Wow. As someone who has grown up playing video games since a very young age (including DQ on the NES), primarily because I was struggling to comes to terms with my own sexuality and it was a great way to escape reality, this....really hurts. DQ was one of the first games I ever played and really got me into gaming.

I already had a negative opinion of him because of how he denies war crimes, but I had no idea he was anti-LGBT as well. I guess I really shouldn't be surprised....but I still am for reasons I can't explain. What an asshole.

That was...a more nationalistic intro than I was expecting.
It's a very specific program that panders to that audience apparently. Haven't heard of it before this thing blew up, but it sure fits into the sort of message Sugiyama likes to be involved in. Pretty gross stuff. The good news is that it's not a mainstream broadcast thing, so the usual reach is limited unless it goes viral to shame.

I think there's a difference in wanting someone gone because they're actively harming people and wanting someone gone because they're LGBT. Just me, though.
I think it's fine to wish for him to not have a platform anymore, and of course to lose any power he has to harm anyone. I just don't think it's cool to gleefully await anyone's death. I'm not going to derail this with my Quaker silliness anymore though.

I get that he has always been the composer but just fuckin get rid of this guy already

Dragon Quest music is good but I will take worse music just so this guy doesn't have a platform. Dude sucks and is a complete dickhead

User Banned (1 week): Racism. Inflammatory generalization.
If I recall Japanese people are notoriously racist and homophobic. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard this stated numerous times.

I think you all would be horribly surprised by how common this probably is.

Also, the intense hateful kneejerk rejection of a person isn't the way you convince someone or help your agenda. Conversations matter you know?

Ah the internet, where people happily still wish for other´s death even in 2018. This just shows people aren´t growing or getting better.

His views are offensive, but that doesn´t justify wanting him dead.

Any good composer? Like... His music is not that unique and S-E have plenty of talented composers at their disposal.

I wonder, does he have the rights to the most iconic pieces of DQ music? Because that is the only reason I can see for them not sending him to kick rocks and finance more propaganda.

Yup, he does. The compositions that he did for the franchise are owned by him in copyright. Here's the copyright as a example:

Yeah. I feel awful about buying DQ knowing his involvement. Going by the method of donation to good cause everytime I buy DQ to balance out the money I'd be giving him. Still a bad taste in my mouth

I look forward to the same condemnation and boycott of his games on this site as we got during the Kingdom Come release period earlier this year.

Dude is 87 and still actively promoting repugnant ideals. Fuck him, no octaganarian is going to suddenly change their entire world view

Old age do ya thing and let this homophobic bitch die in his sleep

I wouldn't be opposed to people boycotting DQXI but it's kind of a different scenario. His shitty views haven't dictated the world and tone of the game

He has been using his money and influence to spread his far right views for a few decades now. He's not some random nobody ranting at the dinner table to his disinterested family.

So let's not be all high and mighty, the guy is a cancer on Japanese society and he's never going to change.

My first Dragon Quest game was 8 on the PS2.

Sugiyama is literally the reason that I've bought every other DQ since 8 as well as all the past ones used, not new. While this dude lives and money goes into his pocket with every sale of a new DQ game, there is no way that I'm going to contribute to his pocketbook.

This is his daily life considering how involved he is with these groups. Sugiyama is a piece of shit, fuck him and everything he supports.

I... think of all the major video game personalities to be involved with games I cherish his death will be the one I simply don't lament. I do hope he's replaced for the series sooner than later.

Damn, what a shitty person. At least we have one less garbage to sustain and can get orchestrated DQ music out of this when he inevitably dies.

How many other franchises suffer from the same musical fate as DQ? Because it really does seem like he's an ass.
It's really not that unusual to have a special status composer exclusive to a JRPG franchise. Also the history of Dragon Quest, and how established Sugiyama reached out to early days Enix, is probably why he's stuck around so long.

Complaining about him being associated with DQ is like complaining about John Williams being associated with Star Wars, where he's one of the creative leads during development and not "just" the composer.

There is no such thing as: "*insert a whole nationality* is *insert a personality trait or view*". While certain nations might suffer from different inclinations when it comes to horrible views, it's still very reductive to label a whole nation as anything. Japanese, as any other people, are different, with different opinions. The video above has lots of comments from Japanese people and what they actually think.

You didn't really answer my question. I'm honestly scratching my head trying to think of other games that have composers deathgripping their music like this dude to the point of negatively effecting overseas releases and attempting to wring out concert money.

The issue isn't really the special status he has, but rather what you're seeing with DQXI where they can't use the actual orchestral versions of songs and instead have to use midi's because he wants people to attend his concerts and buy the soundtrack. I can't think of another franchise where that occurs.

The problem with Sugiyama and other pieces of bs is that now they have more platforms and their message is more widespread that ever. Look at the Facebook owner been Jewish and allowing Holocaust deniers spread their bs. We really are in the darkest timeline.

who can replace him?

So who'd likely replace him if he left/were fired from the series?
Yasunori Nishiki has more than proven his compositional chops with Octopath Traveler. Outside of Square Enix, Kohei Tanaka has shown the ability to produce grand and majestic orchestral pieces befitting Dragon Quest as well.

There's no shortage of talented composers in Japan. Someone would be able to succeed Sugiyama and match (or exceed) his style relatively quickly.

Congrats to Sugiyama on being one of the worst people in video games well into his 80s. His views are abhorrent and he's been phoning in his music for over a decade. I'm pretty sure literally everyone will be happy to see him go at this point.

This is why I don't support DQ.

Should ban his ass because SE isn't just a Japanese company anymore, it is a global publisher.
His music isn't even iconic in the West, barely anybody cares about the shitty MIDI music over here.

It is time to start fresh and remove his old ass.
SE has 3x decades with DQ, removing him won't do anything but rather improve the PR and future music of DQ.

To get a grasp on some things for those unaware of some things about him. Not only is Sugiyama part of JASRAC which puts him into a powerful position in the game/music industry but also a board member of the Japanese Institute for National Fundamentals, a foreign policy think tank that openly affiliates with Nippon Kaigi, a revisionist nationalist group in Japan.

All of this is normal everyday things for him. this is what he's about. He's an old timer imperialist and nationalist individual who wants to revise history in the country.
