had in a game. You really experience that flow state and get sucked into it! So much more than "just" Tetris and easily among the best new experiences a person can have in games this year. Super highly recommended.
dims

90) Dead Cells - Deserving of all the accolades it's received, Dead Cells is an action packed masterpiece and has constantly beckoned me back with just a bit more progress and success each time I play. I can get to the final boss very consistently now but he is an unbelievable beast to top. Recommended to fans of action games who can learn to love the roguelike.

91) Moss - A terribly charming little game thanks to excellent implementation of VR and an adorable protagonist - Quill. Moss is a fairly light and breezy game that didn't get me stuck on more than one or two occasions, but it did get me a little sick from time to time. It is a beautiful game that is easy to fall into and at about 5 hours it does not waste too much time. An easy game to recommend for somebody open to a cute and relatively straightforward platformer that at times feels heavily inspired by Team ICO.
moss-screen-01-ps4-us-10nov17

92) Ninja Gaiden - Played through this on a whim since it was recently added to the Nintendo Switch Online app. It's been so long since I've seen a game repeatedly refuse to end with so many horrific and unfair final bosses. No idea how anybody ever got through this without savepoints. Still, it's a pretty wicked game with really great graphics, sound, and controls for the most part. I don't think I ever want to play through it again, but it was really cool seeing one of the original classics all the way through.
SI_3DSVC_NinjaGaiden_image1600w.jpg

93) GRIS - Without a doubt the most beautiful game I have played this year and it is so timeless in its aesthetic that I contemplate whether it can be truly outdone ever. The use of color and music accompanying this generally straightforward and stress free journey is astonishing and I probably did more screencaps and video shares than I have with games 10 times this size. In about 3 hours of play overall it is certainly a brief experience and really does not overstay its welcome. Easily a GOTY contender and a game I can recommend without hesitation to just about anyone.
H2x1_NSwitchDS_Gris_image1600w.jpg

94) Crow: The Legend - This turned out to be more a VR movie than a VR game but it was still pretty cool. 20 minutes long and good for kids. I chuckled a couple times, too. Nice performances from John Legend, Oprah, and Constance Wu.

crow3.png

95) Donut County - This was one of my best possible panaceas for a long travel day. The game is fun, funny, and doesn't overstay its welcome. I loved DC and would highly recommend it to just about anyone. Kids love it , too!
donut_county_yard_1920.0.jpg

96) Minecraft - Never played this game before but I had a nice time doing co-op with my nephew in creative mode. Obviously it's not possible to beat the game, but I had a decent time with it. Got respect for Minecraft now even though I'd never play it on my own.
apps.608.13510798887677013.5c7792f0-b887-4250-8c4e-4617af9c4509.bcd1385a-ad15-450c-9ddd-3ee80c37121a

97) Guacamelee! 2 - Awesome Metroidvania in a year that was chock full of them. I liked this more than the original and found it to be minimally frustrating, offering a solid challenge and charming humor. Glad I waited for the Switch version as it was perfect for short bursts of play over about an 8 hour full game. Highly recommended.
guacamelee2-blogroll-02-1534810406473_1280w.jpg

98) Astro Bot: Rescue Mission - This is the game that made me a believer in VR. It is a constant joy from start to finish and it never ran out of ideas. This is quite easily the best 3D platformer of the year and among the best ever made. I'm so happy that game is seeing major success and I hope we continue to see great support for VR in the future because this is incredible.
astro-bot-rescue-1.jpg

99) Black Mirror: Bandersnatch - Bad movie and even worse for its interactive portions. I fear that Black Mirror has run out of great ideas and great execution. Wouldn't recommend except as a passing curiousity.
maxresdefault-2.jpg

100) SUPERHOT VR - This was the coolest way for me to cap off 2018. SUPERHOT VR is a must for fans of VR and I could see somebody who wasn't sold on the concept have this as their tipping point. It's a brief experience just for the "story" but one that continuously pushed and challenged me. Very satisfying to play through in a couple of 45-60 minute sessions. Someday I'll have to try the non-VR version but for now this was my 2018!

I feel like I'm back on my groove, now! Time for another update.

#33 BlazBlue: Central Fiction – Completed 7/13/18
#34 Limbo – Completed 7/17/18
#35 Umineko: Questions Arc – Completed 7/24/18
#36 Azure Striker Gunvolt – Completed 7/25/18

BlazBlue: Central Fiction - I still miss the way the story was separated by each character back in CT/CS, but at least the story is a step up from CP this time around. Actual gameplay is fantastic, I love the changes to overdrive and active flow. I'll continue to play this for a while.

Limbo - I wrote a review for this, so check it out.

Umineko: Questions Arc - The game isn't over, but since Chapters 1-4 and 5-8 are separate releases, and it took me something like 50-60 hours to get this far... I'm counting it. Too many thoughts to list here, and the story isn't over yet. I'll probably make a LTTP once I'm done.

Azure Striker Gunvolt - Got the Striker Pack on Switch a few days ago, and in-between Umineko chapters I decided to take a quick break to play something else. Haven't played too many MegaMan titles, but this was a pleasant surprise. Definitely checking out the sequel next.

#41 Devil May Cry HD 8 PS3 - July 26th - 11 hours
My goal with this game was to at least beat it on hard as I'm a bit of a DMC noob and have only played them on normal before. I managed it and it's not too bad outside of the last 2 or 3 bosses which killed any hope of a DMD run, I just don't think I'd be able to beat nightmare 3 on that mode. Either way I'm happy I went back, I love the atmosphere and the amount of choice you have with how to tackle each fight

Completelly forgot to include this bad boy.

20. Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn

Can't say it was great, can't say it was terrible. Humor was alright, combat is kinda boring. Okay-ish.

I don't think I'll finish another one by the end of July, so here goes: 7 games this month!
19 games left. 5 more months. Still around 4 a month.

Main post.

July 2018:
l8JjC39.jpg

26.5 DmC: Vergil's Downfall (XBO)- 3 hours. ★★★★ I enjoyed this just as much, or a bit more than the original. Vergil's powers take a while to get used to but once you do, you can pull out spectacular, deliberate combos.

yfnymlc.jpg

27. State of Decay 2 (XBO) - 20 hours. ★★★☆ This game is very fun in coop, albeit easier too. They improved a lot from the original, the quest line is a huge step backward though. There was a clearer objective in the original SoD's story. On the other hand, building your settlement and killing zombies have never been more fun.

JI9Q2vK.jpg

28. Guacamelee: Super turbo championship Edition (XBO) - 6 hours. ★★★☆ I don't enjoy platformers very much, so I have no idea why I keep playing them. There was this jumping challenge in Prince of Persia 2013 where you had to freeze and unfreeze water to make it across to the other side. This game was that challenge x 10. It can be very unforgiving, but not impossible. Some arenas in the last level were frustrating. I sort of enjoyed it, I also would recommend it.

3WhiZDg.jpg

29. Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2 (PC) - 11 hours. ★★★☆ This game has never been on my radar and it turned out to be a delightful surprise. Some recipes/restaurant menu were enjoyable to play, the rest, not so much. A good casual game to pass the time.

jPeXjJu.jpg

30. Abzu (XBO) - 3 hours. ★★☆☆ It is very easy to pick up the similarities between Abzu and Journey/Flower, but Abzu is nowhere as good. It is beautiful, but bland and boring. Traversal is not as fun or smooth as Journey or Flower, the relationship with the shark was unclear hence the twist/climax was ultimately pointless.

MaHsdjV.jpg

31. Layers of Fear (XBO) - 4 hours. ★★☆☆ Even though most protagonists in horror movies have plot-armors, those movies can still end up to be thrilling and exciting. It is because most of them are relatable everyday person being placed into extraordinary circumstances where they can be damaged not just physically but mentally. It is really hard to make this concept of an "invincible protagonist" work in a video game where the protagonist has nothing to say, no personality aside from various random/poorly-voiced flashbacks that only show off how sadistic he was.
Layers of Fear is a beautiful art game, with an incredible gimmick where your surrounding shifts as you turn the camera and it is all it is. This game is barely scary, and never managed to create the feeling of dread in its full length of 3-4 hours, that PT, the game that inspired it, did in under an hour.

yYOLj2C.jpg

32. A Way Out (PS4) - 7 hours. ★★☆☆ When you play a shooter game in coop, you'd often come across trivial button prompts where both characters would help each other to go through an obstacle. If you make a full-length game based on these prompts, you would get an easy, boring and forgettable experience. It is how I would describe A Way Out.
The simple dialogue, generic writing and forced action events don't help it either. The twist makes it arguably fun, but it happens way too late into the game.

YXgmMI9.jpg

33. Banjo Kazooie (XBO) - 15 hours. ★★★★ I really, really enjoyed this game. Its graphic might be dated, but almost everything else isn't. Its gameplay is still fun. The world is just big and intricate enough to encourage exploration without making it all too daunting. It has variation in gameplay and pacing.

Long time since I updated this one, still on pace to beat 52 games this year.. but currently putting a lot of time in to Octopath and after that I will play Ys VIII so there's where the majority of my playtime will go for the time being. Beat a lot of easier games with my son who is 5 so the grades are reflected by how fun we had with them. Not very fun :P

I have barely touched my PS4 this year, I have a couple of games which I want to beat this year that I should probably get to soon. Unless I get that Xbox One X first...

Beat the game as Lilac. This is a neat game that mixes classic Sonic the Hedgehog elements with Rocket Knight Adventures, and is a nice tribute to the Genesis/MD games.
I personally liked the game's plot esp. since it has a great villain who is pretty genre savvy. My major gripe with the game still though is how lengthy stages are: Taking around 10-15 minutes to beat a stage is needlessly long! Thankfully it's a short game per character route so it has that going for it at least.

42. Metroid: Samus Returns - 26/06/2018

In praise of how good this game is I won't make any rueful comparisons to Other M.

It's awesome, with the only real problems being its comparative linearity to other Metroids like Super and Prime and its low number of bosses. Otherwise it's classic Metroid through and through, and it's a shame people are so willing to write it off for one reason or another.

Decided to start with the weakest games in the series just so that I'd be left with the good ones and dang is this game really dull and feels very experimental. There's not impact to some of the stuff you do or collect and it is needlessly tough on Normal difficulty.
It really feels like a game that just HAD to be made and they got some interns to do it. To be fair to the interns they got a good grasp of basic development stuff but the actual game lacks flair.

It is my first year.
I am not very confident that i can finish it all, but let`s try !

1 - The Order 1886 (January) - PS4

the-order-1886-capa-playreplay1.jpg

Review: 3/5
Its fun game to play, but have a very slow progression story wise. I think they could improve the game a lot by changing the storytelling method. When the game starts to get good, its over.

2 - Hatchet and Clank (February) - PS4

maxresdefault.jpg

Review: 5/5
This game have a excelent gameplay. I really enjoyed most of the moments while playing it. Tried the new game plus, but i think the first playthrough was enought of hatch and clank, for now.

3 - Dark Siders II (March) - PS4

SlPDVNd.png

Review: 3/5
Darksiders II is a fun game, but it gets old really quickly. At the end-game, i was hoping that i had no more "temples" to finish.

4- Shadow of the Colossus (April) - PS4

shadow-of-the-colossus-screen-02-ps4-us-30oct17

Review: 5/5
A beautifully crafted world. It is a game that i wanted to play since the PS2 era, but never managed to get a hands in it. It is really incredible, in the gameplay and visuals. Storywise it is not really impressive, but maybe it is the storytelling style that don't appeal to much for me.

5 - Resident Evil 7 (July) - 23 hours - PC

maxresdefault.jpg

Review: 5/5
A really good game. It is good to have a horror game that does not put all the tension in scary jumps. It has a good amount of thriller, action and history.

6 - Alien: Isolation (July) - 27 hours - PC

This is a good game, but it really should be short. The trial and error approach is mandatory for some parts, and in the latter chapters its starts to get really tiring. Maybe it was an error to play this game on the hard difficult. The save system is understandably, but i think it should be designed in a different way. I dont like games that punish players by introducing a fixed location save system.

Got everything that is possible in this one. This is the best puzzle games that i played recently. Some of the anti cube puzzles requires a little bit too much effor for the user, like writing alphabets in a spare paper. However, the other ones are great and relaxing.

It is a good game, however not my taste. It started as a game, but later seens like a job. The procedural levels are nice but it loses the originality and creativity when compared to a well thinked level design. The difficult was based on the number of enemies in the same place.

I remember playing this game as a kid back in 1998. Never beated it before. It is really challenging and requires a lot of strategy to complete a single level. I was really satisfied to complete this game. It felt like a great achievement.

It was a pleasure to play this game. The platform and level design is incredible, the nostalgia is really high. I was impressed by how much this game evolves from the first and second game in the trilogy.

Wow this was tough even on Normal. I enjoyed it for the most part although a few stages felt too long namely Yeti and Burn Rooster's stages. Bosses have way too many invincibility frames but that makes them come off like a Souls series boss battle XD.

79. DuckTales (NES)
80. DuckTales 2 (NES)

After playing Ducktales remastered I wanted to go back and replay the older games again. DuckTales 1 is way more simplistic than the Remastered and I prefer the Remastered ver. more due to better boss fights and giving you a reason to further explore a level. The original game is still good though for what it is.
2 is a solid Platformer as well, and while I prefer the music in the first game, the 2nd game has decent tracks overall. Each level has a hidden map piece that you can find in order to get the good ending which is why I replayed it. While it wasn't as impressive as I'd hoped it would be, it let me get a better handle of the game's design. If there's onething I would alter in a remake it is to make secret areas easier to spot as I was confused about finding a certain Map piece in the first stage until I looked up a guide.

Replayed this as part of the RPG club. The final stretch took me a while due to to getting lost in the final area, Castle Strangerock.
The game is a neat Legend of Zelda-like Action RPG, and while it has various archaic concepts, it doesn't hold the game back much and is overall a solid game in its own right.

06 | Final Fantasy XV | PC
Time: 40 hours
Score: 6/10

I rarely play JRPG's but having built a new rig I was eager to play Final Fantasy XV. The game looks absolutely stunning and manages to evoke an atmosphere reminiscent of a roadtrip adventure. This is the game's biggest strength along with the personality that Square Enix has bestowed upon the four main characters. While the writing ranges from mediocre to poor across the entire adventure, the game more than makes up for it with charm and personality.

Then why is this only getting a 6? Well there are multiple reasons: the side-quests are absolutely atrocious and range from bad to terrible. The four guys aside there are nearly no fleshed out NPC's, you'll rarely be doing anything meaningful and the game is too easy to make the progression and leveling system meaningful. Besides that the combat isn't anything to write home about. And worst of all the storyline is a gigantic mess. It's very clear that this game changed in direction a lot over its development duration. There are interesting concepts and features but rarely are they fleshed out well. Take the boss fight in Altissia for example: gorgeous set piece and animations all ruined by non-existent gameplay mechanics. You'll be in that wonderfully beautiful city for maximum an hour and then the story advances again. What the hell?

Final Fantasy XV is clearly a very flawed game but despite that I couldn't help but enjoy some of its aspects. No idea if I'll return for post-game content though.

54. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes / 7h10 completed 23.07.18

metal-gear-solid-ground-zeroes-screenshot-5.jpg

I didn't really like this iteration of what was one of my favorite series in the past. I've always loved MGS for the characters and the silly stories, but this somewhat more grounded take just does nothing for me. It's still silly at points but it doesn't feel the same. The visual style and the lack of any kind of personality on Snake's part probably has a lot to do with it. I miss Hayter's camp.

The game feel is pretty good, but what you're actually doing just feels like a more boring version of MGS past. Or maybe i'm just over with this kind of gameplay, not sure. It took me 7h to finish the main campaign and one side mission, i couldn't be bothered to go for more. Looking back on that time, 90% of it was literally waiting and looking through binoculars and getting caught and starting over from checkpoints and doing the same stuff again. I'm not one to demand changes instead of adapting to game design, but this particular game would benefit greatly from being able to save anywhere. For me, at least.

Having played about 3-4 hours of Phantom Pain by now and not really having much fun with it so far, i think these MGS V games are just not for me. Which is fine.

An alright entry in the series. The story takes a while to go anywhere but the last few chapters were the strongest. I actually did like the present day stuff more than in past entries. Ubisoft is clearly having fun with itself here. The main missions are among some of the weakest gameplay bits in here though. Too constricting and too many tailing missions. I literally lost it and threw my controller at one in particular. You probably know which if you played it.

tailing that fucking italian chap.

The world itself is a joy to explore, and that's what matters most to me in an AC game. Sailing feels great and my best time was had at sea, either just exploring or taking down those forts. On foot gameplay gets infuriating at times though. AC always had a bit of a problem with animation priorities and navigation, but i've never felt it as much as in this game. A good chunk of my patience was drained by Edward having problems going in a straight line and not holding on to every piece of scenery he passes by. The combat is just terrible in its implementation as well. I like the options in theory, but ended up just upgrading my holsters and shooting every non basic enemy i couldn't stealth. And the AI is laughable as well. It's a world of blind people out in the Caribbean. Also a shoutout to the portuguese actually speaking portuguese, but that voice acting was baaaad.

All in all, despite the many flaws, i enjoyed it. Right behind the Ezio trilogy for me. Haven't played any of the more recent ones yet though.

First time posting here, but I've been keeping track of my games completed since the beginning of the year. Not sure if I'll make it to 52 still, but we'll see. Hope I'm posting everything right. My ratings will be on a 5 star scale, but I will do halves. Here it goes:

January:

header.jpg

Game 1: Wolfenstein: The New Order (Playstation 4) - January 2, 2018
Score ★★ 1/2

After the initial buzz this game got out when it first released, I was expecting more. It was a better story campaign than people were expecting at the time I suppose. The story was the better part of the experience for sure, but actually playing this game was not that fun. The shooter just always felt repetitive and frustrating, which is weird for something so crazy and frantic. I was hoping things might be better for the sequel, which is why I played this game first.

header.jpg

Game 2: Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (Playstation 4) - January 15, 2018
Score

Much better story campaign, but still suffered from the less than stellar game play of the first one. This one scores higher though because the campaign really does go batshit crazy, and I appreciated that about this. As much of a slog playing these games were, I do hope we get a third and final one with BJ Blazkowicz.

220px-Yakuza3_boxart.jpg

Game 3: Yakuza 3 (Playstation 3) - Finished January 25, 2018
Score

With the upcoming release of Yakuza 6 at the time, I wanted to catch up with the rest of the series. I had already played Yakuza 0 and Kiwami, but only missed out on Yakuza 2. Going back to Yakuza 3 was probably the hardest because of it's more dated aspects compared to modern entries. With that being said, I still had fun with this one. I liked some of the new characters that showed up in this one too. It has a slow start, and it's not my favorite in the series, but I think this is an entry that's still worth playing.

February

Game 4: Shadow of the Colossus (Playstation 4) - February 9, 2018
Score ★ 1/2

This was my first time playing the game to completion. I had played the early parts on PS2 and PS3 before, but never finished it. It is still a pretty great game, and holds up really well. Not a perfect score, because there were some colossi that have some patterns that were frustrating to get through, but that's the only gripe I had with it really. That ending still has me going "wtf" a little, lol.

Yakuza4_FeaturedImage

Game 5: Yakuza 4 (Playstation 3) - February 19, 2018
Score

Yakuza 4 introduced multiple protagonist to the series, and while it made for some cool variety in the story, and combat, it also brought some problems to the series. I actually liked the new playable characters they introduced, but it's just where the story goes that felt it dragged in parts. The overall story was probably the least satisfying I had played up to this point. The new protagonists were fine, but the antagonists in this entry were probably the weakest in the series I had seen yet. It made the ending just kind of a chore rather than something I enjoyed. This game did introduce one of my new favorite characters in the series in Akiyama. He just is an all around likeable guy, and I like his part in future games.

capsule_467x181.jpg

Game 6: Bayonetta (Switch) - February 22, 2018
Score 1/2

My score for this game is less to do with the quality of the game, and more to do with my skill in this type of game. I found that I was not very good at the action combat in this, and it kinda killed some of my fun with it. I thought I would enjoy this game more, because this was actually technically a replay. I had played it when it came out on 360, and I remember thinking I enjoyed it at the time, but couldn't remember much else. I played it this time in preparation for Bayonetta 2, which I still haven't played. My view on this replay was that, I found it frustrating and hard to do combos. I still am glad this series exists though, I like it but don't like playing it.

March

header.jpg

Game 7: Ittle Dew (Wii U) - March 11, 2018
Score 1/2

This game was fine, but it was also just a bit underwhelming. The puzzles were never super challenging, and the game is very short. I wanted to like it more than I did, because it has a charming look to it, but not much character beyond that. The final boss also just pissed me off for a while.

s-l300.jpg

Game 8: Yakuza 5 (Playstation 3) - March 31, 2018
Score

Probably my least favorite of the Yakuza games. I was actually a bit sad with how much this game annoyed me. The story was long, and convoluted. This is probably the worst the series got. You have 5 playable characters in it this time, and that was serious 1 too many. There's one character called Shinada who I almost completely wish was removed from the game. A loan shark that's with him is actually more interesting than he is. My favorite part of this game was you get to play as Haruka, Kiryu's adopted daughter, for a few chapters. It's refreshing, because she plays completely different, because you're working on her idol career. The dancing and singing mini games are fun, and she has some of the best side missions. I was starting to wish we had a whole game like that, because once I got back to punching guys, which started to feel so boring in comparison. I think combat was very diminished in this game compared to the rest of the series because you had 4 other combat focused characters, and you could never get attached to any of them. This game made me really want to see Haruka succeed as an idol more than anything, and I didn't care about the villain's plot.

April

220px-Yakuza_6_cover_art.jpg

Game 9: Yakuza 6: The Song of Life (Playstation 4) - April 4, 2018
Score 1/2

I am so conflicted on this game. I think I enjoy the gameplay of Yakuza 0 more, but this was still real fun to play at times. Some great side missions, and very well established new characters, even if I didn't like all of them, they're portrayed well. Then there's the fact that I just think I hate the story. It's well told, and well crafted, but I just hated the direction it goes in some places. I can't go into some details because I don't want to spoil it, but this game made me angry with what it does at times. On one hand, you can praise the creators for making such well realised world and characters that I got so heavily invested, but on the other hand, I still don't like feeling so angry about what they did. I'm more looking forward to playing Kiwami 2, because maybe I'll get a Yakuza story I like with this awesome engine of theirs. I managed to play this prior to release because of their demo mistake, but I did still buy it on release.

220px-Donkey_Kong_94_box_art.jpg

Game 10: Donkey Kong (Gameboy via 3DS Virtual Console) - April 30, 2018
Score

So April was a bit of a slow month for me, but before bed I was playing this for a couple weeks and finally finished it at the end of the month. I wish Nintendo would do another game like this, because it was cool and fun to play through a more fleshed out version of the arcade style of Donkey Kong.

May

dragon-quest-vii-ac76f.png

Game 11: Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past (3DS) - May 12, 2018
Score 1/2

I had really wanted to like this more than I did. I had played Dragon Quest 5 for the first time last year, and had a lot of fun playing that. I had been working on this entry since then, and finally worked on trying to beat it this past May. To put it simply, this game is way too long. It's weird, but for a game that so much happens in, it feels like nothing happens. I wanted to love it, because I like the art style, I like the music, and the remake is gorgeous. It's just a very subpar story, and their devotion to keep things retro felt like something that dragged this game down. DQ5 felt like it had much more weight to the story, and a more satisfying conclusion. Certain character models are considered so iconic within the DQ series, that their insistence on staying with that tradition brought the experience down for me. Like reusing the same character model a dozen times, because that's what iconic to DQ didn't feel endearing to me, it felt generic. For example, this is the old lady character model...so that's going to be the only old lady you see for the entire game, in every town! It didn't bother me in DQ5 because it was 2D perhaps, but it didn't seem to hold up to me in a detailed 3D game.

Game 12: Final Fantasy III (PC) - May 18, 2018
Score ★★

Despite my issues with Dragon Quest VII, I was still in a big RPG mood after beating it, so I went right into Final Fantasy III on my PC. I wanted to play a more old school style Final Fantasy game, and I honestly didn't know what to expect with III. I knew it had a job system, but I knew little else. As far as narrative, it's nothing mind blowing, but I still enjoyed it. It was the kind of simple I was able to get behind, and the combat was some of the best that old school FF could offer I think. The job system is great, when it works. The only downside is that parts of the game require you to be specific jobs, and I didn't like it when it did that. Other than that though, I had a lot of fun with my time with it.

header.jpg

Game 13: Dragon Age Origins (Playstation 3) - May 26, 2018
Score ★★ 1/2

Still in an RPG type mood, but looking for a little more depth, I jumped right into Dragon Age Origins. It was fun to finally play through this game. Combat on the console version of this was a bit frustrating to control at times, but I was still able to enjoy the narrative on console well enough. It did start to drag in the middle of the game, and I started to find myself get really bored with the combat. I wanted to just do more dialogue trees, rather than play the game sometimes, which I guess is Bioware games in a nutshell.

detroitbecomehuman1.jpg

Game 14: Detroit: Become Human (Playstation 4) - May 28, 2018
Score ★★

Another game I wish I liked more than I did. This game had high potential to score higher for me, but it just ends too abruptly, which really hurt the experience. I also think the chapter structure can make the game feel too disjointed and not connected. Kara was the character that made every one fall in love with this universe when they did their engine prototype, and she has the weakest part in the whole story, which was a let down for me. My favorite part, like many people was the interaction between Lt Anderson and Conner.

June

header.jpg

Game 15: Stardew Valley (Switch) - June 7, 2018 (got up to 3rd year in game)
Score ★★ 1/2

This game hit me hard, and got me addicted for over a week. I was playing it from the moment I woke up, to when I went to bed for several days. I was hooked on the loop of building my farm, and doing stuff in the mines, etc. Then once I got to the third year in the game, I crashed and burned hard. The loop lost all its appeal to me. It's very well made, and well crafted, but I after playing it for as long as I did, I came to the conclusion that I wish they did away with the damn time of day stuff, or at the very least give you more control over it. Trying to fit stuff in a day was what pushed me over the edge, and made me fall out of love with the game. That's the one thing from Harvest Moon I wish they didn't keep in this.

header.jpg

Game 16: Dark Souls Remastered (Playstation 4) - June 13, 2018
Score 1/2

After years I finally finished Dark Souls. There were moments that I was questioning if I'd ever complete it, because it seemed too hard, and I might give up out of frustration. I persisted though, and I love the game. It's a classic now for a reason, and I even ended up playing it through new game plus.

July

Game 17: Mega Man X (Playstation 4) - July 24, 2018
Score

After decades, I finally finished a Mega Man X game. This has also been one of the best Mega Man games I played so far. Great music, great bosses, and levels. The only problem I had with it, some of the sigma levels were really cheap.

680473d833a0667e4615db7ae7a71af8--super-nintendo-games-old-games.jpg

Game 18: Mega Man X2 (Playstation 4) - July 26, 2018
Score 1/2

Pretty good follow up to Mega Man X, but I didn't like some of the bosses as much. It still had some cool levels though, but some of the trophies in the PS4 version were a bit frustrating to get. Trying to avoid the spotlights was a pain in the ass. I also didn't figure out the time limit of having to find the X-hunters until it was too late, so I ended up starting over. It wasn't really made clear at first.

2586375-box_mmx3.png

Game 19: Mega Man X3 (Playstation 4) - July 28, 2018
Score 1/2

This was my least enjoyable Mega Man X game experience so far. I know it's probably not a bad game compared to something like X7 will be, but the difficulty spiked too high for me. The bosses took off a lot more damage than they did in the previous games. The levels were also too long with the checkpoints feeling like they were really far back. Defeating the final boss was also super frustrating, and I didn't know if I was going to have to put on Rookie Hunter mode or not.

August

mega-man-x4.jpg

Game 20: Mega Man X4 (Playstation 4) - August 2, 2018
Score ★★★ 1/2

At first, I wasn't feeling too hot on this one. It felt slower than the SNES games, but over time I started to get the feel for it more. It was challenging, but didn't exactly feel cheap. I just needed to learn enemy and boss patterns, and I actually got better over the course of playing. I played as X first, then as Zero, and it was a good challenging replaying the game as Zero because he basically had no range at first. Always having to get up close made things tricky, but I liked that, because it made things different than just being a different skin.

That's it for now. Should I just update this post later, or should I make a new post when I come to update?

Typically, people posting here will use one main post to keep a full log, then supplement that with periodic updates in new posts (which may well be extracts from that main post). Ultimately, it's up to you how you prefer to approach it.

Welcome to the challenge! :D

If you only update your post, people won't see it. As said, the typical way to go about it is to have a main post with a complete list that you update, while also writing a new post for each update.
Some people make main posts with the exact same content as the update posts (mini review and everything) while others (like me) have a main post that is more of a "summary" of some kind. Only a list or only the pictures and so on. I like that everyone has their personal style.
Here's my main post and an example of an update post of mine.
